Brandon Varnell is the author of several book series, all of which involve anime-inspired fanservice. Having been an anime nerd for basically his whole life, his books tend to reflect that. He likes writing stories with loads of T&A, shonen-style battle scenes, and steamy romances that are both light-hearted and erotic. He is also a huge fan of harem anime, so most of his books feature harem romances. If that bothers you, you probably shouldn't read his books.

It’s very interesting to *read* the equivalent of a visual light manga or 2-4 anime episodes. Instead of seeing the standard tropes (behavior, situations, etc.) you get to experience (and enjoy) them a little more deeply, with a stronger connection to the characters and the moments. Tropes aren’t necessarily a Bad Thing either, if they help identify and mark key items in the story. Then they become looked-for friends, and even get graded on the style and method used to accomplish the tropes. (Welcome to the essence of Japanese manga, where tropes reign supreme. They gambol and flock and mate across the literary landscape, with authors as their shepherds.)
This delightful series - like the author’s beloved “American Kitsune “ series - is very much a love letter to light novels and their tropes. AK is very similar to what you’d see in “Rosario+Vampire”, or “Ah! My Goddess!” including the harem elements. Except without the MC’s horrible inability to connect with the girls - then it becomes much more like “Sekirei”.
This series isn’t quite like that: it uses similar themes (tropes) but the characters are far more sexually awake, although they are held to the proprieties. They are also far more aggressive and capable, which is a really nice change. Introspective “Dither Time” is reduced from the traditional chapter / book length to the paragraph / chapter length, which is ... awesome. The same holds true for party member separation (which historically can be whole freaking arcs) but here is mercifully sacrificed on the altar of plot action.
Aside from the polished tropes, the plot here is really interesting, using different timelines and characters in them to tell the story. We also get to see good character growth, including their respective relationships and abilities. We also don’t have the whole picture yet, so knowing What Happens Next is still paramount, and keeps the pages turning.
Overall I really enjoy this series, and I strongly recommend it to anyone (16+) who is a fan of the genres involved. I can’t wait for the next book.
I really enjoy this series it has all of the good things of this type of story and not any of the bad. The story is well told and the adventures that continue are fun to read. Eric the main character has much to think about as he progresses in his new life. He continues to cultivate himself as well as the girls in his life. one of the things I like about this story is that the author doesn't go on and on and on about cultivating cultivating cultivating which gets cold pretty quickly. The story progresses and it has both drama and humor in it and continues to entertain in my opinion. The ending of this book has a satisfying ending and I can't wait to read what new challenges come the characters way in the next book. I for one hope it comes out soon, I would be interested in reading on more of the relationship between the characters.
I enjoyed the book. The only real qualm I have about the series is that the mc seems like he just forgot all his previous life skills and goes only one direction a lot of the time. Now I guess you could say he doesnt have his muscle memory anymore, but it seems weird to me when he fights and was like oh wait I have 2 elements I can use I forgot. Besides that this installment seemed a little short, but overall good. His weapon seems like a paper tiger though that could be the materials (so far it just looks cool but he fights better with his hands)
This is an excellent series overall. The MC is both interesting and in some ways a bit naive considering his backstory. Somehow the author makes this work, which is impressive since this is generally a pet peeve of mine. All of the supporting characters are well rounded and very much individuals. Look forward to next installment. As always my only complaint is how short the book is, but not enough to knock a star off.
This series is constantly making me love it more and more! The character development and relationship building is simply incredible! Of course this book wasn't as action packed as the last but you can sense from the direction this series is going we can anticipate some amazing scenes on the way! My one request is MORE spice! I mean think of all these amazing characters that aren't getting theirs! It's a crime!
Though an excellent book it felt a bit bipolar as the story jumped from the one future to the current events. It really felt like it was two different stories. I was really not sure which one I found more interesting to read. By the end I felt like I should’ve just went through the book the first time and just read one of the stories and then go through the book a second time and read the other.
Books 1-5 have been fantastic and I can’t wait for book 6. Book 5 did an awesome job showing Eryk’s current power level and I can’t wait to see how much stronger he gets before the big attack comes. And the final 2 pages of the book, once agin, Brandon had me cracking up with the awkward situation the MC found himself in. I highly recommend this book and series.
The story continues to flow, with action and danger to various characters. The story is firming into a harem tale with various characters agreeing to share the MC, but no real sexual activity between these characters yet. Looking forward to the next book.
This is one of my favorite series as the story is so intriguing and entertaining that I have a hard time putting it down. The MC is growing into a very good character and the secondary characters are interesting and fun to read about as well.Overall I enjoyed this book.
This series was again good and actually keeps the reader engaged I actually tried to purposely slow down reading this so that it won’t be much of a delay for the next one so hopefully by this point I’m not biased (think that’s how u spell it) because I’m currently reading 4 of this authors series
The story certainly had taken a turn toward the darker, which I really enjoyed. Things are heating up. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I was only sorry that the book ended so quickly. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
Pretty good. mC turned into kind of an idiot at the end to drive the plot. Not much happened in this installment and it was short, with a good bit about f filler to swell the pages. But it was ok.
This book in the series is just ad food as the others but, learning more about the events in his past life are making many things more clear. I really like this one it was so good I finished it in a day.
If you picked up Wiedergeburt chances are you fell in love with the incredible story, engaging characters, and all around fascinating world that was created within its pages. It has only gotten better with each new installment!
Good stuff! Thank you! Was not expecting the newcomer, looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Not sure the harem should get much bigger though, otherwise screentime suffers.
It is slow paced but enjoyable. The only real downside to this story is the author keeps telling us about what happens in the alternate future and honestly it is not important at all since he went back in time in the first book, it won’t happen.
Good, but again suffers somewhat from changes in perspective; that's not a critical failure though. I do however feel that it didn't move the story's yardsticks as much as I think it should have.
Anyway, I'm still reading, so I'll check out the next one and see if it keeps me on the hook.
I love this series, the storyline is great and the characters are so well written that they really grow on you. I can't wait for the next book, I'm sure it will exceed expectations.
Honestly save the looong flashbacks for a separate series. I don't need to know every little detail of Eric boning Kari in a past life. Just keep the story moving.
Glad she got him before his was able to do what he wanted. Really want to know what the new girl can do. Might be as simple as leaving her in their company will do the trick.
At this point, the book could turn a corner and really amp up the story. Instead it descended into cliche anime tropes. The next in the series will make it or break it for me.
This was another great volume in the series and I like where the story is going. The past part is getting more interesting. Definitely worth the time to read you will like it.
Another fun book in the series has we see our hero come clean with the different women in his life and embark on new adventures. The flashback to his previous life let's slip a few nuggets that are interesting.
The story was good overall. I like the interaction between the characters the pacing was a bit slow at times in my opinion this story would work well as an anime series
Not much to say but a good read, as the story continues to develop with both the present and future past as we start to see a greater view of the world
Another good book in the series. The series is really good. I feel like there wasn't a major plot point in this book. But was worth the read none the less.
