This review is for The Highlander’s Christmas Lassie only.
Malcolm Innes, Laird of Dun Carron, has searched for Rhona Macleod and their son for almost 18 years. Responding to a tip from one of his friends, he finds himself in Muirburgh, Scotland on Christmas Eve in the middle of an impending snowstorm. When the door of the farmhouse opens, Malcolm looks into the face of a 17-year old he immediately knows is his son. The reception is wonderful...until Rhona sees him. Her reaction is colder than the storm.
This was a perfect Christmas story! Malcolm’s reunion with the only woman he’s ever loved wasn’t quite what he hoped for and his effort to win Rhona back was the gift I needed. In this gem of a short story, I got to see why they both fell in love with each other those many years ago, felt the pain and agony of what separated them and experienced the joy of the reconciliation. I actually hated seeing the story end. And, having a beautiful epilogue wrapped it up so very nicely. This is my first holiday story of the season and it’s off to a great start.

I was granted 4 advance copies, bellow are my true and unbiased opinion.
𝗥𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗲 by 𝗦𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗻 When society peacock Lord Harry Steele is thrown out of home on Christmas Eve, he not only misses out on a sumptuous Christmas dinner, but he is forced to quickly find a way to make money. He hits upon a brilliant idea. Instead of creating scandals, he will get paid to manage them. A desperate Alice North seeks Harry’s help to rid her of a fortune hunting scoundrel. In Harry she discovers a handsome, yet complex man, who sets her blood on fire. Harry in turn is drawn to Alice. A steamy secret affair ignites between them. But, will Alice’s heart be the ultimate price she has to pay for engaging the services of a Rogue for Hire?
𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 Will his line of business kill their burgeoning romance in its nest ...
What a fun read it was, I wonder if it is the first in a new series. I loved the group of misfits Harry and his friends are. Harry once without fonds had to find a way to sustain himself, and he uses his talent at meddling, at disguising in plain light to sell his services as a scandal eraser. He is fun and full of humour. At time, extravagant and excessive. Alice wants the best for her sister, and it is removing the fortune hunter of the equation. Thus her need of Harry’s services. At time, when unsure of herself, I found her a bit cruel with Harry, reporting her ire on him because she misunderstood his words. It is a playful read with a great group of friends, witty banters and a surprising second romance. 4,5 stars
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲 by 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗩. 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 Darkly handsome Ludo – universally known as Lascivious Lord Courtney – is the wickedest rake in Christendom. With a reputation that makes nice young ladies swoon, he is just not the marrying kind. Unwitting wallflower Felicity Bunting is only trying to protect a friend when she finds herself in a compromising situation with this lusty lord. She might not have meant to do it, but Bunty just accidentally trapped Lord Courtney into marriage. Neither of them is what the other ever expected to have, but perhaps they might be all they ever wanted.
𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 Will their marriage turn better than everyone could have expected...
Oh how I love Ludo, he is far away from what the scandal sheets portrayed. He is a young man who had been robbed of any care and love as a child, bullied for his parentage, denied what he loved to do and finally disinherited. Thus he became the Coutney black sheep. A nickname that follows his every step, why he could only admire Felicity from afar, feeling unworthy of her and by living in the fringes of society, he will never be good enough. Felicity has heard all life she was too fat, tall, too much. So much, she accepts it as her personal definition, whom she is for her peers. Until everything is turned upside down and she is engaged with the Wicked of the Wicked. But this life turning event is also a revelation, it will be life changing for them both. Each will draw strength from the other, as they recognize a companion soul, they see victim when there is one. Mrs Leech paint a beautiful tale of finding one’s strength through love, and as they began little with few to nothing, love is the wealth of the heart. 5 stars
𝗔 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 by 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗻 Lady Lauren Kendall is positive she’ll never marry. Being betrayed by the man you love hardens a woman’s heart. But forgetting her wicked fiancé is not that easy. Especially when his kisses are hot enough to melt the winter snow. Theodore Hawthorne cannot forget the woman who should have been his wife. Forced together at a country house Christmas party, the fire between them is clearly undiminished. Determined to win Lauren back, Theodore sets a course of tender seduction. One thing is certain. By the stroke of midnight on Christmas Day, there will either be a scandal to resolve or a wedding to celebrate.
𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
I feel in love with Mrs Moran’s writing talent while reading The Untamed Duke, it was hilarious and moving, everything I love in an historical romance. Here it was such a different tale, but I loved every pages of it. A man determined to win back the woman he loves because of others’ interférences and his own cowardice. I loved Theodore, he owns his mistakes, and wants to make things right. He is determined to get his betrothed back, despite everything she might think about him, he loves her and can’t conceive a life without her. Lauren was sadly mislead by her family, so when she learned the truth, she gave no thoughts août Theodore’s feelings. She plainly ended their engagement, never giving him the time to explain. Her stubbornness nearly robbed her of the man destined for her. She is lucky he is no ordinary man, he is a man on a quest, and conquer her heart he will. A charming second chance tale. 4.5 stars
𝗔 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 by 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗺 As the daughter of England’s spymaster, Miss Victoria Hawkins is no stranger to secrets. Her biggest secret is the tender feelings she holds for Thomas Garrick, her father’s personal guard. As the pressure to choose a husband at an upcoming Christmas house party mounts, Victoria grows desperate. When circumstances trap them together in a cottage with a single bed and a bottle of brandy, her infatuation with the gruff Garrick might cause the scandal of the season…and give Victoria exactly what she wishes for this Christmas. A secret passion is revealed when a spymaster’s daughter and the man pledged to protect her are forced to shelter for the night in a cottage—with one bed.

Will their différence keep them apart...
Oh my! I just loved this story, those two fated soulmates finding the strength to thwart society’s dictates to follow their heart. Garrick is a good man, he lost everything as a child and began anew more than once. He always has a thing for his employer’s daughter, but he is just an lowly orphan who was given a second chance. He deals with danger and brutes on a daily basis, his life is in the shadows, Victoria is his breath of fresh air even if it is only from afar. She is his one and only. Despite his feelings, he does not see a future together. Victoria is feisty young woman, in love with a man her mother would probably never deem right. Yet, in spite of her feelings for him, she is ready to burry her sentiments for a different future, as it seems too many difficulties lie between them and happiness. I just loved this sensual tale of doomed lovers, doomed until they strengthen their core to go for what they want. 5 stars
Twelve scandalous novellas, ideal for warming you on cold days, they are all different from each other but the ones I’ve read so far have been well written hot page turners
Rogue for Hire - by Sasha Cottman 5 Stars When Lord Harry Steele is disowned & thrown out by his father, a couple of days before Christmas, he has to find a way of earning his living. Together with some friends they have founded the RR Coaching Company which is a front for lots of less than legal activities but Harry uses his own scandalous persona to help others managing scandals. Alice North is desperate to rid her sister Prudence of a fortune hunter & turns to Harry. A well written page turning novella that I read in a sitting, strong characters & a very good pace made for a lovely read. I loved Harry & some of his outfits had me laughing out loud, I loved how the attraction between the pair grew & they saw beneath their facades. I’d love for the other Rogues of the Road to have their stories too.
