Cold Conviction is the third book in the Aspen Adams suspense / thriller series written by Daryl Wood Gerber. Published in October of 2020, this one takes us back to a cold case involving the murder of the protagonist's parents. Aspen's mother and father surprised a burglar who shot and killed them both; or did they? Clearly there is more to the story, and when Aspen's sister begs her to investigate the ~15-year-old crime, a chain of events is kicked off by starting a new round of murders.

I've read a couple of the author's lighter mystery series and the two previous books in this series; all are great. I'm very fond of Gerber's writing style, character development, and plots. There were only two items in this book that gave me a moment of concern, both minor. (1) I'm not sure I truly understood why Rosie, Aspen's sister, had the urgent desire to suddenly investigate now. Ultimately, it's just what kicks off the mystery, so it is hardly an issue but I would've liked a little more strength there. (2) Aspen was a little colder than usual in this one. She's not the lovey/dovey type generally, but in a few scenes I felt we needed more warmth from her. Again, quite minor.

That said, the story is incredibly rich with details. Gerber must've spent a significant amount of time mapping out all the pieces and integrating them seamlessly into the chapters. Each scene builds upon the last one, offering some hints but not enough to grasp the full background... until she wants us to. It connects a lot of conversations from early on and presents an exceptionally strong and compelling murder case. I didn't guess the killer, and part of me didn't totally try to do that because the story was just so well written, I sat back and enjoyed it this time.

I find this to be a great alternative to the intense thrillers and cozy mysteries I read... as it provides that perfect middle ground of reality and drama without massive questions and concentration. A wonderful read on a lazy afternoon where you want to feel invested but also don't want to finish it all in one setting... let it stick around for a few days so you can enjoy all the energy that went into building a brilliant setting.

Cold Conviction, the third in the Aspen Adams series, is a great addition to the series. As Aspen has worked to solve other mysteries in the prior stories, the case of her parents' murder has been in the background of the other stories. Her sister Rosie has had problems with addiction over the years and now has begged Aspen to open the cold case of their parents' murders so that she can get closure and maybe get drug free, so that they all will have closure. Rosie has some guilt with the case even though she didn't kill them. Things are foggy to her. Aspen and boyfriend, Nick, detective with the Placer County Sheriff's Department, leave Lake Tahoe to travel to Atherton, California, to find answers. Nick is called back to Lake Tahoe but Aspen refuses to leave without answers. As she revisits the case and talks to people questioned during the investigation, things happen that show that she is getting close to answers. This is a complicated, layered mystery to unravel and is fun to read and go along with Aspen's own investigation. I did not really have this figured out although I was close. But finally Aspen and her family gets closure and she has the start of a new life...exciting news. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and revisiting the characters.

This is the third book in the Aspen Adams series, but I hadn’t read the others and still was completely sucked into this one. The writing was excellent full of realistic characters and suspects and a great mystery. Aspen’s parents were murdered years before and her sister Rosie calls her to ask her to look into the cold case as Rosie says the guilt is why she’s never been able to stop using. Aspen visits her home town and dives into the case even though it is obviously emotionally difficult. Early into her investigation she gets warned away which only makes her more invested. I really enjoyed this case of characters and will definitely be reading the previous two books and I hope future volumes. Aspen is a great protagonist and an excellent private detective.

This book should come with the warning that it will suck you in and make you loose time! Correction, the entire series should come with that warning, but in particular the plot in this book of the series was so compelling that I just couldn't stop reading. Realistic characters drive the storylines and make the plots more intriguing. In this book we follow along as Aspen, the main character, is taking on the cold case of her parents murders and things get complicated in a hurry with old emotions brought to the surface and not knowing who from her parents past that she can trust. Excellent twists and turns to keep you up and turning pages late into the night! You could read the book as a stand alone, but you would be missing out on some great storylines and build up by skipping the first books in the series. I really do recommend that you read the whole series for maximum enjoyment!

Aspen Adams enjoys working as a private detective for her Aunt Max’s agency in Lake Tahoe. However, this time the case she is working on is a personal one. Fourteen years ago, Aspen’s parents were murdered in their home and the case has remained unsolved. Her sister Rosie was troubled even then, but her life has spiraled into addiction since then because of guilt she has felt all this time. Rosie begs Aspen to look into the cold case in hopes that the answers she finds may help her get her life back on track. Aspen has always wanted answers, too, so she goes over all the old evidence and won’t back down, even when her questions could put her own life in danger.

