The Seahorse Cottage, Part 2

Rate this book
The Wellington family is ready for another sun-kissed summer at their treasured beachside cottage. That is until the family's world is turned upside down following the unexpected death of the father, Benjamin. Things seem to go from bad to worse for his widow, Bethany, and her three young children when they find out that their beloved second home no longer belongs to them.

The Seahorse Cottage, located on the beautiful shores of Cape May, had been in the Wellington family for generations. But unknown to Bethany, her late husband had lost the cottage as a result of his secret life and the cottage is put up for sheriff sale after his sudden passing.

In a surprising turn of events, The Seahorse Cottage is purchased by the Wellington’s estranged neighbor, who seemingly knew about Benjamin’s secret life. This would only be the beginning of the journey for the Wellington's.

The family is left to mourn Benjamin’s tragic passing, and only later do they come to truly understand the lasting consequences of his secret life. Through it all, the Wellington’s grow closer than ever, ready for whatever troubles come their way.

The Seahorse Cottage is a touching feel-good beach novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and fill your heart with warmth and love.

Poorly developed and shallow

I wanted to love the stories, but the writing reads like someone with the skill of a 7th grader wrote it. Duck and Jane have more emotion an more character development.
Jumpy, brief, devoid of any depth of thought or emotion.
It's like reading a blonde bimbo with nothing under the surface

Warning, if you haven't read the first book, you need to read that one first as this one picks up where book 1 left off. This is a continuation of the Wellington family's saga of their father/husband's death and almost losing their family cottage. It's a short story so no need to worry about it taking a lot of your time to read this one. Amazing characters and it's well written as you follow their journey through grief and the healing process.

Book 2 focused on Bethany getting to keep her Cape May cottage after her husband, Ben died. I really liked Bethany's message on bullies and look forward to finding out what happens next. I felt so sorry for Hudson but was so glad he had such a strong mother who believed in him and was prepared to take action against the families of the bullies if needed. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

What the heck

So many strange and unanswered questions. So much ado about nothing. The death of her husband was without a funeral? And she sent her kids to school without telling the teachers that their dad died? Yet so much talk about watching movies and shopping. Maybe I'll skip to book six.

This is the second short story in the Cape May series and takes up events in the weeks after Beth’s (Bethany) husband died in a car crash. The family lost their summer cottage that had been in Ben’s family for three generations, after Ben gambled away the full value of it and more. She was notified by the police that she and her three kids, Hudson (12), Reese (9) and James (7), were being evicted, but when it went to auction, someone else bought it, and she was given the keys back by a cop saying an anonymous person wanted her to have the cottage back for her family! The story starts with them going to Carol and Dan’s to pick up all the boxes they had packed and left with them, and moving everything back into the cottage. They only have a week left of their summer holidays, before school restarts, and spend most of that time unpacking ad putting things right for the next time they will be up there.

Before they leave, their other neighbours Peter and Ella come round to have a quiet word with her in private, and inform her that he bought the cottage for them, so she can hopefully help her kids continue to make happy memories from their times spent there. He is also guilty that he didn’t tell her about Ben’s gambling, as he knew about it and had presumed she did as well. Reese and James seem happy to be going back home after they close everything up, but Hudson is acting a bit sullen. This behaviour gets worse when she tells the boys that they have to go shopping the next day for school clothes, shoes and supplies. They also get to add one wacky item to their list of what they need for the upcoming school year. Hudson says he doesn’t want to go and doesn’t need anything, but Beth insists he goes with them, or stay at home and be hungry, as there is also no food left in the house.

Beth calls the bakery she owns and runs, the night she gets back, to find a new staff member is closing up all by himself, a change Ben brought in apparently! She goes in to help him and sees the bakery books and notices someone, obviously her husband, had been embezzling money from the bakery. No wonder it hadn’t been making as much money as it should have! Now she will have to work more hours there, whilst the kids are at school, to get profits up and help to keep her and the kids going with one less salary. Hudson’s behaviour gets even worse during the shopping trip and he insists on some expensive shoes and a backpack that are out of her range, but which he spends some of his pocket money on. He complains that she doesn’t understand, when she tries to speak to him and ask what is wrong. The first day back at school for all of them, soon explains a lot of it, when she is called into Hudson’s school, where he is being suspended, again, for fighting!

