I love dark stories with anti hero's and this was right up my level.... And then just towards the end he cheats on his mate (heroine) with a woman he was already in a relationship which neither the heroine or us the reader knew about! Up until that point I was very invested in the story and then WHAM I was left upset and disgusted! I am more upset because the storyline drew me in and I was engrossed so def kudos to the author for that. I hate cheating and the way that scene was done in this book was heart wrenching and in my opinion not needed. Man I feel so let down!

Re-read: 2/28/2023. Again.
Re-Read: 2/7/2022...I just love this series for some reason.

4 StarsUpgraded to 5 stars because I’ve literally read it so many times now...

I ADORE this series and have read it so many times, I would be embarrassed if I had any shame. Claire and Shepherd win Val's Top Omegaverse Couple Award every time, for all time, and I just love them.

Fair warning, there are triggers galore here. Shepherd is a true anti-hero and is definitely not for everyone.

WTF book ?!

description

This book doesn't deserve any star as there is a HUGE cliffhunger and absolutly no indication nor warning about it. I hate HATE that !! I always feel like it is a cheap way for writters to force us into reading all their books :( :(

I should have taken the warning listed in the beginning of this book serious. It is dark. I read a lot of dark romances etc. and usually like them for the most part but this one was a overall pretty repulsive to me.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This book also had many of my MOST hated book qualities:

* rape (repeatedly)
* Cheater (I don't give a shit about the circumstances, the heroine was pregnant and her mate fucked another woman while she was listening to it all, and he was even aware...............I don't want to read about shit like this)
* And the cherry on top was a shitty cliffhanger

I rarely use profanity in my reviews but this book brought it out. I found so many aspects of it disgusting and upon closure the main feeling I have is PISSED OFF. There were no redeeming qualities. By the end of this book I was hoping the "hero" would just fall over dead and the heroine might get her head on straight once and for all.

I am a bit curious how this story plays out, and since its offered as a kindleunlimited, I may check out book 2, but I hope to hell the heroine gets her shit together. I am a bit skeptical to carry on to book 2 though because this one ended on a cliffhanger, and writers who tend to do that continue with the other books in this series. I honestly don't think I have the patience to stick with this series for many more books.

So fellow readers........... If you have been brave enough to continue on to book (hot mess) #2 in this series, can you tell me if it ends with another cliffhanger, or if there is actually closure and it ends this series??? If book 2 ends this story I'll check it out, but I'm in no mood for another disappointing read that ends on a cliffhanger.

UPDATE: I have now learned that book 2 also ends with a half-ass cliffhanger and that the hero once again fucks another woman. I'm out - done with this series now. I will also be adding this author to my "AVOID" list so I don't make the mistake of wasting my time on this trash again.

I don't think this book is for everyone. If you are expecting some fluffy fake non-con romance where the male lead is really just a sensitive misunderstood alpha male, and the characters fall in love with some naughty bits in it...well move along. This is the real deal...its raw, dark, gritty, sinful and not for the faint at heart. Also, yes, it is kinda short, but it is a debut novel that ends on a sudden literal and figurative clift hanger. But don't get your knickers in a twist...If you follow the author online, it is a finished trilogy and the second part is soon to be released; it is not like you'll have to wait a year or more before getting more of your fix.

Ms. Cain, I love the complex and dark post apocalyptic society that you have created. Your characters are interesting, strong and have depth that we as readers only get a glimpse of who they really are in this first installment of your series. I do wish that this novel was a little bit long, but I'm hooked, and they do say good things come to those who wait. I'll be one of the individuals stalking your facebook page waiting for Part 2.

Wasn't sure what I was going to think when I started to read this book but boy in a word AMAZING!!!!. I love the whole idea of omega's, beta's and Alpha's the whole concept of Heat cycle's nesting and pair mates was so very unique.
A very quick explanation of Born to be Bound is Claire goes to try and secure help for her fellow omega's after the undercroft (prison system for the domed city) has been overtaken toppling the city's government.
The omegas are starving and being hunted.
Instead, Claire is taken hostage by the current Alpha Shepherd.
There's drama, an escape and some very shocking actions on shepherds part that literally stunned me stupid.
The mate bond between these two is damaged to such an extent that I totally get Claire's reaction to her current situation.
what on earth is going through that alphas head, I cannot get my head round shepherds mindset is he evil or just misunderstood time will only tell.
I don't think any amount of purring from Shepherd is going to get him off the hook anytime soon.
But it will sure be fun to watch him try.
What an enthralling read this was so looking forward to the next exciting instalment.
All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

Note to self: Cheating Hero.

