USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
I love Scarlett Scott, I really do. Like. I really, love her. She takes tropes and then elevates them to completely outlandish melodrama and still makes it work. She has written every trope I hate and 90% of the time, I love them. She can write a whopper of a second-chance love story and I say that because I HATE second-chance love stories (why? Umm, because there is essentially nowhere to go in those stories [in my opinion]. They reunite, they rehash a bunch fo stuff, the end).
Not Scarlett Scott. She does rely on plot devices to get us through, but she does them very well. Here? In this story of perceived betrayal and second chances? I will admit I was disappointed. This might have been because I got hyped with the excerpts she released and the achey angsty perfection of Sidney and Julianna.... Or maybe it was because it was 300 pages of the same nasty arguments over and over again. And when I say nasty, I mean they were not nice. And not in an angsty love way, but in a cringey-cruel way. I don’t mean this harshly, but rather as an observation that genuinely surprised me, because Scott always strikes me as sensitive to modern relationship dynamic expectations... in other words, fetishizing emotional abuse doesn’t fly in HR anymore and her books never engage in harshness without a reason, and even then it is carefully done. That doesn’t apply here. The typical witty style I love from Scott also felt slightly lacking. So, all in all...this book surprised me.
Warning: ranting below.
Ugh, I just hate that I didn't enjoy this. I was skimming parts by about the 60% mark because it was the same conversations, the same internal dialogue and I never skim Scarlett Scott!
Example H: You are a conniving liar. Fuck. h: you are a conniving liar. Watch your language.
*One page later* (in the French narrator's voice from Spongebob, okay?)
H: You are a conniving liar. Fuck. h: you are a conniving liar. Watch your language.
Like URGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! SCARLETT. Lady Wallflower? Darling Duke? And like the best second chance romance she has ever done, ever, Nobody's Duke!?!??!??!?!??!??!??!?!?!? Even Julianna reflects on how annoying the circular arguments are... and yet...
I repeat: URGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! SCARLETT.
This could have been So. Good. There are so many Scarlett Scott-y things she could have done. So many things. I don’t understand!!!! Everything was there to make Sidney a redemption story. Everything was there to make Julianna dynamic and interesting instead of stagnant. Everything was there to make the secret baby-come-second chance perfect!!!! This just wasn’t the profanity filled, mean/rampantly lusting hero + vibrant wit and opulence or any of the rompy wonderfulness that is everything perfect about Scott's writing. There were even some really precious moments in this and that’s why I don’t think this deserves a total tongue lashing... nor a harshly low rating. I adore her books (we have established this). Sometimes she stumbles... and this was a stumble, and I am so sad about that.
I hold S.S's work on a bit of a pedastle because she makes me cry and laugh then jump up and down then want to wear a 1880s bustle and then also want to have crazy sex with my husband (sorry, to much?). *Groans in greediness* Why couldn't this be everything I wanted it to be!
Anyways...Whinging over. Read it anyways and make up your own mind, seriously! I probably will be in the minority and that is my fault. I will still always read her books, and the next book in her series. This just wasn’t quite up to my expectations. I am going to go wallow in some Lisa Kleypas now.
I’m a huge fan of Scott’s. I love the secret baby trope and second chance romance when it’s super angsty. I was not a fan of Julianna and her impulsiveness to jump to the worst conclusions about Sidney. Also, their two-year separation was all her fault for fleeing after a big misunderstanding. She was the one in the wrong.
It was a shame because I LOVE Scott’s earlier books. Her Lovestruck Lord and Sweet Scandal are my all-time faves. Scott’s writing style is always appreciated. This book delivered on the high melodrama too, but it just didn’t do it for me in the feels department. I prefer books where the H is in the wrong and must grovel. I wish the h would’ve had to grovel in this case! Instead she was cold and snarky as ever.
I skimmed a bit, I’m sad to say. I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the MC’s because Julianna was so sanctimonious and icy. She finally thawed, but it was after she had needlessly beaten poor Sidney down. I even skimmed the sex scenes prior to the resolution because I just wasn’t feeling the love. This is SUPER rare for me!

