I grew up in a house filled with books and readers. Some of my fondest memories are of reading in the same room with my mother and sisters, arguing about whose turn it was to make tea. No one wanted to put their book down!
I was introduced to romance because of my mom’s habit of leaving books all over the house. One day I picked one up. I still remember the cover. It was a Harlequin by Janet Daily. Little did I know at the time that it would set the stage for my future. I went on to discover mystery novels. Agatha Christie was my favorite. And then suspense with Wilber Smith and Ian Fleming.
I loved the thought of combining my favorite genres, and during high school, I attempted to write my first romantic suspense novel. I wrote the first four chapters and then exams happened and that was the end of that. I desperately hope that book died a quiet death somewhere in a computer recycling facility.
A few years later, (okay, quite a few) after two degrees, a husband and two kids, I attended a workshop in Tuscany that lit that spark for writing again. I have been pounding the keyboard ever since here in New Jersey, where I live with my children—who are thrilled with my writing as it means they get to eat more pizza—and my very supportive husband.

“Should’ve, could’ve, would’ve … Hindsight was twenty-twenty”

Okay! So I’ll admit right off, that I don’t tend to read these ‘happy ever after’, steamy, romantic/suspense novels on too regular a basis, however they are great way to ratchet down the tension between the more hardcore psychological thrillers which make up a large percentage of my reading schedule. I also know just how relaxing Lori’s writing style is and how she can add her own flavour to any storyline. This book is one of two which Lori has written, since she has taken up the mantle of contributing to the ‘Brotherhood Protectors’ series, which was originally begun by her fellow author Ella James and has now been expanded as the ‘Brotherhood Protectors World‘, with books being added to the series by many other authors.
.
Having previously read the second episode in the ‘Justified’ series, I knew exactly what I was getting from this book and luckily they work great as stand alone stories. With some great structure to the story outline, keeping the chapters short, fluid and punchy, the action hits the ground running. There was no let up in the pace from start to finish, and when it came, the end was satisfying with all the loose ends neatly tied up. When I say non-stop action, I mean in all areas, so whilst from a purely personal point of view there was no issue, for those of you who don’t want to get caught unawares, there a couple of scenes containing explicit sexual content and language, although it is totally an integral part of the story.
.
Two of Canyon Springs own, are reluctantly returning home after several years away pursuing their individual dreams and ambitions. That they have a history as a couple, is obviously going to set the cat amongst the pigeons, which it does with alarming speed and ferocity when they are thrown together again! Walking back into a minefield when another ‘son’ of the town is found strangled, Sunny experiences a sudden change of attitude amongst her long-time friends, when she is charged with his murder. Private Protection Specialist, Hudson, has something to prove to himself and the town, as he sets about keeping an increasingly fragile and vulnerable Sunny, safe and out of harms way, as the real murderer becomes more and more desperate and dangerous, taking evermore daring chances in an effort to remove Sunny from the equation. Hudson is man enough to admit that given Sunny’s very stubborn nature and the fact that she still bears one heck of a grudge against him, this is one battle he is not going to be able to fight and win alone, so he enlists the help of fellow security specialist and his friend, Rhys, who rides shotgun with a team of marksmen and protection operatives. Sunny is ‘specialist’ in her own right though, a food specialist, and it is her area of expertise and knowledge which eventually leads her to track down her nemesis and put a name to the murderer, although whether she is ever going to get to reveal her suspicions relies entirely on Hudson and Rhys, on whom she now totally depends for her very life.
.
This fast-paced, multi-layered story, is richly textured, with a finely balanced and compelling blend of an intriguing murder/mystery and some racy, sultry, erotic romance. As the suspense heightens, the tension ramps up and as ever increasingly dangerous events draw Sunny and Hudson further into their clutches, the couple are literally thrown together, so it isn’t difficult to work out, that the action between them personally, is only heading in one direction, the bedroom, if they make it that far! The atmosphere, both between the sheets and surrounding the case, is constantly taut and intense, as Sunny continually fights against Hudson, only adding to the danger, as he begins to take his eye off the ball in protecting her. The synergy between the two of them is sizzling to say the least, that’s when they are not tearing strips off each other that is! With the skilled confident ease and total assurance I have come to expect from Lori’s writing the fast changing dynamics of this storyline are compelling, as those extra twists in the tail are set to mask the perpetrator and throw us unsuspecting armchair detectives off the scent.
.
For the most part, Lori has created an authentic, multi-faceted cast of characters who were well developed and defined, easy to connect with and invest in, although there were one or two who I didn’t take to at all, which I’m afraid to say didn’t include the real murderer, so perhaps my judgement isn’t all that sound after all! Lori seems to have left her characters to make and shape this story, giving them a strong voice, whilst offering just the lightest of guiding hands when she felt it necessary. Their conversational dialogue really drew me into a community which is very much at odds with itself right now, as personal agendas have been allowed to surface, which have revealed and laid bare a good many vulnerabilities and long-term hidden grudges, none more evident than that between the local police chief and county sheriff, which always seems to surface on such occasions and adds a real sense of time and place to these small town locations.
.
Chilling, yet erotic and sexy, this one ticked quite a few of my boxes for a satisfying read; enjoyment, escapism, emotion, entertainment and engagement! Who could ask for more?

