Welcome to the New York Shade!

We've got the stuff made out of dreams in this little slice of Hell on Earth. We've also got the stuff made out of nightmares.

My name is Sin Montero--hellbeast mercenary, professional liar, and your guide.

Supernaturals are free to be who they are in the Shade. That's the point of its existence--just not for me. I've spent my whole life lying about what I am, until it all comes crashing down on me with a single bite. Turns out, my blood can't tell lies, not to a vampire.

Damian Reed is achingly beautiful the way a lion is breathtaking--right until he rips your throat out. He claims my baby brother is in trouble, and if I don't help him find what he's looking for, he's going to turn me in to the authorities.

Now that's a big problem for me. You see, if the Sacri Guild caught wind of what I truly am, they would kill me without hesitation. And if I do what Damian Reed asks, there's a good chance I'll die in the process.

So many great options, right?

But here's a little secret: I'm not as helpless as I let people think. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve, and a crazy familiar who may or may not really be a squirrel. My brother's life is on the line so I'll take my chances with the vampire. Let's just hope I survive him with my head--and my heart--intact.

Problematic

This book is rife with problems. First, the homophones. “Peak” is a different word with a different meaning than the work “peek”. Whenever authors misuses words, I feel like it chips away at the collective intelligence of humanity.

Second, when an author is trying to create an AU, it’s important to form sentences correctly. Thus, writing that a mystical creature has orbs of molten silver, it reads less like an eye-colour and more like they have pools of liquid silver in lieu of eyes. Also, it leaves a lot to be desired when a “hell beast” is described as a 4’ tall hedgehog. Or that the female protagonist’s “familiar” is a red squirrel. It makes me think the author is obsessed with rodents.

Finally, and most importantly, the male protagonist has his team capture the female protagonist and hold her against her will before he physically assaults her in order to mentally rape her. He is then so turned on by the assault that he has sex fantasies about actually raping her. If that weren’t enough, he then hunts her down and enslaves her, blackmailing her by holding the life of her younger brother over her head. I cannot possibly fathom what would make any of his behaviour acceptable and the author’s assertion that he’s physically attractive does not cut it. I can just imagine the two of them at a dinner with friends explaining how they met. “While he was attacking me, I couldn’t help but notice that he was cute!” “Raping her mind just wasn’t enough for me; I wanted to rape her body and soul, too!”

It took me a while to write this review, first because I didn't really know how to rate it, then because I forgot about it.

Reading the summary again took me back though. Back to that pretty fantastic world, that got me to keep on reading even though I was sometimes a bit lost and not really understanding the main character's choices, or the plot, really. I found the world building quite great, actually, and once I finished I wanted to discover more about it. The plot though felt all over the place, and some stuff didn't quite make sense to me. From my point of view, it lacks some logic and direction.

On another note, I must say the different characters are interesting as well, and kept me reading this novel. They're not unidimensional, and I appreciate that, even if I feel we mostly see and get to know Sin, and not the rest of them. I also liked most of the relationships mentioned in the book, particularly friendships.

The romance though... Well, I love romance, you gotta know that, and I believe it's part of what gets me keep on reading in a lot of the books. But here, it's lust, pure and simple, and it gets confused with love a lot, which bothers me. I feel like it escalated way too quickly and it didn't feel realistic to me.
The ending is also quite frustrating in that it stops really abruptly. It felt a bit sloppy.

Overall, it was still a pretty pleasant read, and the world-building plus the characters make it interesting enough to give it a shot if you're looking for something new.

Overall: 4/5

Plot and themes: 4/5

Characters: 4/5

Writing style: 3/5

Attention-grabbing: 4/5

Magic Thief is the first book in the New York Shade series. Sin has been trying to live under the radar since she faked her magic for her Guild test when she was ten. If they knew what she really was, she would have been killed then and now. Now, a vampire is threatening to expose her and her brother if she doesn't find an amulet for him. They make an unlikely team but they're both determined to release themselves from their respective cages.

I was very close to just putting it down and DNFing because it wasn't super interesting at the beginning. I think it really balanced itself out though and made for a great introduction. I love when there are powers like hers because I'm a huge fan of the overpowered female protagonist and her powers are definitely OP. I also very much appreciate how Damian completely acknowledges this and just goes on his way.

So it was a great start. Not much to say about a book when there aren't major issues. Though I would appreciate if we got a little more depth on everyone involved. I think later it'll feel a lot more solid as a book series and hopefully a lot more exciting.