Sidney's soul-destroying anger Julianna’s quiet desperation All of it wrapped around a passion that could not be contained and a secret that needed to be told.
The passion and the hate The pain and the lust The passion and the healing The truth and the future The love…
Oh my, the love.
Another 5 star epic read from the talented Scarlett Scott.
3.5/5. A very young Julianna embarked on passionate, secret courtship with her best friend's brother, the rakish Viscount Shelbourne. Before they could make it official, she abruptly turned down his proposal and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to get away from him and what might have been. She's now back in London, trunks full of secrets. Misunderstandings and miscommunications plague their story. And a lot of anger and stewed resentment. I like angst but this dragged on a bit.
Wicked fun, steamy romance and tense, thrilling and satisfying storyline. Another fantastic book from Scarlett that will keep you glued to your kindle.
A series of misunderstandings and wrongly assumed situations set these two lovers on opposite sides of the world, only to return to the same city two years later and try to sort the mess, but this time there are bigger secrets and problems to solve.
‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder’, not sure if that’s true for our lovelorn couple, but let’s say it definitely doesn’t stop the passionate relationship from becoming explosive. Wonderful writing and a brilliant book .
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Second chance romances are tricky, one - because they have nowhere new to go and two - depends on why the need for a second chance? But this one, though unidirectional towards a HEA was gripping.
The Plot Lady Julianna is back in London after two years in NYC. Two years after she lost her innocence to Sidney Davenport, Lord Shelbourne. After she laughed in his face and rejected his marriage proposal. But this time Sidney is the one laughing at her marriage proposal because she is back with a small bundle of a secret and needs his help.
What I Liked - A lovers to enemies to lovers trope with a bundle of joy. Very few HR romances start with a kid already in place (that do not have a Governess trope). - Emotional depth & angst was very high in this book and I as a reader felt it all. The plot was slightly different from other second chancers, here the hero feels wronged & jilted. - It is surprisingly high on sarcastic & sardonic humour also on hurt quotient, but I was captivated by most of it. - Sidney's character arc is amazingly well developed, it comes full circle from love to hurt to hate to love again. - The flashbacks & excerpts from journals and the letters provided a great insight into the relationship between Julianna & Sidney.
What I did not like - It was too long, it would have worked wonders as a novella since the story did not have enough to credit it as a full-length novel. The argument between the main characters got cyclical & repetitive. - Instead of trying to solve the problem they were hellbent on hurting each other. Most of it, actually all of the problems would have been solved if they had just communicated with each other, which they did at 91% of the book, took too bloody long. - Julianna's character lacked depth, both emotional & rational. She had nothing going for her, her insistence on resisting got boring. - My biggest problem was that Sidney & Julianna's stories were running parallelly, their love felt forced with nothing to countenance it. I still have no idea why they loved each other.
But nevertheless it was gripping.
The Hero Oh, how does one not love Sidney? I wanted to hug him and tell him all would be well. I felt his hurt, his angst and anger too. His budding relationship with Emily was awe-worthy. His letters & journals broke my heart. He did everything right and all he wanted was his daughter & Julianna's answers & love. I hated that he had to be the one to make amends when the problem was predominantly Julianna. I mean talk about a broken hero done right.
The Idiot Heroine I take objection to call a presumptuous selfish bitch a heroine. She was bitchy even in their courtship. I get her parents' marriage did not set a great example but there is a limit to being cautious but this one was bordering on walled up. She was just clinging to her misconceptions and making hurtful decisions. You never keep a man from his daughter, that is mothering 101. Her rudeness did not do anyone any favours. She was trying to win and not solve the problem. If you claim to love someone then bloody do something about it. Julianna managed to inspire my ire, never thought I would hate her more than Callie from Lady Ruthless but hate her I did. Maybe she was just a teenager behaving like an immature teenager and I am being too harsh.
