Rinko, Kaori and Koyuki swore they would get married by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics... Now they're about to step into a new chapter of romance... but will they, should they, finally get married?
Not going to lie to you. I pirated this. (What an awful library associate I am. I’m sorry.)
And… I feel conflicted? I like the open-ended conclusion better than the orignal ending to the manga, but I do think it undermines some of Rinko’s final decisions and resolutions. It just feels like we’re back at square one, after nine volumes of watching her grow.
But I did think the exes showing up to the wedding was cute, even if it was incredibly cringe. Cringe-cute? I don’t know. And I do sort of like Key better now, knowing that he didn’t terrorize Rinko into having some sort of toxic causal relationship. I feel like if they ever do reconnect, their relationship would be pretty healthy. Well, as healthy as it could be with such a snot-nosed asshole. And Lord strike me down for being a hypocrite, but I think Key is actually sort of cute with the dark hair. I don’t like blondes. Sue me. I’m terrible.
Also, Mami getting married and her husband being an absolute malewife for her is adorable. Love her so much.
So, I mean, yeah. I’m still not fully satisfied but I feel a little better putting this series to rest knowing that happier endings are on the horizon and that the girls aren’t miserable.
Ves què hi farem, aquesta sèrie és una desil·lusió de principi a fi. És ensopegar amb la mateixa un cop rere un altre i llençar a la brossa uns personatges que prometien molt :( Una veritable llàstima...
so tokyo tarareba is about a trio of 30 something women (33 to be exact) living in tokyo but here's the catch : they're all unmarried and unlucky/unhappy with their love & work lives so almost every night, they gather to drink, complains and talk about "what-if", one night they get told off by a younger man who call them loud, childish and annoying hags and it goes downhill from here.
i both loved and hated reading tokyo tarareba girls, i loved it because it's a funny & lighthearted read while being deeply reflective about life as a woman who grow older and i hated it because of how raw it could get and hit sensitive points, especially about what is happiness? what do i really want in life? in my career? in my relationship?
the main trio is a set of complex characters that i couldn't help but love and empathize with, they're all very aware of the problems in the relationships with men but the reason they don't stop is because they're lonely, unhappy and only just want to feel loved sometimes, it's about convenience rather than happiness.
(however all the men in this manga are despicable losers, especially the main male character.)
so yeah!!! i think it's a very interesting read which is joyful, touching and depressing.
This was a cute little catch-up with the girls a few years down the line. It’s played more for laughs than the main series and has a happier/more fun feel.
There were only 3 chapters of the main comic though, the rest was Tararebar strips, which I think would work fine in a magazine like an agony aunt column people can write into, but I don’t have much interest in reading them as part of a book (they’re not really funny enough to make good comedy in their own right).
All of the exes showing up at the wedding was utterly unbelievable, but seeing as the whole thing was more over the top than the main series, it kind of fitted.
I do think most of TTG comes across as rushed. I really wish the plot and character development could have had more love and care, as I feel like there’s so much potential here for a better series.

Not sure this sequel added much to the series to be honest. I thought the series ended nicely with the Tokyo Tower moment.
It had cute scenes but it stole a bit of the charm of the original ending imo. Especially after Rinko let her other relationship go in favour of Key. And then no real romance actually happened, and she doesn’t even seem torn up about it at all!
What was the point of this? Are we going through this all over again? Pretty disappointed that Rinko didn't meet her happy ending, I really thought that her and Key would have eventually ended up together. This volume made it seem like the original was a waste of time.
yo i was rooting for that wedding venue guy ,,,,,and then he said he was gonna be a PRIEST??? 😭😭😭 i felt my soul die alongside hers looool and no way they sang sugar by maroon 5 💀💀💀 TYE IRONY LMAOO (cuz yknow they’re both cheaters yehehe 🤪)

I actually like this story’s premise more than Tokyo Tarareba Girls. I’m hoping it sticks more towards aiming at your dreams than just getting married. I’m enjoying the various characters in this more too.
Lire cette suite, c'est comme reprendre des nouvelles d'amies perdues de vue. Un tome bourré d'humour dans lequel on prend plaisir à voir nos trois héroïnes gagner (mais pas trop) en maturité.
Akiko Higashimura is one of my favourite mangakas and is responsible for two series that I love: Princess Jellyfish and Tokyo Tarareba Girls (shortened to TTG). So when I happened upon the sequel I jumped to buy it. It genuinely pains me to say this but I found this sequel unsatisfying and a little disappointing. Rinko, Kaori, and Koyuki started the main series as 33 year olds wondering what had happed to their lives, where all the time went, and constantly pondering “what-ifs” (tarareba meaning what if in Japanese). They swore that they’ll be married before the 2020 Olympics and in this sequel it’s finally 2020. First off this manga is very short with only three chapters. It does also have two tarare-bar bonus chapters and a section from the author, both of which are a feature in all the TTG volumes. I love the characters and the main series had so much heart and emotion; although it did veer more on the depressing side, it was a brilliant and thought-provoking read. I reread it (for the third time) to refresh my memory but it made it glaringly obvious that TTG Returns was no where near as good. It feels very rushed with little information about what has happed in the three years between series. The actual events of the book where fun to read and did have funny moments that I have come to expect from Higashimura but it all felt very random and ended as suddenly as it started. I have so many questions! I understand that not every story has to have a nice or clear cut ending, I mean TTG didn’t either, but this was just a bit anticlimactic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
