Can desire and deception ever add up to true love?
USA Today bestselling author Renee Ann Miller writes historical romances that are sometimes witty, sometimes dark, but always sexy. She penned her first book at the tender age of seven and even drew the impressive stick figures though clearly those characters weren’t as spicy as the ones she writes now. She has been a finalist in Romance Writers of America's RITA Award® and their Golden Heart Contest®. In her Infamous Lords Series the women are smart and the men notorious.
Renee lives in the Northeast with her husband and during winters is always anxious for spring. She enjoys gardening, DIY projects, and pastries. And though she grew up in a household of hockey fans, she now watches football, which is unavoidable in her house.
Never Mix Sin with Pleasure was a very enjoyable read featuring a romance between a notorious rake and a thief.
Olivia Michaels spends her days as a companion to an elderly dowager and her nights robbing nobleman to enact justice for their misdeeds. When her employer's grandson, Lord Anthony Trent, requests her assistance with his family's business, Olivia finds herself drawn to the man despite his rakish reputation. Anthony has managed to avoid anyone finding out about his trouble with numbers thus far and Olivia is the perfect person to help him with the accounts due to her head for figures. As Olivia and Anthony work on the ledgers each evening, the pair grows closer threatening to expose everything they've kept hidden.
Olivia grew up in an orphanage just outside of London never knowing who her parents were. While in the orphanage, Olivia grew close to some of the other girls who were the illegitimate children of nobleman and after her best friend fell ill and died she vowed to take revenge against the nobleman for abandoning their responsibilities. I wholeheartedly agreed with Olivia's quest for vengeance and I enjoyed the scenes where she carried out the thefts. Anthony has always been the black sheep of his family and resented the fact none of his family really believed in him. One of his biggest secrets is his inability to calculate numbers as he has a tendency to invert the digits in numbers greater than one digit. To hide his difficulties, Anthony lashed out and behaved poorly to keep anyone from looking too closely which only added to his status as the screw up of the family.
Olivia and Anthony actually meet by accident when Olivia enters the wrong carriage resulting in her employer firing her due to Anthony's reputation. Olivia then goes to Anthony for help and he gets her hired as his grandmother's companion. The pair spend quite a bit of time together once Anthony realizes she's a whiz at math. There's a lot of longing glances and a bit of flirtation while they do the accounts and I really enjoyed the scenes. When their relationship turns physical it's very well done with some great steamy scenes. Issues do arise between them as Anthony doesn't wish to marry and Olivia is hiding that she's a thief. I enjoyed how the pair resolved everything and was happy with their romance.
Overall Never Mix Sin with Pleasure was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Never Marry a Scandalous Duke, when it releases next year.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Stumbling into the wrong carriage has cost Olivia Michaels one job, but helped her gain another. But Olivia is more than meets the eye...her work as a lady's companion allows her to overhear ton gossip and plan vengeance against debauched lords. Lord Anthony Trent has his own secret. His brother has left him in charge of the family businesses but he has been hiding a struggle with numbers his whole life. When Anthony discovers Olivia's genius for sums, the two get closer than is proper and start to let down their guards.
This is the fifth book in the Infamous Lords series. It can read alone. Anthony is brother to book three's hero James and book four's heroine Nina.
This is another enjoyable story from Miller. The characters are flawed and that makes them easy to connect with. Olivia is trying to right a wrong in the only way she knows how: stealing from powerful men who ruin and discard women in their employ. Anthony longs for a love like his brother James and sister Caroline have, but he thinks his personal struggle will always be a wedge that keeps him from connecting in a loving and honest way. I thought Olivia's revenge plot was well developed, but I appreciated that it didn't overtake the relationship-building. There's also a cantankerous grandmother and foul-mouthed parrot added in for some comic relief.