“Cold Conviction” is the third book in this suspense series. I have read both of the prior books and although the story in this book does stand alone, I would recommend reading the prior books first so get to know the characters better. Aspen is able to get more information now that her parents’ case is cold since people are willing to admit things they wouldn’t before. Aspen’s boyfriend Nick is a detective and her aunt is a private investigator. However, Aspen is on her own for most of the book and I missed the interplay between her and those most important to her. I haven’t been completely on board with Aspen and Nick as a couple, but he definitely looks like a prince compared to Aspen’s ex-husband who makes an unwelcome reappearance in Aspen’s life as she is conducting her investigation. Rosie is a more sympathetic character in this book, but because I’ve read the first two books and have seen how she has treated her daughter, it’s hard for me to feel much pity for her.

The investigation is interesting and Aspen doesn’t overlook anything when reexamining the old evidence. One of the suspects she questions insists money is owed to him by her parents’ estate and claims they had a hidden treasure. Aspen doesn’t know what he’s talking about but as she investigating the murder, she keeps her eyes open for any clues that point to the existence of something valuable that one of her parents may have hidden. I enjoyed the resolution to that subplot at the end of the book.

Although there were a few different suspects in the murder of Lily and James Adams, I thought the evidence clearly led in one direction and guessed many of the answers before Aspen. Aspen is able to find closure on a few important things in her life, although a couple of things in the final chapter remain ambiguous. I don’t know for sure, but I’m wondering if this could be the end of this series. Many things are wrapped up, but we don’t know for sure how things will work out for Aspen, Nick, Rosie, and Rosie’s daughter Candace.

Excellent, well-written, fast-paced drama! I was glued to the story from the first page to the last. I loved the various relationships through out the story line. Esp. that of Aspen and her niece Candance. Max and Aspen and Aspen and Nick. I liked the fact that the romance didn't overshadow the mystery. In some suspense novels that can be the case. I was so happy that Aspen and esp. Rosie could finally get some closure to their parent's brutal murders. The suspects were many and I found myself often reaching for a pen and notebook to construct my own "murder board" to keep track of it all! I have read many of Gerber's cozy mysteries and love them! This is the second suspense novel of hers I have read and I must say she is as talented with this genre as she is with cozies! I hope there are more books in this series to come!

While this book can definitely be read as a stand-alone, it would be best/helpful to read books 1 and 2 to give a little more insight about the characters and their backgrounds..etc.

I really enjoyed Cold Conviction by Daryl Wood Gerber. This is the third book in the Aspen Adams series; while I think it works fine as a standalone (enough background is given that it would be easy to figure out who's who), I think I loved it even more because I'd read the earlier books.

Aspen is great, and it's been fun to see her move from a fledgling PI who could only serve subpoenas and do other minor tasks to a quality investigator in her own right. This time, she leaves her Lake Placid home and heads to the Bay area to look into the cold-case murder of her parents.

The author plotted this out so well....Aspen starts with the old case notes and files, and there is SO much intricate detail. This is a good thing, and it all makes sense....I was so impressed with all the "tiny parts" and how everything fit together in the end.

I always love reading about Lake Placid, but it was nice to see Aspen in a new place, meeting new people, and being more "on her own" than when she's home surrounded by helpful family and friends.

Highly recommended for all mystery/suspense fans!

COLD CONVICTION, the third book in the Aspen Adams suspense novels by Daryl Wood Gerber, is another terrific addition to an intriguing series. In the former two books, there are hints at the tragedy that befell Aspen’s parents many years before. In this newest release, Aspen is plunged head first into solving the cold case surrounding their brutal murder. When her deeply flawed sister begs her to find the truth and in doing so, help her recover from deep-seated guilt, Aspen has no choice. But can she face the truth if it implicates her only sister? From the calming wilderness of Lake Tahoe to the hustle and bustle of the Bay area, Ms. Gerber captures the vibes of the setting and makes them come alive. Aspen is a well-developed and sympathetic protagonist and I can’t help but admire how she’s stepped in to singlehandedly raise her sister’s young teen daughter. This adds a layers of emotional involvement for the reader. I also enjoy the relationship Aspen has, not only with her niece, but also with her private investigator elderly aunt. She’s a good sounding board and resource for Aspen’s investigation.

