This special collection compiles five one-shots focusing on different members of Angel's supporting cast, each from a different creative team. Peter David and Nicoloa Scott focus on Illyria. Dan Jolly and Mark Pennington handle Gunn, Scott Tipton and Mike Norton feature Wesley. Jeff Mariotte and David Messina present Doyle. And Jay Faerber and Bob Gill offer up a tale of Conner.
Peter Allen David, often abbreviated PAD, was an American writer of comic books, novels, television, films, and video games. His notable comic book work includes an award-winning 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk, as well as runs on Aquaman, Young Justice, SpyBoy, Supergirl, Fallen Angel, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Captain Marvel, and X-Factor. His Star Trek work included comic books and novels such as the New Frontier book series. His other novels included film adaptations, media tie-ins, and original works, such as the Apropos of Nothing and Knight Life series. His television work includes series such as Babylon 5, Young Justice, Ben 10: Alien Force and Nickelodeon's Space Cases, which he co-created with Bill Mumy. David often jokingly described his occupation as "Writer of Stuff", and he was noted for his prolific writing, characterized by its mingling of real-world issues with humor and references to popular culture, as well as elements of metafiction and self-reference. David earned multiple awards for his work, including a 1992 Eisner Award, a 1993 Wizard Fan Award, a 1996 Haxtur Award, a 2007 Julie Award and a 2011 GLAAD Media Award.
This is a great collection of one shots focused on individual characters. I love that Doyle was included! I only wish there were more covering other characters.
I am going back and picking up old angel comics that aren't in my collection and I just got this one. it's basically five stories set in the latter days of angel the tv show, one about each of five characters - wesley, illyria, gunn, doyle, and connor. I liked the illyria one the best. none of them were super surprising. always happy to see doyle.
Some very good standalone stories involving each of the characters from the television series. If you enjoyed the characters, you'll enjoy these stories.
2 stars. This wasn't great. Though I did appreciate Illyria and Wesley's stories. Doyle's was also a nice insight into his character before the show. The art for Connor's story was appalling and I didn't really care for Gunn's.
Best part? Doyle. By far. Maybe not story wise. Maybe not character wise. Maybe not artwork wise. Maybe not writing wise. But, really, who doesn't miss Doyle?
