Booked for Christmas, a novella from debut author Lily Menon, is sure to get readers in the holiday spirit! Novelist Sophia Hart (real Sophie Bartholomew-Kaur-Hughes, but try fitting that on a book cover) absolutely hates her loudest critic—Evan Wolfe, evil mastermind behind the Lone Wolfe book review column. They've never met, but Wolfe's favorite pastime seems to be dumping on Sophie's unapologetically happy, magical romances. Sophie, not one to be left behind, gets her revenge in her own ways (never annoy a writer in search of a villain). When Sophie decides to throw a holiday party at her cabin, Wolfe is the last person on her mind. But the universe has a twisted sense of humor. Not only does Wolfe show up as someone’s plus one, but a massive snowstorm blows in, stranding them both alone together in Sophie’s cabin. Over the next few days, Sophie begins to realize that Wolfe isn’t as odiously cynical a man as she’d originally thought. In fact, he’s kind of…sweet. And impossibly hot. But still, Sophie’s been hurt before and she has so much to lose. What she needs is one sure sign that she and Wolfe are meant to be together. Will Sophie and Wolfe get their Christmas miracle?
This was a cute, Christmasy and hate to love romance. I did enjoy it but I wish it was fleshed out more and it was a short story so of course the romance happened quickly but honestly? I could would have loved this as a full length novel.
The beginning of this short was so cool and different. Plus it was halfway through the book and they still hated each other (besides the obvious attraction they both clearly felt).
But then it was like, a switch flipped. Evan Wolfe was this perfect gentleman and Sophie (a bunch of last names) saw that glimmer of something more… It really only happened after Wolfe had to save her ‘damsel in distress’ style. Which, okay, I understand a plot device but also come on!
Besides that, this wasn’t a bad story! I liked the heated conflict between the two characters (later classified as sexual tension). And the group of friends Sophie had were fun and diverse!
Sandhya Menon can do it all! This was an adorable and fast-paced Christmas-themed novella, which features a writer and a book critic who are snowed in after a storm.
Yeah this was delightful! I had high hopes for this and they were all met! My sole issue is that I wish it had been a little bit longer. But it was fluffy, it was funny, I really enjoyed it!
When I first heard about Booked for Christmas by Lily Menon, I knew that I had to read it.
For those who don’t know, Lily Menon is the adult romance pen name for the YA author of sweet romances named Sandhya Menon. While writing under the Lily Menon name, the books are more explicit, so if you just want a sweet romance, move along. However, if you’re looking for an enemies to lover romance between a romance author and the book critic who continually decimated her novels in his newspaper column, then make sure you pick up this $0.99 novella ASAP.
In Booked for Christmas, Sophie, aka the romance author Sophia Hart, is having her annual Christmas party at her small town cabin when she unexpectedly meets the book critic who hates her novels, Evan Wolfe. He shows up at the door, even though Sophie hadn’t invited him, as Will’s plus one except that Will is home sick in bed. He showed up because he didn’t recognize Sophie’s legal name on the invitation. Once they meet, the sparks start flying by way of sarcasm-filled banter, and they don’t stop until Evan Wolfe has waited too long to leave after the snowstorm warning and the road back to Portland, Oregon is closed. How can two people who hate each other survive in this kind of forced proximity? That’s a very good question, but you’ll have to pick up the book yourself to find out.
Lily Menon’s writing is tight and it shines here. In keeping with the romance author MC, the language is slightly more elevated and of wider variety than it often is in adult romance novels. However, the best part is the pitch perfect banter between Sophie and Evan—I could’ve listened to them talk for much longer if this was a longer novel and not a novella, but I wasn’t disappointed in the length. Menon has a way with tying up all the loose ends and ensuring that both Sophie and Evan see one another in ways that move beyond their preconceived ideas of who each other are like.
If you’re looking for a short, enemies to lovers, holiday romance told exclusively in the female MC’s POV, then pick up Booked for Christmas!
A cute holiday novella featuring a diverse cast of characters, funny banter, and an enemies-to-lovers trope. If you’re looking for a quick read to help you get into the holiday spirit, this is a great book for you!
I know it’s short, but I only have so many days of the year when reading Christmas books is as magical as it is right now. Also, I’m quickly learning that I really don’t like enemies to lovers romances, but especially at Christmas. The writing is also pretty meh. Time to move on!