I think this book was recommended by Amazon based on my reading habits. I'm glad it was. I read through all four books back to back.

I'll be the first to admit that for a few pages, I was expecting the book to be 'just okay'. Pretty quickly after that I was caught up and didn't want to put it down. I really liked the world building, the idea of the Shade being a 'living' entity. Sin and her friends were great. There was romantic tension. There were personal tensions. This book was really balanced and fun to read.

The Uprising

Honestly I wavered on whether this was a 3 star or a 4 star for me, but decided on 4 because it was a fun read and I enjoyed it. I really like the whole idea of a supernatural who is hiding in place from other supernaturals for simply being who she was born to be. Honestly I like the whole world building aspect of the plot, how children are tested when they are young to measure what kind of magic they have and how powerful. If these kids have one of the darkling Talents that the guild (governing body) disapproved of or deems dangerous then they are either killed or nulled (Talent removed or made inaccessible). It seems like a brutal idea, and it really does seem like one of those situations where one group decided they are superior in some way and then look down on the other, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Sin as a character is great. I kind of love how she is so fierce about her younger brother. From the very beginning we find out that her brother is missing and he is accused of some kind of crime. And Sin doesn’t hesitate, she is ready to do anything for her brother and to find him. It seems like she has been taking care of him for a while now. Of course during this time period Damien the super powerful vampire figures out what she is and now she is on the cusp of her life changing forever.
I really liked Sin and Damien a lot together, I liked how Damien kind of deferred to her wishes a lot, and I liked that he was willing to do whatever it took to help her get Sonny back, even if that meant not completing his job. But then wham! Something upset the balance, and he doesn’t trust Sin anymore, doesn’t matter that the thing he is upset about never happened, he is still upset and Sin is out the door, trash, nothing to him anymore. And even at the end he is still ridiculous about it, all “she still hasn’t apologized”, you know for not doing the thing is mad about. Needless to say Damien has some redeeming to do in my eyes for the second book.

I loved this book! Sin is a dynamic fanatic character & Damian is the anti-hero we didn't know we needed!

The entire cast of characters bring something fun and perfect to the story ... give me more please.

Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review
Actual rating: 3.75 stars

I would say this was in the upper tier of paranormal/urban fantasy stuff I've read recently. The world is interesting and well-detailed without being too exposition-heavy (though there are a few sections where it does feel a bit much). The idea of the Shades, basically living, sentient little worlds, was super neat, and I'm interested to see it expanded upon. I liked the magic systems and the societies set up, as well as the exploration of the inherent imbalances and unfairness in the system. Sin was a good character to follow - she was tough without being the stereotypical "Strong Female Character" archetype that's so common among stories like this. She has a heart, she has people she cares about, and her butt-kicking is believable thanks to her magical abilities.

My big gripe is the romance, though. As soon as the main characters meet, they are overflowing with lust for each other, and they keep stumbling into cheesy situations that lean into it (like the whole tub-travel sequence, where they oh-so-conveniently have to strip in front of each other and get soaking wet. It makes sense in context, but barely). I wasn't really attached to Damian as a character, he was a bit too much of a jerk towards regular people for me to really care about him, and him developing feelings for the MC beyond lust didn't seem believable. The ending - namely the big miscommunication/betrayal scene - really irritated me, too. Sin literally says "I can explain" three times in a row, and then does absolutely no explaining before another character brings the conversation to an abrupt halt. Damian doesn't even swoop in during the climax to help out or anything, he's completely out of the story. The very tail end of the novel does hint towards possible reconciliation, but it still felt unfinished and sloppy.

Overall, though, if you like the genre, you'll enjoy this. It put some new twists on old territory, was generally well-written, and I imagine some people will find the romance more tolerable than I.

Sin Montera is a mercenary, she hunts hell beasts, and she lives in an area of Manhattan known as the Shade which is hidden from all but the Supernaturals who call it home. When her younger brother disappears, she will do nearly anything to find him. Even if it means working with Damian Reed, a vampire who is hundreds of years old, very powerful, and works for the Sacri Guild. If she helps him find the object he is looking for he will keep the Guild from questioning her brother, and keep a secret that could get her killed if the Guild found out. Fortunately, Sin has made a point of making sure everyone underestimates her, she is much stronger than she leads others to believe, so she agrees to work with Damian.