The Lady's Guide to Scandal - by Emmanuelle de Maupassant 5 Stars Ethan Burnell is an explorer who has just returned from the jungles of Mexico & is preparing for an exhibition of some of his finds at the British Museum when he’s held up by a tape measure wielding woman, who thinks he’s a thief. Cornelia Mortmain’s name's mired in scandals not of her making but mud sticks, she a volunteer worker at the museum, when she sneaks in to the room housing the latest exhibition she didn’t expect to find a thief. A fun, entertaining well written story think of Indiana Jones at a Downton Abbey house party wearing Hessians - I just loved it, it was a longer read than the other novellas so I ended up reading into the small hours to finish it. I loved both Ethan & Cornelia, their attraction just grew & grew, there were also hilarious elderly aunts & an inquisitive dog & a marchioness with a wonderful vocabulary. An engrossing, captivating read
A Scandalous Secret - by Laura Trentham 5 Stars As the daughter of England’s spymaster, Miss Victoria Hawkins is no stranger to secrets. Her biggest secret is the tender feelings she holds for Thomas Garrick, her father’s personal guard. As the pressure to choose a husband at an upcoming Christmas house party mounts, then Victoria is almost kidnapped & she finds herself in a cottage with a single bed, a bottle of brandy & Thomas. This beautifully written novella ticked all the boxes for me spies, attempted abductions, class inequality & unrequited love. Another novella that I read in a sitting it was just too good to put down
Duncan’s Christmas Ellie St Clair 5 Stars Duncan McDougall is on a mission to reclaim his betrothed Mary and leave London before the beginning of the blasted English Christmas. Though the woman he captures that freezing winter night is not the woman he intended to nab, she just may be the one intended for him. Jane has travelled to London to help her sister Mary who is having a difficult pregnancy she didn’t expect to be grabbed by a large highlander. Oh what a treat this was, the story of Duncan & Jane parents of the siblings featured in the Victorian Highlanders series. Duncan & Jane were like chalk & cheese but together sparks flew, I loved Duncan who didn’t understand the English Christmas celebrations but he did begin to embrace them, Jane was a very caring sister, however the attraction between the pair was electric. A lovely novella which I read in a sitting
A Scandal Before Christmas - by April Moran 4.5 Stars Lady Lauren Kendall was engaged to Theodore Hawthorne but then his father died & then her father died & she found out her wealthy father had basically sold her & so feeling betrayed she broke the engagement. Her mourning period is at an end so she’s going to spend time at a house party only to find Theo is there too. Theo has always loved Lauren & with the help of mistletoe is determined to win her back. A new author to me & I loved the second chance romance, Lauren & Theo were perfect for each other but although she still loved him & their attraction sizzled, he had to work hard to win her. The pace flowed effortlessly & the characters were well portrayed, another captivating read which I read in a sitting
Her Virgin Duke - by Nicola Davidson 5 Stars Bennett Innsworth, Duke of Tunbury is stuffy, awkward & at twenty five is still a virgin, society has even nicknamed him Humdrum Tun. He loses a wager to his horrid cousin & he must spend an evening at Delilah’s Temple, London’s most hedonistic pleasure club. Delilah Forbes is an astute business woman & has built her club into being sought after but she is very picky who she allows to be a member. When the pair meet sparks fly. Another sizzling novella that I read in a sitting, I loved Ben who had been a Duke for a decade & although his trustees had helped with the running of the Dukedom they’d instilled in him the belief that he should be above reproach, his meeting with Delilah turned everything on its head. Delilah is strong, feisty & falls hard & fast for Ben. I loved that they fell for each other both inside & outside of the bedroom. Ben was definitely a very fast learner
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Have Yourself A Merry Little Scandal (The Christmas Courtesan), by Victoria Vale. I loved this short holiday romantic love story. Victoria had me hooked to the story from the moment Roger came on scene. Whew! Man did he have swagger as I imagined him while reading this story. Talk about hot! I need to contain myself. Victoria, you have a way of telling a story that had me panting and wanting more. Your writing is easy to read, which I love. This romance story is definitely a page turner. The plot to the story is a good choice. The drama Victoria wrote between Roger and Miranda had me begging for more. Victoria definitely has talent at catching her readers attention from the way she writes. Let’s not forget the sex scenes are so s-t-e-a-m-y. These scenes are written so well, so much so that the writer didn’t disappoint her readers. I was so deep into this story that I couldn’t put it down until the end. I was rooting for Roger to get his woman and Miranda to get lost in the love that Roger has showered her with. I recommend reading this very sweet romantic love story. Until next time my my fellow readers... read on!
The Highlander’s Christmas Lassie, by Anna Campbell, read like a love letter to two souls who spent years searching for one another. This story looked back on Malcolm and Rhonda’s lives of what they suffered and endured by their parents irresistible part in planning their children’s lives. I like how Malcolm didn’t give up hope in finding his love and his child. Rhonda, who still held resentment opened up to her mind for the sake of her son Patrick. I love how the two sat down and listened to each other and discussed what was best for Patrick. This is a short sweet read. This is a good love story to read over the holidays.
A beautiful Christmas reunion for a couple who have been separated for 20 years. This book encapsulated the whole sense of the season for me. Family and happiness.
The two have moved on with their lives, his has been lonely, missing his childhood sweetheart. Hers has been an experience, a son, stage career, and a marriage.
But they were always meant to be together and the love and passion is always their between them. Anna has a beautiful way with words and that makes this book a tender and poignant one.
Enjoyable and entertaining, with a beautifully soft and snowy centre.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review.
THE CHRISTMAS ROSE by Emma V. Leech - Lord Ludovic "Ludo" Courtenay, youngest son of the Marquess of Farringdon. Lud was also a bastard son as his mother had an affair with an Italian count but her husband, the Marquess, agreed to accept the boy in the Courtenay - but after his mother died, the marquess disinherited him & threw him from the house. Now Ludo has a reputation as a wicked rake & society still shuns him because of his parentage. Felicity "Bunty" Bunting is five and twenty, never been courted, and has heard her entire life that she is too tall, too plump, & more. Tonight, Bunty, is attending a ball and overhears plans of trying to catch a lord in a compromising position & it so happens he is a friend of Bunty's - so she warns him but in the process of saving him, she puts herself in a compromising position with none other than, Ludo, who is not a man made for marriage. Are all the gossips sheets wrong about him, can he see past all her faults - this is a lovely, romantic story with couple that you root for from the beginning as they both need the other one.
ROGUE FOR HIRE by Sasha Cottman - Lord Harry Steele is the handsome, fourth son of the Duke of Redditch & has been unceremoniously banned from the household & cut off without a penny to make his own way in life. That was eleven months ago, he & his friends had since found ways to make money - mostly not legal. Harry's claim to fame, is being society's peacock (oh, the clothes he shows up in are over the top) & he has created more scandals than you can count so, he decides instead of creating scandals, he will get paid to manage them. This is how he meets Miss Alice North, who is the eldest daughter of a very successful & wealthy tradesman. She hires Harry to rid her family of the rogue who is only after her younger sister's dowry. Harry & Alice are drawn to each other from the beginning & the fun adventure is so entertaining. Will Alice rue the day she paid the services of a Rogue for Hire? I highly recommend this book - it really is wonderful!
