Blindsided by an attack that destroys her home and blamed for murder, Karolina Dalca, a half-vampire, escapes, only to plunge into the magical societies from which she was sheltered. Betrayed by those around her, she abandons her dreams of becoming an investigator and flees, trusting only herself. Her police internship would never prove more useful. Hoofing it through the wilderness, she makes it to her university dorm, disheveled but delightfully deflowered. Enter a full vampire: one wielding dark magic and a ride out of Canada. A fugitive from the law, Karo complies with his demands to escape, unsure whether his requests are bewitched. She vows to clear her name and avenge her mother's death, but Karo's family secrets aren't so easily left behind.
M. R. Noble has played a tug of war between science and art her whole life, but the rope broke when she wrote the first line of The Dark Eyes Series. Immersed up to her keyboard in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, she enjoys blending the real with the surreal. The only drawback is she misplaces her mug while dreaming up her next scene, and soon finds herself six cups overpoured.
Keeping to her Lake Simcoe roots, she is a member of the Writers Community of York Region (WCYR), where her muse is made not found.
Praise for M. R. Noble's Debut, KAROLINA DALCA, DARK EYES:
“This book grabs you by the throat and does not let go! A fast paced, enthralling journey through a hidden underworld of vampires, werewolves, and other beings of the night who wield a fascinating array of powers to devastating effect. Compared to the more stay-at-home-type of vampires and werewolves I know, these protagonists are pushed beyond the human limit. I Highly recommend you acquire this book and hole up somewhere safe for the ride." —Stuart Rutherford, actor from WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
“Fans of Kim Harrison will be drawn into the imagery of Noble’s first book of the Dark Eyes series. In between bouts of fighting and the intensity of paranormal, dark fantasy, there are moments of comedy that make this series opener a real page-turner.” —Booklist.
M.R Noble has re-ignited my passion for all things Magic! Not only is the story fantastic and a breath of fresh air in its genre, I really can’t say (even as an avid reader) that I’ve ever truly felt so taken along on a characters journey! We are truly given the opportunity to experience Karolina’s exciting journey/discovery as if we were right there with her! There’s not ever a dull moment and can be incredibly hard to put down!
Half-vampire, half-gypsy Karolina Dalca (Karo) has been brought up by her human mother in Canada, never knowing her father who was Romanian. Her mother tried to shelter her from the life of her vampire family.
With aspirations to be an investigator, Karo struggles to keep her inner self concealed when dealing with offenders, but when there is an attack on her home and her mother is killed the police suspect Karo as being the murderer and her career looks lost.
On the run to find answers Karo is confronted by a powerful vampire who claims to have been sent to protect her and take her to her Uncle in Eastern Europe but is he really working for her Uncle? With no-one else she can turn to she has to learn to trust her instincts and a man she has only just met.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes is a supernatural, fantasy. It is fast-paced and the adventure hits you from the first page. Karo is an intriguing character. She is skittish and sarcastic as well as having a decent sense of humour. She is hot-headed and doesn’t always think before she acts which gets her into some tricky situations.
The idea of someone being a half-vampire and half-gypsy was interesting, especially as the Gypsies also had some powers. I can’t say that she was an easy character to like as I found there was something a little stand-offish about her and didn’t really connect with her. I did like the werewolf Roman who has a crush on her and was there to protect her, even if she does try to get rid of him.
There were some raw, dark, gritty, violent scenes but nothing that I would class as frightening or horror-Esq, just scenes that fitted the moment, I mean we are dealing with vampires so there are going to be some bloody scenes!
Overall, the premise was good, the plot-line was a little far-fetched, but then we are talking about supernatural events and I wouldn’t have expected anything else, and the journey was enjoyable.
Southern Canada Carolina Dalke is half Romanian vampire and half Canadian. Raised by her mother and never having met her father her life is typical she is studying to be a private investigator at the Academy when her mother and home or attacked and she is blamed and feels alone but then she is confronted by Andre a vampire who says he has been sent to protect her, but being someone who is typically cynical she keeps them at an arms length. He takes her into a world she has never known is Andrea really there to help her and what about her uncle. This is all new to her and even though she is now living in in a world where she doesn’t have to hide her vampire side traits she learned being a human or still going to come in handy.. this is the first book in the dark eyes Siri‘s it is a very enjoyable read I love books where there is a bad ass female protagonist. I highly enjoyed this book and totally recommend it to those who love vampire and paranormal stories this is definitely one you should check out

What can I say this was an interesting read. I like the world and the set up. The story was good but it did drag slightly in parts. I like the half vampire part and how she learns all about herself and her family. The pirates were cool. I like the sarcastic banter through out and how Karo's temper sometimes get her into trouble. I would enjoy reading more in the series when it comes.