My Recommendation Though there were issues, I have still rated it 4 stars because I could not put it down. Just because you hate a character does not mean the book was bad, for I feel the writer has done a great job inciting such extreme emotions in the reader. On to the next one Lady Lawless!
4.5 Stars. I have to take a least .5 for all the cursing. To many curse words. Especially around a Baby.
Lady Julianna Somerset returns to London after a two year stay in America. She has come to ask her ex lover Viscount Sidney Shelbourne to marry her. She needs help in protecting there 16 month old daughter Emily.
Sidney is in shock to find out that he has a baby daughter. As soon as he meets Emily he know she is his. She has his green eyes, dark hair and his chin. He instantly falls in love with is baby daughter and she with him.
He marries Julianna and they start there tumultuous marriage with distrust and misunderstandings. But Emily holds them together.
There was a bit more angst in this story then I like. I also felt all the reminiscing into there past relationship chopped up the story. I would have like to have read more scenes with Sidney Julianna there baby Emily. Emily is written adorably!! I fell in love with the fictional Emily myself!!
The writing was excellent and the flow was seamless. Unfortunately I couldn’t bring myself to like the main characters. Sydney and Julianna were bitter and so distrustful. Their refusal to open their hearts did become repetitious and the misunderstanding dragged on forever. Their conflicts could be easily avoided if they communicated. When they decided to be open with each other, it was a little too late for me. By the end I didn't feel convinced of their supposed love for each other.
An angsty, yet powerful surprise baby. Relied too heavily on assumptions and misunderstanding for me but I still enjoy this author and I will keep going with this series.
2.5 stars. Needed a little more time in the oven. Could've been great treat
Scorchingly good sex scenes aside, Sheldon and Juliana's story was bit of a letdown. There were 8 or so chapters filled with internal dialogues that were horribly repetitive. Near end of book juicy background tidbits were thrown in. They were screaming out for further development. Or maybe the silent screams were mine. Either way, I can't help believing this story could've been great with a little more time and revision. Especially if readers were shown more of Sidney and Juliana original courtship instead of fed rehashed emotions throughout. Recommend speed reading through many middle chapters. Overall: 2.5 stars
I am 30% through this book and I want to throw my Kindle against the wall. Two years over a goddamn misunderstanding that could’ve been cleared up in five minutes. This is the most frustrating book I have ever read! This story could have been amazing! Every time Sydney brings up how Julannna denied his proposal, she just throws him a cruel insult instead of just explaining why she refused him! I hate books like this!

Lady Wicked is Book #4 in the Notorious Ladies of London And this is a hot 🔥💗💗🔥 series. These books are standalone reads, but so much better read in order. The heroines in these stories are independent and brave, the men are rakes and scroundrels, but they are amazing lovers! Its impossible for an incredibly talented authors books to get better, when the author, Scarlett Scott just does what comes natural to such an amazingly gifted author.
I’m so in love with Julianna and Sidney! But what a road they travel to get to their happily ever after. Viscount Shelbourne is Julianna’s best friend older handsome brother. She has had a crush on in but is hesitant due to his reputation. Lord Shelbourne is also attracted to the beautiful red headed Lady Julianna. On a week long house summer party, they experience love 💕 and a so much more. Unforeseen events come up ending the summer house party for him and his sister. This storyline is loaded with everything great, wonderful from Scarlett Scott ❤️🔥 Unfortunately for them, a series of confusion and miscommunication seperates them for two years. So much heartache for me as I was reading this book! Julianna’s mother is from NYC and considered royalty in the states. Unfortunately for Julianna and Sidney they’ve had dysfunctional parents. Two years later they are reunited but not in the way they would have wanted. Their is so much unsaid between, but slowly and very deliciously 🔥 everything will come together. In the meantime Lord Shelbourne has an adorable baby girl with Julianna. Her beautiful name is adorable and the scenes the author writes between father and daughter had me so emotional! Scarlett Scott writes with so much passion, emotions and attention to details, with very tastefully written love scenes. Another Great Read, with familiar, loving characters. Her books keeps you wanting Book #5 right now ❤️💗
One conversation would have cleared this up. There was really not enough conflict to create an entire book, so the H/h skirt around the issue of their Misunderstanding for the majority of the book. It is repetitive and excruciating.
“Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one!” – (John Keats). The writing of Keats plays a poignant role in this story, so I just had to share a quote from his writings that I think summarizes the inevitability of the lead characters in this story.
This is one of those books that will have you scolding the characters, mentally pleading with them to communicate with one another and get out of their own way. Lady Wicked is the 4th book in the ‘Notorious Ladies of London’ series by Scarlett Scott. They are a series of interconnected stand-alone novels. Reading this story about Julianna and Sidney was exquisite torture because I could not put it down once I started it - a happy problem for which I was prepared because all of this author’s books seem to have that effect. I’m not usually much of a fan of the secret baby/second chance trope combination because the wasted time in the character’s lives is always such a sad thing. In this story, the exquisite pain of that deprivation is acute, yet made compelling by the author’s skill. I’m not going to take your time detailing the plot of the book because the blurb and other reviews will have done so. I will say that I found the heroine to be very frustrating. Her own actions led to 2 years of turmoil and heartbreak for both main characters. She reacts impulsively to something she sees and quite literally flees the country, and although her youth and her own awful upbringing make her behavior much more understandable, it is still devastating. Sidney is such a good guy and so broken-hearted over Julianna that you want to be able to reach into the pages and console him. There is one time in the book where he should have spoken up and confronted Julianna, but instead he jumps to his own wrong conclusions and thereby contributes to their mutual misery. Overall, he is a wonderful hero in this story who never really gives up on love, and who proves himself to be a swoon-worthy father.
Emily, their year-old daughter, adds depth, sunshine and “awwww” moments to this love story. Julianna and Sidney have incredible, irresistible physical chemistry that neither of them can deny, and that lights up the pages of the book. Characters from other books in the series make appearances in this one, and I am already looking forward to reading more about others in this book, particularly Tilly and hopefully Northwich (though not together).
I loved Julianna and Sidney's story of love and second chances, it was also lovely to see that Helena and Gabe were as in love as ever. As well as Elijah, Jo and Macfie, with Elijah offering his sage advice abd observations.
Lady Julianna Somerset has loved Viscount Sidney Davenport Viscount Shelbourne her best friend's brother from the moment she met him. He was sophisticated, older and a rake she doubted very much that he knew she even existed. All this changed one fateful summer during a house party at Farnsworth Hall his ancestral home where an ever watchful Sidney chanced to encounter Julianna swimming in the lake. Julianna on realising she was no longer alone dove under the water and Sidney thinking she was drowning dove in to rescue her. Resulting in her rescue and a kiss that would change everything and lead to a secret courtship. Sidney loved Julianna and wanted to marry her, Julianna on the other hand was wary of his attentions due to all that she knew about him, but reluctantly agreed to the courtshop both were falling more and more in love with each other. Until news of his beloved Grandmother's last few hours reached them and the family ended the house party to rush to her side to say their final goodbyes. Sidney promised to call on Julianna once he returned to London. On his return to London he sought to end his liaison with his current mistress by way of a note and subsequent visit, she however had other ideas and surprised him with a call instead. On severing their ties and her departure Sidney remembered her parting gift of a pearl necklace and raced to give it to her as she sat in her barouche where in receipt of this gift she kisses him. Unbeknownst to either of them Julianna sees them as she rides past in her carriage, she is devastated and heartbroken at Sidney's betrayal and vows to never see him again. Sidney however decides to ask Julianna to marry him she tells him no in no uncertain terms making it clear to him that he was a mistake and that she wishes to experience the world and not be tied down to one man. They part broken-hearted, he to Cagney House and Julianna to New York where she discovers to late that she is carrying Sidney's baby. Two years go by before circumstances force Julianna and baby Emily to cross the Atlantic ocean once more to arrive one stormy night in Sidney's home where he drunkenly throws her out. Determined to talk to him and to get him to accept her bargain she tries again. It us during a second visit that Sidney discovers why Julianna is back in London. She needs to marry to gain her uncle's bequest and that he has a daughter. Sidney is outraged and furious that she hid his daughter from him and this anger and desire to protect and raise his daughter force him to agree to a marriage to the women he both loathes and desires in the same breath. They will marry he decrees and he will fabricate lies to ensure that Emily's reputation