DUNCAN'S CHRISTMAS by Ellie St. Clair - This was the perfect holiday story that left you feeling very happy! Ms. St. Clair has given us a wonderful story with a handsome, future Scottish laird & a daughter of a Scottish doctor who has learned to be a healer. Duncan & Jane are blindsided when they find love together - it's a fun & humorous read with great family members, a sister giving birth, bungled kidnapping, & Scots in England as guests who celebrate Christmas. I laughed, shed a few tears a couple of times - you will love it!
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of the books I reviewed in this anthology & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Scandals of Note! I have read a few of the books in this Anthology and the following are my reviews of them:
**The Courtship Caper - Beverley Oakley What became very clear to me on reading this book as that if you tend to eavesdrop then you mustn't expect to be made happy by what you hear, for it may not always be what you wish it to be! This story, 'The Courtship Caper', is a delight! Each of the characters has interesting and sometimes downright amusing sides to them, especially the main ones, Sebastian and Venetia. These two are fortunate to have a second chance at love and what happens in-between to make it an unexpected success is what this story is about. I just love happy-ever-afters! Don't you?
**The Lady's Guide to Scandal - Emmanuelle de Maupassant As with some other books written by this author which have "The Lady's Guide to..." in their titles, this one also refers to a book which seems to assist ladies by giving them most interesting advice on how to handle the various situations in their lives - hence the title. This particular story is about Cornelia and Ethan who were friends when they were much younger and later meet in a very interesting situation in the Museum where Cornelia works. The story takes off from there and has a very satisfactory ending - what happens in between kept me glued to the pages. These two characters both seem to be headstrong in the beginning but as they grow to like each other, they begin to understand each other and love with all it's complexities rears its head. I have enjoyed being entertained by them and what they get up to so much and therefore recommend that you not miss this one.
**A Scandal Before Christmas - April Moran So, which will it be by Christmas, a scandal or a wedding? In this delightful story you will learn which it is, but until you do, you will probably enjoy a wonderfully seductive second chance tale. I know I did. It was interesting to read how Lauren and Theodore learned to trust each other again and how their love blossomed once they did. This is a very enjoyable story which is easy to read and it has two lovely main characters whom I could easily see in my minds eye. I enjoyed it so much and hope you read and enjoy it too.
**Rogue for Hire - Sasha Cottman This story has a most intriguing theme. Rather than creating scandals, Lord Harry Steele decides he will manage them in order to support himeself. Along comes Alice North, an heiress, and she needs to get rid of a man who seems to be after her sister's fortune. Their parents are away on an extended holiday so it is up to Alice to get this sorted out. Harry takes on the case and what follows is a beautiful love affair between Alice and him together with many ups and downs and a ton of passion thrown in for good measure. All of this was very entertaining and what I classify as a good read.
These reviews are based on each particular story. They are given voluntarily and are my unbiased opinion of each. I received and read an Advance Reader Copies (ARC) of these books.
So hard to review all these wonderful books at once, but here goes:
This is a naughty collection of stories, but is entertaining as it explores human emotions and sexuality. Be prepared for quite explicit sex scenes.
ROGUE FOR HIRE - Sasha Cottman - A bit different from other Regency romances, with a strong female character not afraid to try to live her life as she wants, but also ditzy girls and opportunistic rakes. I liked that Harry was so 'out there' but helping people find the life they should have. He has an interesting background and a life that only makes sense when he lowers his defences, revealing a vulnerability that makes him human. THE HIGHLANDER'S CHRISTMAS LASSIE - Anna Campbell - the poignant story of star-crossed lovers manipulated by his arrogant family for their own misguided purposes. I found this story sad, as so much time was wasted and no happy ending could ever take away the hurt and pain of their separation. This story has so many underlying emotions, I read some bits twice to try to understand how they came to this; not in terms of their separation, but the lies they had been told to bring them to this point. A story of second chances. THE CHRISTMAS ROSE - Emma V. Leech - This story starts where a lot end; with a hasty marriage, but as it unfolds, it reveals more and more of the insecurities and past hurts of the couple, and unravels their true feelings as they strive to make a forced marriage work. The hero is a rake with a reputation so bad he is only tolerated in polite society and has never managed to achieve an introduction to the woman who has caught and held his eye. The heroine is a girl who is far from the delicate and petite debutantes who are looking for husbands and expects to become an old maid. But her heart is kind and she tries to prevent a male friend from being caught in a parson's trap with a selfish and nasty woman, only to find herself compromised. The lovely surprise is revealed when they realise each has covertly watched the other at every event, but misunderstandings abound, as well as the very human emotion of not feeling good enough for the other. It has a happy and satisfying ending. THE LADY'S GUIDE TO SCANDAL - Emmanuelle De Maupassant - The setting for this story starts in Mexico then moves to the gentle drawing rooms of Victorian and post-Victorian England, and has an underlying ripple of the changes about to overtake the world. Not in predicting the coming war, but in the attitudes of all classes that the war would eventually bring to a head. The position of a woman as she tries to forge a life for herself without the 'guidance' of a man is shown in all its frustrations with the attitudes of men who would treat an intelligent woman as little more than a dimwitted girl in need of protection and the condescending, superior wisdom men presumed to have. The aunties are a delight, with their independent attitudes and unconditional love, if somewhat meddling. Finding a man who is her complete match and convincing him she's no wilting flower, is delightful. There's a twist regarding their childhood. FATE GAVE ME A DUKE - Amanda Mariel - A bored man and a wallflower who loves books. A case of mistaken identity but instant attraction. A compromised lady and a rake with the worst reputation of any. The growth of their relationship is the central point of this book, and, although laced with a lot of sex, does see them develop a deep, abiding commitment to each other. THE COURTSHIP CAPER - Beverley Oakley - The beginning of this story didn't inspire me as it seemed the two sisters were immature, but they did demonstrate the different marriages of the day, in that some were love matches, some grew to a meaningful relationship and others were shallow and unfaithful. But underneath it all is the story of a man denied his true love by a father with ambitions and prejudices. Overcoming their hurts, foolishness and misconceptions takes them on a journey that almost ends before it can begin. It is not helped by the interference of the two sisters. DUNCAN'S CHRISTMAS - Ellie St. Clair - A delightful tale of and honourable man trying to do the right thing by the father of his intended, a case of mistaken abduction and the gentle growth of an enduring relationship between an unlikely couple. I really liked these two characters; their integrity and care for others above themselves and how they found what they needed and was really important despite the setting outside their beloved highlands. BEDEVILLED: A RUSSIAN PURSUIT - Elsa Holland - Two brothers with such different lives and the strong expectation that family comes before all else, even it it means losing everything. Lies, deceit, swapped identities and more, until all seems to come right for one brother at the expense of the other. It was frustrating that the reason for the deception became