She knows nothing about him fighting ever before, but it seems five other boys have been picking on him for his clothing and school stuff, not being cool and bullying him and picking fights. The other parents are all well off and believe their kids when they say Hudson started the fights, so he and only he should be expelled! Their boys are all angels apparently! Beth now has a fight on her hands to defend Hudson and fight against these over privileged bully kids and their self-important parents. If Hudson isn’t expelled, then these other parents will sue the school board and insist he is, rather than their own boys. Beth has a few important people willing to stand with her against these other parents, but what will happen next, will have to wait until the next short story! A pleasant addition to the first short story, but I would really prefer to have something a bit longer to read, so you can get your teeth stuck into it, rather than having to wait to get the next one. I received an ARC copy of this short story from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion above.

I am not being a "bully"

I read book 1 and was amazed that a 63 page essay could qualify as a book. Unbelievable plot. No character development. Poorly written. Just look at the plotline. Is this believable? Book 1 - husband has such high gambling debts that he is willing to kill himself, his wife and an innocent driver. Lose the cottage, oh, that is OK, the neighbor will buy it back for you. Really? So unreal that I wanted to see what book 2 would hold.
Book 2 - Arrive home. No money to buy shoes, but do nothing but eat out. Apparently, the husband had no life of his own. A job is referenced in book 1 , but no concern from them. No insurance. Instead of grieving for her husband, Bethany is going to righteously take on the cause of fighting bullying. No money, but she can stop working and have the funds to obtain a lawyer. Speaking of her job as a baker - all her amazing recipes come from family or she blatantly admits to stealing them ( making little tweaks to make them her own). I am in stunned amazement. Take these books to an editor who can help the author learn to write.

Bethany and her children unpack all their belongings at what is now their Seahorse Cottage that someone purchased at the auction and then gave her the keys. She’s elated that they can keep their summer home after learning her late husband gambled it away.

Everything seems to have returned to somewhat normal, considering they’re returning home without Benjamin for the first time. Bethany manages to get the children prepared for their first day of school with a bit of attitude from the eldest, Hudson.

Upon returning, Bethany also learns that Benjamin had been skimming off their bakery’s profits and gave instructions to their newest hire that she wasn’t too kosher with. Otherwise the bakery was doing well and she was pleased with knowing this.

It’s when Bethany gets a call from Hudson’s principle that things begin to go haywire. Does this have anything to do with the attitude she’s suddenly gotten from Hudson? What’s going on here?

A digital copy of The Seahorse Cottage Book 2 by Coral Harper was received on Kindle Unlimited. I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras as I found myself wondering why Hudson suddenly had an attitude toward his mother. I look forward to reading Book 3 and find out how Bethany and Hudson handle all this.

Bethany, Hudson, Reese and James were able to move back into their cottage. A Good Samaritan had bought it back for them. But, it was time to go back to the city and the boys needed to get ready for school. Hudson’s attitude was going downhill and Bethany could not figure out why. Was it just the loss of his father or something else.

This book is a continuation and picks up where the family is moving back into their cottage. Good storyline with a cliffhanger at the end. It will tug at your emotions from the first page. Once you start you have to keep reading to see what happens next. I enjoyed this installment and eagerly await the next.

I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review

This continues the saga of the Wellington family. They are still reeling from Ben's death and almost losing the cottage. Now they have to head home and back to school. Seems that Hudson has been being bullied and the gloves are coming off. Good quick read that adds to the drama. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

After receiving a great gift, Bethany goes back home. It is not easy at all, and one of her sons has problems at school, problems she had no idea exist as it was her husband who dealt with them.
I liked how she supported her son and fight for him.

Bullying

A problem as old as time, bullying. Traumatizing to those who are victims of this cruelty. A young mother is faced with her husband’s death, his betrayal by gambling away all of their funds and her oldest son’s change in personality. I am anxious to see how this is resolved.

This family-friendly continuation of a fairly accurate portrayal of grief picks up where Book 1 ended and takes about two-and-a-half hours to read.

Don't even bother

Don't get sucked in by the catchy title, this is probably the worst book I've ever read. Totally unrealistic, and makes no sense. The only thing I liked was the title and the cover art.

Good Storyline And Characters, But...

It seems to be a bit bland and lacks emotions. The kids don't seem to be missing their father very much and Bethany doesn't seem to miss her husband.

You must read this series in order.
In this second installment, Bethany and the kids are gearing up for the school year.
Trouble begins on the first day and she learns that this is yet another secret her husband had been keeping from her,

The Seahorse Cottage Series

The books are way too short, once they get to a major part, the book stops. This series maybe good for young readers, I prefer a book that is more than 60 pages.

Reads like it was written by a novice.

The subject matter, bullying, is compelling, but the writing technique is very rudimentary. I would not recommend this book to a friend.

Unbelievable the bad things happening

I have always hated bullies and it always seems they think their precious brat can do no wrong. I hope Bethany brings them all down!
