Superb!

The Wolf we all have known and enjoyed is back! Yeah, he’s still a Sheriff and still a lousy one at it, but he’s in his “detective mode” so the lousy sheriff gig should be forgotten. Lots of little sub-plots come and go in this read, but it’s Wolf on top of his game. Great read. Thanks Jeff!

Jeff Carson’s In the Ground is the 14th book in the David Wolf mystery thriller series and I have to tell you that I came into this series with this book and that was a problem for me. Both going into this story and coming out of this story there are a whole lot of connections to other episodes both in the past and to come in the future. There were lot of people who were only connected to this particular story because the protagonist knew them. I didn’t know them, and I wondered who they were and why they were there.

It’s a fascinating thing about characters in a series. Some authors manage to get the books to stand clearly on their own pages. Paul Doiron does that. Patrick O’Brien, Dudley Pope, and Dewey Lamdin do that in their sea stories. Elizabeth George does it well with Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley. Some authors don’t write their books in sequence but use the same characters like Agatha Christie with Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.

But it is a challenge to write the books in series, having the character age as the pages and books turn, with the risk that a new reader (like me in this case) is going to walk into the middle of it. My wife has a big family, and the first time I walked into the room and they all looked at me, I knew that I was never going to remember who they all were and how they were connected. But that was okay, because I knew that I was going to have time to get to know them. They were family and that was a reason to care.

It takes a powerful writer to rope a new reader so tightly into a group like that and keep their interest. All the characters have to be memorable. All the characters have to be interesting. The risk is that all those characters are in the author’s head, and they may be in the heads of faithful readers as well, but as a newbie to this series, it didn’t work for me. And looking through the reviews on Goodreads, Jeff Carson certainly has a lot of loyal fans.

It’s a good story. Wolf is the sheriff of a county in Colorado and he gets called into a murder scene when a body appears on the top of a gigantic machine in a mining operation. Wolf has all sorts of issues with his job and the people around him, while he tries to sort out who did the deed and why. In the process, another body shows up. Added to the mix is a female deputy that Sheriff Wolf finds attractive despite some disparity in their ages.

I wouldn’t call this a ‘thriller’ in the ilk of Robert Ludlum, David Baldacci, or Ian Fleming. The scenery is great and the main characters do have substance, but I felt that the plot line took a back seat to the ongoing story of the characters. As in all good mystery stories, the why drives the who. In this story, Using a maze of clues in following the how, Carson does a good job of burying the why until close to the end in an explosion of revelation and gunfire.

Carson’s writing is solid and the editing is good. This might be a story line that would be worth turning back, and following from the beginning - and I'm sure that many of his fans here on Goodreads would encourage that.

The latest David Wolf novel from Jeff Carson. Carson has created an interesting character in David Wolf with strong supporting characters, particularly in Heather Patterson, the rising star detective in the County office. This story introduces a new female character who is prominent in the story and likely will be involved in future stories with Wolf.

The discovery of a body at a small gold mine near the town of Dredge in the northern part of the county in Colorado obviously draws the attention of the county sheriff (Wolf) and his deputies and detectives. The town of Dredge is patrolled by Piper Cain, a woman of experience from Montana but stationed in the outlining town rather than the main office in Rocky Points.

The victim is discovered when a load of dirt is dumped onto the top of the wash machine that washes and filters the gold (hopefully) from the dirt. The victim is one of the workers at the mine (only four men working the mine at the time). The man has died by a gun shot up through his chin and out the top of his head. Sounds like a suicide but how did a dead man end up buried in the dirt pile? There are suspects, of course. Then, when the girl friend of the man is found dead with the same gun shot, it leads to more questions, more unanswered questions.

Carson spins a good story and all set in the mountains of Colorado. He provides good descriptions of life there, the grandeur of the scenes and the harshness of life there. All his stories provide action, detective work, and the interpersonal relationships that you would expect. I have enjoyed all his books.