totally irrelevant in the end and the elder brother seemed to not know or care that his problem caused so much heartache for his brother and almost ruined his life and took his love. At the least, the elder brother could have tried to intervene and explain the situation, but selfishly, did not. Can a leopard change its spots? This story says it can. AT THE MISTLETOE MASQUERADE - Dayna Quince - A man's honour might be his only true value, but sometimes it can stand in the way of happiness. If it wasn't enough that Cassie's brother warned away every man who dared look in her direction, but he was oblivious to her feelings and those of his best friend, who put honour above his love for her. Perversely, it was his lack of honour that brought them together in a case of mistaken identity, and she is appalled that she is forced to marry the man she loves in scandal and duty but not the affection she wanted from him. This story also makes abundantly clear that it's fine for a man to dally but a woman cannot even spend a moment alone with a man. Her brother takes his friend's side and condemns her, even though his own behaviour is 'like a tomcat'. Add to that, the spoiled Delilah, whose father will blackmail a man his daughter wants, and the double standards are rife. There are little gems all through this book, like Delilah's father, 'Darling, why don't you take a turn about the room and let the men work out a deal.' That statement reinforces the belief that woman were only chattels to be bargained or sold. But the subsequent gentle getting to know the real person behind the facades society demanded, and beyond the secret Sidney hides, are what make this story so sweet. A SCANDAL BEFORE CHRISTMAS - April Moran - From a broken betrothal to a second chance, I loved the way Theodore was so persistent in winning Lauren back. There are so many misunderstandings and hurts underlying this story, but it also has a man, Sanderson, who is so arrogant and full of his own importance, he actually crosses a line and tries to force Lauren into his bed. This horrible young man is set against Theodore, who is caring but Lauren doubts his motives, until all is revealed. Even the truth threatens to tear them apart, but the love they are both hiding shines through at last. HER VIRGIN DUKE - Nicola Davidson - A young man who has been taught to look on his own body as sinful and sexual behaviour as unbecoming of a duke, even that pleasuring himself is wrong, and is so repressed he hardly functions in society, let alone lost his virginity, and a young widow whose business is pleasure. Such total opposites seem unlikely as a couple, but lust knows no limits. Added to that the fact that one of his oppressors and trustees' sons is spoiled, callous and an out of control rake as well as cruel, and Bennett's future looks bleak. The story of him overcoming his hang-ups and falling in love with a most unsuitable woman is, surprisingly, delightful. There are quite a few surprising twists to this story, none more than his sister and her husband, who are members of the pleasure temple. A SCANDALOUS SECRET - Laura Trentham - The hero of this story is a little boy sadly orphaned and rejected by his village and thrust into an orphanage to fend for himself. As a man, he has been rescued, educated and employed by Britain's spymaster, but his existence is still a very lonely one. His hidden love for the spymaster's daughter is fraught with danger, as the man would not hesitate to throw him in the Thames if he so much as looked at his only daughter. But Thomas and Victoria have shared one stolen kiss and he hungers for her, against any expectation as his station is so far below hers. He guards her and her mother every day but must maintain his distance. Victoria doesn't help in this, as she flirts with him and offers smiles that set him afire. Thomas rescues her from a clumsy kidnap attempt and hides her overnight in a small cottage. After stealing a kiss, Thomas wakes to find Victoria exploring his body and it is too much to resist. Thomas follows the trail of the danger to Victoria and discovers a surprising plot, but in the saving of Victoria, their love grows, until it is no longer a secret. There is enough of a plot to carry this story through the unrequited lust to finding love and the dangers that surround them. THE CHRISTMAS COURTESAN - Victoria Vale - This story is scandalous from the start when a young widow who, although her husband was aloof, gave her pleasure in their bed and left her coming to terms with needing to satisfy her base urges. Women were not supposed to be sexual creatures; that was a man's domain. The hero of this tale is a younger son with an irresponsible brother who loses their sister's dowry in speculation. Needing money urgently and in abundance, Roger hears that there is a group of male courtesans hiring themselves out to widows and other society ladies for the sex and social escort they are willing to pay big money for. Miranda investigates the group out of curiosity, and for her naughty friends, and Roger hesitantly takes on the role of paid courtesan in order to recoup his sister's dowry. Thrown together at a Christmas house party, Roger's aloofness almost halts any relationship before it begins, but together they take a step that is scandalous. But, not only is shy Roger a virgin, he hides a secret that is embarrassing and could leave him exposed to ridicule from the ton. This is an unexpected and unlikely liaison, but they are attracted to each other and begin to hope that they might just find love after all, if they can avoid detection and form a relationship that is more than that between a widow and her paid courtesan.
Miss Felicity Bunting (Bunty, a friend of Freddie's we met briefly in A Scent of Scandal) believes she is unlovable and not worthy of marriage. Lord Ludovic Courtenay (Ludo to his friends and Lascivious Ludo to the ton) has a reputation as a rake and a scoundrel. When Bunty accidentally traps Ludo into marriage, she is scandalised, but Ludo is more... intrigued.
Ms. Leech weaves a beautiful story of two misfits, who just might be the perfect fit after all, all wrapped up with a pretty Christmas bow! Love, love, love this story!
I have only read two of the novellas in this anthology - they were both great and I look forward to reading the rest of the collection!
The Highlander’s Christmas Lassie by Anna Campbell - 5 stars:
Malcolm Innes, Laird of Dun Carron, is traveling to the town of Muirburgh in December because Fergus Mackinnon, Laird of Achnasheen told him that he might find what he has spent the last 18 years looking for – his son! But when he finally makes it to the farmhouse, he finds much more than he was hoping for – not only is his son alive and well but so is the woman he has never stopped loving, even after he was told she was dead! But rather than be thrilled to be united with her love, Rhona Macleod is angry and tells him to leave. Stunned that she is alive, he agrees to go, but he will be back. He prepares to go when his son Patrick intervenes and tells him that he can stay in the barn and that he will try to talk to his mother.
Rhona is furious, how dare Malcolm show up and pretend to be happy to see her? He is the reason she was sent away from Dun Carron! When she calms a bit, she brings a meal out to the barn and they talk. Soon it becomes clear, they were both betrayed that day and she is amazed to learn that he has never married and has spent the last 18 years looking for Patrick because he was told that Rhona was dead. But even with this revelation, Rhona is not convinced that this is the miracle that Malcolm believes it is – 18 years is a long time and she is not the same girl he knew – can they pick up the pieces of their broken love and have a second chance at happiness?
I loved this story, it is part of the anthology “Have Yourself a Merry Little Scandal” that I can’t wait to finish reading! The story reminded me of the book Betrayed by Bertrice Small, however, this novella is definitely its own tale, but, if you liked that book – you will LOVE this novella. It is a well written, nicely paced story complete with a crushing betrayal that tears them apart, warm love scenes, revelations, surprises, a love that never died, a HEA and a sweet epilogue. This is story has a tie-in to the Lairds Most Likely series, but it is definitely a standalone title. This novella is part of an anthology, but even if it is the only story you read in the collection – it is worth the money you paid for this story alone!