and future are secure and free from scandal. Julianna and Sidney marry and forced to endure the others presence in their home the only common ground between them is Emily and the simmering attraction and desire that lurks just below the surface. Julianna fights to keep the walls up around her heart as Sidney realises belatedly after a night of passion that she still holds his heart and that he has never stopped loving her that he must do something, but what he did not know. His best friend Northwich advises him to woo her back to him. So he tries first with dinner, billiards, breakfast and a gift that lays his heart at her door. However fate has other ideas in the form of his current mistress Charlotte who drunkenly takes umbrage at his note to belatedly terminate their liaison bringing back painful memories of that fatful morning that drove them apart. Sidney is aghast at this turn of events and Julianna's subsequent wish to leave, as she once again runs from him. Only this time she doesn't board a ship for pastures new she seeks solace in the comfort offered by her best friend Lady Helena Davenport who offers an insight into how her brother changed into the man she saw that first night at Cagney House to the man that he is now an man who is devoted to his family a man who.she believes loves her friend. Julianna is uncertain she has loved him so much for so long can she trust him with her heart again. On returning home hours later she decides to find out and realises on seeing Sidney with their daughter that she could never leave him. Sidney terrified that she will leave him promises to curb his vulgar tongue if she promises to never leave him. She tells him that she could never leave him. They have come through so much and their love though battered has remained strong and unbroken through all that fate has thrown at them to achieve their happy ending.

Lady Julianna Somerset is back in London after spending two years in New York. She has some unfinished business with Sidney, Lord Shelbourne. They had an affair two years ago but something happened and Julianna left for America. I did wonder why Julianna hadn’t explained things to Sidney before leaving but then I considered her age, she was just about eighteen, and she hadn’t a good example of marriage or love from her parents. Sidney’s parents, also, didn’t provide a good example of a loving marriage. Although, they both had feelings for each other, neither wanted to admit it. Circumstances require them to be together but will they ever swallow their pride and be truthful to each other? This was an engaging read with very likeable characters.
Heroine is very young when she meets and falls in love with older hero, they eventually have sex together and he proposes marriage. She laughs at him and refuses, then leaves London and goes to New York. Two years later she’s back to him and asks him to marry her, revealing he has a daughter. She left him because she saw him in kissing another woman, his mistress. He had just left her and that was a parting kiss she gave him. The heroine thought he was still seeing his mistress and had no intention to leave her, so she flew and kept the child from him. That was not very wise but she was really very young at the time. Anyway this man is no saint, he enjoyed himself very much during the two years they were apart, and still has a mistress when heroine is back, that eventually makes a scene with his wife in his house. I couldn’t get past this, and since he said he was so in love with her I think he at least could have waited a little longer before jumping in bed with so many women. No sorry this was not for me, even if I love SS and her books.
Some novellas I wished to be a full novel. This one, I wished it just a novella with all the repetition and inner dialogues. I love Emily, but then I want to knock some senses to the stupid heroine. She's a selfish idiot
Lady Julianna Somerset lost her innocence to her best friend’s brother. But when he broke her heart, she fled London to heal her wounded pride. A desperate change in circumstance has forced her to return. Sidney, Lord Shelbourne has always wanted one woman at his side and in his bed. The only problem? Sidney has not forgiven Julianna for spurning him or for the shocking secret she has been keeping. Now that she needs his aid, he has a plan. Revenge will be his, and so will she. This is the fourth book in this brilliant series, it can be read on its own, but seriously the series deserves reading from the start. An engrossing read of misunderstandings, wrong assumptions. The verbal bantering was superb & all the time this lovely couple were fighting their feelings. Julianna fled to New York when she witnessed what she thought was Sidney’s betrayal. Sidney was left confused & heart broken when Julianna left not knowing what he’d done to make her leave. If only they’d talked – a phrase I repeatedly said throughout the book. Their road to a HEA was littered with obstacles but it made for a darned good read My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Echoing what another reviewer said, I love Scarlett Scott, she's a great writer but this wasn't her best. The misunderstanding that led to the years-long separation wasn't high stakes enough. It was sort of stupid and took way too long to clear up.
