Some solid horror comics in the EC Comics or House of Mystery vibe. These stories focus on variations of urban legends like Bloody Mary or the hook for a hand escaped mental patient. Suitable for teens and older.

Received a review copy from Zenescope and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

I'd give this book five stars for the graphics alone. It was beautifully drawn! The stories were really nice as well. The only issue was that in many stories, I didn't understand the conclusion or what had happened. It just wasn't clear. But I'd still recommend this to readers who like spooky stories and graphic novels.

Pretty solid. Very pulpy and schlocky and over the top. But it's horror, so in most of the stories it totally works.

A hefty pile of one-shot horror comics, of the very teen-friendly kind. Nobody will ever get nightmares from anything here, whether it be the twisty opener and its vampiric demons, or the global pandemic and its Twilight Zone-like one healthy survivor, or anything else here. The artwork is always OK, never brilliant or particularly weak, and it's all a perfectly reasonable time-passer, that will probably be forgotten quickly.

This volume actually collects issues 1-13 as well as all of the variant covers.

Great horror volume. This is as close to the old EC books as I've found in a modern horror comic. Each issue is a different story in this anthology series. Some of the stories are totally original, and others are classic urban legends updated. Just a really great series with great art.

If you're a fan of horror anthology comics, specifically EC titles such as Tales from the Crypt or the old Warren titles creepy and Eerie, you need to check this one out. Highly recommended.

I finished Grim Tales of Terror Volume 1. At around 360 pages, the comic anthology is packed with colorful art. The Goddess of Death tells a story in each issue. The stories are different. Some of the stories are totally original, and others are classic urban legends (e.g bloody Mary).

I read savored the volume ans read 1-2 issues a night. It was the perfect end to a busy day because it was just fun. There is a Halloween issue that is next on my TBR.

Highly recommend is you are looking for some pulpy fun.

Fun Pulp Throwback...

...if that's your taste. This is like reading the old horror comics with fun framings and good art supporting trashy stories that appeal to the horror fan kid inside. Definitely not suited to every taste - the stories aren't stellar, they're functional and paced well. And if you're in the mood for something like this, you'll be entertained.

If you like Tales from the Crypt, you'll probably like this. Our cryptkeeper here is the goddess of death and she tells stories to people who are going to heading to be stories themselves. Some of these stories are urban legends, some are retellings. Overall a fun, pulpy read.

Very enjoyable first collection of horror narrated by the beautiful Keres, Goddess of Death. All familiar tales with the excellent writing and exceptional art we've come to expect from Zenescope. Can't wait for Volume 2. Highly recommended.

Not a Fairytale

Before saying anything else this is a series of 13 comic books collected in one volume that often enough involves gory details, death, abuse, and a bit of sexy mixed in for good measures. Like watching Tales from the Crypt we see the death goddess Keres starting and ending each tale but instead of interacting with the audience she is part of the story in some way or another which is easy to see whenever you see the black speech bubbles with white text.

Amongst the 13 comics we see a few inspired by sources such as urban legends, original stories (as far as I know), and other source materials but with a name like Grimm I was really rather hoping for some twisted fairytales but I still enjoyed it enough to see it through to the end where the impressive alternate cover artwork for the comics can be found.

Here are some things to expect for Keres' Tale's of Terror without those juicy spoilers.
1. The Tales we Tell (Marriage turns out to be a pain in the neck when a husband makes some changes.)
2. Web of Deceit (A greedy man seeks the lost treasure of a people who worship spiders.)
3. Don't Turn on the Lights (There is a murderer on campus spelling out messages in their victims' blood.)
4. Red World (Like the Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe but modern and with carriers.)
5. What Lies Above (Creepy doll, ghost story, and attic horror all in one story.)
6. Monster Underneath (Monster under the bed makes a stands.)
7. Bloody Mary...Bloody Mary...Bloody Mary! (Revenge from beyond the mirror)
8. Black Eye (Hitch Hiking Horrors)
9. A Killer Hook (Southern justice on the twisted side.)
10. The Missing (A game of hind and seek ends with deadly consequences.)
11. The Doctor's Garden (A botanist has discovered a way to help his daughter.)
12 Buried Alive (A man is buried alive and discovers things are not always what they seem.)
13. Dead Girl Walking (Organ harvesting has never looked this sexy before.)