Tropes: Class Difference, Revenge, Disability Hero

* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #NeverMixSinWithPleasure #NetGalley
Never Mix Sin with Pleasure, by Renee Ann Miller. What an exciting love story this book was for me to read. I loved everything about it. I can only give good praises about it. The author totally blew me away with the love the blossoms between Olivia and Anthony. For me it was like will they kiss or they won’t kiss. Their where so many at the edge of my seat cases that I had continue on reading the book to find out. I loved all the characters, except for maybe one or two. But the ones who have stolen my heart are the peacock and Andrews grandmother. These two had me giggling non-stop. Every time their character made an appearance, I found myself excited to see what they would contribute to the on goings in the house. I will have to say this though, “I never heard of bird soup”. The drama and the plot played a great part with the book. My enjoyment from this story is the beautiful love story that left me sighing in the end. My fellow readers, until next time... read on!
Unassuming lady’s companion Olivia Michaels is the last person anyone would suspect as the thief referred to in the London broadsheets as the Phantom. Her position in the home of a society matron enables her to learn the whereabouts of the noblemen she has targeted as a way to avenge some of the ill-used orphans she grew up with. But when her employer’s grandson needs her help with his account books, her attraction to the charming rogue Lord Anthony Trent, rapidly presents a threat to her own heart.
Anthony has spent his adult life misbehaving and acting the rake as a way to draw attention away from his difficulty with numbers. His recklessness has enabled him to avoid taking a role in any of his family’s businesses up to this point, but now with his brother going away for a month, Anthony must assume some of his responsibilities. Determined to prove he’s not useless, Anthony enlists Olivia’s help given her natural acumen with numbers. Time spent together going over accounts and inspecting factories soon leads to a friendship and then a deeper connection that could lead to the revelations of the secrets both have worked so hard to hide and which might make any sort of future between them even more unlikely.
I must admit to some skepticism about this heroine and her conclusion that robbery was the only way to have revenge on some of London’s most powerful and most despicable lords, but it worked in the end. Anthony was the typical rakish second son, but most of his bad behavior was aimed at hiding a learning disability so he was a mostly sympathetic character. The development of the relationship between Anthony and Olivia was gradual and occurred mostly on page, so I really enjoyed seeing that and them gradually opening up to each other. I typically enjoy the class difference trope and it was definitely well done here and the scene in which Anthony reveals his true feelings was a good shot of romance into the story, lest we think our MCs were merely in lust. I do wish Anthony had never mentioned the prospect of a position for Olivia as his mistress. I know he had his reasons for avoiding marriage and hadn’t had his epiphany of feelings yet, but I will never not hate that proposition being made any time I see it in HR. Beyond that, my only true complaint in the end is a wish for Anthony’s grandmother to have been put in her place, at least just a bit, as regards her treatment of Anthony and her frequent derogatory snipes at him. Overall, I actually enjoyed this story more than I expected to and will look forward to the next installment in the series.
I will admit to a couple of laughs when Olivia Michaels, mild companion extraordinaire during the day to a haughty Dowager, and rooftop thief “The Phantom” by night, plunges into the wrong carriage due to the mass of parcels she’s carrying, landing right on top of one of the towns most notorious rakes, Lord Anthony Trent. Mayhem ensues and Olivia ends up dismissed on the spot by her mean spirited, gossipy mistress. Having another goal in mind Olivia must continue to find employment in circles that will unlock the movements of the targets she means to rob. The reasons to Olivia’s pointed mission, those particular men is becomes obvious once we know her story. Olivia, in desperation confronts Lord Anthony, demanding he find her employment— which he supplies in the form of part time companion for his grandmother, the very decided Dowager, and as part time assistant to him. And thereby comes the answer and cause to much of Trent’s outrageous behaviour. Fascinating beginning to a story that just didn’t quite hold the line for me.
Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review Very entertaining, with a wounded hero who’s an incorrigible flirt while hiding a painful, secret condition. “Never Mix Sin with Pleasure”, by Renee Ann Miller (Kensington Books/Zebra), has interesting, well developed, alluring characters and a suspense plot that keeps the reading interesting. Anthony and Olivia are complex, well drawn and very relatable characters, both dealing with problematic issues. They’re both kind, sympathetic and decent people. I loved how their relationship began by a sense of kinship, fondness and mutual respect. They spend time together, communicate and take their time getting to know each other. Anthony is a great hero, a charmer hiding a world of hurt and vulnerabilities. The reasons he decided to deprive himself of a family are heartbreaking. The honesty with Olivia about his feelings is admirable. Despite a few dark moments and all his defenses, there’s a gentleness about “the black sheep of the family” that makes him very attractive. I loved how the author wrote the hero’s condition and how it plays a fundamental role in the story. The feelings of shame and unworthiness, the avoidance and fears are palpable and real. Olivia is such a strong, wounded soul, with a singular sense of justice and a deep need for belonging.
This is a generally enjoyable romance between an "unsuitable" woman from a lower class (she was an orphan!) and a notoriously feckless wastrel younger son (he has reasons!). Olivia is a kind, competent young woman who has a head for figures... and who is stealing from rich, lecherous men to get even for their past crimes. Anthony has been tasked by his older brother with overseeing the family's business concerns while the marquess takes a much-needed family vacation. Anthony suffers from dyscalculia, which not only affects his ability to run the business but has also affected his confidence ever since he was young. Keeping it hidden has been his main priority, which is why he has developed his wastrel demeanor.
Since Olivia can help him with his issue with numbers, and Anthony can put her in a position to gather information about the men she wants to rob, their partnership is mutually beneficial. Of course, they're already attracted to each other, and then their close proximity causes them to catch feelings... While the book is not profound, it is entertaining and fun. Check it out if you like smart women and the rakes who reform for them.
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
This is book five of the Infamous Lords series, however I did not read the other books first. This books does extremely well as a standalone. This is the story of orphan Olivia Michaels and Lord Anthony Trent, who is a confirmed bachelor and whose reputation precedes him. These were two characters that you couldn't help but root for.
Through a mishap involving Olivia tumbling into Lord Anthony's carriage, Olivia becomes the companion of Anthony's grandmother, the dowager countess, Lady Huntington. Lady Huntington's commentary and antics had me laughing out loud and she is a great character. Olivia isn't just a ladies companion and orphan, she is also a thief nicknamed the Phantom who only strikes certain victims in Mayfair. She is out for revenge and does it as only a true Robin Hood can. This is a slow to burn romance, but I have to say that I loved that they had a courtship and their interactions weren't just relegated to illicit bedroom sessions. The mystery plot of Olivia being the Phantom isn't the main plot of the book, their relationship is, which is exactly what I love in a romance novel.
A wonderful story with everything needed to keep you turning the pages! Adventure, secrets, intrigue and a fated meeting that will begin a strong romance!!
She grew up in as an orphan, and now is on a mission to donate money to help the children. How can she do that? By being a paid companion and gaining information so she can steal from the rich and give to the orphans!
He feels terrible because and accident gets her fired so he offers her a job to be a companion to his grandmother. By chance he finds out she can be a help to him his books that he cannot grasp.
As these two work together and support each other, it seems a romance begins to spark! Simply marvelous!
I can't seem to get enough of Ms. Miller's books. Her style of writing is perfect in every way, fresh and engaging from characterizations to settings to plot. Never Mix Sin with Pleasure is no exception! A deliciously slow burn at the beginning turns hot at just the right time. I love how she doesn't rush the story to get it in sooner as I've seen other books do. As I said: perfect!
I received an ARC of this book to read in exchange for a fair review. All opinions are my own. Never Mix Sin With Pleasure is the fifth book in Renee Ann Miller’s Infamous Lords series. It can be read as a stand-alone. The first time Olivia Michaels meets Lord Anthony Trent, she trips over his feet and tosses her employer's undergarments over his head. Accidentally entering the wrong carriage leads to her dismissal. When she seeks out Anthony to ask him to explain what happened, he hires her to be a companion to his grandmother and to help him with the accounting work he is doing while his brother is out of town. For years Anthony has been hiding the fact that he struggles to read numbers, Olivia’s help is a godsend to him, and hopefully, she won’t discover his secret. Olivia, too has a secret one that could have her hanged or transported should it be discovered. As they spend time together, their attraction grows, but it seems that those secrets will forever keep them apart. I enjoyed reading this book and the other books in the series. Steam Level: Medium. Publishing Date: June 29. 2021. #NeverMixSinWith Pleasure. #ReneeAnnMiller #KensingtonBooks #ZebraRomanceNovels #HistoricalRomance #HistoricalRomanceSeries #bookstagram #bookstagramer
Renee Anne Miller has once again created an amazing historical romance. Her characters are superb, the plots are wonderful, and the steam is top notch.