Review request from the author. Thank you to M.R. Noble for the digital copy in exchange for review.
3.5 ***
I don’t read a lot in the vampire section of the genre but when M.R. Noble offered a copy of Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyesfor review, I thought why not? This sounds fun, the cover was eye-catching (wink, wink) and I needed the change of pace this story promised.
Karolina Dalca, dreams of being an investigator and is set to finish up her schooling, when all hells breaks loose. While at home visiting- her mother is killed before her eyes when they are caught up in the crossfire of a Dryad hunt.
Her mother’s death catapults the story into high gear as Karolina is on the run out of fear of being blamed.
Help comes to her in the form of two men.
The first is her childhood friend and werewolf, Roman. Their families are close and even immigrated together. That connection between Karo and Roman gives them a closeness that Roman would like to build more upon.
And the second is the mysterious vampire Andre. He was sent by her dad’s side of the family to bring her home to Romania. Andre helps Karo out of a difficult situation, giving him an opportunity with her that he may not have had otherwise.
Karolina’s emotions are pulled towards each of the men for different reasons, but don’t let that potential love triangle scare you- there is very little time spent on sex or her pining over these men. The few scenes that did occur were quick, and incredibly tame, considering how sensuous they felt. Which sounds like an oxymoron but you’d have to read them to understand what I mean.
***
The story has a contemporary thriller feel; fast-paced action, twisty plot and foreign locales. The book sets-up and introduces us to Karolina’s world which is populated with the typical UF population; humans, vampires and werewolves, and Dyads (so far), and made me think of fun movies like Diesel’s XXX with those big organized crime families that have a global reach.
It’s pretty obvious to us, that Karolina’s father’s side of the family, is embroiled in the underworld but just how deep-reaching they go, isn’t clear until later when she travels to Romania.
There is a lot of the vampire kind of horror- blood, big overpowered fights, and some pretty dark themes with the equivalent of human feed lots etc. but it’s balanced well with humorous exchanges and some really fun moments- like the body switch, which was so out of left field and unexpected, that if I hadn’t enjoyed it for what it was, I would have loved it, just for surprising me with something different.
The magic is a blend of superpowered traits that are associated with vampires: strength and speed etc. but also “gypsy” magic of healing and earth magics. And then there is some fun stuff where they can bond, and I have to admit, I preferred this ‘born into the family’ brand of vampires and the bonding with the bites, or soul-sharing, over the traditional ‘turning everyone with a bite’. Especially when the races are a working part of the society, and not just the normal vampires and werewolves are monsters.
This was a hard one to choose a final score for (books like this are why I hate ratings), it pushes that line a little in the believability (I know we are talking vampires/werewolves here) especially at the beginning with the police stuff etc. And Karo’s emotionally charged, and occasionally whiplash-inducing choices, were enough to rattle your brain at times.
But the story does a lot of things right, and has fun doing them.... I mean c'mon there was a body-switch. That fun, doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously style, is what allowed me to sit back and really enjoy the ride.
Settle in somewhere because the relentless pace will make it hard for you to put this one down.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes is a fast-paced, action-packed fantasy story featuring the supernatural world in a uniquely imaginative and captivating manner.
What I Liked
I enjoyed the unique twist on vampire and werewolf lore. In this story, vampires are born to vampire parents, not mortals turned by a vampire. Werewolves are also born to werewolf parents. Though, a mortal or other supernatural can willingly complete a bonding ritual with a pack leader that will turn them into a werewolf after their first kill. The gypsy lore is definitely a personal favorite spurred by supernatural shows from the 90s; gypsies are mortals with white magic abilities. Karolina Dalca, the main character, is half gypsy and half-vampire, so interspecies relationships can result in offspring with partial supernatural traits. I found this world fascinating and loved the creative interpretation of supernatural beings.
Karolina Dalca is a multifaceted character. I loved her fire and independence, as well as the fact that she is not afraid to tackle challenges head-on. At times, though, she is like horror movie characters who you find yourself fussing at for their awful choices—the type of character who goes down to the basement or out the back door. You know the type.