At the Mistletoe Masquerade by Dayna Quince - 4 stars:
Lady Cassandra “Cassie” has long been in love with her brother’s best friend Sidney Anthem, Viscount Reardon, but is sure he just thinks of her as his friend’s little sister. So, in an attempt to steal a kiss and hopefully change Sidney’s prospective of her – she plans to get him alone at the Mistletoe Masquerade and kiss him. She isn’t trying to trap him but unfortunately due to the scheming of another woman who wants to marry him, that is exactly what happens.
Sidney always like Cassie, but it wasn’t until her come out that he realized his feelings were much deeper. He has stayed away because she is Tristan’s sister and because of a secret that he is keeping that makes him feel unworthy of her affections. When they are caught kissing at the ball, he immediately does the honorable thing and offers for her. But Cassie doesn’t want to be an obligation and Sidney’s feelings of unworthiness might keep them from their HEA.
This was nice novella with a bit of a friends to lovers vibe. The secret Sidney keeps is not as earth shattering as I assumed and Cassie’s reaction to his revelation was priceless. The novella is well written, nicely paced, has surprisingly warm to steamyish love scenes, great secondary characters and a wonderful ending. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more by this author.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me at my request – all opinions are my own.*
What a delight to have some scandalous and sexy Christmas tales from the regency era! The tales are all different and feature some great authors. I especially loved "A Lady's Guide to Scandal" by Emmanuelle de Maupassant and A Scandal Before Christmas by April Moran. The Lady's Guide books are such a hoot. They are adventurous and funny, but sooooo romantic. The female characters are strong and not afraid to be bold and brave in an era when women were supposed to be meek and mild. Cordelia is branded in the prickly English society circles by the scandals of her mother and late husband. She is reluctant to give up her freedom as a widow when her childhood friend, a rich Texas Indiana Jones type explorer, proposes that they have a fake relationship to protect him from the husband-seeking young society ladies and their predatory mothers. Snowed-in for Christmas in a stately manor, all kinds of fun, mystery and suspense await the guests. I really loved Cordelia's aunts who have deliciously ribald banter behind their fans. The story presents a side of English society that is full of gossip, sex and scandal.
A Scandal Before Christmas has a fresh approach to Regency with Lauren arriving at her cousin's 2-week Christmas house party only to find her ex-fiancée there too! Lauren broke her engagement to Theodore when she discovered that their father had arranged their match for mutual benefit - to the fathers. Lauren was mortified at being "sold" to Theodore's family and even madder that he did not tell her. Theodore is now intent on wooing and seducing her, to show her that he still loves her. I loved all the plot twists as Theodore finds ways to wriggle back into her heart, and other parts of her body as well. The Christmas season activities were festive too. This story has a lot of sexual tension as he tries to seduce her and the pages ignite by the end. A very fun and sexy romance.
1. ROGUE FOR HIRE by SASHA COTTMAN 2. THE HIGHLANDER'S CHRISTMAS LASSIE by ANNA CAMPBELL 3. THE CHRISTMAS ROSE by EMMA V. LEECH 4. THE LADY'S GUIDE TO SCANDAL by EMMANUELLE DE MAUPASSANT Just for the record, I've never read a book by Emmanuelle de Maupassant that I have not thoroughly enjoyed, and 'The Lady's Guide to Scandal' is no exception! There are several books in 'The Lady's Guide' series and they all refer to a little book that assists ladies by giving very sage advice on how to handle various situations in life. When I read these pieces of advice, along with the heroine, they usually make me laugh. If Emmanuelle's heroines were prim and proper ladies with milk-toast personalities they could be taken literally. But the heroine, aka Cornelia, is very strong-willed. A woman ahead of her time, these pieces of advice are open to interpretation as needed. LOL Unfortunately, she finds herself in situations that have sullied her name through no fault of her own. She and Ethan were friends when they were younger and, as life often happens, they ultimately took separate paths. Cornelia volunteers at a Museum and Ethan, an explorer recently returned from the jungles in Mexico. When they meet again, it's a bit of a shock. Especially when Cornelia snuck into a room at the Museum, where she volunteers, and she finds what she believes to be a thief!! Some of the antics between these two on top of the side characters, which include elderly aunts and a dog, had me laughing until tears rolled. This was a great adventure with all the chemistry that comes along with a story that brings a second chance to two very strong people.
5. THE COURTSHIP CAPER by BEVERLEY OAKLEY 6. A SCANDALOUS SECRET by LAURA TRENTHAM 7. FATE GAVE ME A DUKE by AMANDA MARIEL 8. DUNCAN'S CHRISTMAS by ELLIE ST. CLAIR 9. BEDEVILED: A RUSSIAN PURSUIT by ELSA HOLLAND 10. AT THE MISTLETOE MASQUERADE by DAYNA QUINCE 11. THE CHRISTMAS COURTESAN by VICTORIA VALE 12. A SCANDAL BEFORE CHRISTMAS by APRIL MORAN April Moran is a new author for me. She was recommended by an author I admire so I took a chance. I'll tell you right now, I'm certainly glad I did because she just found herself another follower. 'A Scandal Before Christmas' is part of the "Have Yourself a Merry Little Scandal' Anthology and is everything I'd hoped it would be. Her world-building is vivid, a must for me, her characters are perfectly flawed, making them relatable, there's angst, drama, humor, and chemistry within the story and the plot runs seamlessly. You see, Lady Lauren Kendall was engaged to Theodore Hawthorne. 'Was' being the operative word. Then she finds out Theodore didn't voluntarily ask her to marry him, it was a mutually beneficial arrangement between their fathers. Well, you know, every woman has their pride! So she broke the engagement and called it off. Then wouldn't you know, she attends a Christmas house-party and who should be there? Yep, you guessed it, Theodore himself. Now to be fair to Theodore, he really did, and still does, love Lauren. The whole thing is just a twisted mess. This second-chance love story has the potential to shock the ton, but will it? You've got to read this. You won't be disappointed.
13. HER VIRGIN DUKE by NICOLA DAVIDSON
I was fortunate to be given an ARC for "A Lady's Guide to Scandal' by Emmanuel de Maupassant and "A Scandal Before Christmas' by April Moran. If these two books are any indication of the caliber of work represented in this anthology, then, by all means, sign me up!
A Scandalous Secret – Laura Trentham A bodyguard story – yes, please. The class distinction stories are always so good. I’m not good enough, yes you are. Thomas and Victoria are so sweet together and grow as a couple. How can Victoria convince Thomas they are meant to be together, yes he knows but is very resistant. Spy stories are some of my favorites and the little mystery in this short story really grabs your attention. Oh, and there is a little scandalous secret…shh, not telling.
Her Virgin Duke – Nicola Davidson Practice makes perfect. At least that is what Bennett thinks and he is so right. I loved this story of the Mistress of Sin and the Virgin Duke. I really liked Delilah. She was not portrayed as a sleazy sex goddess but as a down to earth person who enjoyed sex and had actual feels for others and great business acumen. Such a joy to read. Bennett, bless his heart, was so repressed that when he let go…watch out girls, cover yourselves. An amazing story.
A Scandal Before Christmas – April Moran I love second chance romances and this one has it all (even if I would have loved to keep reading about Theodore and Lauren). The backstory was fleshed out and the re-courting commenced well. You have to hand to Theodore, he was tenacious in his pursuit of Lauren. These two loved each other, it was all about trust and being honest. A great Christmas story.