As Aspen begins her methodical investigation she finds her father may have made enemies as an attorney. The reader is taken for a ride as clues are uncovered and progress is made in uncovering the killer. With plenty of suspects to keep the reader guessing, I appreciated the “murder board” Aspen set up to help me keep track of them. Thrown into the mix is a tale of a long ago gambling debt, a hidden treasure, and some romance. With a few unexpected twists and an edge-of-your-seat reveal that had me turning pages faster and faster, I hope to see more of Aspen Adams in future books!

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We’re back with PI Aspen Adams. This time the case she takes on is personal. The case that has never been solved. Her parent’s murder.

Fourteen years ago, her parents were murdered in their own home. Aspen was away at college but her sister Rosie found the bodies and was looked at as a suspect for a while. Rosie is an addict. She’s stolen from them before, but why kill them?

Rosie is not my favorite person. Aspen is also raising Rosie’s daughter. So when Rosie calls and begs her to find out who did this, she does. She goes home and starts asking questions. People begin to act strangely and she has quite a few possible suspects.

But in the end, will she live to prove who was really guilty?

I loved this one. It was a twisty, confusing, and action-packed all the way to the end. And no, the one person responsible wasn’t even on my radar! So, good job!

"Cold Conviction" by Daryl Wood Gerber is the fabulous third book in the Aspen Adams series. Just when I honestly thought I couldn't love the series any more than I already did, this book changed my mind. "Cold Conviction" offered up everything I love about the series, plus a few new elements:

1. Great characters! Aspen, our heroine, is wonderful. She simultaneously comes across as likable, intelligent, brave (but not stupidly so), and honorable. Her PI skills are improving the longer she work for Aunt Max, and her confidence in herself and her abilities is increasing as well. Combined with her past career as a psychologist, Aspen has all the tools needed to effectively unravel mysteries. I was thrilled to see her really "coming into her own" as an investigator in this installment. We didn't get as much of Nick, Candace, and Max this time around, but they all made appearances. We did spend a bit more time with Rosie (if mostly by phone), and got to meet plenty of new folks. We also got to know Aspen's deceased parents (and grandparents) in more detail. Also: More of Antoine in the next book, please!

2. The location! While I love reading about the Lake Tahoe area where Aspen lives, it was also fun to travel with her to the Bay area and learn more about it. I especially appreciated Aspen's nostalgia for Lake Tahoe, even as she enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and places in her (temporary) new location.

3. The mystery itself! This book addresses a critical cold case: the decade-old unsolved mystery of who killed Aspen's parents. She was a college student at the time of the crime, and not able to do much more than try to get through the experience. Now, Aspen is proving to be a thorough and relentless investigator, and I appreciated the methodical way she worked through all the old clues and information. The plot was intricate and detailed, but everything fit together perfectly. I was able to figure out of it, but part of it came as a surprise...this is ideal...it means the author provided enough clues to point the reader in the right direction, but was clever enough not to make it too obvious!

4. Hints of the future: This book wrapped up with some interesting developments. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but I can't wait to see what happens in book 4!

Five out of delicious blocks of medium cheddar!

Cold Conviction is the third in the Aspen Adams suspense series by Daryl Wood Gerber. This entry in the series finds Aspen investigating a cold case very personal to her - the murder of her parents.

Aspen is a former therapist who has become a private investigator. Her personal life is somewhat chaotic as she is raising her niece Candace since her sister Rosie, Candace’s mother, is an addict. This family drama plays a large part in Aspen’s investigation of her parents’ murder. Since the murder happened 14 years before this story takes place, there is a lot of painstaking detective work to be done. Author Daryl Wood Gerber skillfully balances the investigative elements with the present family drama and the feelings that inevitably are stirred in Aspen as she revisits events that occurred so long ago.

I like Aspen a great deal. She’s very level-headed and down to earth. She’s forthcoming about her mistakes and shortcomings, at least in her narration of events to an unseen audience, and that makes her relatable. The cast of characters around her are also appealing, particularly her boyfriend Nick and her best friend Serenity. The mystery has plenty of suspects and the solution was quite a surprise to me.