I enjoyed the dark and gritty tone of the story, which is mainly about the Vampire Russian Mob (so you should expect a lot of unsavory realness). This story definitely delivers. It skirts that line between horror and dark, but I never felt scared or disturbed. With more than its fair share of violence, some rather graphic, it reflects the graphic violent nature of vampires and gang/mobster activity.
The story has a good flow and naturalness to it that lends to the quick pace. I found myself rapidly flipping the pages to find out how things turn out and what would happen next. The suspense could have been generated a bit more organically in the action scenes. Still, otherwise, the tension builds in alignment with the pace.
If you are looking for a dark, gritty, unique take on the supernatural world, you must pick up this book. You will enjoy the creative twist while being captivated by the story as it unfolds.
Karo - a half-vampire - knows little of her supernatural family and heritage. When her mother is murdered and Kro becomes the prime suspect, she flees to her ancestral home in Eastern Europe with the help of one of her vampire brethren. Has she jumped from the frying pan and into the fire, or will she find sanctuary with her vampire family?
I found Karo's journey to clear her name and avenge her health, as well as how she is torn between her dreams of becoming an investigator and her vampire half, very intriguing and engaging. In many ways - amongst the violence, dark themes, and gritty themes - there is a story of self-discovery running through the novel, that at times was moving.
Dark Eyes is a great read for those - like me- who enjoy fantasy fiction but likes it a little darker than the usual YA and teen fiction. Thanks to lockdown I sped through the book in just a few days.
Dark Eyes throws the reader into a story of mystery and intrigue. Karolina is a half-vampire living in Canada with her mother training to be an investigator when her life completely falls apart. Accused of murder, she must go on the run and try to solve her family secrets and clear her name. I was captivated by Karo’s story immediately. Her relationship with her mother, Roman, and her grandparents were sweet and the mysteries surrounding her life pulled me in, desperate for more. I loved the juxtaposition between her relationship with Roman and her relationship with Andre. The world of magic created with charms, vampires, and werewolves was exciting and thrilling. If you enjoy paranormal romances and mysteries, I would definitely recommend this book.
A fast paced and enthralling dark mystery/fantasy that had me from the first page and I urge anyone who loves something dark and gritty to add this to their wish list. The author Mr Noble has an amazing imagination and knows just how to build up the tension and keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next! I totally enjoyed the plot, although I must warn you that it does contains quite a bit of violence and some pretty graphic scenes. A must read in my opinion.
‘The Charmed people of Romania stuck with their own’ – a tasty vampire novel debut
Canadian author M.R. Noble earned her degree in Nursing and has worked in community palliative care and mental heath nursing, and in government claims analysis. KAROLINA DALCA, DARK EYES is her debut novel, and serves as Book One of her proposed The Dark Eyes Series. A member of the Writers Community of York Region, she lives in southern Ontario, Canada.
The author has discovered a fine way to dangle a carrot in front of the reader of occult tales by placing the following before book’s entry: “Who are you anyway?” I asked. “Andre,” he said. “Private Investigator, but I’ll do anything for money.” He winked. “You’re not human,” I said. “What are you?” I stretched out my Charmed senses and felt magic within him. “I’m a vampire, princess. Same as you, but with a little extra superpower. I’m a full vamp though, and from what I can tell from your dismal amount of speed out there, you’re half.” He dragged a chair form the wall and sat across form me. “You have Dark Charm?” I asked. ‘I should have figured; you ooze sleaze bag.” Presto! and the author has us by the wrist and her initial entry into the heart of darkness (with innuendoes and wit) begins.
We meet Karolina Dalca – ‘I was born in Romania, but it never had the chance to be my home. Instead, I wound up in northern Ontario, completing an extra credit internship in my tiny town, staring down the face of an alleged flasher, I readied the paperwork before my mentor, Constable Danny, interviewed the perpetrator. It wasn’t an ideal way to spend the summer, but my psychological profiling exam blew up in flames – literally – and extra was the only way I would pass…My cell phone lit up with its silent ringtone. Mama called for the twentieth time, I hung up on her in an argument. She should’ve known better than to play with a vampire’s mood – half vampire or not…’
The book’s back cover condenses the story well: ‘Blindsided by an attack that destroys her home and blamed for murder, Karolina Dalca, a half-vampire, escapes, only to plunge into the magical societies from which she was sheltered. She vows to clear her name and avenge her mother's death, but Karo's family secrets aren't so easily left behind.’