This is a short Christmas read by Lily Menon ( Sandhya Menon). It will definitely get you into the holiday spirit with a boisterous holiday party, lots of snow, lots of spirits and signs. I am definitely a signs person, I loved Sophie! In my dating days, I was a disaster in the romantic area before I met my husband, so I can relate to her prior failures in that department (I really should write short stories of all the ridiculousness guys put me through, it's quite hilarious the excuses guys give for breaking up with you). I'm so silly I got full body chills for the sign at the end of the book lol. You got me!
I am a definite fan of enemies to lovers. These two characters only knew each other through their work from her fictional world she created and him writing negative reviews. And I think we all have seen those who don't relate to certain peoples works/books. So he doesn't relate to romance, he might not be the one to review them, lol. Through the few days alone together the years of knowledge he has of her work take on a different light and they both see each other differently. Sparks may fly and it doesn't hurt that they are snowed in with no chance of escape. But they may have never gotten to see each other's humanity otherwise. She was a silly romantic and he was her villain. But we all know the saying "You can't judge a book but its cover."
I was hoping for a little prologue with them a year later at the next Christmas, accidentally snowed in again. I def have a book hangover cause I was enjoying the two of them and would definitely read more of these two characters!!
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 - definite add to our must read for Christmas Romance, enemies to lovers, about books and the book world, diverse characters, steamy scenes
This is easily my favorite thing Sandhya/Lily Menon has written. Most of her works are very mediocre, but this opposites-attract, snowed in and stuck together for Christmas had tons of chemistry and great writing.
A fantastic pick for a holiday story that isn't overly Christmassy, especially because it follows a romance writer and a book critic who is known for cleverly trashing her work in his online column. The hook-up scene felt rushed and the ending was a bit cheesy, so it's not a full 5-stars, but considering this is a successful Christmas story I might as well count it as a top favorite—there aren't very many holiday books that are good enough to recommend.
This is a cute, sweet holiday novella set in a snowed in cottage. I loved Sophie and Wolfe’s banter and chemistry. I really enjoyed that going in they only knew each other through their writing. As they got to know each other in person their perceptions changed. Don't judge a person by their writing?
Going in I knew the story was short, but by the end the author left me wanting more. I will be definitely reading her next book.
Very sweet romance and Holiday charm. It was really interesting having a romance writer as the main character a book reviewer as her romantic interest.
Despite this being the first published text from Lily Menon, I am a longtime fan of hers through the works she penned as Sandhya Menon. So, when she announced she would be dropping this Christmas novella (even though it was October) I was so excited to purchase it and read. I was not disappointed.
Booked for Christmas may only be under 100 pages long, but it packs in a lot of depth, angst, and romance that has you quickly turning page to page, invested in the main character and her rival/love interest as they go from enemies-frenemies-lovers.
I really enjoyed how the two main characters felt distinguishable and fleshed out, with their own motivations, desires and problems. It was great to see them break down their own walls, and to see them let each other in. In such a short space of time, a well thought out ARC was penned.
The romance in this was lovely. I really enjoyed the angst, and the slowburn. Both characters were hilarious and had such chemistry between them.
Overall, this was incredibly enjoyable and I would not have minded if this was a fully fledged novel - however, it did work perfectly well in novella format!
Recommend if you want a romantic, Christmas-y read, with some steamy scenes!
I think I’ve read too much romance recently and need a change of pace. I wanted to like this more than I did. Maybe I’m just in a bad mood today. Idk. Like, I know it’s a Christmas novella, but it just felt too...contrived.
Contemplating a 2 star review because I really had to force myself to read the last 20 pages or so. We’ll see.
Booked for Christmas is about a writer and her harshest critic who end up snowed in together in a cabin. Will they fall in love??? Well, it is a Christmas rom com so yes, they probably will, but I love all the tropey goodness in this story. Enemies to lovers, snowed in, Christmas. Add in lots of sass and snarking and some good chemistry, and it's a fun little story.
Booked for Christmas by Lily Menon was a cute Christmas short story. Sophia Hart is a romance author and Evan Wolfe is her harshest critic. Evan shows up at her yearly Christmas party as a guest’s “plus one.” All the guests are surprised he is there. A storm blows in and Evan and Sophia are stuck in her cabin. I am sure you can quess the rest. Enjoy this quick story.
