I want to thank the author, Sophie Gabrielle, for contacting me and gifting me with a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

“There was blood on her hands that never dried. So many deaths she was losing count. What was more blood when she was up to her elbows in it? What was one more step, an inch deeper into the abyss? If she must lose herself to her revenge, then she was fine with it.”

Chaos Lies is a wonderfully dark and twisted story, filled with dread and desperation and cruelty at the same time that it deals with PTSD and trauma making the story tense and the atmosphere thick and weighted by the past.

While preparing for a war our four heroes must confront their dark pasts and realize that what they thought they knew is no more than the tip of the iceberg. At the same time that they'll have to navigate the murky and dark waters of politics and power games and strive to stay alive and find the precious freedom, they escaped to sought.

As the thrilling and darker continuation of Chaos Beckons this new installment gives a higher level of tension and darkness while also making us care and connect with the characters more.

“Are we the villains now?”

From beginning to end, Gabrielle gives us one heck of a ride filled to the brim with darkness and pain and an ever-increasing sense of alarm and despair that really put me on edge and made me dread every second of the reading. It was wonderful.

After the revelations and discoveries made in the previous book, I was expecting the world out of this new book and it did not disappoint in the least.

We were left on quite a high note, it's not easy to begin and immediately topple that, and while it may have not gotten to the same levels of chaos right from the beginning, not quite anyway, it was still exhilarating and just what I wanted to see right off the bat. It answered the most pungent question that had been running around my mind and made it in the most satisfactory way possible.

I really enjoyed that fact, how nothing was glossed over or touched on only basically, no, every action has an equal opposite reaction and this book exemplifies that quite perfectly. Aided in no small amount by a well-placed and used time jump.

“The black seed they had planted inside Nadia’s chest had taken root. No matter how many times she tried to cut out the memories, poison them, replace them, it was still there, nestled in her heart like a weed that would not die. She could not escape this growth inside her. The need for revenge. Her only option was to burn it all to the ground. Nothing would grow from the ash she would leave in her wake. The Seeds and Roots would be burnt away, nothing but a story. Xander had said stories had meaning. It was time Nadia rewrote her own.”

The discoursed that we had on trauma was so well developed and explored that I couldn't help but love every second of it.

Considering that we have more than one view on the subject we can explore more than one approach to dealing with it, with their correspondent different levels of success, which makes the whole discussion and exploration richer... and more difficult to see.

We can get to know so much of our characters by the way each of them decides to cope with all that their past entails. The demons that haunt them and the hardships that they experience and put themselves through speak volumes of their mental reality.

It is all explored, but one thing that needs to be noted is that this isn't an easy, pretty story - not so far anyway - and that means that any real progress and healing is not the focus of the story. The attempts, the desperate grab for sanity and respite, the struggle to reach the surface in an ever-crashing wave, all of the facts that can be very hard to swallow. All of which has its own merit to be explored and dealt with. After all, there cannot be true healing until the storm has passed.

This book just brought us deeper into the storm.

“For a moment, Venne could not speak. Framed against the dying light, Venne saw two girls. One dressed in blood, laughing and dancing in euphoria. Another, a faded version, yet somehow still burning as bright as a star. Tired and alone.”

Really, there's no other way to describe or think about this story other than cruel and twisted to its roots. After all, it is filled with gore and blood and visceral fury. With tattered sanity and violent deeds in the name of a better world. All in the hopes of a dream.

The characters really represent it so well. I already liked them very much but I was surprised by the way I ended up feeling towards some of them.

From the beginning of the first book I was most unimpressed by Emiil, not for any particular reason other than the fact I just didn't connect with him. Boy did that change through this book. I don't even believe it was anything too specific other than the fact that something seemed to click with me and his brave, selfless, tortured nature became one of my favorite aspects of this book.

Venne and Faith remain an aspect of these books that I really enjoy. They are both quite cruel and dark and playing a game that is too twisted to consider and I quite like them for it. Their dynamic, in specific, is a delight to read.

Dear Theo really is a ray of sunshine with dark clouds in the horizon that I loved from beginning to end. His time with Emiil was quite beyond perfect. If I had to complain about something it would be the fact that I don't feel we had enough time to explore his character.