The line between complete immersion in the creatures of the night fright and the magic of the author’s wit makes this initial volume of a series a tasty aperitif for more. M.R. Noble enters the literary stage with a wowser! Highly recommended.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes by M.R. Noble is an exhilarating read that explores the nuances of vampires as Karolina, or Karo for short, gets pulled into a world she was protected from. Karolina is a half-vampire and ultimately gets blamed for murder. Her world has been turned upside down, she gives up on her dream of being an investigator and leaves her internship. She runs, encountering the world from which she was sheltered for so long. She also meets up with a full vampire who she is not sure she can trust, but on some level, she must give in. This is a fast-paced read, with a good touch of humor among the pages, the vampire aspect is believable, well-executed, and not too over the top. You root for Karolina as she tries to even the score for her mother's death. Wicked, at times scary but fully enjoyable this is a must-read for those who enjoy the vampire genre and others newly acquainted with it. Highly recommend.
I read this book for a blog tour, so thank you to the blog tour organiser and the author for letting me take part in this tour and for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Trigger Warnings: death, blood-drinking, gore, decapitation, cutting bodies in half, fire, water, sparks of electricity, dead parents, war, violence, serious injuries, strong language and sexual relationships.
Right from the first page, I could tell this was going to be a really interesting and new take on vampires, werewolves, witches, power, and I was not wrong. I’m not sure if this is a series, but from the ending of this book, I think it is, and I’m so glad because I definitely want to read more from this world and these characters.
We don’t get to see much of Canada at the start of the book before the events that take Karolina to Romania, but when we do get to Romania and Russia, I actually quite liked what I read. We don’t get that much detail about the setting because this is a more character-driven book, but I did like the little details and the world that was imagined in my mind while I was reading.
Karolina is the main character in this book and while it took me a little time to get used to her and figure out if I liked her or not, she did end up growing on me. I think I struggled with her in the first few chapters because she felt a little rough around the edges in terms of development and detail, but once she got to Romania, I was able to picture her a lot easier and that’s when I got really invested in her. I really liked how unique a character she was depicted as. I mentioned above that I had never read a book with a half-vampire and half-witch character, so the fact that her magic was also very unique was cool. It was interesting seeing Karo trying to come to terms with the events of the book, trying to understand her feelings for other characters, and also try to understand her magic. I think she grew a lot in the book, so I’ll be interested to see more of her.
The thing I liked the most about this book I think was just how uniquely the characters were portrayed. I have read my fair share of books with vampires, werewolves and others, but I think this is one of the most unique depictions of both of those. I loved how the vampires were portrayed, they are as usual strong and nearly invincible, but they also have some other attributes that were really cool. I also really liked how Roman was described, he is not really a normal werewolf and I was especially intrigued by how he used his power to divert attention from them. I’m really hoping we have more unique traits like this in the sequel (I really hope there is one aha).
Overall, this was a really interesting and enjoyable urban fantasy with vampires, werewolves, complicated family relationships and magic. I was a little bit confused by some of the characters as I said above and I would have liked a little more description concerning the setting, but otherwise, I thought it was a very solid first instalment in what I hope will be a great series.
The writing style was simple but it kept me reading, it flowed nicely and I ended up reading the book in nearly one whole sitting. It was a quick, easy, fun and unique book that I really enjoyed reading. I also got really invested in our character trio and I hope to see them all together again soon. I do just have to say that this is quite a dark book, and it can get really violent, graphic and gory, so please make sure to check the trigger warnings at the top of my review before deciding to read it yourself.
I gave this book 4 stars and I really enjoyed it. As you know, I love books with vampires and I’ve been getting into urban fantasy more lately, so the mix of these two was really good, especially with how unique the vampires were. If you like urban fantasy visiting far-flung countries, characters on the run, adventure, complicated familial and political relationships, love triangles, vampires and werewolves, then this is the book for you! I highly recommend it.
This was the first time I've read anything by this author and i have to honestly say that it won't be my last! this was a great novel to read. It’s a fast paced read containing very interesting and unique characters and a great plot line, it does contain some dark and violent scenes which kept me on the edge of my seat but nothing too horrific! if you’re into the vampire/fantasy genre then this is a must read.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes is an outstanding 5-star debut novel that combines mythological creatures like vampires, werewolves and dryads and adds a thriller vibe in a fantasy setting.