Absolutely fascinating characters that are well written, and compelling. I thought their interactions were pretty realistic. Sin and Damian start out unwilling to trust each, but soon discover that they are drawn to each other in a much more personal way.

I was mesmerized by Sin's world and the Shade where she lives an works. There is exciting action, battles using magic, and other weapons. The plot of this book has plenty of surprising as well as unexpected twists that kept me reading way past bed time. Needless to say, I thought this was a fantastic book.

Sinea is working as a mercenary for the Hellbeast Affairs in order to help her brother's future. Sinea is turning in one of her catches when she is approached by two Guild Officers. They are looking for her brother, she doesn't want to give them any information. Sinea is introduced to the man she wanted, he is known as Damian

Sinea doesn't want to be anywhere near them, she has a big secret that she is keeping. Sinea is going to find her brother and move away. When Damian realizes what she is, he makes her a deal, she has no choice but to make.
Sinea, Damian and his team will work to find her brother, get what Damian wants. They find out this goes deeper than they thought. Sinea will put her life on the line for those she cares about.

This a great first book in series. You have a young girl that is to kept her secret, she will do everything to save her brother from the mess he is in. Sinea and Damian's dynamic adds to the story, they have a great push/pull. This book has something something for everyone will enjoy. There are so many different cast of characters. I could not stop reading until I got to the end, that ending will get you. I can't wait to see where the characters are in the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Entertaining read-

Sin is a bounty hunter of monstrous creatures in a magical community that has a pet squirrel, Kit, as a sidekick. Her brother, Sonny, gets in over his head by involving himself with a group of people that proclaim they are seeking equal rights for a subset of members in the magical community. To keep Sonny under their control, the rebel group frames Sonny for a crime and takes him to remote location he can not escape.

Damien is the bogey man of the magical community. At the end of his contract with his employer, he is anxious to start the next phase of his life...if he can complete this final task. Sin nor Damien are what the other expects and getting to know one another leads to a connection, while trying to reach a common goal.

While the ending pleasantly surprised me, it was after a plot twist that made it hard for me to continue. I thought the main character was going down the same formulaic betrayal to save another life, but thankfully there was a twist. Overall, I thought the the book an entertaining read. There are some elements of the plot that need to be built on to better explain the rebellion, but those may come with future books in what seems to be the beginning of a series. A good diversion for a weekend.

⚖️⚖️ONE PHENOMENAL DELIGHT⚖️⚖️
Holy hellion! Hoxa just dialed my number, rang my bell and blew my world off its axis, serving up one scrumptious, delectably delicious deep dish delight, keeping you riveted on a razors edge and frozen to your seat, launching this jewel to staggering heights. One action packed hard hitting heart pounding pulse racing nailbiting block busting bombshell hooking you from the start and reeling you in for the duration, wrapping this baby up sleek shiny and tight. Dragged through a minefield full of daring drama, churning turmoil, perilous intrigue, damning secrets, escalating danger, spiraling suspense and unnerving encounters, along with a boatload of revelations, putting our characters through their pacing, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. The characters, banter, interactions and charged atmosphere are realistic, complex and genuine with traits and qualities, add depth and diversity, blending into charismatic personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating one vivid backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Hoxa, thanks for sharing this thrilling treat with us.

….Meh

I thought this book was okay. I was intrigued with the premise, but the execution left something to be desired. I don’t know if I can even pinpoint what, exactly, made this book so mediocre…but I’ll try.

I don’t really like the way Sin and Damien interact. They fluctuate between lust and suspicion, like and dislike, trust and betrayal constantly. I like the idea of them together, put I don’t like the way it was written. If only…they had so much potential.

I don’t like Damien’s team, they are all assholes. I don’t like Moira at all. I seriously don’t know why anyone likes her. She was even a bitch to Damien. There isn’t even one point In the entire book where she wasn’t being mean. Damien’s two vampire side-kicks didn’t have any personality at all, they were just THERE. They were basically just around for backup and to be silently pissed off about stuff. Same goes for the werewolf, but he spoke a couple more times then the vampires did.

Anyway, I’m not going to continue this series. From the reviews I’ve read, the issues I’ve mentioned above just continue. I’m not interested in the plot enough to deal with Sin and Damiens love/hate relationship throughout the entire series. I’d have liked if Sin was a bit more badass too.

An excellent read
**no spoilers**
Sinea Montero is a Sacri sorceress with a few major secrets. Damien Reed is a hundred+ year old vampire tied to the Guild for reasons unknown to most. They cross paths when Sinea’s brother Sonny vanished. Damien needs to find him fast. For a very good reason.