Zenescope’s "Grimm Tales of Terror -- Volume 1" is an ambitious anthology that taps into the eerie charm of classic horror storytelling, delivering a mixed bag of spine-tingling narratives. While the artwork is serviceable, it occasionally lacks the detail necessary to fully immerse the reader in the macabre atmosphere each story strives to create. However, where this volume truly shines is in its writing—though inconsistent, certain stories stand out as gripping, suspenseful, and expertly crafted.

One of the strongest tales in the collection is "The Black Cat", which masterfully captures the psychological torment reminiscent of Poe’s original work. Its pacing, tension, and unsettling conclusion leave a lasting impression. Similarly, "Bloody Mary" delivers an effectively chilling rendition of the urban legend, blending folklore with an inventive twist that lingers long after reading.

Not every story hits the mark, but the ones that do demonstrate a keen understanding of horror fundamentals—escalating dread, shocking reveals, and satisfying conclusions. While the writing fluctuates in quality from story to story, the highs more than compensate for the occasional lows. If you appreciate anthologies that embody the spirit of classic horror with fresh perspectives, this volume is worth the read despite its art shortcomings.

Surprisingly long collection of issues from Zenescope's Grimm Tales of Terror series. This is my first time reading anything from them and it's clear what their MO is. I don't have an issue with fun raunchy horror but I can see this not working as well for others. It's definitely in the same vein as an EC or Warren comic but almost never hits the same level of quality in any of it's arenas. The writing, stories, and art is all very similar across the board, nothing groundbreaking at all.

Would still recommend this to those who enjoy anthology horror but there are plenty of better options out there. Won't stop me from reading the next 2 volumes though.

Thirteen horror shorts linked by a seductive avatar of death.

Beautiful, polished artwork and stories which are more Tales from the Crypt than The Twilight Zone make this a fantastic collection with a really retro feel to it. Although it does have a few stories based on the old urban legends that everyone has heard a million times before, they all have a twist which makes them fresh and original.

The standouts here for me were "Something Underneath" and "Bloody Mary…Bloody Mary…Bloody Mary". I’ll definitely be keeping an eye open for more in the series, five stars given with no reservations whatsoever!

Definitely some of the most interesting stories from Zenescope. Worse people get punished and there's "death", who tells these stories. Lots of blood which is both good and bad.

Especially due to Covid, I've half been reminded of the story in this collection that also deals with the plague. Of course, it's also a Poe story -- The Red Mask of Death. But the visual and alternate story here are certainly interesting.

The spider queen story is also a standout! It makes sense and has a clear moral.

A collection of one-shot horror stories that pack a punch! I really enjoyed reading this and do in fact re-read from time to time and I still love the twist endings of some of these, I think they're so imaginative and just plain creepy. The accompanying artwork is really nice and compliments each story well. Also I love the recurring 'grim-reaper' type character that appears in each story, I don't know who or what she is, but she's always there to teach a lesson or moral.

I appreciate what Zenescope is doing with this series. Most comics these days are utter dreck and, while the story and art may be shaky at times, these Grimm comics at least actually accomplish something that is sadly unusual these days in any medium—they tell a complete story.

I prefer the stories in the later volumes, but these are decent.

Decent

I feel like these were fairly fun to read. The artwork was nice I think.

They take classic stories we all know and add a little twist to them. Each story varies on how successful it was with that. Worth a read but not really mind blowing. Doesn't need to be though. Still good fun.

Simply amazing, in horror meaning!

If you remember the old "Tales from the Crypt", here you find a fantastic collecion of terror tales, similar to the old TV Show.

From Urban Legends to old fears, like the monster under the bed...

Awesome modern horror comics with a retro feel. I loved them. The females in these stories are...let's say buxom, but the art work is great and the tales are terror-filled and twisted. Me lovee.