The first thing that got my attention was the dedication:
This book is dedicated to every down-on-her-luck-woman out there who needs a reminder that her inner strength is the sharpest tool she has.
We see the story unfold from Karo’s perspective and get to experience a rollercoaster of emotions along with her. Karolina Dalca was born in Romania (which was exciting for me to hear considering I am Romanian), but then her mother moved to Canada. Now she dreams of being an investigator and works hard to achieve that. But her plans go awry when her mother is killed in the crossfire of a dryad hunt and the police blame her, forcing her to flee to Romania, looking for her father’s side of the family which is a mystery soon to be solved.
Karo is half vampire and half gypsy, so she combines the magic abilities of both – the vampire’s strength (and in her case, fire magic) and the gypsy’s earth magic. M.R. Noble’s vampires are born, not made and they can father children. I enjoyed this twist of the vampire lore.
She’s assisted by two men in her journey: Roman – a werewolf she’s known all her life and Andre – a vampire sent by her uncle who gains her trust by helping her out of a difficult situation. A well-balanced love triangle starts forming as the trio is on the run and fighting to evade the assassins sent by Karo’s other uncle.
The story reads as a thriller in a fantasy setting. Karo is a very likable character although at times she makes some questionable decisions that put her in danger.
In her quest, Karo gets dragged through the underbelly of the Easter European vampire society which is run pretty much like the mob. It’s an unpleasant world hidden from unsuspecting humans, with gory details typical of vampire horrors.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes by M.R. Noble, is an interesting novel of a young woman who grew up knowing her father was a vampire and her mother’s family practiced the magic of gypsies. But when the day came, when her parents’ past caught up with her mother, it devastated Karolina by the fall-out. The only thing left was to find her father’s family, whom she never met in the old country. Lucky for her, a vampire, Andre, was more than willing to be her guide back to meet her uncle. She was fortunate she could shake her werewolf friend, because secrets surrounding her were more than she could have expected.
I found Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes mesmerizing as M.R. Noble involves an epic fight between many magical beings. Just as Karolina masters one set of gifts given on her by her heritage, she is entrapped by an unseen ruler in a dark circle of lies. Supernatural readers will find this novel enticing. I hope the author writes a sequel to this book.
1st thank you to the author and TheWriteReads for the ARC copy.
Haven't read a vampire novel in a long time i was very pleased with this book, it had a really fast pace to the point that i didn't realize that i had read half of it in about 2 hrs. however even with the fast pace i wished it was longer so that i can explore more, the story felt rushed due to it being short, and i kept craving more, hopefully the sequel will be a bit longer with more exploration of Karo's personality and development, as well as her personal feelings and struggle with the delicious love triangle. Here is to more of our beautiful dark eyed little vampire.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes (The Dark Eyes) by M.R. Noble
I received a copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Karolina Dalca lives in Northern Ontario, Canada with her mother and the intention of becoming a police officer. All she needs is to complete an internship to pay for university residence. Seems enough for any 19 year old, but Karolina has other issues to contend with, being half-vampire, existing on “ bunnies “, wielding fire magic, to name a few. Her attractive best friend is Roman Lupei, a werewolf, their families emigrated together from Romania with expectation of the pair forming a couple. Unexpectedly her mother is killed and Karolina is forced to seek help from an address that her mother leaves her on a torn piece of paper. When Andre, a mysterious vampire promises to help her, can she really trust him?
On starting the novel I assumed it would be similar to other vampire-themed stories but it was interesting to discover the added “ charms “ complete with a myriad of magical and mysterious elemnts. It caught me unawares and the reader is literally thrown in at the deep end from beginning to end. With the intense creative writing style, I had only reached chapter two and I already felt as if I had been eaten, chewed up and spat back out!
There is a fast-pace, focusing on charcter goals which encourages the imagination to run wild. The choreography of the fighting scenes creates a compelling reading experience and each action is very much constant, just having recovered from one episode only to be catapulted into the next with the reader left panting for air.
The book ends on a tanatlising cliffhanger and I hope we get to read more about Karolina's exploits soon!
*****Spoiler Alert***** Classic story of good and evil. Karolina- a half-vampire with fire magic, escapes Canada after her mother's death, hoping to seek revenge. Instead, she is pulled between two men, Roman-a werewolf, and Andre-a full vampire. While in Romania, she discovers information about her parents, both now dead. She is forced to spy for Russia in order to get her father's inheritance. Karo is torn about her feelings and what she should do. I am not into vampire stories, but this one seems interesting if you enjoy them. It also sets up nicely for a sequel.
