Kameron Hurley is the author of the upcoming science ficition thriller These Savage Stars (2026), The Light Brigade, and The Stars are Legion, as well as the award-winning God’s War Trilogy and The Worldbreaker Saga. Sci-fi noir by Kameron Hurley, so any discerning reader knows this is good stuff. Hurley's ability to drop the reader into the narrative, a story infused with gender and class issues, often gritty, and frequently dark.

This one did not disappoint.

Het boek dat ik aan het lezen ben ('Black Leopard, Red Wolf' van Marlon James) is geen lichte lectuur, en na ongeveer 60% was ik toe aan een korte break.

Kameron Hurley is een auteur met heel wat awards achter haar naam waarvan ik 'The Light Brigade' op mijn verlanglijstje staan heb en waarvan ik anders nog niets gelezen heb. Op haar website staan een aantal kortverhalen, samen met bijhorende 'realtime writing' en 'behind the scenes' video's. Het is boeiend om een stukje van haar schrijfproces te volgen, dan het kortverhaal te lezen, en dan te luisteren naar wat de auteur over het verhaal te vertellen heeft.

Het kortverhaal zelf is amusant en ontspannend, maar geen echte hoogvlieger. Het is een science-fiction-hard boiled detective-moordverhaal dat de noir clichés in een scifi omgeving plaatst zonder er veel aan toe te voegen en de plot is er één van dertien in een dozijn. Ideaal als ontspanning, en nu terug naar het serieuzere werk...

A short, gritty mystery story starring a surly about to be divorced detective. Its a scifi noir-inspired style story. I finished this one pretty quickly, it was a solid fun ride.