All is not easy because Sonny’s got himself into a very volatile situation. Sinea loves her brother very much and will do nearly anything to find him....does she?

The story takes place in both the Shade and the world of Manhattan. I write that as if the Shade is a true place. Yup, sucked me in so much I refer to it as if it was a real location. The characters are well written and make sense especially Damien’s friends (family). And wait until you meet Sinea’s Kit.

Wonderful world building. Action packed. Some humorous scenes. Revenge satisfied? Who’s? Vengeance satisfied? Who’s? What happens to Sonny? I said no spoilers, just little hints. : )

What stood out to me the most positively and enjoyably is the fight scenes. A joy to read. They are definitely not the norm. Few authors write like that. Thankfully this author did!

Please read and enjoy this book.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. What I love most of DN's books is that it leaves your wanting more. We meet hunter Sinea, a level 2 sorceress who is trying to get her brother Sonny is a good school by killing the beasts who enter this world. What the world aka her friends and bosses doesn't know is that Sin is keeping a very big and dangerous secret. On return to work she is greeted by an elf and werewolf looking for her brother...this can't be good. Then boom...walks in the most handsome man Sin has ever seen and he's a very old and powerful vampire known as Typhon and his colleagues are The Bane...the most fearsome group around and they are looking for her brother. Damian needs to find this kid in order to secure his freedom from the Guild but there is smtg about Sinea and he can't put his finger on it. When Damian figures it out, he's gonna have Sin help him. Sin is unsure of how her helping the Tyhpon but of she can find her brother she will do what it takes....but at what cost? Drama, lies, secrets, blasts from the past, and uncovering smtg so huge will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

This was an excellently written introduction to a new paranormal/urban fantasy world. I have to wonder what makes certain powers darkling, since the capacity to abuse power is universal. Is it simply bad PR?

The Guild had far too much power, with far too few checks and balances for this to be truly sustainable. And we never saw that the whole Uprising was ever addressed with the Guild in any official manner. Do they even know about it? There is still an army of angry darkling youths outside of the Guild's influence and reach who want to bring the Guild down as violently as possible. The folks in charge still know how to reverse the Nulling, and so their army of the disaffected can only continue to grow.

I'll also be curious to see what Damien and friends will choose to do with their freedom. And how will Sin factor into their plans, because I know that Damien will not be letting her go without a fight.

This first book in The New York Shade Series by D.N. Hoxa was a very entertaining and erotic paranormal story about the romantic and sexual relationship between Sin, a Hellbeast bounty hunter and Damian, the vampire ruler of NY. Of course, there are obstacles and misunderstandings thrown in the way, but there are certainly some very vividly described sex scenes between them during their interlude of attempting to find and free Sin's brother from a not so nice group seeking the magic Sin has unknowingly consumed into herself, the magic thief. This is a great start to what should be a very entertaining, interesting, action-packed and erotic series. I am looking forward to adding book 2 to my TBR file. Good

Sinea’s magic is far more powerful than she is registered for. And it’s of a nature that’s highly illegal.
Nonetheless, she will use it to find her brother when he goes missing, and she will join forces with a powerful older vampire if that’s what it takes!

As the first in the series it has an incomplete background story, but the main story, the disappearance of Sin’s magic, is solved by the end of the book.

This is a fast paced urban fantasy novel, with engaging characters, and a fascinating world. The side characters are as intriguing as the main characters, and leave you wondering about them almost as much.
It’s a good, solid, urban fantasy, with a little romance thrown in, and a background plot that’s sure to make you want to come back for more.
Recommended for those who love urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Good world-building, variety of characters that keep it interesting, a strong female lead that doesn't let the men in her life boss her around, plus a unique sidekick-equals a fun series. Sin Montero is a low-level sorceress who hunts hellbeasts, at least that's what she wants people to think. If they knew what she really was the Guild she works for would kill her in a heartbeat. Her secret is safe though, she passed the tests the Guild requires and has the paper to prove it. And no one would guess her cute squirrel "familiar" was anything more sinister. Until her little brother finds himself in trouble with the boogie man of the vampires. One taste of her blood and the vampire knows exactly what Sin is. If she doesn't help him get back what her brother sold, all of her secrets will be revealed and her brother's life will be over.

