Swan shifter Maggie Ross adores her life as a professional wrestler at the top of her game. But like every gladiator shifter, whose ancestors once fought, and bonded with, the beasts of the Roman Colusseum, Maggie is bound by magic to abide by the will of the ringmaster family who once ran the arenas, and now run the world's largest professional wrestling corporation.
Lone wolf shifter Conri Lyell has spent his life trying not to order other shifters around in the way his ringmaster heritage allows him to. But all of his efforts to play fair mean nothing as long as his family continues to abuse their power...and when his wolf recognizes a profound connection to Maggie, playing fairly becomes more important than ever.
Because historically, ringmasters don't have fated mates, and Maggie refuses to allow anyone or anything to push her into a relationship where she can literally be controlled by her partner. If Conri and Maggie are to build any kind of future together, they must first dismantle the entire system that keeps them apart in the first place.
Can determination overpower the ancient power of the ringmasters? Find out in GLADIATOR WOLF!
I loved this forbidden, opposites attract, fated mates romantic suspense tale. The story had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, danger, and spice. Maggie is a swan shifter who makes her living as Mad Maggie Magdalene, a performative wrestler in All-Arena Entertaining wrestling. Conri is a wolf shifter who was descended from the Colosseum ringmasters. But Conri refused to participate in his family’s legacy of power and control and left 16 years ago. Conri has returned to spread the news that a database of shifter names is going to be released. But in order to shake up the shifter world and the ringmaster/gladiator dynamic, he’s going to have to break with tradition and his family. Fate throws an interesting curveball in his path when he realizes that Maggie is his fated mate. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters, good world building, and an interesting storyline with danger, excitement, shifter politics, evil machinations, faith, love and hope. While this could be read as a standalone, there is an overarching storyline that weaves the series together so reading the books in order will flesh out that piece of the plot and make the entire story richer. I am looking forward to reading more in this world. 4.5 stars.
Conri is a ringmaster and wolf shifter, part of the powerful family that controls shifters. Conri uncomfortable with the notion that anyone should wield such power walked from his family. Called out by one of the gladiator shifters to change things, he returns to the fold to challenge his brother and bring about real change. His visit is revealing for many reasons not the least of which is finding his fated mate. Conri believes ringmaster's can't have fated mates because of their ability to control other shifters. Maggie is dismayed to find Conri is her mate. She denies the connection but is reluctantly intrigued by his desire to end his family's rule. In an intriguing and fitting twist, Maggie is: a swan shifter, a wildly popular and famous wrestler and taller than Conri. As she helps him prepare for the fight with his brother, she realizes he is not like his family. To his surprise and delight, they discover she is immune to his power. Unfortunately they learn defeating his brother is only the tip of the iceberg. As the secrets surrounding the source of the ringmaster's power are revealed, Conri brings the shifter world to the precipice of a new day. The final book (and Joash's story) should be epic!
Overall, this was a light-hearted, fun PNR and a good addition to the Gladiator Shifters series.
I liked that there were some fairly detailed themes of consent, coercion and the line between the two (not only when it comes to sex, but in the rest of life too), but I did feel like it was laid on with a trowel in places. Then again, given the difficulties that some people seem to have in understanding the concept of consent in the first place, maybe there's genuinely no place for subtlety when discussing it.
I also felt like the constant repetition of "ringmasters don't have fated mates" and "he's totally not my fated mate" started to jar after the first few times (OK, Maggie/Conri, we get it: you don't want a fated mate). But honestly, it was a minor niggle.
Repetition aside, Maggie and Conri both worked for me as lead characters. I liked the respect they held for each other, and how they began to work as a team. And when Joash showed up, he was... well, everything I love about Joash. I really, really hope the author goes ahead and writes his book. Fingers crossed!
Wow! Just wow! I read a lot of different romantasy and across even different age ranges. I’ve read ones where the female has been in whatever kind of military-esque profession or really muscular. This was the best one I’ve ever read! Usually they still have the MFC with someone at least taller if not bigger. That he is shorter and leaner is refreshing. I know that they’re mates, but there is ZERO small man syndrome, negativity, or settling with EITHER MC. From the start it is not only embraced, but celebrated. The whole time I was picturing Lucy Lawless during Xena…with different hair of course, and loving it! So well written!
I'm not sure why this author likes to write under different names.but anyway this is not as good as some of her work as Zoe chant but the main storyline was interesting.I thought it was silly to take the power away from himself when he has another to fight but I guess that means another can continue with the fight in the next book but would be not still be after him? The logic felt wrong there.
This would have totally been 5 stars if not for Conri’s slightly timid behaviour in the beginning. But the dynamics btw Maggie & Conri improved dramatically as the book went on & so it’s getting 4.5
Seriously though I love it. About to read Joash’s story I hope all this hype in the precious books won’t be for nothing
This is the fourth book in Gladiator Shifters and once again Murphy Lawless has written an amazing story. I was hooked start to finish and was completely drawn in the book. The world building is fantastic and the characters so well written and unique. I can’t wait to read book five.
I was having trouble imagining Conri with anyone, but Maggie was the right one! Watching them start to take apart the whole system was awesome. Now I just have to wait for the last book….
This book will grab you and hold you hostage until the last word and beyond! It is absolutely, and undeniably amazing! But ... a year to wait for Joash's story?? REALLY??? 😱
I expected there to be a twist from being fated mates, but I did not expect the familial twist of this book. All I can say is roll on “Gladiator Tiger”.
The Ringmaster power is challenged, and it is the strength of fated mates that carries that challenge. We get to see how family can change as well. It is a sharp story, of people who choose principle of the right to not be commanded as a way of life.
Maggie and Conri met at a wrestling match she participated in. Maggie was a professional gladiator wrestler and Conri was a gladiator ring master. He wished he didn't have that power, while his brother loved having that power. This is an awesome story and I loved it.
This is one wild ride! Looping in the American side of the gladiators to try and confront the ringmaster clan advances the storyline, and still manages to tell the love story of two fated mates. Makes for a great read!
The characters are great. All these heroines are large & in charge. The men all need these women in order to become everything they can be. Its great romance, great sex & great adventure!
I didn't think that I would like this book as well as I did the first 3, but after I got more into it, it turned out almost as good as the first three. Good read and can't wait for the final book in the series. Bring on Book #5.
My favorite of the series so far! Conri's been intriguing since he hit the page, and his story was definitely a pivot point in the series.
Maggie ... is so amazing. I totally picture her as a Xena Warrior Princess with even more height! She's a pro-wrestler & is super wary of Conri's family ... so imagine her reaction when she realizes he's her mate. Then there's the complication of the fact that his family doesn't have mates.
Family drama & battles ensue as Conri fights to remove the Ringmaster's control over the Gladiators.
Then a major family secret is revealed ... which totally blindsides Joash. Setting the next book up perfectly.
