Candlestick Historical Mysteries cozy gilded age Book 1 May 1893. Mrs. Henry Case finds her amateur sleuthing skills are tested while searching for clues to mysteries both past and present. Unwilling to take everything she hears at face value, Mattie determinedly works to uncover the truth. Challenged with several hurdles along the way, she discovers that it will require all of her intelligence to find the answers she needs. When a woman is found murdered on the first day of his new job, chief of police Garth Hawke fights against disinterest to find the killer. In the process, he begins to wonder if he can trust anyone around him. One thing is obvious. No one in the city of Candlestick appears to trust him. He hopes that will change over time. His plan to win them over is simple. He just needs to do a better job than his predecessor. Given the sensational circumstances under which Henry Case lost his life, it shouldn’t be that difficult.

Yes! I love a good mystery, with wandering stories and unanswered questioning that you may find the answers to in the sequel...or, you may not! Add a little complicated maybe-romance. Stir in a little history. I think I have found what I was looking for!

First time reading this author. Like how the story is laid out with a series of secrets being kept that could heal or ruin the lives of those involved.

Wonderful Read

Although I am trying to put faces on the women of Candlestick I enjoyed the entire story? Being a retiree from law enforcement I understand the Chief of Police's position in just learning the system for this particular department and the lack of cooperation from his own employees . I am so in anticipation of the following stories and hope the Case ladies get involved as well. Everyone has a story to tell and crimes to solve and I want it to be all of these individuals to bring this saga together! Thank you

I like where this series seems to be going

In this first book of a series, and author, new to me, the early development of characters, situations, events and personal histories is rather intriguing. The mystery of a murder is addressed from two separate angles. But the direction of those angles create overlapping circles that eventually collide. The greatest difficulty and impediment to solving the murder are the various forms of prejudice. An amazing introduction to a complicated period of time in the world.

A great start to a new series. As is typical with a first book there are a bunch of characters to meet and get to know, along with grasping a whole new community. That was all well done and yet left lots of interesting tidbits behind to discover in future books. I’m looking forward to delving in deeper to all that’s going on in Candlestick.

Some twists at the end

There was some extra data thrown in at the end that would have made things more obvious as they happened. But this is an introductory book. I like the characters. I am interested in how they will spin the 1929 market crash (I think that is the one coming). No talk of war though. Could be good if they don’t always thrown in data late

Slow

It was perfect for a stressful season, but found myself uninvolved quite often. At the beginning, it's hard to even tell what time period this is. Wish it had said straight away what Mattie was looking for. If I hadn't liked the Goldie Weston books so much, I probably wouldn't have finished this.

Framed in the Past

I chose this rating because this is the first story of the new series...I can tell, this author has many
More chapters to write and many more books to added before the story comes to an end....if there is one?

Wait! What’s that about?

I didn’t like jumping in what felt like the middle of a story. Too many side stories already in progress. Very confusing. The author writes well, but stories need a beginning before the middle & the end!

Yes! I love a good mystery with wandering snippets and old houses and complicated maybe- -romance. Throw in some history and I am hooked! And it has sequels! What more could on want?!
