Heather Day Gilbert, an RWA Daphne du Maurier Award-winning author and 2-time ECPA Christy Award finalist, enjoys writing contemporary mysteries/psychological thrillers and Viking historicals. She brings authentic family relationships to the page, and she particularly delights in heroines who take a stand to protect those they love. Avid readers say Heather's realistic characters—no matter what century—feel like best friends. When she's not plotting stories, this native West Virginian can often be found hanging out with her husband and four children, playing video games, or reading Agatha Christie novels.
These stories are really good mysteries with strong characters. The animals in the stories are sweet too. There is a bit of romance with the main characters brother and sister who are both recovering from failed relationships. The mysteries are better than most with rather surprising endings, so you never can figure out who the bad guy is and who the murderer is like with some mysteries. Definitely recommend to mystery lovers.
I really enjoyed these books. The rapport the brother and sister have is touching. The idea he has for the cafe is ingenious and I actually wonder if there is a place where you can drink coffee and pick up a pet. The mysteries are enthralling. All in all, the books are captivating.
A couple of errors, one factual and one grammatical made these books less enjoyable than they might be.
Did you know that a Labradoodle is a purebred dog? Apparently this author believes that is true as at least 3 of her characters intoned that gem. So, to clarify and enlighten "A Labradoodle is a crossbreed dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard, Miniature, or Toy poodle." (From Wikipedia) See? Not a purebred dog, a fancy and expensive mutt.
Now, let's add the oft wrongly answered question in this book "Do you mind if I ____?". In these books, the answer is always "Yes, go ahead and _____." However that is NOT correct, the question actually is "DO YOU MIND?" The answer should be "No, I don't mind if you ____.". If you can't answer the "Do you mind?" question with no, then drop either yes or no and let the answer be inferred. "Do you mind if I __?" "Go right ahead and ___" where the answer "no I don't mind" can be understood by the answer.
Trying to simply accept these errors and move forward with the story drags down the pleasure of reading. Bad writing and worse editing to let them be published.
The plot I hate - the amateur sleuth risking herself and the investigation by breaking the law in search of clues. I wish authors would give up on this overused plot!

The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.
Really enjoyed this series and hope to read more. Bo retired from the DEA and his sister Macy escaped from a cheating husband. They moved back to their hometown and opened the Barks and Beans Cafe. Half is a fancy coffee shop and the other is an area that showcases dogs from the local shelter. But murder, mysteries and an old nemesis of Bo's have a way of creeping into their new lives.
I enjoyed reading these three books, because they were interesting and had some nice dogs. Coal, the enormous Great Dane, was a wonderful character who sounded like the ideal companion. I loved the Barks &Beans cafe and how they helped get the local shelter's dogs adopted. The murders and dramatic experiences were complicated, but also believable.
I enjoyed the interpersonal relationships, the twists and turns that keep you guessing and the easy read and fun that makes this series a great summer read.
I enjoyed all 3 mysteries and loved how they had a coffee shop with a dog section where they had different shelter digs and people could sit with them and even adopt them. The mysteries were really good and interesting!