For some reason, and really this doesn't happen very often to me, Nadia, who is the protagonist of the series, is the character that I like the least. Not to say that I don't like her, her terrible brand of blood lust, revenge, and madness are fun to read and explore more, but I always feel some kind of distance with her character. I liked her more in this book, however, than I did in the first one. Probably because of her time of respite in this book... her combination with Xander, their interactions and ideals, is quite interesting.

“We are free now. Let chaos quiver in our wake. For we have the power to do anything at all. Isn’t that wonderful?”

We have to also considered that this book is mostly character-driven rather than plot-driven. There is a plot, of course, and it is a highly entertaining and filled with great plot twists and world-building plot, but it is at no point the center of attention. Which is fine, if we want to be able to get to those plot-richer parts in an understandable way.

I mean, through this whole book there was a thick sense of rising dread that became quite cloying towards the end of the book that was only so effectively achieved by the heavy character development we got. And, really, when that dense atmosphere broke, it was such a shock and a heartbreak that it was almost unbearable.

Even through the slower, happier, and more hopeful parts of the book - that was quite necessary, really, to not go crazy with all the rest of the shadows - that feeling of anticipation of what is to come and uncertainty as to what it can be made everything more heightened and poignant.

“It’s what we choose now that matters. Not some lofty goal of the future where we’re free of being haunted. We will never be free of the past.”

There was no slow moment through the book. Not one. I devoured it from cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it. Every aspect of the story is so cared for and continually more fleshed out in a way that puts my heart at ease and content.

I love the twistedness of it all but, more than anything, I am fascinated by the lore this world is presenting me with. Simple and elegant, at the same time, that it becomes entangled it has that sense that it grows and feeds off itself that makes it more believable and shocking.

With all the things that we're discovering and have had hints of, especially with that cliffhanger that was perfection itself, I can't help but be sure that the story will continue to grow and shock me to no end. Become a world that I will not soon forget. As it is now.

“I am a god, I am a monster.”

... That was super intense and super dark. The perfect continuation to this twisted tale.

Honestly, that ending had me pulling my hair and at the edge of my seat at the same time that I was feeling very queasy, I love it for all the anxiety it gave me and it's still generating.

It was utterly satisfying and such a thrill to read. I devoured it all.

I never expected Sophie Gabrielle's Chaos Beckons, Book 1 of her Chaos Chronicles series, to impact me so deeply. And yet it did. It shattered me, made and unmade me, and left a profound imprint on my heart and soul. I felt like the story touched my very own soul, made me question, made me think about life experiences, past and future trauma and all the ways we as humans deal with it. I truly believe our responses are as numerous and diverse as our souls and minds are. Is there a "valid" response to a traumatic event?

Everything I loved in Chaos Beckons was deepened and expanded in its sequel, Chaos Lies. Chaos Lies managed to shatter me in new ways, ones I never thought possible, and I didn't mind the pain one bit. This time, I had emotional support from my reading buddy, Michelle. Together, we threaded the known and the unknown, explored the possibilities and all our unhinged theories and thoughts, and simply survived together.

Chaos Lies brought more action and even more twists and turns, more revelations and secrets uncovered, without losing the thing that makes the story so special—the emotions dripping from each and every page. Once again, we could almost feel in our bones the emotional and physical pain and struggles. We were transported into the deepest part of our characters' souls (yes, ours, because I see them as such), and we saw everything through their eyes. The inner demons, the wall built, everything.

Nadya, Emiil, Johanna, Venne—the family was there without being together. Separated, crumbled, and yet there. As Nadya and Johanna would say, could they know what love and family are, growing up like they did? I don't know, but I hope they will learn. Regardless of my feelings towards some of them, Xander, Theo, and Faith were all essential to the story.

What else is left to say? Another masterpiece, another part of the puzzle, and another emotionally charged sequence that will forever live within me. Thank you, Sophie, for sharing this world with us; I am forever grateful.

This was one hell of a rollercoaster ride! By the time I finished reading the book, my emotions were all over the place. Sophie Gabrielle promised us Chaos, and she delivered it outstandingly.