Thoughts: This is a “second chance” romance in that the main characters—Sunny and Hudson—were sweethearts in high school, then he left. And it’s up to him to keep her safe as the entire town turns against her. The chemistry between the two characters is well done and the things that happen to Sunny (food dumped on her, her car damaged, attacks, and more) are believable. Sunny wants nothing to do with Hudson because of their past, but he’s determined to make sure she’s safe from whoever is trying to kill her. The action is fast, and the growing passion between the two is believable. And I was kept guessing as to who the killer was until the very end. I hadn’t read any of this author’s books before, but you can be certain that I’m going to look for more.

What I liked: The back and forth between Hudson and Sunny. She wants nothing to do with him, but her grandmother wants her protected and he’s the one to do it. She’s stubborn, but so is he. Both of them knock heads more than once, but it all works out in the end. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the diner and the other characters. So much fun within the action.

What I didn’t like: very little. It’s a good book with good characters. There were a couple very minor typos – but that’s to be expected. Overall, the editing was well-done and the reading went very fast.

Recommendation: If you’re looking for romance with suspense and action, pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed. And I’m going to look for more by this author.

Now, I’m a sucker for a second chance, and the fact that this theme is at the heart of this book made me instantly warm to it. But add to that, the Brotherhood Protectors World and a tie-in to the author’s Callahan Security series, and there was no way I could resist. The chemistry between Sunny and Hudson is compelling to watch. I was so glad to see them air out their past grievances and hurts. This is a book that felt like it went by in the blink of an eye. It pulled me into the mystery, the story, and the whole thing went by in blur of action, suspense, and misdirection. At no point in the story was I able to outthink the plot. All the necessary clues were there, but I was successfully distracted by everything else that was going on and never managed to put them together before the book was over. Before I even started reading this, I was already a fan of the author’s work. Now I can’t wait to see what she gives us next.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.

I must admit that I wasn’t familiar with the “Brotherhood Protectors” world, but I’m a big fan of Lori Matthews’ “Callahan Security” series, so I was anxious to read this book. I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a great second chance romance/mystery, and both Sunny and Hudson were interesting characters. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything by not having read the other books in the series, and it’s actually made me want to check the others out. Lori Matthews is great at writing action-filled romances, with just the right touch of romance, mystery and suspense. And while this book was a bit lighter on the latter two, it still made for a great read. I meant to only get started on the book before going to bed, but ended up reading the entire story in one sitting. It kept me interested from beginning to end and I was on the edge of my seat several times. I would definitely recommend the book, and look forward to reading more from Lori Matthews.