This story begins with a pair of sibling mercenary hellbeast hunters and soon takes a turn to the bizarre. The brother disappears and the sister is picked up by a group of darklings know as The Bane. The vampire in charge of this group sucks the blood of the sister and knows she's not a Sacri sorceress even though that is what the Guild believes her to be We also meet another trio of mercenary hellbeast hunters who come into play later in the story, There is some sexual content and lots of killing. The story ends on a semi-positive note and I can't wait to read the next installment. I highly recommend this book.

Yes, I haven't finished the book even though I was almost at the end. I just couldn't. The heroine is quite unlikable. I just didn't click with her personality. She was extremely judgmental to the hero even though she was far from a good person.
SPOILERS!
When it got to the point when she says in on sentence the hero is horrible monster and in the second she decides she will kill him - that was the minute I was just not interested anymore. I mean, I know she supposedly decide to do it for her brother, the problem is her brother was obviously irresponsible little brat who was used to his big sister doing all the work and we did not have any opportunity to see why should be his life more important. So... no.

Loved this book, Sin is a good strong character in a well thought out, interesting and dangerous world. She isn't quite what she appears to be, nor is her familiar. Sin makes a living as a bounty hunter collecting hell beast heads for the sacri guild, her life gets more complicated when her brother goes missing and Damian Reed comes into her life. There is a lot going on in this book, good chemistry between the characters and loads of well narrated action. This author has great world building skills, the Shade must be a wonderful place to live if you like everywhere to be nearby. Excellent start to a new series, really looking forward to the next one.

Supernatural new adult series, romance, one hot sex scene, lots of secrets and surprises, interesting magic world.

I liked the heroine, strong but not stupid, and there is a squirrel sidekick, although it doesn't play too big a role. Also, some really funny lines.

"There would be blood involved, broken bones, possibly fangs."

"I turned my head to the side and Behold! More male vampire glory!"

The only thing I didn't fully enjoy was the vampire-sex. That's personal opinion, I just can't see them wanting anything else than blood....

Although this is book 1 in a series, all is wrapped up in this book, just lots of potential to carry on which i do hope will happen.

This is the first I read from this author and it won’t be the last. I really enjoyed this story. The characters and the story had me completely hooked. Sinea & Damian I need more of ASAP. I love learning more about Sinea, especially her familiar or if you want to call it that.( you will know what I mean when you read) You will definitely want more of Damian. They are absolutely good together and I loved every minute they were together.

This is definitely an action-packed adventure story. Sin (Sinea) is absolutely delightful. Damian has a stupid male ego which doesn't allow him to listen to anyone it seems but otherwise he is a loyal and protective sort. A great and enjoyable story. While I loved the story overall, the ending, while acceptable, was less than satisfying.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Informative. Page-turner. Scary. Steamy. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

Magic Thief was an enjoyable read. I usually rate a book on how invested I am in the characters. Five star reviews are limited to books I literally can't put down. I end up reading that type in one sitting. I only assigned three stars here because while the story was fun, I had no problem putting it down to do other things. In a world where dark magic users are stripped away or killed by the guild, there lives one who has faked her testing & is now working for the same guild.

When her brother gets in trouble she partners with the most infamous & feared group of guild approved mercenaries to help him.

Though the book does not end at a cliffhanger, it does end at a very interesting cross road. Will eagerly look forward for the next in the series.

Enjoyable

A paranormal romance that is a bit more plot focused than most, though the romance features enough that it’s not a Urban Fantasy with a romantic subplot, at least not to me. I enjoyed it. The pacing was on point and the subtle mystery of what she is, is teased throughout, but still revealed.

I did find myself annoyed around the 85% mark though, when a familiar plot device was thrown down, one that felt a bit cheap. It was worked around by the end, but it was still noticeable and a touch trite.

This is such a great fast paced exciting read - I had a hard time putting it down because I needed to know what happened next. Sin is a wonderful lead - strong, sassy and flawed. At the end of the day she is just trying to do what's right for her and her brother. The world the author has created is detailed and I could easily visualize as I read.
I like how abilities and creatures are presented in this story. I look forward to more in this series and from this author.

I started this book and instantly felt pulled in to this story. I loved every twist , turn, and revelation in this book. Finding out exactly what Sin was was well worth the wait. I have to say this, the book stopped at a good place and left me wanting more without causing me to feel cheated. I will be eagerly awaiting book 2. This is a wonderful UF read that I highly recommend.
Happy Reading!!!