I have long been a fan of Daryl Wood Gerber’s cozy mysteries. Here she proves that she is just as adept at writing traditional mystery and suspense. While this is the third book is the series, it can easily be read as a stand alone since enough background is given to fill in any missing pieces. I plan to read the first two in the series since this one was so enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Cold Conviction by Daryl Wood Gerber is the 3rd An Aspen Adams Novel of Suspense. It can be read as a standalone, but I believe you will understand Aspen (and the other characters) better if you read the books in order. Aspen Adams is a complex woman with a big heart. Aspen is a private investigator working for her Aunt Max and raising her niece, Candace. Candace is doing much better now that she has a stable home life, but she does not give up hope that her mother will change. The author has created realistic, developed characters. I thought Cold Conviction was well-written with steady pacing. The mystery is multifaceted with the suspense ramping up as Aspen gets closer to the solution. Aspen went about the investigation in a methodical manner. The details are revealed a little at a time. I enjoyed following Aspen as she worked to resolve the case making sure to leave no stone unturned. The reveal scene was action packed and I liked how everything came together. I was, though, left with an unanswered question or two. I was able to arrive at the resolution for this whodunit early in the book because the evidence pointed in one direction. As more details were revealed, it confirmed what I had deduced. I would have liked for the mystery to be more of a challenge for the reader to solve. As Aspen was away from Lake Tahoe for most of the book, I missed the interactions between her and the other characters. They appear now and then plus there are phone calls, but it is not quite the same. I am a fan of Aunt Max and Candace. Aspen’s relationship with Nick is progressing nicely. Nick is so different from Aspen’s ex-husband, Damien who makes an appearance. He is sleaze with a capital S. I loved the descriptions of Grandma Patrice’s artwork especially her puzzle boxes. Cold Conviction is my favorite book in this series. I look forward to Aspen Adams next adventure. Cold Conviction is a dynamic tale with a strident sister, a nasty neighbor, melancholy memories, a benign beau, storage shed mementoes, a controlled killer, and a determined daughter.

Cold Conviction is book 3 in Daryl Wood Gerber's mystery series featuring Aspen Adams. I've read and loved several of the author's cozy mystery books, but this was a more suspenseful and darker novel than the tales from her other series'. I enjoyed this book and all the great components of her writing style were there, though this particular series is not a cozy.

In Cold Conviction Aspen Adams is a private detective who takes on a cold case involving her parents at the request of her sister, Rosie. As a mystery, it's strong and is well poised between possessing some heavyish elements but without any violence. I like Aspen as a character as she fights for what she believes in, and doesn't keep the results of her own sleuthing to herself. With some tension and tidbits of romance, there is something for everyone in this super story. Daryl Wood Gerber has great talent and I will be reading more from this series (I've yet to read the first two) as well as others in her cozies.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

This is the third book in this thriller series; I've read the first two books in the series, but this stands alone fine. I think the books would be best enjoyed read in order, though, so I recommend reading the first two first for background. I love the character of Aspen and also the Tahoe setting, but in this book, Aspen travels back to the San Francisco area to investigate the violent deaths of her parents, 14 years ago, when she was a college freshman. Having lost my mother to cancer my freshman year of college, this was especially poignant to me. Aspen is now a private investigator, so she has the skills to take previously undisclosed information from her sister Rosie, and try to see if she can solve this case once and for all, as she's always wanted to do. I would have liked to have seen more in this book from Aspen's boyfriend, but maybe she needed to do this alone. This book is a satisfying end to this series if it has to end, but I'd love for it to continue. I definitely recommend this well-written, exciting book and series; I was provided an arc of this book, but these opinions are my own.

If you are a fan of Daryl Wood Gerber's cozy mysteries do yourself a favor and dive into the Aspen Adams suspense novels. Cold Conviction is the third book in this series and you definitely will want to start from the beginning.
Aspen Adams demands justice for her clients as a private investigator but this cold case is the most important one she's ever had and she will stop at nothing to find the truth.
Aspen's parents were brutally murdered 14 years prior and the case was never solved. Rosie, her sister, pleads with Aspen to go back to their hometown to finally solve the mystery. Going through the files, painstakingly interviewing witnesses, even when things turn deadly, she doesn't let anything get her in her way. With attention to detail and enough twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end, this page turner by Daryl Wood Gerber will leave you wanting more. I am looking forward to this author's next book whether it be in this series or another.

This is the second book in the Aspen series. Aspen’s parents were murdered when she was a freshman in college. The case was ruled robbery, and the killer was never found. When her sister calls, remembering something from that time, Aspen, no a private investigator, decides to look into her parents death. But as she is asking questions, she starts uncovering things. And then she begins getting followed. Can she solve the 14 year old murder of her parents, without getting hurt herself?

Overall, I enjoyed this story. But it took me a while to get into it. It seemed like it started out slow to me. But a little ways into it, I was drawn into the story and had to know what happened. I didn’t know this was part of a series when I started this book, I think I had read the first 2, I’d have been able to get into the story quicker. The book was well written and the characters were all likable.