“A star becomes a sun, under the pressure of darkness,” - Karo
Karolina Dalca is a hybrid; half vampire, half Gypsy. Raised in the arts of Earth magic, Karolina has yearned to know about her father, a man she's never met. Her mother can't or won't tell her, so Karolina is left with shadows and myths....
When her mother is killed by monsters not of this world, Karolina is thrust into a new reality, one of constant danger... And unexpected desire....
“The greatest monsters in the world are the ones we ourselves have created.” - Karo
Karolina Dalca - half vampire, half gypsy who possesses fire magic - her world falls apart when her home along with her mother goes up in flames. Knowing she would be blamed for the death of her mother, Karo decides to run! She travels along with her best friend Roman to discover the truth behind her fathers family and her Vampire side, why she has fire magic? I loved the strong character of Karo with her good versus evil nature. If you enjoy a supernatural story with vampires, werewolves and magic you will love this series. Dark eyes is the first book of the series which already I am hooked on!
Initially, when I started reading the story, I did not know how to feel. There are many things to get the hang of, like “Dyads” and “Forged” and the various “Charms.” Moreover, the author dwells right into the action before we even know to get to know the characters correctly.
However, once I got past the first two chapters, I could not put this book down. It has been a while since I read a gripping supernatural tale of werewolves and shapeshifters, and this book was very entertaining!
Karo is a likable character, and you learn more about her as she goes on the quest to meet her Uncle. She shares dynamic chemistry with both her co-stars Roman and Andre. For some reason, I liked her angle with Andre more than Roman. The author writes the angst at an excellent, balanced level, which does not overtake the story’s plot. I also loved some of the supporting characters like Ina and Miruna.
The main highlight of the story is the action-adventure. There is never a dull moment in the book, as there something happens to Karo in nearly every chapter. From facing storms at sea to high-speed chases at the Parade, the author keeps the reader on their toes. While I love character development, this is one of the few books where I thoroughly looked forward to the adventure. The climax is epic, concludes the story wonderfully, and sets the next book’s pace in the series.
As I mentioned earlier, my four-star review’s only reason is the initial bumpiness in setting up the plot. I could not put this book down once Bronwyn enters the picture and Karo runs for her life. Overall, “Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes” is a gripping supernatural fantasy that I could not put down.
To begin with, I will say the book was interesting and I was invested in the story as I really wanted to know what will happen to the main character Karolina Dalca. I have read a ton of vampire stories, werewolf stories and stories revolving around magic but this I think is the first one where there is so much all put together. But vampires with magic? That’s a first and points for creativity for Ms Noble on that.
The writing was simple and with my hectic and exhausting schedule these days this simple and fun story was what I needed. I finished the book in way lesser time than I had initially planned (Seeing that it was taking ages for me to finish a book these days).
The characters range from annoying to good.
Our main character Karolina Dalca, a part vampire, is certainly one of the kind of annoying ones because she does not want to sit down and think things through. Spontaneity has its charm but when one knows that so much depends on one’s actions, one must think things through as your putting so much up to go bonkers. Now while this aspect of Karolina was annoying, this kind of made her more human to me as well because do we all not experience (at least once) where we need to do something despite the consequences to the self?
Andre I liked since the beginning and even through the story enfolding and painting him in a dark light. I still believe in the character and that there is a back story to what may have resulted in his actions. Being an aged vampire (is that even a thing?) who looks like a late teen is suave and know how to get what he wants. His determination to succeed endears him to me.
Roman, the third character completing this triangle and someone I am not rooting for, is kind of a confusing character. The narration in the story keeps saying that Roman and Karolina are childhood friends and have known each other since forever but while Karolina is referred to as a teenager, Roman is never referred to as thus. Every mention of him is as a fully grown man. I am confused if that is a loop hole or if it is intended thus on account of him being a werewolf.
Whatever the case may be with Roman, the pairing I kept rooting for was Karolina and Andre because throughout the story I felt the ying and yang vibe with them. As in they just fit perfectly together so I am waiting to see where Noble takes this relationship to.
Lastly, the setting. The story takes us to 3 countries in total and does not really show even one of them to us. It leaves more room for our imagination to design the places the way we want them to be.