Spoiler

The whole town turned against her thinking she killed Wayne, so then it came out that the real killer did and why. I can understand her staying in the town because of her Gran but how did the towns folk treat her after the killer was found? Part of the story was the towns harassment and that while part was just left hanging. she was kicked out of the spa because everyone thought she killed Wayne, so as the new manager did she fire everyone? You cant have a major part of the story left hanging at the end of the book!

Murder/mystery with a healthy dose of romance.
This book is from a series (Brotherhood Protectors) I don’t think you need to read the previous books (I don’t think I missed anything)
Hudson has finally returned home, after years of serving his country and getting a job as a bodyguard he’s back to lend the family a helping hand at the ranch they own.
He’s taken a job as a favour to a friend, but this one could be the trickiest one ever!
Sunny didn’t think she’d be too long visiting her gran, that was two years ago! Leaving LA had been a hard decision, but she was needed here, if she’d known then that two years late she’d be charged with murder she would have thought twice! But it’s the hate the town is throwing at her that hurts the most!
Sunny and Hudson have history, childhood sweethearts, and lovers. But after Hudson left her, Sunny had moved on with her life. Knowing he was in town was hard enough, knowing he was now her shadow was going to be painful......
But someone killed Wayne, and if it wasn’t Sunny then they are still out there. And Sunny is in danger!!
Really well written, it’s not a short story, it’s somewhere in the middle.
I liked Sunny and Hudson. They had history and I was curious as to why Hudson left Sunny all those years ago.
I get the impression Sunny isn’t a damsel in distress, she’s an independent woman, but being made the target of a murder has to be frightening!
The clues are all there to figure out who did it, and a few twists along the way make it an interesting read.
So when Hudson finally gets Sunny to agree to be her shadow you can be assured he won’t be in the background.
There are sparks between Sunny and Hudson, but she won’t be letting him back in, he ripped out her heart when he left town, so he won’t be getting another chance. But Sunny can’t help reminiscing about the past, and with Hudson her heart won’t listen to her head.
But how can she even think of her ex when there is a murder trial hanging over her head?
Hudson is like a dog with a bone, he knows his Sunny didn’t kill Wayne. But who did? And will she be next?
My interest is now piqued, I’m going to be adding this series to my TBR list.

Lori Matthews continues to solidify her spot as a romance author as she adds her name and talent to the Brotherhood Protectors World series spanning many authors and many, many books.

According to Goodreads.com, author Lori Matthews has eight distinct works, all of which are housed in the romance genre and not afraid to pack a suspenseful punch.  However, unlike Matthews’ Callahan Security series, “Justified Misfortune” detours from the world of espionage and into the back country rancher life as she introduces us to Hudson Riggs, former Navy SEAL returned to his mother’s ranch and Sunny Travers, Hudson’s high school flame, also recently returned home to care for her aging grandmother.

Despite the short page count, at just under 200 pages, Matthews packs in a lot of story into this quick read.  Diving right in, no time is wasted on developing each character separately, as the reader is exposed to a mysterious murder of a hometown hero that the town appears to believe Sunny committed.  Small town loyalties come to a head as the high school history between Hudson and Sunny drives the romantic story line.  The suspense arises as Hudson uses his Navy SEAL training to protect Sunny from more than just the town bullying and harassment.

Arguably, the most frustrating part of “Justified Misfortune” is that the story between Hudson and Sunny just seems to get going as the book wraps up.  Two hundred pages with a cast you quickly come to love just isn’t enough time with them.  After a swift build and rapid glance at both Sunny and Hudson’s new lives back in their hometown, the action comes fast and furious, dissipating almost as speedy as it begins, wrapping into a nicely tied bow that is common across this genre.

All the characteristics of Matthews’ writing we’ve come to love remain on full display as she jumps from international, tech driven settings and plots with the Callahan brothers to the small town, country feel present in the Brotherhood Protectors line of characters. Her releases have become those I’m instantly drawn to and eagerly anticipate hitting shelves and this one is no exception.