Rogue for Hire – Sasha Cottman The hero in this book has an awesome name, Lord Harry Steele. He and his friends are little on the illegal side but are trying very hard to make their legitimate business work. Enter Harry and his “secrets” business. Alice hires Harry to break up her sister’s infatuation (you know how that goes) and end up falling in love. What Alice does not realize is that her sister and the fortune hunter (who really isn’t, sort of) are actually in love so what can you do. A very cute story and it seems to be the beginning of a new series! YAY!
A Lady’s Guide to Scandal – Emmanuelle de Massupassant I like stories that are a bit of our the norm. This is the second story I have read by Em that features a Texas native. Those old west men are yummy. The archaeological aspects of the story are very interesting especially since I knew some of the places mentioned. You have these two great characters who make a pact to escape matchmaking relatives but guess what? Yes, of course, they fall in love. A nice little adventure story.
Review is of Her Virgin Duke - by Nicola Davidson only
The very rich and very powerful Madame of a pleasure club is retiring, at the age of 28, in order to gain a life and a future, maybe even a husband and family. But as her days near the end at the club, a virgin Duke stumbles into her establishment, and into her arms.
The duke, while a virgin, apparently has an authoritative and commanding sexuality under his starchy cravat just waiting to be educated...and to find a wife. But the infamous owner of said club couldn't possibly hope to ever marry a Duke...could she?
Read while sprawled on a fur rug by a roaring fire (or set up your YouTube aesthetic stream as such) and delight in this wonderfully steamy Christmas novella!
*I received an advance review copy from the author
I have only read A Scandalous Secret. I liked that the characters are not the usual. Victoria's father is a Sir and years ago he brought a little boy into their home for him to train and work for him. Thomas has always been very loyal, but he has a secret. He has loved Victoria for years. His father was a blacksmith and he isn't a fit husband for someone like Victoria. He can still dream. When Victoria's life is put in danger, they are forced to spend time alone and their love can't be denied any longer. He knows he will have to give her up, but it isn't going to be easy. Will they find a way to be together?
Don't be expecting a Regency type romance. In the beginning I didn't feel a connection to this couple. The H does many illegal things to support himself. He decides since he knows how to be in scandals, he has the knowledge how to get people out of them.
The h is left alone with the care of her sister. The parents have no-one in charge of them when they travel all over Europe. The H kisses the h in public and no-one is upset. Then the H takes her to a sex parlor and she watches all kinds of things.
There is lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4.5 out of 5. Since I didn't feel a connection, it was more lust.
I did appreciate the direction of one part of the story that surprised me. That having to do with the h's sister and a man after her fortune. Really enjoyed the twist on that part.
No cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple, HEA, little on romance and spice.
2. THE HIGHLANDER'S CHRISTMAS LASSIE by Anna Campbell - 4.5 STARS
Such an emotional story. Two teenagers torn apart by lies. What each experienced is so heart breaking. The H never gave up hope of finding his child. Looked for 18 years and couldn't bring himself to love another even though he was Laird of his clan. The h believed he cast her aside and do to necessity had to forge a new life because she believed the lies.
The way the story unraveled was like peeling layers off an onion. I felt a connection to this couple so when they do make love it was filled with passion. Heat level 3 out of 5.
Touch of Christmas spirit, no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and a touch of spice.
3. THE CHRISTMAS ROSE by Emma V. Leech - 5 STARS
BEAUTIFUL COVER AND STORY!
Both the H/h felt they didn't deserve each other. The h is 25, feels like she is on the shelf. She doesn't believe in herself because she is tall, full figure and made to feel undesirable. The H has been treated awful his whole life and does everything possible to tarnish the families name. By pure accident fate steps in and even though forced to wed, neither are disappointed.
This story has so many twists and surprises. I enjoyed their honesty with each other and how they listened too.
There is lovemaking within marriage, heat level 4.5 out of 5, filled with passion. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and steam. Little on Christmas theme.
4. THE LADY'S GUIDE TO SCANDAL by Emmanuelle de Maupassant - 4 STARS
Likable character's - the Aunt's were a hoot! Unique story line with an Indiana Jones type of H, who has his own chip on his shoulder. The h is now a widow and through no fault of her own, has the TON turning against her.
There is crude language at times. Lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and only described 2 times I think.
Some suspense, no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and a tad of spice. Some of the language at times was modern, such as HOTS FOR YOU.
5. FATE GAVE ME A DUKE by Amanda Mariel - 3.5 STARS
The story is the h goes into the library during Ball to get away. The H makes arrangements to meet an old lover in the library - you guessed it, he makes the h for his ex lover. Before the lover comes, he starts to make love to the h and she allows some liberties, until they are caught and forced to marry.
I didn't feel a connection to them. He starts almost immediately calling her darling, just wasn't believable to me. He is a known Rogue, and doesn't feel at all trapped. Yes, the h is friends with his best friend so she must be nice? Another part was they were planning an evening alone Christmas Eve and are starting to act like newlyweds. But, so many people drop in unannounced. I doubt that would happen.
I did like the honest dialogue. There is a lot of lovemaking, within marriage, heat level 4.5 out of 5.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and a lot of steam, plus an epilogue 6 months in the future.
6. THE COURTSHIP CAPER by Beverley Oakley - 3.25 STARS
I usually like this writer's style but this story was just okay. Way too many misunderstandings with so many people. I had no trouble keeping it straight, but it wore me down. Hard to call it a romance, when their romance happened 4-5 years prior. They reconnect at a house party.
There is so much cheating during the house party, but not with our H/h so that was a plus. I didn't feel a connection to them because of all the misdirects. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5.
Everything is resolved in a few pages, so we do get HEA.
7. DUNCAN'S CHRISTMAS by Ellie St. Clair - 5 STARS
This author can write novella's or full novels. I'm an avid reader and I can tell you not all author's can do this. This is a novella, that is packed with so much!
I got a kick out of how Duncan and his 2 friends are sent from the Highlands to London to retrieve his betrothed. Not to bring her back for himself, but as a promise he made to her father. He ends up kidnapping her sister instead and that is where the story gets interesting.
The character's came to life in this novella. I felt I understood each of their unique personalities. Add to the secondary character's and the season of Christmas comes shining through. Our H (a big Highlander) isn't use to the traditions the English borrowed from the German's and has his eyes opened. The h feels like no-one really sees her, until the H finally sees what is in front of him. I loved the journey to HEA!
There is mild lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 2 out of 5.
No cheating, romance builds slowly and a small tad (1) of spice.
8. BEDEVILED: A RUSSIAN PURSUIT by Elsa Holland - 3 STARS
My first story by this author and I didn't feel a connection to this couple until near the end. It borders to the edge of being erotic. I liked the the banter the h gave the H in the beginning. She was someone I liked, until she decided within a very short period, she would like to taste the forbidden fruit and become another number on his bedpost.
There is major secret the H is keeping from her. The reason seemed ridiculous to me. Did no-one know in the whole of London, who the real Prince was? Many traveled for business and it was this big secret who was the one in charge.