While the first book focused on the characters' escape and survival, this one had themes of revenge and retribution. One thing that remained common in both was their trauma. However, the way they processed it and reacted to it had changed. Their previous belief that they had to fight it all alone was now replaced with efforts to deal with it together as they gradually discovered that they could be a family.

I loved the development each character went through. It couldn't have been easy to write such contrasting characters, giving them a unique personality, mindset and the emotional bandwidth to deal with their issues, yet the author managed to do a fantastic job. The main characters as well as the supporting ones played a significant role in moving the story ahead.

While this was an amazing read, it wasn't an easy one. There was devastation and heartbreak of accepting certain truths and making difficult choices of letting something go after holding on to it for long. Every moment was so emotionally charged that I had to take time just to breathe through and calm myself before getting back to reading.

Johanna and Emiil have been my favourites since the first book, and I continued to love them in this one as well. I was super excited because I wanted something for Emiil, and it finally happened.

The conflicts, politics, power plays and changing dynamics kept me hooked. There were quite a few revelations, some major jaw-dropping ones. The book also hinted at certain secrets that I'm waiting to be revealed. At this point, everything is unpredictable and with that cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to jump into the 3rd book.

What also heightened the entire reading experience is that I did a buddy read with Ana. The in-depth discussions, sharing of emotions and exchange of "unhinged theories", as she calls it, were another level. I'm so grateful to her for initiating it.

This series deserves a lot more love and recognition. The brilliant writing, plot, characters and descriptive worldbuilding helped me experience the entire series. I wasn't merely reading it but feeling every moment.

I highly recommend this series to all the fantasy readers. Do not miss out on this gem. A big thank you to Sophie Gabrielle for creating this amazing world and sharing it with us readers.

EDIT 2024: Now re-edited with new covers! Link in bio.

OUT NOW!
Honestly this one was both the hardest thing to write, but also the most enjoyable. I stopped and started and rewrote this so many times. I had to take a lot of breaks for health reasons. However, the end result is something I am immensely proud of. This is the best thing I’ve ever written, if I do say so myself 🌝. I can’t really put into words how much this series means to me. Thank you so much to everyone who was has read the series and shown so much support over the last year. All I ever wanted was for someone to read my book and enjoy it. Now my dreams have come true. I’m so grateful to everyone in this community. I hope you enjoy this new instalment. Also don’t hate me for the ending, you should know by now I love a twist. 😈

I don’t think I’ve ever read a more in depth character driven story, Sophie Gabrielle is insanely gifted with bringing each individual to life!

Seriously, how often do you get to read an epic fantasy novel with the FMC who is unquestionably handicapped? And despite that, her indomitable spirit keeps her moving forward, no matter what.
This is something I was marvelling over repeatedly in this book. Nadia isn’t just a martyr and then a super cool badass for her actions in the first novel. She’s a deeply hurt young woman, who genuinely struggles with he consequences of major bodily harm.
And we never shy away from the real effects! I love how realistic that was, the pain and different understandings and how someone would attempt to recover and gain new balance in a world where they have fundamentally changed. It’s something that can be explored on so many levels and Gabrielle barrels headfirst into it, with expertise.

This story is always moving, and while it is highly focused on each of our 3 main characters, it still propels their individual growths through several major new developments in Arthai city and the surrounding kingdom. Action, violence, schemes, twisted relationships, budding honesty, gods and more. I always was ready to read the next chapter, even the interludes during the peak of tension were a clever and welcome flashback.

I feel like this series has become mine now. I know these characters, I know this world, and I’m desperate to find out how that bloody plot twist in the end is carried out!

Chaos Lies (The Chaos Chronicles book 2) by Sophie Gabrielle ✨

This was another belated ARC read for me, and I enjoyed it even more than the first installment! 🤓
Chaos Lies is packed with twists, betrayal, and messy romance, which kept me hooked from start to finish.

So much happened in this book - violence, revenge, and cruelty shape the characters’ journeys, while magic, mystery , and layers of secrets and lies add depth and intrigue. The world’s twisted rules and oppressive control make it hard to know who (or what) to trust, leading to plenty of conflicting emotions for the main characters. I especially loved the character growth and how relationships continued to evolve in unexpected ways.