Big spoilers for all 3 books.
He loves the ow, and he cheats on the h with her over and over throughout the series, because he can’t help himself.
And the romance series ends with NO HEA lol!

Hell no thanks.

Series end with Spoilers

The h is kidnapped and molested by the H’s beloved ow.
Then the ow ordered 3 men to gang rape her. She’s raped so brutally that she has a miscarriage.
Then the h commits suicide, thinking H died.

DAMMIT! WHY!!!! This had such a good start with so much potential! I was loving it and then the ending had to happen and everything went to shit!!!

Let me rewind here. Claire is an Omega who is off to try to save her fellow Omegas who are starving because of the recent events occurring in their society. She goes to the Alpha leader Shepherd to seek help..but then she goes into heat and he claims her. Some stuff goes down she tries to escape, he wont let her etc etc...

I really like Shepherd's character in the beginning. He was so possessive and constantly doting on Claire. He cared for her in his own cruel way... and although it was unorthodox it was clear he couldn't be without her.
"If I ever smell another man's scent saturating you again, I will hunt down the male and rip off his limbs while you watch... then I will fuck you in a pool of his blood."

I was staring to really like Shepherd and starting thinking he was becoming a good guy. AND THEN HE HAD TO HAVE SEX WITH THAT EVIL BITCH SVANA!!!! Why why why did the story have to be ruined with that scene :(

I know that he apparently did it to protect her from Svana because shes all powerful and was gonna kill Claire yadda yadda... so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt FOR NOW! Especially after that cliffhanger I need book two. I'm avoiding reviews for the next book because I want to have hope that Shepherd will redeem himself but I have a bad feeling he's going to disappoint me...

Well I’m certainly glad I waited until all three books were out before I read this.
I’ve been wanting to read this for awhile but it turned out it wasn’t anything like I expected.

I love a good dystopian and I loved this but I have to say it was a different kind of read. Generally there’s a whole load of world building but here we discovered this world as the story progressed. This means there’s a settling in period and even when the book ends there’s so much we don’t know or understand.

I loved both Shepherd and Claire (especially Shepherd) and all through the book I was wanting Claire to realise that Shepherd truly cared for her. To settle in and accept the love that would grow between them and then...

OMG NO. I mean seriously why?
And what the hell is wrong with him wondering why she isn’t happy.
What an absolute bastard.

There’s loads of reviews so I’m skipping a summary so I can move straight onto the next book.

Why the fuck do I do this to myself. It seemed like everyone really loved this and I wanted to give it a second chance, in case I was being too harsh.

IT GOT WORSE.

WHAT THE FUCK. how did it get worse.

DNF for a second and final time at 60%. Good fucking riddance.

DNF at 18%. 2020 is already shitty enough without trying to force myself to finish this pile of garbage.

Actually, you know what, that’s unfair to garbage. I would happily trade this book for a pile of literal trash can garbage.

UM. YIKES. Today, I came across a youtube video regarding this book. I looked up the book here on goodreads and LO-AND-BEHOLD I had already read it... and had rated it 1/5 stars back in June (I had a good laugh about this).

Anyways, if anyone's interested, here's the video and the NY times article.

I so nearly didn't pick up this book. All the reviews told me there was cheating, something which is usually a hard limit for me; but they also raved about the delicious antihero, the unique new MF Omegaverse, the scorching sex scenes. So reluctantly I started to read.

And then, suddenly, it wasn't reluctance anymore. It was awe.

The basic premise of this story is that Claire, an Omega, is abducted and kept by Shepherd, who's not just an Alpha but a leader in this futuristic sci-fi-ish society. Cue the aforementioned scorching sex scenes, which are as dark and delicious as the cover suggests. But this isn't just PWP. Claire, for all that she's an Omega and genetically inclined towards submissiveness, has a core of steel which really comes through in her actions post-cheating. I even found myself - a hardline safety gang girl - appeased by Claire's reaction to this.

