Collected in Murder, Interrupted, book 1 in James Patterson's written version of Discovery's Murder is Forever Series. A young girl has been sick her entire life with every conceivable disease - leukemia, brittle bones, asthma, eczema, problems sleeping or digesting foods, you name it. Even if it is blamed on defective chromosomes, I found this kind of unbelievable to be honest. Her mother has made the child's illness a selling point, getting free medical treatment, trips to Disneyland and even free housing.
When they move to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans, the child, now a teenager, gets a new doctor who wants to re-run all the tests, being skeptical. He eventually uncovers Munchausen's by proxy and the next thing you know, Murder is in the cards. I think I may have heard of this case happening, as I vaguely recall feeling that if I had been on the jury I would not have voted the child guilty.
Munchausen syndrome by proxy is the basis of this true life crime story. It is a very real medical problem that often goes undiagnosed until it is too late for the victims. Proper training is needed by both law enforcement and the medical community to understand and stop this problem.
I've heard of this disease. In fact, I had a friend who helped remove a child from the horrible mother with this disease by proxy. Heaven help the children.
