Getting into prison is easy, it’s getting out that’s tricky.

Almost everyone in prison will tell you they’re in there for a crime they didn’t commit, but Anthony Rourke really means it. That’s because he’s actually Bunny McGarry, who has got himself into one of Nevada’s finest penitentiaries under false pretences. He is there to bust someone else out.

The Sisters of the Saint, no ordinary bunch of nuns, find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place when two of their order are taken hostage. The only way to ensure their safe return is to trade them for the mysterious man who is now Bunny’s cellmate. Rumours abound as to who this man really is, but seeing as nobody is allowed to communicate with him in any way, figuring that out will be tricky.

The last thing the situation needs is further complications, but when Sister Dionne comes into contact with an UFO cult, she recognises it as a massive con job. The reason she is so sure is because the whole thing was her idea in the first place—and now she is determined to put an end to it.

The clock is ticking, the prison authorities are suspicious, and lying low has never been a McGarry strong suit. Can Bunny and the Sisters pull off an audacious prison break against near impossible odds?

The third book in the McGarry Stateside series is The Shawshank Redemption meets Ocean’s Eleven.

Bunny is back!!

He makes his arrival on horseback. No, more like on horse...sort of.
The first time I rode on a horse, the experience was, well, (ahem) unique...

We were a tour group of eight and I was the only one who'd never been on a horse before. They decided to give me the calmest horse - King. And, yip, King was also the biggest. The first half of the trip went without incident. But, when the more adventurous riders decided it was time to race, King just flattened his ears and showed us that a retired racehorse still has some speed in his legs.
Turns out I won that particular race, right form the back. I didn't want to, I swear.
As we passed everybody, my life did not flash before my eyes, as you might think. Nope, I just had one thought going through my head:
Fuck, the ground looks hard!
Everybody had a big laugh, especially when they described the visuals to me afterword - I looked like an accordion, because when the horse sent up, my ass went down, and vice versa. Hilarious, especially if you consider the only thing they heard from me was "HHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!"

I know, good times, those fuckers.
Anyway, if you read this book, you will understand why it flashed through my head when Bunny arrived in a small Nevada town.

In this story, Bunny is going to prison. Yip, you read that correctly.
It's part of a plan by The Sisters of the Saint, in a bid to break somebody else out of prison, to trade with a drug cartel who is holding two ladies of the order hostage.
Simple, right?

Well, you have take into account a lot of factors, not least of which is the desert sun on Bunny's Irish skin, the prison system where the guards might be just as bad as the inmates, if not more. And you can't forget the UFO - it is essential.

Lots of action, lots of laughs, McDonnell has this series down to a fine piece of art. Loved it!

For me, this is the best of this short series (so far). I'd say you really need some background on the Bunnyverse to appreciate these novels but it's hard to say if you could read them as a standalone book since I've read them all. Frankly you should too because they're very funny and clever and full of great characters.

Anyway ... we've left New York behind as Bunny, Diller, Smithy and the Sisters of the Saint head to Nevada to make good on their part of a bargain which will see Sisters Assumpta and Bernadette returned to the flock. This should, in turn, give Bunny the information he needs to find Simone.

This, of course, involves nothing less than an insane plan to break Bunny into a high security prison where he needs to find The Quiet Man, earn his trust and break them both out again. Easy peasy right? Wrong.

There are rival homicidal gangs, an unexpected meeting, a budding romance, snakes, alien visitations and a whole mess of the past for one of the Sisters to face up to.

It's bonkers but brilliant. I loved it. And now onto Other Plans, the final instalment.

Bunny is back

This guy is my favourite author. His witty and light hearted reads, just make you want to read on all the time. The book has a chunky and interesting storyline all the way through, with twists and turns. The characters are laugh out loud funny, and Bunny is just brilliant. My only criticism is the ending was a bit sudden. I felt they could have taken the story a little bit further, and that is all I will say without giving too much away. All in all though, another fantastic read from Caimh.

The Quiet Man by Caimh McDonnell is the third book in the McGarry Stateside series. Published with McFori Ink on October 7th, it is described as ‘The Shawshank Redemption meets Ocean’s Eleven' Now at this point it really is no secret that I am a HUGE FAN of Bunny McGarry, the main character in many, although not all, of Ciamh’s books.