Overall, an interesting read and I am looking forward to book 2 in the Dark Eyes series.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes by M. R. Noble The Wild Rose Press, Inc. 2020 Cover art: Kristian Norris 201 pages Fiction. Fantasy, vampires
Karolina Dalca, "half vampire" Romanian Princess living in Canada, heir to the magic of the earth by maternal teaching and the magic of fire by paternal bloodline, is forced to flee to Rania, Romania, with Andre, a complete vampire that he has contacted her after the lethal attack by a group of monstrous creatures who, under her uncle's orders, have destroyed her home and murdered her mother.
In this first book of the Dark Eyes series, Margarita Rose Noble introduces a young woman who has been protected all her life from the past and from her own power, and who overnight has become not only a fugitive who seeks clearing her name and avenging her mother's death, but also a pivotal piece on the board of a foreign mafia that involves her, her longtime friend Roman, and a complete vampire whose intentions are not yet entirely clear, but in whom she is forced to trust to get to the root of all her problems.
With a simple, direct and very clear narrative, the story unfolds quickly between violent and well-achieved action scenes and meaty dialogues that show the personalities of its protagonists and the motivations behind their actions, while sowing the seeds of ties that could go beyond friendship and family.
Fast-paced plot, interesting themes, badass protagonist, and gripping twists…This book just kept giving and at the same time proving me wrong all throughout the book and I love it.
I should be honest and say that I was hesitant about this book. I love vampire stories but when I learned that this one has both wolves and vampires, I worried because twilight and I wasn’t a fan of that series. But thankfully, I didn’t let that stop me from joining the blog tour for this book because it proved me wrong. This is not twilight at all.
The book started with Karolina (Karo) with a bang that I was hooked right from that fire incident Karo had. Right then I was filled with questions I want answered. And from there, the pace just kept picking up and the story kept getting more intense. It is filled with so much action, it is impossible for me to be bored or to even think of putting it down. I read it in less than three hours.
The best part of this book is the magic system and the setting just second. The setting is interesting enough but I would have loved a much deeper look in all the places Karo and her friends went to or even the ones that are just mentioned. I felt like the book just touched the surface of those places. Plus, I want to know more about the Vampire Undergrounds in every country. That said, the magic system of this book is very interesting. There are dark and light magic, vampires, wolves and other mythical creatures, and Charm magic which is basically like elemental magic.
I loved how the author played with the vampire and wolf parts. There are few interesting things about these cliched paranormal creatures that the author added, such as the part where Karo and her friends used a wolf thing to make them undetected by their enemies. I think that’s really cool. There’s some refreshing take on the vampires as well which I can’t share to avoid spoilers. And that, blisses, is why this is not twilight at all despite having vampires and wolves. 🙂 Another fictional creatures that interest me is the Forged. I can’t describe them because 1.) it would be a bit spoiler how they were made and 2.) I personally need more descriptions than the book has given me. They were monster-like but I needed more descriptions.
I love Karo. I really didn’t connect with her personally but I thought she’s a badass. I also love that Karo’s existence is surrounded by mysteries. There is something about characters who are trying to learn about themselves because the people around them are keeping secrets. It’s like I want to be with them until they discover everything and that’s why I love Karo’s character.
There is a love triangle in this book so we have two other main characters – Andre and Roman. Andre is a mysterious vampire and Roman is a wolf who Karo grew up with. One is a stranger and one is a childhood friend. I find them both interesting and I understand why Karo is pulled towards both of them. The reasons are valid and not just some hormones. LOL. That’s why even though I’m not a fan of love triangles, it didn’t bother me in this book.
As I said in my one-sentence review, this book kept giving till the end and kept proving me wrong. I love all the twists and turns the book went. Sure, the twists and reveals weren’t that grand but still they kept me interested throughout the book. Mainly because it kept proving me wrong. Just when I reach some conclusion, the book would prove me wrong. I loved it. Like with the love interest, just when I think the other is the better choice, the book would prove me otherwise. So then I would agree with the book but then it will reveal something again that would make me change my conclusion. Again. I loved that this book made me realize I can’t trust my own judgement. LOL…
Aside from the minor issues I already mentioned, there is one scene I can’t quite accept. It happened very early in the story while Karo was in the run after the attack in their home and it involves Roman. I just couldn’t believe Roman and Karo did that in that moment. Maybe Karo was just too emotionally vulnerable after what happened but still, for me, that wasn’t the right time for that. Maybe I’m just too idealistic but the act wasn’t special at all considering what Karo had just went through.
