"Haunted" is the story of the author’s real-life paranormal experiences. Julie moves to a new house in a friendlier neighborhood with her husband and daughter after being harassed by her neighbor at her previous residence. However, she immediately starts experiencing paranormal activity in her brand-new house and comes to the realization that the house is haunted. The family is not able to leave the house because of financial reasons. The book shows Julie’s journey of struggling to protect herself and her family and what she had to through because of the paranormal and her traumatic and abusive past.
This book has everything you can expect from a paranormal book, which is actually pretty scary since it is based on real-life events. The protagonist had an extremely thick skin and resilience because of which she tolerated what went on in her house and fought it with everything she had. Her first instinct was to think she was going crazy and blowing things out of proportion, which just shows how even when we’re suffering or are afraid of something, we don’t trust ourselves and are more worried about what others would think. However, more and more instances of the supernatural nature kept on happening and made it impossible for her to ignore them and live her life.
Coons has a very easy-to-read writing style and an effortless flow in her prose. It fits the thriller-esque genre that she writes in. However, there’s this impersonal tone to the writing style that I think prevented me from instantly getting connected to the protagonist. There was a lot of “telling” rather than “showing” in the book. Also, the dialogue could have been more polished.
In the book, there is a lot about spirituality, mediums, empaths, and communication with the spirit world that I personally found interesting to read but I don’t think would be everyone’s cup of tea. I was also surprised that the book had a religious angle but I didn’t mind it.
At some points, the narrator goes off track and talks about things other than the paranormal—the main issue. I found that unnecessary and that it could’ve been edited out to keep the linear flow of the story. The narrator also repeated 2-3 backstory facts in the book which could have been written differently to avoid repetition.
The action was so intense throughout the book that I found myself glued to it and finished it in two sittings. It was definitely a different read for me. I cannot imagine the amount of strength it must have required for the author to go through all this and then to write it down for others to read and take help from.
Haunted: A Paranormal Awakening provides a thrilling—and even terrifying—experience. Pick it up if you want your eyes opened to a very dark aspect of this world that we live in.
Trigger warnings for the book: abuse, rape, suicide, violence, scary situations
If you are faint of heart, do not read Haunted: A Paranormal Awakening at night. There are scares and haunts that will make the bumps in the night seem very threatening indeed.
Julie has been faced with a lifetime of horror. This has included: physical ailments, vile disgusting abuse at the hands of alleged nuns who doubtlessly would be burning in hell for all eternity if they were not fictional, depraved appalling abuse at the hands of an alleged mother who also will be on an express train to hell. Add to that the ability to see spirits and demonic activities and Julie could use a break.
Haunted: A Paranormal Awakening illustrates beautifully that when push comes to shove, you have the power to help yourself. Only when we find the inner strength can we overcome seemingly impossible challenges. Julie, of course, had the trauma of a physically abusive first husband. She adds to that the trauma of a mentally abusive man who needs to be divorced first and ask questions later, as a second husband. That is the true exorcism she needs - to exorcise her alleged husband, Jeff, and her alleged mom out of her life forever.
The frights and scares that come fast and furious will keep the avid paranormal reader glued to Haunted: A Paranormal Awakening. The action is non-stop and keep the reader wondering how Julie can deal with the onslaught. A very well written paranormal book that will engage every fan of ghost and paranormal writing.
I can recommend this to anyone who isn't scared of a scary book but again, do not read this at night!
First, Coons is an author who writes very well, and tells her own stories very well. In this story, Coon writes about her own story in Haunted A Paranormal Awakening. Whether or not you believe in the paranormal (I happen to), reading and living through the ghostly spirits that surrounded Coons, is interesting and eye-opening. First, I believe everything she wrote about her experiences, but that's me, and I tend to believe in things that cannot always be explained. Her haunting changed her outlook and perspective, and made her look at her life, both at the light and dark that surrounded her and her past. This is a frightening and terrifying memoir and I am very glad that Coons had the courage to share her story, not just with me but with anyone who reads this. You don't have to believe, but you may after you read this story. Magnificent story, kept this reader turning the pages. All I knew from the beginning was that Coons survived and became stronger because she wrote about it. I look forward to reading many more work by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.
In the memoir, Haunted: A Paranormal Awakening, Julie Coons shares how her dream house morphed into a life-threatening nightmare. For most, if not all, of us, a home is synonymous with a place of comfort, peace, and joy. When Julie Coons moved to a beautiful house with her husband and daughter, she hoped to feel an overwhelming warmth wash over her. After her difficult childhood with an abusive mother and a gut-wrenching marriage, she deserved a place to call home sweet home. Instead, she received demonic activities comparable to the most daunting horror movies. While the evil spirits were taunting, scratching, bruising, and filling her brain with unimaginable fear, she found the worst part was going through the whole trepidation alone. Her husband, Jeff, mostly refused to acknowledge the paranormal activities, and her daughter, Stephanie, was too young.
First of all, don't read this book alone at night, lol. I made that mistake and had to take a few days break from reading it. It is creepy and scary and I can't believe somebody could go through everything the Author did. (Not just her paranormal experience). She seems like a very strong woman. Julie writes amazingly, and even though some of the stuff that happened was hard to wrap my head around, I enjoyed the book and would recommend
Wow is all I can say Julie. It’s amazing what our human soul can endure. It is always sad to hear about being abused. You really are an amazing woman. And like you said the curse has been broken with you. I would love to hear more about how to connect with deceased loved ones. I have had many pass and always wonder what are they doing and where are they? And why I never dream about them.