Cheating, but not by the H/h, no romance but plenty of lust, HEA finally and steam. (ljb)
9. AT THE MISTLETOE MASQUERADE BY Dayna Quince - 5 STARS
Such wonderful and engaging character's. The H has been friends for years with the h's brother. He had some unspoken code he couldn't court the h.
Great dialogue, character's written with depth, story line not unusual but still entertaining. The H/h are caught in a compromising situation. Which leads to the h having doubts. What neither are aware they both loved each other. The H fought it, but the h pushed the envelope to see if he did had feelings. Of course, it was for the best because someone was trying to trap the H and he was saved.
Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and some action prior.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, engaging character's, romance and some steam.
10. A SCANDAL BEFORE CHRISTMAS by April Moran 3.25 STARS
Writing is good, just didn't care for most of the story line. I didn't care for the H because he tried to hard to win the h back. Over and over she treats him awful, does he walk away, no, he takes it time and again.
They were to be married and because of an arrangement between each of their father's, which she discovers, she breaks the contract. The H does know what the father's intended and they asked him not to share with the h. Over and over he tries to explain, as do others, but she is beyond stubborn and refuses to take a chance on him again. It got old quickly for me.
There is lovemaking outside of marriage, very descriptive, heat level 5 out of 5. The Lord's name and crude words used many times.
It did improve the last few chapter's in their dealings with each other. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and plenty of steam.
11. HER VIRGIN DUKE by Nicola Davidson - 3.25 STARS
The H came across as two different personalities. He has been very sheltered because his 3 old overseer's are very straight laced. We know by the title he is a virgin - 25 year old one at that. What bothered me is one of the overseer's has a son who is rude and runs wild, but the rules are different for the H? Where the second personality comes into play, he has one time with the h and he starts talking crudely and acts so differently. I did like how he took control near the end of the story concerning some men.
You will have to suspended what you know of this time period. Because how things played out would not have happened. But, I did enjoy some of the journey.
The story at times was very sensual - heat level 5 out of 5 - very descriptive too (outside of marriage). There is crude language and Lord's name used.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, lustful, little on romance and plenty of sensual steam.
12. A SCANDELOUS SECRET by Laura Trentham - 5 STARS
Does this follow all the worry of Regency Rules and how the Ton will think, no. Is it one heck of a ride to get to HEA -big yes.
This is filled with romance, suspense, mystery and villains. The character's are richly written and their feelings come through.
There is passionate, sweet lovemaking, outside of marriage - heat level 3.5 out of 5, I think described twice.
The H is an orphan who is indebted to the h's father from rescuing him and teaching him skills. The h is the only child of a spy master and has loved the H for years. The H feels he is not right for the h because his blood isn't blue (ton standards). I loved these two together and made how they find their way to each other entertaining ride.
13. THE CHRISTMAS COURTESAN by Victoria Vane - 5 STARS
Such a unique take on what you normally perceive a courtesan to be. The H has a speech problems if that isn't enough, he is a virgin. He is over 36 years old and is very shy. He is the middle sibling but is the care taker of his family. His brother has spent their younger siblings dowry.
Not your normal Regency tale but that is why made it unique. Is the story line far fetched, yes. But, it held my interest because it was so different.
Obviously with this title there is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 5 out of 5
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, touch of romance and steam. I liked the epilogue one year in the future. (ljb)
Anna Campbell has a way with words, they bring out the best in her characters as we get to know them in her beautiful stories, this one is part of a Christmas anthology and it is just the most heartwarming Christmas story. A second chance at love for Malcom Innes, Laird of Dun Carron and Rhona two people who were torn apart, eighteen years ago and now Malcom has found the love of his life who he has been searching for all of those years and he finds his son, can this Christmas bring the love and joy that should be theirs. This is a must read story sure to bring a lot of warmth and smiles to any reader, so beautifully written, it shows how determined Malcom was to find Rhona and their child through many hard times and lots of countries he kept his faith and Rhona well she had a lot of hurt to get over oh but her heart still flutters around him. If you are looking for a quick fabulous read with lots of Christmas joy and magic and a wonderful romance, then I highly recommend this one, and of course I am very much looking forward to all of the other stories in this anthology.
Rogue for Hire Sasha Cottman This is a sizzling sensual story, and Sasha Cottman writes them so well, I was turning the pages with this one, come along and meet rogue Lord Harry Steele and the woman who would win his heart Alice North as they journey to a well- deserved HEA, with a few ups and downs.
Harry is the black sheep of the family son to a duke and he always seems to be caught up in one scandal after another, his father finally has had enough and throws him on Christmas Eve, Now he has to come up with a way to make a living, his idea is very good he will now get paid to manage other people’s scandals, which is how he met Alice, things will really change now.
Alice is the daughter of a business man new money as the ton calls them and her and her sister Patience have quite big dowries, so when her sister gets hooked up with a man that Alice is sure he after her dowry, she calls in Lord Harry Steele to help get her sister out of this scandal.
Their first meeting sets them both just about on fire Harry can be such a dandy with the way he dresses, but Alice has been bought up to have an open mind and it is not long before the two of them can barely keep their hands off each, and they find true love and happiness. Another fabulous story.
I have read two books from this anthology so far I do look forward to reading the others, I was lucky I saw it through an early eyes opportunity and got the chance to read them and I truly can recommend them so much Anna Campbell and Sasha Cottman write such awesome stories.
This beautifully crafted novella sets off at a cracking pace from the start and jumps straight into the heart of the story – with a marriage being negotiated after a compromising situation. Bunty is our buxom, wallflower heroine, a no nonsense girl who - at twenty-five - is well aware her attractions are considered limited at best. Ludo is a very reluctant but notorious rake who’s had a longing eye on Bunty for some time but believing her out of reach. He was unaware Bunty had savoured his smiles and packed them away to be taken out and relived on days when she felt alone. The chemistry between them is apparent right from the start and I knew immediately I was going to love them. We get a very distinct sense of the strength of each of these characters – even in this short glimpse of their story - and observing as they help each other fight their individual demons and work towards their blissfully happy ending (Oops sorry spoiler alert) is a joy.
I do love these collections of novellas, they are such a great way to get to sample new or unfamiliar authors. If you are not familiar with Emma V Leech’s work, The Christmas Rose is a perfect little amuse bouche, a tiny taste of the stories and brilliantly portrayed, colourful characters you will find in the Rogues and Gentleman series (currently 17 books). The whole series is wonderfully constructed with familiar characters making appearances throughout the series, offering a window into a whole society that you really do feel at home in. It was wonderful to bump into a few old friends in The Christmas Rose – giving me a strong urge to go back and read them again. If you haven’t read this series I encourage you to do so – you are in for a treat with so many vastly different, real, often slightly damaged characters to fall in love with - much as you do with Bunty and Ludo.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Scandal The Christmas Rose I’m a huge fan of Emma’s and this sweet holiday romance is just the thing to start the season! The fun starts as the star crossed couple begin with a scandal and a heartfelt romance ensues. I couldn’t put this story down and read it in one sitting. I’ve no doubt you will enjoy it as much as I did.
