This book is for the bamboo earrings, four-finger rings and gold chains… For the around the way girl rolling her neck with an attitude, and for the dope boys using pagers and payphones.
This book is for everyone who lived, loved, and died in the ’80s. With the explosion of hip-hop, crack, and timeless fashion, the eighties were not only an era but a statement. A statement that resonated with people from all walks of life. If ever there was a time to be alive, the eighties were it. It was the definition of what the kids today call “lit.” The sweaty basement parties, long summer nights on the Ave., to back when you just had to like a guy enough to give him some. The good ole days…relive every moment of it in We Made Love In the ‘80s.

There's NOTHING worse than a rushed ending. It took me a few days to get into this book. That in itself is odd considering I can go through a book in a day. Anywho, I felt like it drug along way more than it needed to but one thing I liked was the growth of all the ladies. I really dread reading about women with no goals in life other than being 'kept.' That said, I feel like there were far too many gaps in the story for it to have simply ended the way it did. The author had a really good opportunity with this storyline. So, unless there's more to come (I haven't checked her full catalog) she really dropped the ball.
Over the years, Arabia has grown tremendously as a writer and has earned a spot in my library under Forever Fave with her previous book G Code. When she announced this book, I waited on pins and needles for what felt like FOR-EV-VAH but I know anything worth having is worth waiting for. So I was patient, barely, but patient nonetheless.
AND BAYBEE… SHE DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
Lets start with the cover! If standing a part from the crowd was the goal, the mark was definitely hit. The brightness of the sky mixed with the spray paint of part of the title blend perfectly. The graffiti filled wall behind the fire hydrant on the corner instantly took me to the summers of the 80’s and 90’s which were the stuff movies are made of.
Once you get inside the pages, its like a stepping off a time machine into the land of payphones, pagers, gold ropes, door knockers, pictures from the camera man in the club and asymmetric hairstyles that were sooooo fly! And the men! Oh my gawd the men! An era of men who hustled hard and loved even harder.
When I first met Zoo, the character Janae had me looking at them like something was funky because she was not for their mess. They came in loud, arrogant and cocky. Poot Butt dudes made love in the 80’s as well so I really thought this was a slew of them. I was just as wrong as Janae! From the moment Tony pulled up on Lynette at school I was smitten with him. Stacks and Sam had some dopeness to them as well that gave them a place in my heart BUT Stacks made a few moves that I aint like at all! Now Sam… That was just a different kind of dude right there. The kind you can’t help but salute.
When it comes to the lady’s of Zoo, I liked Faith the most. She was cool from the beginning but when her and Stacks backstory came out I loved her! I wish there would have been more about my namesake (Keisha) because you could see her dopeness but it was kinda overshadowed by the louder characters in the room. Lynette and Janae were my least favorite in that order for various reasons that would have me writing a whole book just to tell you why I aint EVEN like them!
This is definitely one that will stand the test of time. As the last line in the book says, Their names and their legacy will live forever.
This being a new to me author and the fact that I love the cover of this book is what had me interested in reading. Very well written, great storyline and character development. Just knowing this book is set in the 80's definitely had my attention. The author did a great job of giving us that 80's vibe of friendship, brotherhood, and the ups and downs of relationships with this crew. I instantly fell in love with these characters because it was reminiscent of that time transitioning from your late teenage years into early adulthood and trying to do and get things for yourself. Just when things seemed to be looking up for the crew that ending shocked me. I would love to read an update on the ladies as they begin life during the 90s. Overall great read I highly recommend reading.
This book was everything. Literally a mental passport to the 80's Arabia vividly painted a picture of the flamboyant lifestyle we would have expected in the 80s starting with the Hip Hop culture and Loud motorbikes to the cocky but lovable characters that you can't stop smiling at. It's the story of three friends who just want their piece of the pie and end up getting so much more. This book kept you on the edge of your seat to the plot twisting unpredictable end. This book was a refreshing change a scenery. I look forward 2 reading more from this author.
I expected the typical boy meets girl, fall in love, hustle cheat fall apart with a scheming sister girl in the mix. I was completely wrong. This well written story has A1 character development. I had a hard time picking a book bae and a favorite couple. I had hoped for a fairy tale ending but Arabia had better plans in store more true to life. Not my first read by this author definitely not my last. Pick this book up you won't be disappointed.
So I don't even know where to start. When I say I loved everything about this book I truly mean it. Faith is my main I loved her period. I won't spoil it for anyone just know your in for a he'll of a ride with this crew. Welcome to the Zoo!!!!!!
I hope it's a part 2. It had a few errors but overall you can feel this story with ever page turn. The zoo crew gave everything you needed in a old school read. I love this story and pray we see more from the zoo crew.
At first i thought it was so same old same old but I appreciate that it wasn’t. I also appreciate growth of characters and accountability so I throughly enjoyed this read. I do want a follow up though
I want more from the Zoo Crew, excellent read. I grew up in this time and very accurate accounts. I would love to see what the Zoo crew did and how they maintained after the sentencing
A cute love story. I loved the girls loyalty to each other as well as the Zoo crew. Toward the end I was shocked and pissed but hey, that’s life. Nice read.
I of course enjoyed the eighties vibe to this book. The story and characters were developed well. I absolutely loved how things ended, it was quite fitting.
This was my first read by Arabia and it won’t be my last. The ending was extremely surprising and left me hoping that there will definitely be a follow up on The Zoo Crew.
This book was a good read I love how she set the scene it was well put together and I could really visualize it it took me back to the '80s in the movie Brown sugar
I enjoyed the book, but I felt like it took a while to get into the juicy parts. I liked the growth of the ladies but how is every male character low key abusive?