Changes in the SBSD Amidst a Double-homicide

Always entertaining, Jeff Carson scores again with his latest in the David Wolf series. Wolf, fatigued of his role as the interim sheriff for Sluice- Barron counties works a a double murder first exposed by a group of gold-miners nearby Dredge, a town in his jurisdiction. While he is working on the case, his protege, Heather Patterson, formally the Chief of Detectives ( Wolf's former position) is doing the hard-working of the actual running of the Sluice-Baron Sheriff's Department- with a broken wrist and sprained ankle. Wolf also comes into contact with Piper Cain, a woman who is serving as a member of the SBSD auxiliary in Dredge. Wolf works the case, along with his fellow deputies who've previously played roles in the series, but with the addition of Piper, who also looks to be a potent romantic interest. In the course of solving the murders, Piper is put in serious jeopardy. However, Wolf solves the case and saves Piper. In addition, the future of the department comes into play as former sheriff McClain announces he will not be returning to the department in his remission from cancer. This leaves the question of who will become sheriff, a role Wolf despises, and really is not in tuned to his talents as an investigator. The person stepping up may be a surprise to any who have not read the entire series, but at the ending of the book the future of the department looks to be in good hands.

Wonderful series

I just finished book 14, currently the last book in the series. I binge read series like others do Netflix shows and the David Wolf series is one of the more worthy ones I’ve come across. If you are a fan of the Robert B Parker novels or the Longmire series you will thoroughly enjoy this series too. A modern day western, the sheriff is the good but flawed man who does the right thing even if it might cost him his job, his woman, or his finger (R.I.P pinky). The author did a good job of drawing me into into the story so that I forgot there was someone controlling the whole plot. There was one plot line that I right out loud said “you dumbass” and I was completely talking to Wolf. At a couple of climactic scenes since I will sarcastically ask Wolf if he wouldn’t perhaps like to stop for breakfast first. Read them and then see if you too don’t want to smack Wolf upside the head for that one. Jeff Carson has created a great character and community of characters that keep you reading past your bedtime. Highly recommended.

Another Satisfying Story
This series has me consumed by the characters, especially the enigmatic and troubled David Wolf. Between the wonderfully diverse and engrossing cast and the intense storylines, I'm always excited to start a new audiobook in this series.

This, the 14th(!) book featuring David Wolf, is a quintessential read. Wolf is struggling with the political side of his position as Interim Sheriff, he's got a crazy mystery with more questions than answers, he's working too many hours, and "Hey... who's this deputy? Have I met her before?" All the classics rolled into one great thriller.

If you're new to this series, go ahead and jump in anywhere. Each novel can be read as a standalone. Then, when you discover how awesome this series is, go back and get the history of this striking lawman and his troubled past.

A group of guys digging for gold wake up one morning to discover one of their own in the pile of dirt they are sifting. Setup to look like a suicide or murder, Wolf and his team get to work to discover the truth. Wolf immediately starts to question the team of diggers and noticing something is "off" but no evidence pointing there way. Meanwhile, a local, recently released from prison, with quite a temper is arrested for the murder.

A new character emerges as the investigation takes them to a remote satellite office, Piper Cain, and immediate you can tell Wolf is smitten! Some personal storylines come into play with Piper and her father and when Piper is taken by the real killers, things get serious for Wolf!

Of Course in the end, Wolf knew all along who the real killer was and was finally able to uncover the evidence and truth!

The gang's all here. Wolf is serving as interim sheriff as his boss is off dealing with pancreatic cancer. Patterson is filling in for Wolf as chief detective.
They get a call about a body found on the premises of a surface gold mining operation, definitely murdered. Then the victim's girlfriend is murdered in the same way.
So there's a murder investigation, an attractive new deputy, Patterson on crutches and Wolf overwhelmed by the paperwork now involved in the sheriff's job hoping the sheriff returns soon to bail him out.
Jeff Carson has a way of writing that draws the reader in trying to anticipate what might come next