Daryl Wood Gerber is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Cold Conviction is the third installment of her Aspen Adams series. It is so well written it, it could be a stand-alone mystery that you want more stories to get to know the characters better. Lake Tahoe is now on my list as somewhere I have to visit, thanks to the wonderful descriptions in this book. Just when I thought I had it figured out, she surprised me with who the actual killer was. Now I have to read the other books in the series. I hope there are more books coming!

For the past 14 years, Aspen and her sister Rosie have wondered what really happened the night of their parent's murder. Was it robbery gone wrong or intended murder? After a drunken call from Rosie, Aspen decides to return to their home town and put her budding investigative skills to work. I liked getting to go back to learn more about Aspen before the series started and the people and events who helped form her character. It was good to get some closure on the past so that Aspen, Rosie, and Candace can move forward. I liked the multiple suspects and no easy answers. But I, like Aspen, didn't like being away from Tahoe for most of the book. The setting is one of my main draws to the series and somehow Silicon Valley doesn't have the same appeal. But that is a mark of good writing: the reader feels the same comfort the characters feel about being home!

Aspen is a no nonsense person who just wants answers and closure about her parents murder that happened years prior. She tracks down people who worked on the case, hoping they are able to tell her something that might help her figure it all out. This book is action packed, full of suspense, and I couldn't put it down. I had no idea who the murderer was, and I never figured out who it was until they were revealed. This is the third book in the Aspen Adams series and this time, it’s really personal. After all these years, Aspen’s sister, Rosie, has finally remembered a new detail about their parent’s deaths. She begs Aspen to investigate these murders, promising that with the resolution of this cold case, she will have the impetus to finally get and stay clean. Aspen initially rejects her plea, but when she discovers a gun hidden in one of her grandmother’s puzzle box, she decides she needs to delve into the case. This story is a journey not only into the murders, but also into the people and places of Aspen’s past...and by investigating the past, she may also affect her future! I enjoyed the interactions between the main characters, especially her relationships with her aunt and niece. There were lots of clues, motives and even red herrings until the final reveal. I hope there are further stories with Aspen...she is a strong female character with good intuitions and capable of watching her own back. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book through Net Galley and all opinions are strictly my own.

Aspen has to face her most difficult task. She needs to help her sister and her niece, by investigating the murder of her parents. They were killed 14 years ago. The police were never able to find who murdered them. This stopped Aspen and her sister from accepting their loss and moving forward. Watching them struggle was heartbreaking. I was pulled into this story. Aspen puts herself in danger to get to the truth. I admired her strength and courage. I knew that the killer would go to any length to stop her but Aspen won't be stopped. The desire to get closure is overpowering. Aspen Adams is a character that I admired. The tragedy didn't break her. It made her stronger. Her boyfriend, Nick Shaper, is there to support her and love her. We all need someone who believes in us. They make a great couple. Daryl Wood Gerber wrote a powerful and emotional mystery. It was a wild ride to find the truth. The ending was a shock. It was so unexpected. I loved Cold Conviction. The story is powerful and the characters with their secrets and lies add drama. This book is a keeper!

Daryl Wood Gerber is skilled at building the setting for his mysteries. This is the 3rd book in the Aspen Adams series but this is the one where we find out the truth behind Aspen's mysterious background. She knew this day would come but she's not sure if she's ready. When her parents were killed 14yrs ago and no one was ever arrested for the murder, Aspen knew someday she would have to investigate and bring to justice her parents killer. Her sister has asked her to solve this cold case. Their lives may depend on it now.

If you have never read any Daryl Wood Gerber titles, you are in for a treat. You'd swear you had seen these on the nightly news or read them in the local newspaper, they just can't be fiction, they are too good. Suspenseful with multiple story threads that must be woven together before Aspen figures out the truth, Cold Conviction is an excellent read.

Aspen Adams’ parents were murdered years ago and the case has never been solved. She is working as a private investigator for her Aunt Max when her sister, Rosie, begs her to reopen the case. The deaths of their parents sent Rosie on a course of self-destruction and Aspen has been raising Rosie’s teen daughter. Aspen’s lover, Nick Shafer, a detective with the Placer County sheriff’s department, agrees to go along as she reviews the case with the detective who was in charge. Little by little Aspen uncovers evidence that will lead her to not only the murderer, but to the “family treasure” that the murderer may have been after. The shocking conclusion to the murders will put Aspen in danger. Will she live long enough to find justice for her parents? An intricate mystery and an ending that I did not see coming. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