I've knocked off a star for the cheating scene, without which the book would have been perfect, but Claire's behaviour to it certainly is perfect. I'd urge basically everyone to read this, if for no other reason than the really interesting world Addison has established here - though of course, Shepherd and Claire's relationship is the absolute winner here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5 Stars (pushed up to 5-Stars)
~Update Sept 2018: This was one of my first dark romances and I have come to realize just how amazing it is after reading other dark romance novels. There are huge underlying themes written behind the sentences of this novel that pertain to issues in modern society. . .themes many of the reviews for this novel have completely overlooked or perhaps they went whizzing over their heads. I have found myself pondering these themes long after reading was complete. I have moved my 4-Star rating to 5-Stars.

Original Review June 2018:
What if reality needed to written?
What if lines needed to be crossed?
Truth unveiled?
What if, at this moment, everything we hide is transparent for the world to see?

At first I thought it odd to give a "warning" at the end of the book summary. Of course romance novels have pushed the edge of what women consider appealing in dominant male characters. This book however will leave you reeling. . .literally reeling. I wanted to hate it all during the denouement, but I couldn't deny the truth, and in that, I felt compelled to finish what I started regardless of my rancor. I would have given it 5-stars but the book was left unfinished and the follow-up did not spark interest. Had the novel been written for paper and the pages extended to its full amount, what a wonderful novel it would have been.

This book is hot. I was enjoying it until the horrible twist towards the end. The whole book Shepherd didn't have any lover or anything and suddenly now there's a lover. His lover slapped Claire and while he fucks his lover, Claire is forced to listen.

Before this, Shepherd was trying to win Claire. Well, not in a very normal way. But the plot is different and he is an alpha and she is an omega. She is fighting him. But he was trying and almost succeeded. Claire was missing him and I was rooting for them. I was really invested in the story. But then toward the end, this horrible twist happened and then I was left upset. Why this author did this? She ruined such a good story. It's not acceptable 😭.

Fast-paced, twisted, and down-right weird! I loved it!

In an already post-apocalyptic world, where humans are basically enslaved by their genetics - as either alphas, betas, or omegas - the government has been overthrown by a group of escaped convicts. Their goal? The violent destruction of society as everyone knows it.

The story opens with Claire, a starving Omega, risking her life to approach Shephard, the new alpha leader, to plead for help. It doesn't go well for her. She goes into heat and sets off a sex-riot (I kid you not!). Shephard 'saving' her from certain death kicks off their extremely messed up 'relationship'.

Shephard was not a good man. He forces a pair-bond on Claire, deciding to keep her locked up as his sexual slave/toy/mate. He coerces, manipulates, betrays, cajoles, and as a last resort, abuses Claire - all in the name of gaining her willing submission.

You may be asking yourself why I liked this one so much. Well. . .
1. The hero is an alpha who is NOT parading around as a good guy while he manipulates the heroine. I prefer my manipulators straight up - and that's what I got. He also had this weird, soft side to him that blurred the lines for both Claire and the reader.

2. It was written in the 3rd person. With this story I appreciated the distance it gave me from the characters, especially from poor Claire. So at every betrayal, instead of WTF?-DNF!, I was uttering a shocked No!!! and stayed up later to keep reading.

3. There was no information dump. The world-building, while perhaps a bit incomplete, happened little by little, which I appreciated.

4.It was well-written. The subtle hints that both Claire and Shephard are the products of their upbringings were really well done and added depth to the plot.

5. Lastly, it was weird. I loved all the purring, nesting, petting, and the pull of the pair-bond.
I'm a little worried about my HEA though. Only time will tell!

Main genre: Science Fiction
Other genres: Dystopian, Paranormal, & Dark Erotica

General Thoughts:

I really liked the world and storyline, but the main focus is on the characters. I felt a lot of conflicting emotions for both Shepherd & Claire (the main characters). They repeatedly hurt each other over and over again, it was heart wrenching to read.

Despite Shepherd being a very bad man that does awful things, I felt a lot of sympathy for him. His beliefs are in direct opposition of Claire's though. I understood & respected Claire's plight, but did not feel a lot of sympathy for her.

Some people would sacrifice everything for freedom, while others would easily sacrifice some freedoms for safety & comfort. The book had me contemplating my own beliefs and how far I'd go for them in a world like this book.