Murder, mystery, intrigue, and a second chance at romance. What's not to like? Lori Matthews contribution to the Brotherhood Misfortune World was great.

Sunny and Hudson, high school sweethearts until Hudon left with only a note, leaving Sunny devastated. They both go on to careers that are very satisfying and until Sunny comes back to her hometown to care for her grandmother, all is well.

A murder that Sunny is accused of but didn't commit and Hudson coming back to town to help his mom, brings them back together. When they get too close to identifying the real murderer, things heat up. Will Hudson be able to save Sunny?

This was a great, quick read. Lots of tension and you really don't know who really was the murderer until almost the very last chapter of the book.

Who can you trust?

When the town turns against her Sunny has no idea who can be trusted, the last person she expects to defend her is Hudson. She knows she can trust him with her safety, but can she guard her heart whilst he guards her body?
Sunny is beaten down and overwhelmed, but there is a spark in her that you have to like, especially when she faces off with Hudson! He is a yummy, growly, Alpha protector who will protect her with his life but can he forgive himself for the way her left 12 years ago? If he wants a second chance with his first love he needs to prove to himself and Sunny he is all in this time.
This is the first book that I have read by Lori Matthews, but I really enjoyed it and will be looking for more. There was one minor typo near the beginning of the first chapter, but no more were found! I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

This is a story about an old flame who returns to an old hometown and becomes an outcast and gets blamed for a murder that apparently the sheriff deputy actually did. The murder victim was a bit of a player who was stringing along the whole town. The old high school flame returns and decides to protect his first love and figure out who is the actual murderer because he is certain its not his old high school love. There are several parts where the lady gets attacked from minor terrorising vandalism to shooting at her and finally a vehicle chase and crash with the murderer trying to hunt her down. In the end her man saves her and they get together as a couple. Its a good story.

second chances all around

Hudson and Sunny. High school romance second chance. This series is about protection and Hudson was a Navy SEAL, now a security protector type. Sunny is back home and arrested for murder. The story follows them as they realize the emotions they have for each other and solve who really killed the other town member. The killer was not much of a surprise, but it was well developed and entertaining. Rhys is a great character and I hope he gets a story. Jameson Drake from the other series had several mentions, but otherwise not really any crossovers. Clara, Sunny’s grandmother, was a VIP and I thought she was a hoot! I love how strong she was in her love, loyalty and humor. Good read!

I have enjoyed this story, it was part audience, part small town and totally second chance romance. The plot was good and flowed well. The characters were likeable and had good chemistry. I liked slowly getting information to try and work out who was the killer and I enjoyed seeing Hudson and Sunny work through everything. For me, I would have liked to have seen Sunny get some retribution for all she's been put through and I wonder if Rhys will get his own story as he was a good friend to both Hudson and Sunny, plus I liked him as a character. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.

4.5 Stars This book has the perfect balance of suspense, mystery, and romance. The basic plot is a common theme, an former Navy Seal providing security for a woman needing protection. The difference is Hudson isn’t portrayed as an over the top alpha male. He is willing to admit his mistakes and is trying to make amends with Sunny for his past actions. What makes the story unique is Sunny’s character. She is no damsel in distress. She is an educated, professional woman, who has been charged with murder.
I was totally blindsided when the real murderer was revealed. I like it when an author keeps me guessing.

Hudson Riggs is an ex-Navy SEAL and he is home on assignment. He is protecting the love of his life. She was the one that he told all his hopes and dreams to and he left shattering her heart. Sunny Travers is home to help care for her grandmother, who is ill. She misses her life in California, her friends and her job. She has worked hard to achieve all that she has and now it may all go away. Sunny's life is in danger and Hudson needs to protect her at all costs. The two of them all these years later, still have sparks flying. Theirs was a young love, a first love. It never diminished. It is back and never going away again.