Oliva and Anthony are a wonderful couple, and from the moment a misunderstanding lands them as employer and employee, the sexual tension is on point. Personally, I love the lady's companion/assistant trope, and Miller does an excellent job in creating a believable plot AND sexual tension between the two. What starts out as an offer of employment out of pity, becomes so much more to the both of them. One of my favorite things in a romance novel is when the hero falls fast and hard for the heroine, and buddy, does Anthony fall hard and fast. He is a excellent teddy bear of a hero.
Olivia was also a delightful character. She takes the job with Anthony's family to gain entrance into the gossip of high society. This way she can gain access to the devious lords of the ton, where she steals money from them in order to help tossed-out women and orphans. She's dubbed "the Phantom," and honestly, this was the part of the plot that was unnecessary, even though it starts to get a little better towards the end.
I absolutely adored this book, and I've read all of Miller's other novels (which are great, too). Olivia and Anthony were such a wonderfully adorable couple, and I can't wait to recommend this to all of my friends and social media platforms.
Olivia makes a promise to her childhood friend on her deathbed, that she will avenge all of the other orphans born from terrible noblemen. Shr finds a position as a dowager's companion to help her keep that promise, but when an Accidental run in with Lord Anthony loses her that position, he offers her a new position. A companion to his grandmother and helping him with the family business, to help him hide his discalculia.
Loved it! It's really not hard to please me when it comes to historical romance, but this one did an excellent job. The characters were lovable, I genuinely cared about whether or not they worked out.
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC
Never Mix Sin with Pleasure has a fantastic plot - Olivia, our main heroine, is basically a Regency-era antihero (think Punisher mixed with Catwoman, and sprinkle in a little Robin Hood for good measure), seeking revenge on slimy rich men and making them pay (literally).
A case of mistaken (carriage) identity gets Olivia 1. tangled up (literally) with Lord Anthony Trent and 2. out of a job. Luckily, she finds work as a companion for Anthony's grandmother (a feisty matriarch who takes NO shit) and also helps Anthony with the accounting books for his business.
You can probably sort of guess how the story will end up, but it's worth the journey.
Thank you Kensington Books for sending me a copy of Never Mix Sin with Pleasure!
You have Olivia, a companion to an elderly Lady, someone of less than pleasing origins being an orphan. You also have Lord Anthony Trent, your typical handsome, funny, confident rake, yet he has a secret. I loved that the author did not use the difference in stations as the main factor keeping them apart. While I do enjoy those storylines it was a nice change. Instead, they were forced to overcome their own pasts and secrets to reach their HEA. Olivia is on a mission for vengeance while Anthony is trying to prove his worth. A fun yet compassionate read that had me 100% rooting for Olivia and her mission!
I didn't like it. Grew bored around 40% and skimmed to the end. The pacing was fine. The hero was decent, but lacked dimension. The plot was meh, but the heroine...god no.
Maybe I set myself up for disappointment by assuming from the book blurb that the heroine would have to have some spirit and back one to essentially be a cat burglar on the down low, ya know? Sadly that was not the case.
•⟩⟩ I didn't like the heroine Olivia. By 50% in I STILL hadn't connected with her. There was just something that made me not like her. Truthfully she was very boring. I felt a little sad for her when her past at the orphanage came up and I understood why she was robbing certain nobleman. But honest to God she had nothing to recommend her personality.
