Conversations on When Everything Is Missions: Recovering the Mission of the Church

Rate this book
In their first book, When Everything Is Missions, Denny Spitters and Matthew Ellison called us to refocus our gaze on the gospel and the Great Commission. The authors raised seven questions that shape how we think about and carry out the global mission of the Church. In this followup book, Conversations on When Everything Is Missions, more than 15 contributors add their voices. Each brings research, analysis and experience to the table. They reflect on how we got to the place where many sincere Christians believe everything is missions and address what it might take to put the gospel and the Great Commission back at the center of our global outreach efforts.

A very pointed discussion, with several articles, seeking to separate Missions from the idea that everyone is a missionary and being missional. Yes, we are all to share the gospel, and be about God's work, but not many are doing it cross-culturally, especially to those who have not yet heard about Jesus. Throughout they emphasize the need to target unreached peoples to help fulfill God's call to go to the nations. A thought provoking and convicting book (for me).

Contributors include J. D. Payne, Ted Esler, Jeff Jackson, Gary Corwin, Pam Arlund, James Mason, Jean Johnson, Jeff Lewis, Steve Beirn, David Platt, Mark Vowels, Dick Brogden, and Ed Stetzer as well as Denny Spitters and Matthew Ellison, who commissioned and coordinated the articles.

Many of the core articles were first published in Mission Frontiers. See https://www.missionfrontiers.org/issu....

As you might expect in a multi-author work of this time, there's some repetition between chapters. The previous book also covered much the same ground. But some of these pieces are stronger and come from people with more authority (training/education/experience). So I think this book is more persuasive/authorative than the first one. It adds more to the conversation.

Note that the articles do not tend to contradict each other; this is not meant to provide opposing views. A single opposing article was dropped before publication because it seemed unfair to that author. But each piece has its own angle supporting the overall thesis. You could pick one or two to read and discuss with a group.
