C. G. Cooper is the USA TODAY and AMAZON BESTSELLING author of the CORPS JUSTICE novels, several spinoffs and a growing number of stand-alone novels.

One of his novels, CHAIN OF COMMAND, won the 2020 James Webb Award presented by the Marine Heritage Foundation for its portrayal of the United States Marine Corps in fiction. Cooper doesn't chase awards, but this one was special.

Cooper grew up on a steady diet of Dungeons & Dragons and the travels of a Navy family.

Upon graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in Foreign Affairs, Cooper was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps and went on to serve six years as an infantry officer. C. G. Cooper's final Marine duty station was in Nashville, Tennessee, where he fell in love with the laid-back lifestyle of Music City.

His first published novel, BACK TO WAR, came out of a desire to link back to his time in the Marine Corps. That novel, written as a side project, spawned many follow-on novels, several exciting spinoffs, and catapulted Cooper's career.

Cooper lives just south of Nashville with his wife, three children, and their German shorthaired pointer, Liberty, who's become a popular character in the Corps Justice novels.

I was on Amazon, checking the reviews of a book that I'd recently read and noticed the first book, Back To War (Corps Justice), listed in the "other books bought" feed of the page. My main vice in the book world is military thrillers so, I jumped over to the page and noticed that the first three books were being offered in a box set. I decided to pick them up after reading the book descriptions.

The review will cover all three books.

Book 1 - Back To War (Corps Justice)
In this first book of the series we're introduced to Cal Stokes. Cal is a recently retired Marine taking a stroll with his fiancé around the streets of Nashville. Unknown to Cal, he and his fiancé have been marked and have become the prey of a ruthless drug gang looking for an easy mark.

Forced into an alley to defend his fiancé, he soon realizes his mistake and finds himself surrounded. The ensuing fight will have resounding effects not only for Cal, the drug gang, but Cal's security company founded by his late father.

Unintended consequences.

The book is written in a blend of screenplay dialogue and normal paragraph formatting.

At first I found the formatting to be distracting but it doesn't take long for the action to redirect your attention from the way it's written to what’s being written.

I blew through this book in a day and a half. There isn't any attempt at a surprise plot line or misdirection tricks in this book. The plot line is obvious. What isn't obvious and what makes the story so enjoyable is seeing how Cal and the gang get there.

While I enjoyed this book, had I bought it by itself I may have skipped the rest of the series, concerned that the formatting used in this book would have been carried through the rest of the books. I'm glad I bought the box set. I would have never know the great action that awaits.

Book 2 - Council Of Patriots
In this book we find Cal firmly ensconced in his security company and reunited with old friends and family. Cal's called back to home base from an Intel gathering mission by his cousin who’s been running the company since his father was killed. It was an odd request but then this was a meeting with the representative of a highly secret group of former politicians called the Council of Patriots.

The son of a highly placed politician is being framed but no one knows why or what the blackmailers want so, Cal and his team are tasked to fly to Vegas (the scene of the crime) to see if they can smoke out the blackmailers and find out what the end goal is. If the blackmailers have their way the Empire of Japan will rise again.

Fortunately this book is written in the standard format which made it a much more enjoyable read from the beginning. This book has a really good mystery hidden and you will be very surprised when the traitor is reviled and the scope of the plan is laid bare.

We are introduced to some new characters in this book and one that is a life saver, literally, and another that could be a major asset in the future. There's plenty of action and twists to keep you glued to the pages. Throw in some cool tech toys and the Russian mob and you'll be hard pressed to put the book down.

The book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger which normally I hate but since I already had the next book I didn't feel the need to email the author to lodge a complaint :-)

Book 3 - Prime Asset
In this, the final book of the set, Cal and the team are off to locate their kidnapped friend and employee. An employee so valuable that it could not only crush Stoke's Security but have disastrous consequences for many companies as well as the government.

The return of two old enemies, united together for a common goal that serves their need for revenge, will put Cal and his team in mortal peril. If that wasn't enough, they're in the remote wilds of Wyoming, cut off from support by a traitor, facing an impending snow storm, scrambling for clues to locate their missing brother, and oh ya, there are bears in those there mountains!

It took me less than a day to read this book. Once I started it, I couldn't stop. It's packed with action and mystery with multiple plot threads running to keep Cal and the group from finding their lost comrade.

This book and the series in general, tick off many of the boxes I look for in a book. Military/spy thriller. Packed with action. Good cast of characters. self-contained. I dislike series that are either spread out over several books or need to have a reoccurring bad guy that always seems to beat the odds and escape to come back time and time again.

These books are all self-contained so while you get the best experience by reading them in order to learn the characters and their motivations, you could pick any one of them and read it with enjoyment and not feel so lost that the book falls flat.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this box set and get ready for some sleepless nights and a constant spike of adrenaline.