Excited to see where the chaos leads next! ⚔️ 🌀 💔 ☄️ ✨

I’d rate this around 4⭐️’s

Continuing my journey through the Chaos Chronicles series has me excited for the second. After loving every part of Chaos Beckons, from the characters to the rich lore and world-building, to the unique narrative that subverts the usual tropes and trappings of the genre, Chaos Lies had a lot to live up to. The self-proclaimed "high point" of the series by the author simply doesn't do justice to the quality of this book.

Chaos Beckon was a fantastic introduction to this world, and Chaos Lies only elevates every aspect of what made the first book so good. With all the pieces in place, Sophie Gabrielle was able to hone her craft and push the weaving lives of these characters to greater heights; creating a more tense and mature story that had me eager to read more. From the very first page, you're thrown straight into the action, and tension only continues to build through twists, turns, love, and lust. With a more expansive world and established cast, the occasional lulls in pacing from the first book have addressed in a tighter story that takes place over a shorter period of time, which allows for more focus on drama and character conflict to drive the story forward.

While slightly shorter than the first book, the narrative felt more tich and dense, showing Sophie's improvements between her first two releases. In every single aspect, this book builds upon it's predecessor and takes the readers on a mature and unexpected journey, all while trusting them to enjoy the ride. I was already pulled in and onboard after the first book, but now I'm desperate for what awaits me in Book 3.

I also wanted to give a special mention to the increased LGBTQ+ representation, which draws from multiple spectrums, as well as the experiences depicting those with limb loss. Seeing their stories told in such a respectful and considered manner was a highlight that built upon the threads established in Book 1

*Disclaimer: The author is my partner, but she wrote and published this book before we first met. In 2024, upon completion of the third book of this series, I helped her to release the 2nd edition of the first two books by redesigning the covers and assisting with the work needed for the paperback release. I asked to borrow the sample paperback copies to read of my own volition and had no creative input on the contents of the books themselves. These views are my own and represent my 100% honest opinions, which have been kept private from the author prior to this review.*

The Chaos Chronicles by Sophie Gabrielle just gets better as the series goes on. Book two, Chaos Lies, was fantastic, a tale of adventure and surprise.

Sophie Gabrielle writes a daring romantasy full of love, found family, evil, and revenge. In the first book, Chaos Beckons, the main characters escape a terrible village where they lived all their lives. They learn there is more to the world than what was within the village walls. After having left the torture and hatred they endured in their village, they realize they have to return.

Chaos Lies is about the group overcoming their different feelings about returning to their old home, helping the New Kingdom of which they've become a part, as well as gaining closure for themselves. Going back is their only option.

The Chaos Chronicles is just that - chaos, but in the best way possible for a story.

I just cannot get enough of this wonderful series which keeps getting even more powerful with each book, so much so that I only stopped reading when it ended and realised it was 2am. The attack by the goddess or as she has been declared by Princess Faith, the imposter Laastra is over however the anger at what was done, and the fear that the attacks would continue led Faith and the seeds to a decision. They heard that Laastra was going to the villages and taking the seeds to get herself an army, so they knew that whatever the cost they had to return to their village. The same one they had escaped from just 2 years hence. They all feared returning to the nightmares they had dreamt of leaving behind for good in their bid for freedom. Venne wanted to return to seek revenge on the elders, Nadia wanted retribution, Johanna just wanted to put her sister to rest, whilst Emiil just wanted peace. He, the protector was the most distraught by the idea of returning, being the only one who wanted to just leave well alone. Once they found the village things got out of hand, many lives were lost, and the seeds realised that they were just political pawns being used by Faith and Xander, and that their previous eighteen years were just one big massive lie which almost broke them all asunder. Upon returning to the city nothing was as it had been, the found families were threatened, Venne and Nadia severed their bond or what was left of it, whilst Emiil just had to escape the prison he felt was closing down on him, even though he had found love at last. I loved this book very much, it is so full of deeply felt emotions, really appreciate that Ms. Gabrielle gave us a beautiful budding romance between a gay couple, and loved the intriguing ending which made me start reading book 3 immediately as I could not believe what I was reading.