David Wolf

I have enjoyed all David Wolf novels(14). It is very unusual for me to read repeated series of the same characters. Your main characters are all unique. I am happy you promoted Patterson, she is very worthy. The one thing that puzzels me through all 14 books is now you present the town of Rocky Flats. One minute I want to live there, the next I don't want to get within 500 miles. Keep up the good reads. Will there be a 15 th David Wolf? By the way my name is Steve.Thought I would mention this as my wife bought this for me and her name is on this Kindle. Thank you STEVE O

Fast entertaining read. Love the series

I've read all the books in this series and every one has been an enjoyable read. The plots are interesting, the characters are people you care about, and it never takes itself too seriously. I like that the characters are flawed human beings that have their weaknesses and not superhero like abilities. They seem like real people, if only a little luckier than most when it comes to escaping death. Highly recommend for anyone who likes a bit of mystery, humor and human drama in a setting that is realistically described and makes you wish you were there to see it for yourself.

This is the first in this series that I didn’t give 5 stars. It’s not that this book was the worst. I just feeling like it was long overdue for me to dock a star for often repeated phrases like the “flowery fragrance” of women. Does every woman in Colorado smell like flowers? I’ve been there and I can’t recall what, if any, perfume I wore. It was just as likely to be fruity as flowery. Also, every time a man exits a car does he stretch his hands over his head? Seems like it here. I guess there’s more I could complain about but I’ll leave it at that. Overall I’m enjoying this series. Just those repeated lines tend to knock me out of the story.

Another Fabulous Detective Wolf Adventure

A mining expedition is ongoing in the town of Dredge, just a few miles from Rocky Points. 4 miners, 1 ends up dead. Sheriff Wolf and his Detectives go to investigate, and meet the attractive Deputy Piper Cain. Investigating this death, which looked like a suicide, or a very terrible homicide, the Detectives and Wolf have to piece together the whodunit? Was it an outsider, the man fooling around with the deceased girlfriend, was it one on the other miners? When Deputy Piper joins in to assist in the investigation, she finds herself "In The Ground" because, Dead folks tell no tales.

I love the David Wolf series and have read them all. So whenever I pick up the newest, it is like returning to visit old friends. So when In the Ground came out, I couldn't wait to get to book 14. And...I enjoyed it, but sadly, not nearly as much as the others. The plot was far from riveting and read somewhat like any other nameless who-doneit off a factory line. Even the familiar characters lacked depth and even the new girl on the block did not have much to offer. If you are new to this series, this is definitely not the one to start off with. 2.5 stars.

New beginnings

This one has David Wolf counting down the days until the sheriff gets back so he can go back to being just a detective. A dead body in a mining operation has the Sluice-Byron County sheriff's office trying to find a motive and a killer. Friendships go way back within the mining operation. A new Deputy in a satellite branch catches Wolf's interest as Piper is intelligent as well as beautiful. She is taking care of her father who had Alzheimer's to add to the mix. Wolf has to figure it out with help from Heather Patterson and Rachette.

Great Series, you’ll enjoy the writing, setting and characters!

Wonderful to slip back into the characters and their lives as they solve the case! Great to see the evolution and development of the characters roles. No spoilers on this review other to say I was pleased to see a “more true to nature,” migration in the characters roles to what I’m sure will be more interesting future reading of the David Wolf stories! Great stories, great writing, great characters and great settings, what more can a cozy read provide!

The series is the best!!

I came across the series recently and after the first book I was hooked! I ended up bingeing and read every one and was disappointed to finish as I didn't want it to be done with number14. David Wolf is a very believable hero and Jeff Carson takes you through so.many twists and turns you never figure it out until the very end. His story telling is excellent and that is an understatement.
I highly recommend this series to everyone who enjoys a good hero and a story that you hate to finish with each book

I read seven (7) books in the David Wolf series this month. I'm sad that I completed book number 14, but happy more will surely follow. Each book was fun and very interesting and better than the last. I would be thrilled to read the next 14 books to keep the series going.
I want to see David happy and married again. Want more from more of the Sheriffs Department; staff. Glad that Patterson made the move up. I knew it had to go this way for Wot to be happier. Jeff Carson please continue with this series.