I received this book as part of an ARC review. It was well written but a bit slow. Hudson and Sunny were still in love with each other despite not seeing each other for years. When Hudson hears about Sunny's trouble, he volunteers to be her protector. To be honest, despite me saying it was slow, the book takes place in a very short time. During the time spent together, they get back together but Sunny calls him on his actions and he promises to be truthful always and that he was staying in Canyon Springs with her. The bad guy was a huge surprise.

Justifiably Awesome

Loved the second chance romance between Sunny, charged with murder and Hudson, the Security Specialist sworn to protect her. I love how Lori spun this tale of suspense and the history of Sunny and Hudson, who dated before Hudson left to become a Navy Seal, leaving Sunny only a note saying goodbye. Betrayal makes it hard for Sunny to forgive Hudson and allow him to do his job but love cannot be denied. Such a fantastic end to this story. Looking forward to more of Lori Matthews who is an automatic one click buy for me

Sunny & Hudson

The action changes quickly so you cannot be bored. Sunny, an events organiser, returned to look after her grandma and found a job locally managing the diner. Hudson Riggs returned also and was at a loose end after being busy as a navy seal. They both had history and Hudson was concerned that Sunny was accused of murdering Wayne.
In the end Sunny works it out, not before the killer ran her off the road at Dead Man’s Curve. She survives to solve the case.
Excellent read with constant drama, action and rekindling of romance. Enjoy!!!!

Two people with a past that didn't end well are now back to where it started. Sunny would rather be back in California but she is here to take care of her grandma.
Hudson is back to help on his mother's ranch and he works in private security.
Sunny has been framed for murder and Hudson is going to help find who is behind it.
Sunny has gone into town alone and Hudson has just found out. She should have been home by now. Will he be able to find her. Someone has caused her to be in an accident. Will she make it out ok?

Justified Misfortune was an exciting ride. I love how the author (Lori Matthews) created interesting & relatable characters while putting them in unique situations.

The one issue I had was I felt like I was dropped into the middle of the story. The back story was explained (and was good) but it confused me in the beginning.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. The review was voluntary. The opinions my own.

I love this writer. If you have not read the Callahan series please do. I loved all the characters they are realistic and relatable. I love that they are all have backbone but are also vulnerable and have self doubt. This story had it all heat, suspense, action, mystery, angst and a happily ever after. All these stories about Montana make it sound so picturesque and lovely, it make me want to visit someday and see for myself. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader copy of this book.

Hudson Riggs knows he should’ve talked to his ex, Sunny Travers when he left town. When Sunny’s accused of murdering their smalltown hero, Wayne Bradley (the next man). The town is definitely against Sunny, she’s being harassing and threatening her at every turn. Hudson believes Sunny’s innocent but not safe and can’t stop himself from offering to be her bodyguard pro bono. All is not forgiven as Sunny would rather take her chances than accept Hudson’s help.

An amazing second chance romance with danger, suspense, mystery and amazing chemistry. I couldn't stop reading and this is my first time reading this author. I enjoyed the plot and the suspense elements of the book. The characters were likeable, and while I suspected who the villain was, I didn't know their motive. The scene in which Hudson and Sunny talk about why he left was a bit anticlimatic.

This is an ARC read and a really good one. Sunny Travers has returned to her home to help her Grandmother with her restaurant and before long finds herself charged with murder. Hudson Riggs shows up to protect the only woman he has ever loved and to find the real killer. Can Hudson not only find the killer in time but can he convince Sunny that they still love each other.

Good read

Hudson had known Sunny forever, but he had left her when he graduated with only a note. So when he shows up out of the blue, she isn't thrilled. Someone has become a threat to Sunny and since she needs a bodyguard, and Hudson is a good one he volunteered for the job.

Plenty of action and trying to pin a murder on her, which she didn't do. But the people are really giving her a hard time, especially the threats. When her past love comes to town to be her bodyguard, she wants nothing to do with him. But she needs someone on her side besides her gram. A pretty good mystery. HEA.
