Working for Emperor Nero has never been the easiest of jobs at the best of times for palace secretary, Epaphroditus. However, his day is further complicated when the emperor's favourite eunuch, Sporus is kidnapped. Keen to avoid Imperial displeasure Epaphroditus must hunt down the missing Sporus with the aid of psychopathic slave overseer, Straton who may be more of a murderous hinderance than a help. Determined to thwart this eunuch retrieval mission is Praetorian Prefect, Nymphidius Sabinus who has sworn to bring Epaphroditus crashing down. Clearly only one man can triumph in this deadly rivalry. But who will be the one to solve the mystery of the missing eunuch?
L.J. Trafford studied Ancient History at the University of Reading after which she took a job as a Tour Guide in the Lake District. Moving to London in 2000 she began writing ‘The Four Emperors’ series. The series comprises four books – Palatine, Galba’s Men, Otho’s Regret and Vitellius’ Feast – which cover the dramatic fall of Nero and the chaotic year of the four emperors that followed. Palatine, published in 2015, received an Editor’s Choice Mark from the Historical Novel Society. Her first book for Pen and Sword, How to Survive in Ancient Rome was published in October 2020. Sex and Sexuality in Ancient Rome was published in 2021
Hilarious. It is so good to visit with these delightful characters again. Trafford's previous works about Rome under Nero and his successors have my vote as the best historical novels ever written. Sporus, the eunuch of this story, is an inspiration for all writers of how to create a memorable addition to your storyline. A series of madcap adventures, filled with palace intrigue. A crazy Emperor, and several factions all jockeying for position.
A hilarious and charming foray into Trafford’s wacky Rome. Well done once again! I’m glad that I read this! Once again, while I know it’s a short story, it was far too short! :)