My biggest issue with her was perhaps her naivety considering her situation and what she was doing in secret. The poor fool was prime pickings to fall into lust with the hero Anthony. It wasn't until he kissed her, which happened to be her first kiss, that her crush flourished completely. Her inner thoughts became bogged down with schoolgirl like nattering about what Anthony would think of this/that/her or her wishing to do this/that with Anthony or where was Anthony now? Was he with his last mistress? And so it went. It really did take up an unfortunate amount of space with all the overthinking her interactions with Anthony and anything else involving Anthony caused.
It ruined her character for me even more when I wasnt all that interested in her to begin with. Olivia had this air of naivety and innocence though she liked to say otherwise in her thoughts. She might have seen some horrible things in her life and stole from others but that seemed the sum of it. She was a lamb to the slaughter. Put a good looking man who treated her like his equal and with kindness and of course the silly girl would grow a crush on the man. And girl is what she acted like. Not a grown woman. So it was hard for me to root for her as a love interest with Anthony. It was cringey.
It felt like the author couldn't decide on her character/personality traits either. She swung from speaking and acting like a somewhat sophisticated woman to a naive insecure teenager. It was giving me whiplash with how often it felt like kw as reading two characters when it was but one.
•⟩⟩ I did like the hero Anthony. I found it sad he didn't think he could tell his family about his affliction and difficulties. Even more he didn't feel he could have a wife or children because of it. I'm sure in that time era it seemed like a terrifying and embarrassing thing to experience. I still found it frustrating he never tired to tell one of his siblings. Why act the desolate irresponsible rake always out drinking and gambling just to avoid responsibilities involving numbers? Hm didn't quite work for me.
As much I liked Anthony he also came across as needy for someones approval. While that was all fine and dandy the fact it came from the heroine didn't work for me. It literally could have been from anyone else and been what he needed.
•⟩⟩ I didn't find much chemistry between Anthony and Olivia. It just wasn't there for me. Felt forced because the plot made it so. Otherwise I can't see the two of them ever once working together.
At one point the hero Anthony referred to a kiss they had shared as "incendiary" and I couldn't help but laugh and roll my eyes. Seriously, what kiss did he experience because nothing between them sparked anything at all for me. I was simply told it was so and that was that. 🙄
In the end I didn't see the appeal of this book. Anthony had potential to be a good hero but it was never achieved. Olivia was all over the place and felt unstructured as if the author hadn't figured out her personality before beginning to write. After book four, I gotta say this was a massive disappointment.
Never Mix Sin with Pleasure is the fifth book in the Infamous Lords series, that follows a group of lords known for their roguish ways. This book tells the story of Olivia, an orphan, who after a mishap on the street with Lord Anthony, which causes the loss of her job, is hired by him to be both a companion for his grandmothers swell as his clerk. However, Olivia is not all she seems, and is only using her position to learn information about other members of society so she can steal what she feels the orphans she grew up with (the illegitimate children of said members of society) deserve.
I would rate this 3 stars overall. My biggest complaint is that the entire conflict of the story is wrapped up in one page. It makes said conflict seem very ridiculous and like it wasn’t worth writing an entire book about. I liked Olivia very much, but Lord Anthony did not have much real character growth, just an acceptance that he isn’t perfect but could be good at other things. The relationship arc was at a good pace, but again, that part of the story conflict was almost brushed aside at the end to create the HEA. I have read all the other books in this series, and this is an issue that happens in almost all of them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Renee Ann Miller is an author I discovered late one Friday night and read the whole series in a weekend. Her books are delightful and this book doesn't disappoint. Her characters are just really well written, including minor characters. In this book, there's a naughty parrot and an irascible grandmother to provide comic relief.
Olivia Michaels, former orphan and companion to the elderly ton, is on a mission to make the noblemen of the ton pay for their sins against female servants. She dons a black outfit and becomes the Phantom, robbing them at night while they party amongst the ton. When she loses her day job because of a public interaction with known rake Lord Anthony (brother of James from book 3), and his opera singer mistress, Lord Anthony hires her as a companion to his grandmother and to help him with his business ledgers. Though it's never diagnosed, Anthony has a learning disability that he's hiding from his family. Olivia, never having a family of her own, falls in love with Anthony and helps him come to terms with his secrets.