I don't know if any type of compromise is even possible for these two characters, let alone forgiveness. But I'm very interested in finding out, definitely a series I plan to see through to the end.

Omg! Omg! Omg!

Just finished this read and my heart is pounding!

In Cain’s world Omegas go through a heat that can break the strongest Alpha. In those world Omega’s are being sexually abused, kept as slaves and dying at a high rate. Claire has been with an Omega group in hiding and forced to seek out Shepherd before they all starve. She believes she took a pill to prevent her heat and wore clothes covered in dead men’s sent to hide what she is...but he knows. And he takes her.

Shepherd is a relentless. He found an Omega in heat and takes her every which way possible for days. Then she is his after he forces a bond against her will. Shepard com not believe Claire escaped and eluded him for days. Once she is back in his prison he injects her the meds to force her into heat again. Refusing to let another day go by without her carrying his child.

Corday won’t rest until he finds Claire. He promised to protect her and her kind then Shepherd took them all before Corday could reach them. Corday isn’t giving up.

This ends on a cliff hanger. I. Am. Dying!

Happy reading! DD💕

You know those stories that are going so well, you're so absorbed you can't stop to do anything you must do to sustain your lifestyle... like work or clean or feed your kids... You just have to keep reading to figure out what's next?

This was one of those kinds of reads. It wasn't romantic but it was hella explicit and dirty and all shades of wrong. The idea of consent was a pipe dream, there was power exchange, there was a war-torn society, there were all shades of darkness.

And then the so-called hero did something that turned a 4 or 5-star read into something you can't even stomach continuing to read. He completely ruined the story with one action and I don't even care what his reasons were. He did it and my time with this story is over. Will I read the rest of the series? Ummmmmmm no because I won't even bother finishing this one.

The females were starving; unable to leave their hiding place for fear the feral men of Gotham would smell them. There were so few free left, so many more missing or dead. Desperate, an Omega was chosen to approach the city's ruler, to beg the highest ranked Alpha for help. Help was not Bane's intention. Omegaverse, slightly altered AU during the occupation of Gotham.

Born to be Bred by Itzy Strange (AC's former pseud) is one of my favorite Omegaverse fanfics I've read that later had the serial numbers filed off for publication. New review coming soon. I'm not planning on rehashing the Ellis/Cain lawsuit drama (even I'm now bored with it), but if you're interested you can check out my review for it HERE. I've been hesitant to repost this review anywhere, but after seeing readers opinions on authors with controversies surrounding them, such as Lauren Hough, I realized some readers like to be fully informed about controversies surrounding authors before they decide to support their work. If you don't care? Go for this series, but heed the warnings about this series being neverending with no hea as of yet. I can say I honestly enjoyed the first 3 books (but I'm personally ok with nonheas).

Original review from June 2019:

4.75 stars.

The Omegaverse genre is new to me, but I'm starting to really like the sci-fi/dystopian world that is in this genre. I put off reading this genre forever because of the class names: Alpha/Beta/Omega rubbed me the wrong way....idk it seemed kind of cheesy to me. The social stratification, power imbalances, and people fighting against the system is really appealing to me though. I like the bio-weapon element that was briefly discussed in this book (when the Enforcers discussed that Shepard was in possession of the disease, Red Consumption). I'm also intrigued by the Undercroft, and Shepard's mysterious past...I'm hoping there's more information about how he was born there in the coming books.

I was led to this book by the buzz it created on various Amazon threads. To be absolutely, 100% transparent, this book is for those who can enjoy a non-con erotic horror, and the author most definitely advertises it as such. The world-building in this paranormal dystopia is flawless; the author deftly establishes the setting without the dreaded info dump. The male mc is no hero, but the heroine is as strong-willed as they come, though she's at a clear disadvantage. It's riveting watching her begin to fold under the onslaught, and even I began to believe that the male mc truly cared about her in his own twisted way. (Still do! :/ )

If you've read the spoilers, you know what happens next. I was shattered by the sudden turn of events, much like the heroine. However, if you read the excerpt from book 2 included at the end, the cliffhanger is somewhat resolved and you even gain a little insight into the inner workings of our enigmatic, sociopathic mc.

This dark series is not a romance. But who's to say it can't become one? I'll be buying book 2.

