“Claude is a small, plump dog who is quite the snazzy dresser” with his jaunty beret, jaunty jumper and well-polished shoes. His best friend is Sir Bobblysock.

My kids and I have read other Claude books (one was even studied by my eldest with her class, “Claude in the City”, as part of the school curriculum). The adventures each follow the same structure. They start in the morning with Claude at home as his owners Mr and Mrs Shinyshoes go out to work; Claude and Sir Bobblysock then go out and have an adventure making such an impression on the people they meet in the story that they/he/she asks them to accompany them/him/her as they go about their future business to which Claude and Sir Bobblysock politely decline as they prefer home which they then return to taking along some remnant of their adventure with them which Mr and Mrs Shinyshoes spot and comment on when they too return home, wondering as to whether Claude was in any way responsible for it or had he in fact just spent the whole day sleeping instead.

“Claude at the Palace” sees Claude and Sir Bobblysock going out in spite of the rain as they need something to eat. They then unexpectedly and quite suddenly find themselves in front of “a terribly fancy building with a flag fluttering above it.” There is then a cry of help or three from inside that Claude and Sir Bobblysock go and answer. “The royal nanny, dear Nanny Stern-Bloomers, has suddenly got one of her headaches, so she’s having a long lie down with a bag of frozen peas… Of course now there is no one to look after the Royal Children. It’s very important that they are kept out of mischief and stay clean and tidy in their party outfits.” So Claude and Sir Bobblysock are the replacement nannies, but things get very messy. “I have a feeling… that you are not really royal nannies at all…” Anyway a disaster then happens but Claude and Sir Bobblysock save the day and the Queen ends up having “the best party ever!”. It's a really fast-paced storyline and after that there is also Claude’s “guide to throwing a royal tea party”.

There is plenty of humour. The humour comes through the characters names, for example Mr Lovelybuns the baker who has the best buns in town. It comes through Sir Bobblysock displaying human-like behaviour when you wouldn’t expect him to, him being a sock after all. It comes through the fact that Claude has a Tardis-like beret with many, many useful things inside that he can just pull out when he needs. It comes through the silliness of the stories.

The art style – a limited colour palette of red, grey, black and white – is consistent through the book (with a bit of gold on the covers too) and the art flows through every page making this book easy to read, appealing to look at, and fantastic for young, new readers (although some jokes like the pun on Mr Lovelybuns name that are maybe aimed at older readers may be lost on them). This book also has a shiny cover and looks impressive from the outside as well as the inside. Lovely book. 5-stars.

It was really shocking and especially the bit where um um they spattered cake all over the place! At the end it was so cool because um the whole cake spattered onto every single person and it was so funny and I laughed so loudly I nearly screamed my head off.

Not my favourite Claude book but it was a simple little story that younger readers will appreciate however I did find some typos that the publishers need to address.
