Very Short Introductions #048

Rousseau: A Very Short Introduction

Rate this book
One of the most profound thinkers of modern history, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) was a central figure of the European Enlightenment. He was also its most formidable critic, condemning the political, economic, theological, and sexual trappings of civilization along lines that would excite the enthusiasm of romantic individualists and radical revolutionaries alike. In this study of Rousseau's life and works, Robert Wolker shows how his philosophy of history, his theories of music and politics, his fiction, educational, and religious writings, and even his botany, were all inspired by revolutionary ideals of mankind's self-realization in a condition of unfettered freedom. He explains how, in regressing to classical republicanism, ancient mythology, direct communication with God, and solitude, Rousseau anticipated some post-modernist rejections of the Enlightenment as well.

I believe that the capacity of an introductory book to impress a reader is directly proportional to the reader’s lack of initial knowledge about the subject matter.

That said, I felt this was an impressive piece of scholarship. Wokler comprehensively draws up all the major contributions to the thought of Rousseau in his treatment of Rousseau’s intellectual development against the background of the enlightenment. Much space is given to explaining the associations, and repartees present in his works, thus providing us an unravelling of the differences between the principal antagonists. For a philosopher whose majority of works are in response to others or drawing so heavily on others, an introduction had to draw out all these connections, without getting too imposing in the process. Wokler manages that quite finely and leaves us with a wonderful picture of the intellectual atmosphere in which Rousseau was fermented. One of the best VSIs I have yet read.

Rousseau was an influential 18th century philosopher. Having read The Social Contract, I wanted to read more about him. So, I came across with this book by R. Wokler. It was fascinating to learn and understand the ideas of Rousseau. It's an interesting book. If you don't want to read this book, you will enjoy reading his quotes.

It gave no introduction to any of his works, titles were thrown in at random times and it was difficult to know which of his works talked about what. To be quite honest I did not care that much about his thoughts - they were constantly contridicting and very confusing.

A really excellent summary of Rousseau's works and the development of his thought. Ideal for a beginner or someone wanting to refresh his/her memory.

This is a very good summary of Rousseau, but not a good introduction. This book does a wonderful job of splicing works and identifying sources to present Rousseau's corpus as a cogent whole, but that work is the end of scholarship. I would not assign this to an undergraduate course for fear that it would promote lazy readings of the actual text, which this book does more to explain than introduce.

Apart from use in the classroom, my only other criticism of the book is that the last chapter is hodge-podge and the final sentence is contrived. I think both of these problems stem from the book's format of summarizing Rousseau's thought as a whole and being left with a couple oddballs at the end, rather than merely introducing the works/principle thoughts and leaving the reader the work of seeing the whole.

“...music transports the eye inside the ear, and depicts even objects which are invisible, like night, sleep, solitude and silence, noise sometimes producing the effect of perfect tranquility and silence the effect of noise...”

While finishing this book today, I began it probably over a year ago so I can’t properly comment on it as a whole. However, from my finishing it, skimming what had been read briefly and recollection, I would say this is the best of the Very Short Introduction series that I have read. Wokler does a remarkable job simply presenting, not editorializing, the thought of Rousseau. He presents an introduction to Rousseau’s entire catalogue, emphasizing that which is most important but not neglecting that which is lesser known.

Rousseau is and remains one of my favourite thinkers ever. Both he and Proudhon do a remarkable job setting the basis for my own political philosophy - Proudhon highlights the philosophical deficiencies of property and capitalism, whereas Rousseau highlights the spiritual deficiencies. While it is important to follow the path that Reason illuminates, equally important is to live a life worth living, a life full of meaning and enjoyment. Rousseau, while not devoid of philosophical rigour, is certainly more polemical than most thinkers. However, this polemicaliuty serves his purposes beautifully as he seeks to show not just where reason leads us, but where, as humans, we ought to go in order to flourish as humans.

Rousseau thought has had a major impact on the enlightenment era. Robert Wokler has written a fine introduction to the thoughts of Rousseau. Here are some of the highlights from the book. The creator of the Cosmos is basically good but evil exist in the hearts of men and mankind is depraved. The fall of man is caused by inequality and private property. Morality does not stem from human nature but from man's estrangement from nature. Everything is good from the creator but depraved from the hand of man.

While discussing the role of government, liberty and justice should be the main principles that the state follows. The less government that people experience, the more sovereignty they have. Rousseau condemned Christianity for it leads to totalitarianism and dogma. He believed that mankind should commune with nature. Rousseau also made contributions to music and botany which is the study of plants.

The book is nice and short and it covers the philosophy and life of Rousseau. I highly recommend the book.

This was not my First Introduction to Rousseau and his philosophy.

I do like the way the book is written and the way it is phrased. But you had to know what the central logical structure was, to be able to follow and understand it, which is not right for the audience.

The content pertaining to the philosophy of Rousseau itself was great, but the author didn’t need to try to refute the sexism claim against Rousseau, because firstly he didn’t do it well at all (he missed entirely) and secondly there is no need for refusal because he is explaining the philosophy, there is no need for him to explain to the reader his opinion of the content.

So, good book, but very wordy and some unnecessary content in one section.

This is the second book I have read in the "A Very Short Introduction..." series. These are good books, and offer a lot of information, but they are a bit dry. You can't help though to glean great insights into the subject matter and they are helpful in interpreting ideas and concepts from other time, comparing and contrasting other ideas from the subject matter's peers (such as Locke, Montesquieu, and Voltaire, etc regarding Rousseau in this case).

Jean-Jacques Rousseau
I read to Locke, Hoppes, Bentham, Descartes, Voltaire and it remains Rousseau's writing in the Social Contract is my favorite.
The Book gives a VSI to his life and discourses, that I intend to read one day, it was short, few surprises in his life as a man here and there, but I think it needed more from Robert Wokler to make it more interesting.
Still a good book. And in my opinion The Social Contract is a must read!

I don’t have any history with Rousseau to comment on the accuracy of the book so I will assume it is perfect. Regardless of the accuracy, this is one of the most bizarrely written books I’ve ever read. The sentences last forever, as in half a page. It’s ridiculous, it is also a painfully repetitive book both in content and language, “no other philosopher was more influential” must have been said 10 times lol. Still a good introduction to rousseau and very interesting

Full disclosure: my interest here is his work on political philosophy, and I found this to be an excellent introduction. I hope it makes reading his actual works easier to understand. Drags a bit once he gets to Heloise, music and botany.

Learn grammar, you moron. It is the worst style I have ever read. If this moron learnt how to write well without unnecessary words for the next, fully revised edition, the length of the book would be about a half of that of the current edition. JUST SAY WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY WITHOUT INSERTING UNNECESSARY INFORMATION EACH FUCKING TIME.

Terrible style. Why do you want to put so many unnecessary adverbs and adjectives? A typical case of those academics who think that doing something the masses do not do should give them authority.