Not the best writing, but I enjoyed the first book enough I will continue the series, at least through the 2nd book.
Just finished 2nd book.
The story was still entertaining, but the grammatical error!
There were words completely missing from sentences which would have made those sentences clearly understood without necessitating multiple reads.
Also, I understand that many people say "me and Daniel", which is totally incorrect, but not EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER!??? You would think those characters who had "educations" would know the correct grammar of "Daniel and I".
I think I will not read the third book in the set.

Good Action, Adventure Series!

I loved the camaraderie between the group. It didn't matter what military group they came from, they all formed a tightly knit group of friends and comrades, with a great sense of extended family, and all working as a precision team for a common cause. The books were so good, that it was hard to stop reading at nighttime. I could've sat up every night, until daybreak just to read these books. They're "all that and a bag of chips," as a comment often used to mean so good, that something's way off the best side of the scale, and then some...better than the best.

Of course, that means that they also had fabulous storylines, that kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next confrontation, or escape. Great bad guys too...they were half of the storyline--you can't have a fantastic winning, hooray moment, without some incredibly crafty, smart, evil bad guys that you want to see get the justice that's coming to them.

Overall this set is 5 stars. This box set includes books one to three in The Corps Justice series (Back To War, Council of Patriots, and Prime Asset). These books could be read as standalone, but each book builds on the previous one. This set makes it easy to read them all in order without trying to find the next book. There is violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storylines so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. If you are looking for action, you will find plenty of that in these books. There are clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what will be revealed next. It definitely kept me reading. Overall it is an interesting storyline and worth taking the time to read.

Great series, but----

I would give these three books five stars for writing, characterization, description and bringing the books to real life. I won't go on about the excellence of these books because I am sure many other reviewers have
already done this.

I did not give the books A five star rating because it was clear in Mr Cooper's second book what his political leanings are. These are not political books, thus politics should be left out of the books. This said, I'm off to read Book Four.

This series seems to be written by some clueless rookie hack with little experience or understanding of writing, life. politics, the military, or any of the topics and issues he explores. His writing is full of cliches and sensational terms like "miraculously" and poor grammar including "comprised of" and "towards." The actions and dialog of seasoned military veterans are not remotely plausible or believable. I forced myself to gag through the first book and threw in the towel a few pages into #2. Not worth the time or effort. A waste of money. This isn't just bush-league writing. It's embarrassing, cringe-worthy schlock. AI might give you more convincing and digestible reading. Don't waste your time with this garbage. And shame on anyone who compares this author to Flynn or Child. That's professional injustice.

This was a decent fast paced read if you like cheering for the retired marine stereotypical mercenary who is always committed to "doing the right thing". I thought the first book in the box set ended a bit abruptly, but was still pretty good at setting up the likable characters who appear in the the remaining two books. The second book was a bit over the top, but still ok. The third book was decent, but the editors must have been in a hurry due to the outrageous number of typos, usage, and punctuation errors that I tried to report (using my Kindle) but I was finally worn down and just ignored the rest so I could finish. Shame on the editorial process that was used to deliver this book! It was my first read by this author and I am a little wary of reading more offerings.

I liked all three books. I liked the characters and the way they were developed. Seems you had one of every type. All the good guys were former military but almost always with a blemish on their record in the service. From gritty city streets, to a farm house, to the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas and then to the snowy mountains of Wyoming, this team of guys forms S.S.I. (Stokes Security International) a security firm that take on the bad guys with all premium hardware, weapons and technology you could wish for. It's an exciting easy to read series. The stories move along quickly so be ready to be up late.

A peak into a warriors mind.

C. G. Cooper has taken us on a journey through the eyes and mindset of American warriors. The pure and un-adaulted, pure ethos that the American fighting man lives and sometimes dies.
The best of them are upstanding citizen soldiers, regardless of what branch they end up in. These men are the best of us, and throughout their careers hold fast to our idea's of honesty, and justice!
Powerful, and moving, snippets of what our men and women, go through to keep our country safe. Yes there are groups that operate behind the scenes to keep that flag flying over this great nation!

I love reading action-adventure series. From my early days with the Hardy Boys to characters like Jack Reacher, the Gray Man, Dirk Pitt, John Corey, etc. So when a friend suggested CG Cooper’s series, I was naturally excited to have months of fun reading ahead of me. I read the first three books in the Corps Justice series was pretty disappointed. The writing and dialog were trite and vapid, the characters were plastic, one-dimensional, and not believable, and there were editing mistakes throughout the books. While the storylines kept my attention enough to plow through to the conclusions, I was constantly muttering “FFS” at every turn. I doubt I’ll move on to number 4.

Good adventure series. Books are independent but can be read as a single story. The main challenge for each book is focused but the characters continue as if one longer story.

The former Marines face challenges and, of course, are extremely lucky to get out of the messes they find. One character jokes about his nine lives - wonder how long he will last in the series.