Overall, this is such an enjoyable read. Despite my little issues, I highly recommend this book. It is fast-paced, has an interesting magic system, settings and intriguing characters. Whether you love fantasy, paranormal or contemporary with romance, you’ll love this book.
I have a huge weakness when it comes to vampire books. I consider them my guilty pleasure. This book truly satisfied me. It had vampires and other supernatural beings. I wasn't expecting the book to be this fast-paced honestly, but I loved every single second of it. I loved the male characters, Roman and Andre, and how different their relationship with the main character was. I am not sure who I would root for when it comes to romance as I feel I need to know more about them.
This is a start to a great series. I especially liked the authors writing style, since I found myself reading the book non-stop. It's easy to read and the humor was great. Sometimes even the chapter names were part of the humor. I was quite surprised towards the end, and can not wait to see where the author will go next.
This was like a very poorly constructed video game more than a book and Karolina was a robot, not a character. She had no emotions! NONE. She also had ZERO chemistry with Roman. In fact, all of her relationships were weird af. And the “plot” was just…absolutely ridiculous. Karolina’s mother is murdered in front of her eyes! Then she’s suddenly on the run because she thinks she’ll be framed for said murder! Then she has a tussle with a random vampire! Then they’re drinking each other’s blood and bonded! Then she’s flying in a weird 70s porn plane to Romania! Then they’re suddenly there and she’s getting into a random fight and killing a ton of people and having no qualms about it! Then her BFF/BF werewolf friend is inexplicably there too! Then a shipwreck; then Russia! Then a car chase! NOW SHE’S A WEREWOLF! Oh, here’s some body swapping!
It may sound fun, but it was absolutely not. It was disjointed and jarring and…NONE—exactly NONE—of it is ever explained or makes any sense. The magic system is not at all thought out, and it functions entirely however the plot needs it to in that moment, with no consistency or logical through line. It’s the equivalent of Poe yelling, “They fly now!” in The Rise of Skywalker (GARBAGE movie with similar plotting/pacing): This is happening now because we need it to! Don’t ask questions!
The writing was also very odd. It read very stilted and hollow, all while chugging along at 900 MPH without letting up. “I turned. I picked up the note. The note had writing on it. I closed my eyes. Then I moved. I opened the door. A bomb exploded! My fangs came out! I was in pain! Things hurt!” What?
Plus, the world building was…oh, wait, there wasn’t any.
I truly don’t know how this is rated so highly…or why I even read this.
Karo is half vampire and half gypsy but has been sheltered by her mother from her father’s (who she has not met) vampire history. Karo becomes a suspect when her mother is murdered and she finds herself on the run, this is where the adventure and danger begins! A brilliantly written, fast-paced, action-packed fantasy novel. There is a great variation on vampire / werewolf plots that I found refreshing and captivating. Highly recommended by me.
Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes by M. R. Noble 3.5 of 5.0 (I enjoyed it and would tell a friend about it.)
When the phrase “Delightfully Deflowered” is used in a story, it leads you to expect a particular type of book. Then you add vampires, werewolves, gypsies, and magic to this paranormal world, leading you to an urban fantasy feel. Follow this up with epic, violent battles, and you have the Karolina Dalca story wrapped up.
Karo is young, and this shows up frequently in her actions. She makes some odd choices in her quest to find her father and avenge her mother’s death. But, who knows what decisions any of us would make if we were a half-vampire, half-gypsy teen with a werewolf best-friend.
All joking aside, the story will definitely appeal to fans of the Paranormal and Urban-Fantasy genres. There are plenty of battles, angst, romance, and magic to keep the pages turning.
I received a copy of the book for a blog tour. This is my honest, unbiased opinion. You can find more about he book on my website.
Where to start? There’s so much I loved about this book! Page 4 is when I knew this book had me hooked. In these pages there’s edge of your seat thrilling action, a little mystery, and a healthy dose of snark. The unique heritage Karo has, was a great twist on both magic users and vampires. I couldn’t help but love Karo and her strength and how she refuses to cower even in the face of extreme circumstances. Following a strong vampire who claims to be working for an uncle she’s never met out of the country when she knows so little about the supernatural world might not be the best idea, but it is her best option. From there the story only become even more enthralling. I really hope to read more by this author in the future!!!