I love David Wolf!

I have been binge reading the David Wolf series, one after the other, after the other, since I discovered this series. I have enjoyed not only the plots of the books, but also the way Jeff Carson has fleshed out his characters. In my mind's eye, I can clearly see these characters. It is as though they are people of my community. People I would feel very comfortable with, and want as my friends.

If you are reading this series for the first time, relax and enjoy the ride. A lot of enjoyable reading awaits you.

Very exciting entry in the David Wolf series. But most of the book did not show the the best side of Colorado... it was gloomy, raining, sad history of gold mining, murder, child abuse, dementia, mental illness.....but also a great new character was introduced, Deputy Piper Cain. Wolf is still the Sherrif, a job for which he is woefully incompetent and he knows it. Fortunately he gets bailed out by very competent underlings so he can do the job he was born for, solving crimes. And in the end the sun shines again in the beautiful Rockies.

A New Beginning

I started reading the David Wolfe series quite by accident. This has turned out to be a great accident. I have read every book of Jeff Carson's David Wolfe series. I have enjoyed a single book in this series. The character David Wolfe is a solid down to earth man. He is funny at times, yet very serious about his family, his job and the loves of his life. There has not be a lot, however, he loves with his whole heart. If you have not read this series pick up the free short story. You will truely be glad you did.

Interesting characters and their stories

David Wolf is now sheriff and of course the new beauty that shows up to be be his new love interest is a deputy, so dating co workers is a no no even in these times. The long time literary rule is that no one can marry the the starship captain; will they die or leave?
Other possible career changes are discussed. Winter weather difficulties and beautiful Colorado scenery are described in beautiful detail. Most minor of all, there are some murders to be solved.

I have liked the David Wolf series since the first one - Foreign Deceit.

The rural Wyoming setting away from the big city, weather being a minor character, and the interplay between a large cast of characters make and keep these books fresh.

Except for a minor slip a few books ago, the stories have all been very good. In the Ground is even better. It’s been a while since I read a book that really had me wanting to turn pages.

Keep them coming Mr. Carson. I’ll keep reading.

I didn't realize how much I missed the crew of characters until I began reading. The great thing about this series is that the characters actually age over time and have to deal with family and health issues as well as professional development, divorce, death, love and the rest of the enchilada of life. This book had an interesting plot and I admit I read the book over doing household chores. Can't wait for the next book to find out how the Wolf/Cain romance develops. Good stuff.

When a miner is found dead and discovered that he was shot, David and his deputies begin the investigation. A new deputy is in a town close by, but still under David's jurisdiction. When the man's girlfriend is found dead and also died the same way as the miner, fingers point to the man she was also seeing. Other little matters also enter into the story. As the get close to the killer, they find they need to rescue one of their own. Good story.

Just a GREAT READ!

With the Pandemic in full force, I had wandered away from my regular reading habit. Naturally, when Jeff let me know that a new Wolf book was out, I immediately downloaded and slowly started to read. I just barely put the book down as I realized why I loved reading so much-with a little imagination and a good book you can be anyone, be anywhere and the time stands still! Thanks for re-starting my habit, Jeff.

You will be hooked

My husband and I have read all 14 Dave Wolf novels. The first one hooked us. It is impossible to say which of the 14 we like the best. Each character is well developed in their role surrounding an honest man who just wants to do the right thing in his job and in his personal life that seems to get intertwined sometimes tragically. We highly recommend starting with the first Dave Wolf and keep right on enjoying up to this latest novel.

I have really enjoyed this series - felt sad when I finished In The Ground because it will be a while before there is a next one. Initially, I found the series to be a little macho with a lot of violence, but as the series matured I have come to enjoy the various characters and their life experiences. In The Ground started a bit slower than the previous books, but the plot was well done and kept you guessing until the end.