When I first met Bunny in A Man with One of Those Faces, he was wreaking havoc on the streets of Dublin and beyond

“Bunny McGarry……well I so loved Bunny. Maybe it’s the Cork connection but everything about Bunny appealed to me in this story. He’s an alcoholic, a loner, a man with nothing to lose. He uses extremely unorthodox methods to reach his end game with the assistance of Mabel his hurley. For any of you not familiar with the hurley, it is a piece of wood in the shape of a flat type club that is used in the Gaelic game of Hurling. From a young age it is very common for youths to be roaming the streets with their hurley in hand, pucking a sliotar (ball) to each other or in the air. Hurling is HUGE in Cork, so the idea of a mature member of An Garda Siochána patrolling the streets, still with his hurley in hand, is a very funny vision.”

After LOTS happening through the previous books and, for reasons I will not divulge, Bunny is ‘presumed’ dead in Ireland but is actually loose in the States looking for Simone, the one woman he ever truly loved. The Quiet Man continues with Bunny’s search for Simone, but at this stage he has a few rather unorthodox friends to give him a hand, including a bunch of nuns from The Sisters of the Saint whose side you do not want to get on the wrong side of. You have been warned!

‘It’s like Jack Reacher if he’d taken more of a shine to the drink’

Now there are many descriptions for Bunny McGarry but that is probably one of my all time favourites. Bunny has literally no filter and no fear. In The Quiet Man Bunny rolls into Stanton, a virtual ghost town located outside Vegas and, in typical Bunny fashion, it is rather a dramatic entrance. For reasons that will become clear Bunny finds himself soon locked up in Longhurst prison.

Meanwhile, Sister Joy, an anarchic member of the motley crew comprising the Sisters of the Saint, is kidnapping a man from his kidnappers with the justification that they need him more. Sister Joy is described as ‘five foot nothing, stoutly built for a chick, and South-east Asian, although she spoke with the deep husky growl of a longshoreman. She wore a leather jacket, Doc Martens and black cargo pants topped off with a nun’s habit over a bald head, Her scowling face was accentuated by a scar that ran down the left side, from just below the eye-socket until it blended into the jawline. The skin there was red and puckered, and she made no effort to conceal it. She also sported a patch over her left eye. It was quite the look’ Sister Joy is on a mission and the Razorbacks, a biker gang led by John Manzano, aka Mad Dog, a gang with a nasty reputation were not going to get in her way. Arthur Faser is her objective, a man who looks very unsuspecting, but has his own rather unique ability, one that the Sisters of the Saint are very anxious to utilise.

With Bunny in prison and Arthur Faser in captivity, a plan begins to take shape.

Caimh McDonnell takes the reader on another wild and highly entertaining adventure with a very rich array of characters that I have come to expect from these novels. Caimh has created a wonderfully eccentric and bullish anti-hero in Bunny McGarry. The man is relentless in his objective, with no sense of fear and with that typical Corkonian wit of seeing humour in every situation. His two sidekicks Diller and Smithy make an always welcome appearance with their loyalty to Bunny very evident at all times. The Quiet Man is a madcap tale continuing the hilarious adventures of Bunny and his buddies. Caimh McDonnell will always take the reader away from the reality of this chaos that we are currently living through. I oft-times say that Bunny McGarry should really be seen on our screens as a real-life character. At one point I was thinking Tommy Tierney but now I’m steering more toward Colm Meaney in the role of this iconic resilient Irish man, who takes no bull from anyone.

The Quiet Man is a warm, funny, chaotic read providing all who love Bunny (& Caimh’s writing) with a much-needed injection of fun. We ALL need to find humour wherever we can at the moment and I can guarantee you will find that in Caimh McDonnell’s words. These books have a large following and there is good reason for this. Packed with a sharp and witty dialogue and added to that a fabulous array of superb and brilliantly depicted characters, Caimh McDonnell has created something very special within the pages of these books.

Mischievous. Imaginative. Witty.

This one was much better that the first two in this series with a new set of badass Sisters of the Saint. And the book ends with a big cliffhanger - I mean, not everyone knows the significance of Jaffa cakes.

Caimh is a very talented writer in my opinion. Keeps you guessing, keeps you laughing, and keeps you up all night cuz you can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks for another great Bunny adventure. What's next in the search for Simone? Can't wait but give me a day to catch up on some zzzzzzzs first.

Super hilarious, fun read. Probably my second favorite in the whole saga, after “Angels in the Moonlight”. Definitely the most over the top one. Tech nuns, heists, prison breaks, snakes, UFOs, it’s got them all.

If you enjoy books that don’t take themselves too seriously, you should give this series a try

This was so great! Super enjoyable, often tense but also hilarious. I want to join the Sisters of the Saint! I’m super sad that I’ve caught up with this series and don’t have another McGarry Stateside book to dive right into.

The Quiet Man is the third book in the McGarry Stateside series. Those who have read the books up to now know why McGarry is in America – so lets not go into too much detail there.