This review is for The Courtship Caper by Beverley Oakley. A series of crossed wires, misunderstandings and the belief of two matchmaking sisters that they are watching a courtship of their own making, when in fact the two people are interested in another. At 16 chapters this is a good length book that enables the reader to get into the characters. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Having originally read and reviewed an advanced copy of the above story from the author, I later went on to purchase my own copy. Here are my reviews of the other stories.
Rogue for Hire 3* by Sasha Cottman - Lord Harry Steele, the disowned 4th son of a Duke is flamboyant, scandalous and a bit depraved; at times I liked him, at others, not. Harry and his friends are certainly not fine upstanding men, in fact they are involved in all of manner of things that could see them get hanged. Not that the story focuses on Harry’s illegal activities but instead his business of squashing other peoples scandals. It is in this role that he meets Miss Alice North who needs his help in separating her sister from a fortune hunter. For the first time since he opened his business, Harry finds himself falling for a client but being Harry rather than court her, he does all sorts of scandalous things with her. Found the story too modern in it’s sensibilities, I don’t think I’ll be reading more in this series. The Highlander’s Christmas Lassie 5* by Anna Campbell - Wow, what a fabulous story. It was awful for Rhona but truly heartbreaking for what Malcolm endured. The only thing that disappointed me was that after they were reunited there were no babies as Rhona was still young enough to conceive. The Christmas Rose 5* by Emma V. Leech - Captivating story. A rogue hiding a lost little boy and an ‘on the shelf’ spinster who is insecure re her looks. A highly recommended and delightful novella. The Lady’s Guide to Scandal 5* by Emmanuelle de Maupassant - The heroine has a scandalous past but not one of her making. Will a Texan explorer of Mayan architecture be the one to give her the more fulfilling future she dreams of? Fate gave me a Duke 4* by Amanda Mariel - Scandal forces a marriage but there is little angst, all is sweetness and light and true love shortly follows. Do wish this story had been properly proof-read; I think ‘quiet toughly ruined’ should have been ‘quite thoroughly ruined’ then, among others, we have ‘bone wary’, ‘a glass of campaign’ and I did enjoy reading that they had a ‘picnic nick’. Duncan’s Christmas 5* by Ellie St. Clair - First Duncan’s betrothed runs off with another man, then when he ‘rescues’ her to return her to her father he kidnaps the wrong woman, then he finds himself asking for a bed from his betrothed’s new husband and celebrating a sassenach holiday - things are not going to plan for Duncan! And then there is Jane, the sister he never saw before but now cannot get out of his mind. A fun Christmas novella. Bedevilled: A Russian Pursuit 5* by Elsa Holland - At 27 chapters this is a full length novel, a story of deceit and charades, passion, heartache and undying love. At the Mistletoe Masquerade 5* by Dayna Quince - Cassie’s plan to find out if Sidney can see her as a woman by stealing a mistletoe kiss goes horribly wrong. Or, does it? Highly recommended. A Scandal Before Christmas 4* by April Moran - Lauren breaks her engagement on learning the hidden reasons behind it. One year later at her cousin’s house party, Theo is determined to reclaim her love and her hand in marriage. Would have preferred more relationship and less lust. Her Virgin Duke 5* by Nicola Davidson - Erotic and fun, even if highly unbelievable! An enjoyable read. A Scandalous Secret 5* by Laura Trentham - This book was my favourite in the anthology. We have a spirited and independent heroine, a gruff and intimidating hero (who is not a member of the ton) a hidden love, an unknown threat, disguise and adventure. Highly recommended. The Christmas Courtesan 5* by Victoria Vale - Roger’s stammer has made him reclusive and he steers away from relationships but he will do anything for his little sister and when their brother loses her dowry, he promises to find a way to recover it. He doesn’t expect that his secret liaison with a widow will bring him the love of a lifetime.
A Scandalous Secret by Laura Trentham—This novella had quite the mix-secrets, spicy chemistry, and a touch of danger. I liked Victoria’s insatiable curiosity and desire to explore and expand her knowledge on any subject that struck her fancy. Thomas appeared to be a gentle giant, but that seemed to be just around Victoria. Otherwise, he was the big, bad bodyguard you didn’t want to cross in a dark alley. Romantically, these two could light up the night with their attraction, yet I also appreciated that it wasn’t necessarily smooth sailing behind closed doors. I really need to delve in to the rest of this series and see what else I’ve been missing out on!
The Highlander's Christmas Lassie by Anna Campbell—Rhona and Malcolm’s second chance romance was heart wrenching, hopeful, and sometimes quite intense! There was a lot of emotional baggage to work through and these two gave as good as they got.
Bedeviled: A Russian Pursuit by Elsa Holland—Told in two parts, before and after, Ilya and Seraphina’s tale was...different. I’m still on the fence about it. There was a touch of forbidden to entice, open conversations regarding intimacy, social standings and the issues of getting the cut direct, perception and gossip rags...this would have been a stronger story if it had been longer.
I read The Highlander's Christmas Lassie by Anna Campbell which is a novella within this boxed set.
This is quite the reunion tale. Malcolm hasn't stopped searching for the love of his life, not knowing what became of her. Rhona was banished by Malcolm's father, the then Laird of Dun Carron, unknowingly pregnant and later to become somewhat renowned for her acting skills, marrying a theatrist who loved the boy and raised him as his own.
Anna Campbell writes beautiful stories often with strong, well rounded female characters. Rhona is no exception. It's nice to see a romance involving mature characters where the focus is their attraction and relationship, rather than the involvement of an alternate "love" interest or miscommunication.
There's a healthy amount of attraction, lusting and steam. This novella was a pleasure to read and if it's any indication, the boxed set would be a lovely addition to a Christmas reading list.
Thanks Anna for sending me a copy of the Highlander's Christmas Lassie to read.
Have just spent a glorious Sunday afternoon read The Lady's Guide to Scandal.
Cornelia has had enough scandal in her short life. However, none was of her making, yet she knows she has been tarred by several brushes.
An old childhood acquaintance comes back into her life and proposes they pretend to be besotted with each other to throw the gold digging mothers of London society off his scent.
Will Ethan's bizarre idea work and have the best of London society clamouring for her attentions?
A fab read!
Updated October 2021 - I have now read most of the other books in this collection.
Whilst some stories I really enjoyed - The Christmas Rose, Fate gave me a Duke, Duncan’s Christmas, At the Mistletoe Masquerade, Her Virgin Duke, A scandalous secret and the Christmas Courtesan - the others did not catch my imagination. A few of the stories could do with being edited again… some of the typos are howlers …. A glass of campaign in the gambling hell anyone?
"The Highlander's Christmas Lassie" a novella I don't usually like second chance romances. This one, however, was one of those unique books that I stayed up all night to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It was a touching Christmas story. A powerful comment on tragic lives that through strength of character they rekindle a love that lay dormant for a lifetime. An unforgettably hopeful story.
Loved this fun, romantic, sexy Christmas tale. With a little mystery thrown in, you just need a comfy chair by a beautifully lit Christmas tree and hot toddee to complete these fun stories set during a very romantic period of history.