Also, the Hero can NOT go around the entire book with a cockstand. I have noticed this has happened in a couple of her books and it's almost like the erect penis becomes a character of its own - see her last League of Dukes book. I would encourage Scarlett to do a word count of how many times she uses the words to indicate an erection. Spoiler alert - it's a lot! But it's made the last couple of books where this has happened difficult for me to get through. She doesn't need it. She's pretty great at crafting stories, but when it becomes a part of the whole Hero's character, it becomes tedious.
I am a huge Scott fan and have begun the new Winter book as I type. This is the only one I have not rated highly. Usually I am entranced by the end of chapter one. With this one, I was not. I disliked both of the main characters. I do not like heroines who are Too Stupid to Live and the hero was dissolute. Both of them redeem themselves by the HEA but nevertheless, this one is not on the level of the previous books in the Notorious Ladies of London series.
A pretty ok read. I did not like the small lack of communication having such terrible consequences. It seemed slightly shallow on Juliannes part at times. But definitely well written. Plot 6.5(1-10) steaminess 7.5(1-10)
Review of Lady Wicked, by Scarlett Scott. 5 stars. Scarlett Scott never disappoints. She has very quickly become an auto-buy author for me. Her books aren't one I read while on the subway or watching the kids play. Her books are the ones I wait for the kids to go to bed and curl up in front of the fireplace when the house is quiet because I don't want to miss a thing.
This is the fourth book in the Notorious Ladies of London series, and is the story of Lady Juliana Somerset and Sidney, Viscount Shelbourne. These are two complex characters who burn for each other in a way that the heat leaps off the page. They have a past together and both of them need to overcome what they have done to each other in the past to forgive. From their first meeting after two years, you can see the sparks flying because it is written so eloquently and vividly. What I also loved is that we were able to revisit some of our favorite characters throughout the series and get a glimpse at what they have been up to since we last saw them.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves the following tropes: best friend's brother, secret baby, second chance.
Thank you to Scarlett Scott for an ARC of this book. This is my honest review.
Amazing story of a very long hard-earned second chance of love. Lady Julianna Somerset loved Sidney, Lord Shelbourne, but his betrayal was too much to bear, so she ran to America to get as far from him as she could. Sidney was heartbroken when Julianna left him and ran, and has spent the last two years inside a bottle of spirits. When she returns they have a second chance, but the secrets and bitterness between them may be too much. Couldn't help but feel heartbroken for these characters from the start, but glad I went on the roller coaster ride with them. Highly recommend.
What a delightful read! Scarlett NEVER ceases to amaze me with her stories and this one is no exception.. A misunderstanding between both of the characters leads to animosity between them.. They can't deny the passion for each other regardless of how hard they try. They can't fight the love between each other.. Love wins again. I laughed I cried and laughed some more.. I fell in love with the characters instantly and I know other people will too!! I look forward to the next book!
Hello, my name is Laura, and my toxic trait is that I not-so-secretly love the misunderstanding trope. I will not apologize for this obvious character failing. I will make absolutely no efforts to change. And because of that, I absolutely loved this book. This was fantastic. No one talk to each other, ever. Make absurd assumptions. Be unbelievably stupid. And then be mad about it. And kiss. More kissing. All the kissing, really.
The kissing here was very good, and angst-filled. I could not get enough of it.
Romance novels are a breeze to read. This one was good- I liked the concept and characters. I will say it had the lamest (and frankly kinda gross) contrivance to get the main characters in the same bedroom.
