Alyvia is not looking for adventure. Most days, she’s too busy managing a bustling tavern to think about anything but closing time. But when a dangerous patron lets the wrong word slip in her presence, her workday takes a turn for the perilous.
The loose-lipped patron is a powerful mage who will do anything to prevent her from interfering with his scheme. When the mage and his apprentice kidnap Alyvia, she discovers their plot may jeopardize the entire country’s safety.
Can she escape before her captors silence her for good? And will she be in time to thwart their plans and prevent a war?
A curious short story of magic and intrigue! When a bar lady overhears a man practising dangerous magic, she finds herself caught up in something with far bigger implications than just a little illicit spellcraft...
A well-written and fast paced little stand alone story, this one oozes mystery. I adored the creative magic system that we just get the barest glimpse of. While I'm not a fan of third person present tense, the writing flows smoothly. A little more physical description to really elaborate on the kind of fantasy world it is and the characters would be nice, but for a short page count teaser it doesn't disappoint.

a tense little short story I got as part of a promo with the author's other work. It has that blend of fun absurdity and serious business, the mundane and the magical, that is just *chefs kiss* to me. Even though it's short, the world feels lived-in and the magic is tantalizingly mysterious. It's about a likable, quick-witted bar-owner who overhears a patron talking about dark magic, and gets tangled up in a plot that requires cleverness and practicality to solve (my favorite type of heroine!) It reminded me of the Enchanted Forest series by Patricia Wrede, which I read as a kid.