While this is at it’s center a Bunny McGarry story The Sisters of The Saint feature very heavily here. If you have read the other books you will know who they are. Whenever I hear them mentioned I think of Father Jack in Father Ted because if I was ever in the same room as them, I would most certainly be doing my best to escape.

For those who are unaware of who The Sisters of The Saint are…. well they are a bad ass set of (excommunicated) nuns who aim to help people… by almost any means necessary. They have the worlds greatest hacker/engineer on their side – so they have gizmos and gadgets – and they are bad ass. Seriously, if you are in the same room as them, you better hope you are the one being rescued.

The story picks up some time after the end of Book 2. McGarry once again has been thrust into an unlikely situation – but once again appears to be quietly confident throughout. Bunny quickly gets himself arrested but it quickly becomes clear that this is all part of an overall plan to break somebody else out.

Bunny is on the inside while the Sisters are on the outside pulling the strings (and being badasses – yes I have mentioned this before but it warrants another utterance). While Bunny tries to “make nice” in prison he must keep up the facade that he is NOT a former police officer. We all know what happens to cops in prison. Aside from one simple misunderstanding about Biscuits and Gravy this seems to go quite swimmingly. Bunny’s time in prison makes for interesting reading, and is at times hilarious.

Of course, while Bunny is inside we are also treated to the story of the Sisters outside. Their combined efforts at getting Bunny in AND out of prison seem to be taking a bit of a toll on the group. Their story is fascinating, and again, at times, hilarious. Zoya remains my favourite character in the series (aside from the man himself obviously).

Overall view? This is my favourite of the Stateside series so far. It had everything. A brilliant read, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next Bunny book!

Caimh McDonnell is brilliant. This latest Bunny, State Side is just as good as all its predecessors. If you're new to Caimh, start with the Dublin Trilogy. I have found these perfect for quarantine because i am transported completely out of my current world. Also getting a lot of exercise with all the traveling and running around. Learning to protect my abdominal muscles from laughing so hard. Now that i'm done, I have that little lonely place waiting for my Irish friends to come back again. And desperate to hear the Jazz lady sing again.

Another great book with great characters again.believable in a strange sort of way can’t wait for the next instalment just love the way the characters move from story to story they are like old friends now I just love the humour and fast tempo . you want to get to the end to find out how they get out of this one.thoroughly enjoyed this book again. A great author and terrific storyline each of the characters in this book could be a leading character I think that’s what makes for a great story you can actually invest in them knowing that they are going to reappear in another book

With any series, I'm always worried that the standard may drop. In this case it just keeps getting better. This is another story from McDonnell's wild imagination, picture a mix of Shawshank Redemption and Oceans 11.
I read it with at least a permanent smile throughout, when I wasn't guffawing out loud - not a book to be read on public transport of you want to avoid funny looks.
Good to have a bigger role for the Sisters and the reappearance of some old friends. Another Bunny winner.

Once again Mr. McDonnell gave us another story of Bunny (and all his U.S. mates) that was enjoyable to read. I only wish there could have been one of these books that was made into a movie just so we could put a face to this character that we have come to love. Some may be critical and say the story has too many unrealistic twists and therefore can't be taken seriously, but I say "C'mon, get over yourself and enjoy the book for what it is". Thanks and keep 'em coming Caimh.

As fabulous as the others

You have the fantastic anticipation of new Bunny book by Caimh McDonnell and you almost don't want to read it because then you will finish it and have to wait for the next one. This is every bit as good as the previous ones and most of your favourite characters are there. The language, action and laughs are all there as well. If you haven't read these books you have a treat in store for yourself. Enjoy.

Bunny is funny but the story has him in serious danger. There’s a lot going on in this story with a number of side threads. Not all of them work and I was planning on giving 4 stars until the nail biting finish had me round up to 5.

I laughed so hard and so often! I love Caimh McDonnell's books. If Bunny McGarry were real, I'd want him as a friend. The narrator, Morgan C. Jones, does a great job giving voice to all the characters.

Too much like Smity!too short

I can hardly wait to hear Morgan put life into this great story. I’ve read this version, and I’m waiting for the audio version to come out. I’ve also pre-ordered stranger times. I want to know how the exchange went in New York. Did I miss something, Or did a part of this book get lost in the mail?

Another great one.......

If like me you have read and love all of Caimh McDonnells books, this one will not disappoint. Characters and adventures galore. Just plain fun with laugh out loud moments, and the craziest prison escape ever. And of course any book with Bunny in it is a winner!
Thanks Caimh, please keep them coming.