I loved that they had a courtship and their interactions weren't just relegated to illicit bedroom sessions. Their romance and connection are really sweet and as the reader, you get to watch it play out in real-time. It's also not like other romance novels in that Miller's books take a lot of twists and turns. I really loved this book and thought Anthony was pretty funny in previous books, so it was nice to see him get a redemption story and to come into his own. Also, the Phantom storyline isn't the main plot of the book, their relationship is, which I LOVED. Sometimes, I hate it when there's a mystery because it's clear the author just wanted to write a mystery novel. Whereas here, it's a minor plotline that has to do with Olivia's backstory and her character as a person.
Well done, I am really excited for the next book in this series. Renee Ann Miller is on my list of authors to watch. I can't recommend this series enough. #2 is my favorite but these can all be read standalone.
Oh my goodness I LOVED THIS BOOK. What a enjoyable, wild ride! Olivia and Anthony meet under the most interesting of circumstances - she mistakes his carriage for her employers while she is carrying many boxes filled with goods and falls into his lap after tripping over his foot. It was a very endearing meet cute, but the second time they meet is when sparks truly fly.
Anthony is clearly taken with Olivia when she approaches him after being relieved of her duties with her previous employer because of the mishap in the carriage that sparked gossip. She comes to him to ask him for help to get her old job back, when he decides to keep her for himself...and his very particular grandmother. Olivia has a secret that she's been hiding...she is the mysterious Phantom who robs wealthy, horrible men in the night. She has a reason for it, but I'll let you learn for yourself when you read. Olivia is enamored with Anthony and his genuine nature, even though he is a notorious rake. I loved the chemistry between these two. Anthony suffers from dyslexia, a secret he has kept for many years, and he employs Olivia to assist him because she is brilliant with numbers. As their working relationship flourishes, so does their love.
This novel was a beautiful mix of comedy, passion, and suspense. I absolutely adored the ending - it was exactly what I wanted the HEA to be for these characters. Olivia softens Anthony in a way that no one has before. She was raised in an orphanage, so she's never experienced the delicacies of life...until Anthony. He loves that about her, that she appreciates each and every thing that is done and given to her. He marvels in her innocence, but that's what makes her so enticing. Olivia is an incredibly brave, brilliant character. She stands up for herself and others even when the consequences might outweigh the rewards. I loved every single moment of this novel! Bravo! 5 stars.
This ARC was given to me via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So, for me, this was just an average historical. I feel like I've read this story before, and that all of the plot points were predictable. I will most likely come back and revisit this at some point, and give it another chance after I've had a break from historical.
As usual, I like Renee's writing. It is short and sweet, with not many complications. I liked Olivia and Anthony a lot. Olivia for her being very brave in doing the thieving and for standing up against the dowager. She has a backbone of steel and I admire her for that. She is very empathetic and a caring person. As for Anthony, I like that he treated Olivia as an equal, not seeing her as someone below him, and was a very caring person. He genuinely cares about his brother's business, wanting to do it well and cares about the people around him. He has a problem with numbers and I like that Olivia accepted him for it.
The relationship building between them was slow-moving but there was progress and chemistry that I could see, unlike some books where they fell in love in a slow-moving relationship with no chemistry whatsoever. Their interactions were filled with sexual tension and sweetness. Olivia was hesitant because of the differences in their stations but I love that Anthony didn't give a fig about it and liked her for her and not for her status.
I like that Olivia's thieving did not take up a huge part of the book and the author focused on the romance building between the two. The dowager and the parrot made my day as precious secondary characters <3
However, I did think the sex scene could be more and more detailed. In the last chapter, I felt Anthony and Olivia could have spoken more about Anthony's problem with numbers and see if they can fix it or Olivia just assuring Anthony that she loves him despite his problem. But all in all, I enjoyed this sweet book.