On one hand, the books are based on the idea of vigilante justice and that is wrong but the stories about conquering the really bad guys makes us cheer for the team. A guilty pleasure.

Excellent read first 3 books all winners.

Had just read the first Reacher book and found this 3 book series. Good storyline, character development was excellent, lots of action and each story leads to the next like a good series should. Books 1-3 completed guess its time to buy the next series. I won't go into detail but if you like action, intriguing characters, political thrillers this series is for you. From gangs in Nashville to Japanese warlords in Vegas to the mountains of Wyoming each story is good.

Dues ex Machina

Very readable. Nasty antagonist and likable protagonist. Not a series for ladies because it's lacking any main female characters except The Hammer. Also, I feel it's not a series for anyone who never served in the military. I served during the Vietnam era and got out as an E-6, same level as Cal.

That said, each scenario was unique. Also, Cooper did a nice job to bring new readers up to speed in case the do not read the books in chronological order. Will probably read more of the series in the future.

This book/series just did not jive with me... to the extent where I lost all desire to finish it. I made it through the first book and most of the 2nd. However, it just lacked that allure that captivates me.

I struggled to relate with any of the characters & often found myself cringing at the "comic" remarks very much military in nature. If you have served or are close to someone who has, perhaps this writing style will be more your flavor... for me, not so much.

Very entertaining!

After receiving a free copy of God-Speed from Mr. Cooper’s website, I ended up purchasing the first three novels of the Corps Justice series. From the first book “Back to War”, The short story made more sense who the father was. This isn’t really a review, but I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys this genre. I look forward to reading the entire series.

I enjoyed the first 3 as Cal and the SSI gang kept it moving at a steady pace. After book 1 you kind of have an idea of how the others are going to play out but there were enough details and revolving characters to make it a bot more interesting.

I am onto book 4 now and looking forward to what trouble finds Cal in this one.

Great series of books to read if you enjoy the Military suspense thriller type of books.

Just added C.G. Cooper to favorite author list

Exceptional. Exellent concept flawlessly executed with superb writing skills. Fast moving plots and action scenes kept me reading more and more. Lots of intrigue building to solid ends to every book. Solid insight to the warrior's code and deadly skills, plus their emptiness after leaving service to their country.

Incredibly good!

I took a chance on these books and wow am I glad I did. It's hard to find really great military type books written for a wide audience. C. G. Cooper accomplishes this with interesting characters with realistic emotions and motives, and engaging action driven plots. I'm definitely reading more from this author.

Corps Justice

It was interesting and good. My husband was in the Army and I understand quite a bit. My dad was a marine and I think he would've joined the SSI team if he would've been asked. I was sad when Brian died. I didn't want him too! I like Cal and Trav. I hope nothing happens to them. I can't wait to read the next book.

Great series

This three book set was a great introduction to the series. As a retired USN corpsman I understand the camaraderie that military personnel have for each other. Any one in the military knows some secret the American public is not privy to. Thanks for the great entertainment.

A Powerhouse trio

Every book I read of his is always exciting. I don't care to start one unless I have time to read the whole thing, as they are hard to put down! His characters are always well-defined and find themselves in interesting circumstances. Mr. Cooper is fast becoming my favorite author.

Totally love this series

These books were unbelievable. I love the military. My father was in the navy during World War Two. He told me how it was more like family in the service. My dad came home but he went to every reunion that he could make before he died. We have all his medals. I wonder if there was a company like SSI.

Getting into The Corps Justice Series, I'm so proud of all our armed forces. Even though it is fiction.

Each of the characters come across so real, I can picture each one as the story goes on. I somehow wish there was a group like these patriots in our country today. I really enjoy reading C.G. Cooper's Series. Ready for the next group.

The first book was great and the other two were just good. The reason is these are not truly written as a series but stand alone books. They are full of review of information to get the reader who hasn't read the previous book up to date with the character and story line. I don't like these type of books because of the review parts. The story lines are good and the characters are fairly well developed but I will not be continuing with the series.

Now on Book 4 in this series.
Unashamedly testosterone-flooded heroes; my type of novels. Lots of criminal behaviour that needs resolving, few of the current female messy characters of most novels, and lots of justice.
Really good escapsim, and in my opinion, some good writing. At least I don't find myself saying in my head 'that's so juvenile'.

Pure political drivel, but somehow also enjoyable

I'm not saying this wasn't a fun read (it is), but you should probably go into the adventure understanding that political propaganda is in your future. I got the book for free, so it was worth the price. I think someone in the mood for pulp fiction or a soap opera will likely enjoy the few hours it takes to get through this one.

A rattling good adventure yarn

Uncomplicated and full of incident these Corps Justice books demand you keep reading on to the end. The good guys win, the bad guys die and there's no romance to clutter up the story. Almost perfect!
