Pour lutter contre l'invasion des démons géants surgis des entrailles de Terra Amata, l'oncle de Robert a créé une usine de robots géants prêts à les affronter. Robert, lui, est gardien de nuit dans cette usine. Un travail plutôt tranquille jusqu'au jour où il est accusé de sabotage. Mais le jeune homme est bien décidé à faire la lumière sur son innocence.

Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice) is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director.

Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.

Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.

His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.

From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

Dank Gratis Comic Tag mal in das Donjon-Comic-Universum hineingeschnuppert. Es ist mir schon öfter begegnet, aber da ich sie wegen des Stils nicht richtig einordnen konnte, war ich eher irritiert und habe in kein Album hineingeschaut. Die Autoren Sfar und Trondheim haben ihr Universum in die Zukunft (und Vergangenheit) erweitert. Mich erinnert die Gestaltung des Covers alles an das Spiele-Universum Warhammer, was aber eher in Richtung Persiflage geht. Das Motto "Der Donjon, das sind mehr als tausend Tote im Monat" passt sehr gut dazu.
Aber die Story um Rubeus Khan hat mir gefallen, und nach Eingewöhnung hat auch der Stil, dass alle Figuren Tierform haben, und der Retro-Look mir zugesagt. Der Humor ist grimmig, die Verwendung von Robotern in dieser Story hat auch etwas. Rubeus Kahn, der (Anti)held ist ein Erpel, und da muss man schon an andere Erpel der Comic-Geschichte wie Donald oder Duffy Duck denken. Anspielungen gehören zum Programm.

L'armée du crâne m'avait déjà surpris car je le sentais éloigné de l'univers Donjon, mais pour Rubéus Khan, les auteurs ont encore franchi un pas ! Et peu importe, finalement, car derrière quelques liens avec la saga initiale, le tome est vraiment très bon en lui-même. L'univers est très intéressant, mélangeant des codes du polar, du steampunk, de la culture japonaise et de l'anticipation. L'histoire est bien menée et exaltante. Et puis, ce dessin et ces animalisations incroyables ! Mention spéciale au héros, sorte de Donald Duck vénère... Vivement la suite !

Robert von Vaucason, allein erziehender Erpel aus armen Verhältnissen mit Agressionsproblemen und festen Grundsätzen ("Die Familie ist heilig"), wird zweifaches Opfer eines Komplotts seines reichen und skrupellosen Onkels, in dessen Roboter-Fabrik Robert als Nachtwächter arbeitet. Der 43. Band der Donjon-Reihe spielt am weitesten in der Zukunft und ist angesiedelt in einer Stadt, die man als "Gothamhausen" bezeichnen möchte: Düster ist kein Ausdruck und die Anspielungen auf eine andere Stadt mit ähnlicher Bevölkerung und ähnlichen Kfz sind allzu offensichtlich. Achten Sie auf das Spielzeug auf Seite 12. Diese mit Action geladene Geschichte ist ein Solitär. Den können Sie lesen, ohne das Donjon-Universum kennen zu müssen. Allerdings scheint eine Fortsetzung möglich und wünschenswert. Dann gibt es fünf Sterne.

Donjon in the future. A different take, same kind of fantastic humor. Can barely get enough... oh, there are so many series, I can get enough to read for another couple of years, as I'm "only" reading comics inbetween anyway.