It took me awhile to catch on to what was going on with this book. Other then the synopsis, the author does a poor job of giving any background of the characters, their culture, the plot..etc. She just plunges into the story. At first I thought maybe I wasn’t reading book 1. The author also does a poor job of giving a detailed description of the characters physical appearance. Other then eye and hair color and stating that the Alpha is huge with a scarred lip and the Omega is very small (nothing new there) nothing more is given.
The hero of this story is a real piece of work. So far he’s proving to be hateful with no redeeming qualities. That, of course, is what kept me reading this book. I go back and forth with the heroine. I can’t decide whether she is brave or pathetic. Maybe it’s a combination.
Book 1 ends in a cliffhanger. I’m hoping the author does a better job with clarity in book 2, especially since the cost is $4.99 for supposedly 200 pages.

This author repackaged an existing character (this book started as fan fiction) and a well established sub-genre (omegaverse) then goes and abuses copyright laws and DNCA takedowns to destroy authors that also use similar plot points and troupes. Hypocrisy at its finest.

She also played dumb and pretended it was all up to her publisher and she had nothing to do with it. Emails between her and her publisher came out where she specifically demands the takedowns and outlines her plan to hide behind her publisher.

Don’t support this colossal asshole who apparently thinks she owns the omegaverse.

Heres my source.

This book came for free with my copies of Swallow It Down and Dark Side of the Sun (handy to know if like me you are a broke bitch and wanna get 2 books for the price of 1!)

This book series has popped up a lot in my feed/book groups over the years but it just wasn't ringing my bell if you know what I mean?!? It seemed a bit weird and Omegaverse sounded... I dunno it just didn't sound like my cuppa so I ignored it.

Fast forward to sometime last week when I gave 5 star ratings to both Swallow It Down and Dark Side of the Sun (honestly, read those they are so great) and I got to thinking "maybe this will be good?!?" I mean if anyone can world build and sell me on this weird universe it'll be her.

Spoiler alert: It was fucking GREAT and now the bad news is this broke bitch has gotta buy all her books so I can know how it ends because oh my lord the drama, the angst, the Shepherd *heart eyes*. Give me all of that and then some.

Now if you'll excuse me, I am off to heat up my ramen and turn my heater off.

After reading Branded Captive, I immediately delved into the Alpha's Claim Series. I had to know what all the growling and purring was about. I have to say I am DOWN for this dystopian Alpha/Omega world. Holy shit. I read the series in 2 days and didn't budge from my couch because I need to know how it all plays out. Now I'm high on alpha and need more. HELP!

Ruined cities, hungry people, dystopian way of life and survival. It is an interesting story that takes place in an omegaverse universe with Aphas, Betas and of course Omegas who are the lowest in hierarchy.

The story is obviously strong in Dub-Con scenes, but it definitely lacks in romance. I could feel no love between Alpha Shepherd and Omega Claire.
I could feel only necessity, convenience, ownership, betrayal, obsession and desperation.
Not a hint of love. Not a touch of romance.

If you are looking for pink roses and fluffy clouds, better avoid this book. I was quite happy with what I read and I am curious to see how the story unfolds in the next book.

Be aware: Although the protagonists have animalistic traits, this is NOT a shifters' book!

!! ABBANDONATO !!

This is a totally new genre for me and I was, and yes, still, a little apprehensive about it. However, despite the actions of this hero, I enjoyed this story and I’m curious to see what happens next. As many reviewers have shared, Shepherd does something at the end of this book that is quite unforgiving for many readers, myself included. But somewhere in the back of my mind I want it to be not exactly as it seems. I do enjoy a bit of a twist in the books I read and I’m hoping that I will find this to be the case in this situation. I know it’s bad, I know there’s got to be some truth to what he did, but I’m a hopeless romantic and I know that Shepherd’s actions speak of more than what is on the surface.

So, I’m going to move forward into the next book although some of what I’ve read about this genre scares me at what might happen in the future. While there is much that I don’t think I’d like at all about Omegaverse, I do love the all alpha hero and if I find that twist and if this series ends up with a HEA, I’ll count it a win. I’m nervous, but I’m moving onward. Eek!

POV – mostly heroine but sometimes we get just a tiny bit of the hero although there is no distinction between the two which is a bit confusing