Olivia Michaels is an orphan but is now companion to an elderly dowager until she trips whilst taking boxes of goods from the modiste & lands sprawled over Lord Anthony Trent. Olivia is dismissed so with nowhere to go she visits Anthony’s home & is given the job of companion to his grandmother & also the job of aiding him with invoices & ledgers whilst his brother is away. But Olivia is really the thief the London newspapers have nicknamed the Phantom, working in a nobleman’s home is the perfect guise to gather information, allowing her to exact her own justice on several wicked noblemen. Anthony has his own secret: Numbers get jumbled in his head. He’s cultivated his reckless reputation as a way to avoid dealing with his family’s businesses. Yet as obligations fall on him, he’s determined to prove his worth, and Olivia’s genius for numbers is a boon he hadn’t expected. This is the fifth book in the series & it could easily be read on its own. Personally I love that Anthony is the third Trent sibling to have their story & the dowager Duchess is just as cantankerous as ever. I loved Anthony who hidden his problem with numbers all his life & had found ways to avoid detection. Olivia is a woman with a mission, fulfilling her friend Helen’s dying wish. I loved the attraction between the pair, how they worked together & how their relationship grew & changed. I think this is my favourite of the series. A very well written page turner that had me captivated from cover to cover My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I love that Olivia is a thief.. a thief with a mission.. When she gets fired from her position as a ladys companion due to a small innocent thing blown out of proportion.. So she sets off to find a way back into a companion position.. she needs it to get all the gossip to complete her mission... What she doesn't expect is Anthony.. He is being left in charge of things for his brother while he is off with his wife, and Anthony feels out of his depth.. He has trouble mixing up numbers, and when Olivia reveals that she is great at numbers a friendship is formed..
Olivia is also a companion for his cracky grandmother.. a lady who has no problem throwing things at your head when she is upset about something.. and she seems to be upset ALOT.
I really enjoyed watching these two people come together, and unraveling Olivias secrets and why she is doing what shes doing, and how its all going to be revealed..
I also how when Anthony realized that he was in love with Olivia and told his brother, all he said was to go and get her. It didn't matter to anyone that she was an orphan, or a ladies maid.. it only mattered that they love each other.
I havent read any other books in this series, but I would really like to.. Especially to get James (Anthonys brother) and his wife Carolines story.
Loved the story. In my opinion it was funny, logic, sneaky, justice, heartache, trust and love. I am so far reading the series out of order. Renee Ann Miller is my favorite writer. Now onto book 1. Keep the awesome writing up. I will be keeping an eye out for more reads! 5 stars.
Never Mix Sin with Pleasure by Renee Ann Miller is what I like to call light historical romance. There seems to be this subgenre that feels lighter and fluffier with characters who seem a little less realistic, like they do or say things that wouldn't be typical for the time period. That said, I did enjoy the story. The story is sweet and predictable and perfect for when one needs a quick and easy read. My favorite characters were by far the grouchy grandmother and the dirty mouthed parrot. I love the humor they brought to the story. I didn't read any of the previous books in the story, but it never felt like I was missing anything.
Thanks so much to Kensington and Netgalley for the review copy!
I fell in love with this story and the characters. Olivia is determined to take revenge on wealthy privileged men of the ton. She puts herself in the position of companion to gather information on certain lords to carry out her plans. When a single tumble turns her plans upside down, she has to make new plans that throws her directly in the path of Anthony, a renowned rake.
I will be adding this book to my re-read list and going through Miller's other books. This is a wonderful story that is told beautifully. I would absolutely recommend!
Once again this author delivers a delightful book filled with wit and intrigue. Anthony and Olivia's banter cracked me up. I loved Olivia as a strong heroine, willing to take on danger to dole out justice. And the way Anthony tried to hide his problem and divert attention made sense given the lack of information and understanding of it during that era. As always, the romance sizzled and kept the pages turning. I look forward to the next in the series.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. Olivia and Anthony have secrets, and they come to a mutually beneficial arrangement for Olivia to be Anthony's grandmother's companion. The story held my interest and I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
