Lola Vasquez is a stone-cold killer. She leads the Crenshaw Six, a street gang in South Central L.A. She deals heroin which is taking a terrible toll on her neighborhood and on the country as a whole. Her brother is serving time in prison for a murder that Lola committed, and by almost any definition, she's a terrible excuse for a human being. And yet, in a very perverse sort of way, you can't help rooting for her, or at least I couldn't.
Lola is also the mother of a young daughter, and she's trying desperately to make a better life for her than the one that Lola endured as the child of an addicted mother who pimped her out for drugs. Lola came up the hard way, and is living life the only way that she knows how. It's impossible to know who to trust, and in Lola's world, alliances may shift in a heartbeat. But when a rival gang attempts to move in on her territory, Lola is forced to lead her gang to war in a conflict that will have grave consequences for herself, for her gang, and most especially for her family.
It's refreshing to see a book like this with a kick-ass female protagonist who is also a leader of men. The story speeds along at a rocket's pace but at the same time it also provokes the reader to slow down and to think very carefully about Lola and her story and about the moral implications of it all.
I'm sorry to say that I came to this book not knowing that it was the second in a series until it was too late, and so I'm sure I missed a lot about the character's development that would have helped a lot in reading this one. In particular, I'm curious about how Lola came to lead the Crenshaw Six. I would have assumed that a group of tough, macho, male street gang members would have never accepted a woman as a leader, and I'd love to know how that came about. I'll be looking eagerly now for Lola, the first book in the series. In the meantime, I really loved this book and, in many ways, I really admired Lola too, in spite of her obvious flaws.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Lola, I was eager to read American Heroin, the stunning sequel; boy oh boy can Ms Love write. Wow. Main character Lola is unforgettable, and despite her being a stone-cold killer you can't help but admire how she manages to reconcile the vastly different sides of her personality. The author has once again crafted a truly thrilling, gripping story which is as much a character study of Lola than anything plot-driven. This is a gritty, all-action tale with plenty of high-octane surprises throughout, but I feel that it's essential to read the first novel before this to ensure understanding of what's happening.
American Heroin will make a junkie out of you as its simply impossible to put down once started. There is plenty of bloodshed and graphics violence as well as profanity, so if that's not your bag I would skip this one. I liked Lola a lot as she has managed to not only survive in a male-dominated environment, but she has also thrived. She's a no-nonsense realist which I found most refreshing too; there's no sugar-coating. The depiction of the drug world and the players within it seemed fastidious and well-researched; the situations Lola gets herself into certainly get your blood pumping. I look forward to the next instalment.

Lola Vasquez, single mom, abused as a child, and also, a powerful drug lord. Much like the book and TV show Dexter, I find myself rooting for Lola even when she is engaged in reprehensible behavior. And then she turns around and bestows kindness and charity on those who desperately need it. I read "Lola," the first book and an Edgar nominee. I loved the book and am glad I decided to read this one, too. Fast-paced, at times violent, we see Lola deal with crime, racism and misogyny as well as struggling with being a single mom to an adopted daughter who had been pimped out by her addict mother. On top of all that, she is trying to avoid a war with a Mexican Drug Cartel! It's a great read.

I loved the first Lola book with all my heart. I mean, if I ever wanted to be a stone cold gang queen, I would totally be Lola. And I was so excited to read this sequel.
And now I’m sad.
Lola apparently wants to be Lily - Lily White, that is.
Yes, we have power plays, drugs, violence, and family vs. duty. All the things that made the first book so great. And, yes, Lola will still do anything to just about anyone if it fits her slightly skewed morals.
But now…she wants to be white.
Our amazing Latina Queen is disdaining tortillas for chicken parmigiana (hey, I like parm – but there’s nothing wrong with Mexican food). She encourages her daughter's white friends and the white school and even decides to get herself a not-so-little white dude to play with. And even when she acknowledges the racism that comes in that particular playground, she still ends up striving for dreams of the perfect white neighborhood and a latte to go with it.
I didn’t like it and I didn’t like her.
Diverse characters = good.
Diverse characters who, at heart, don’t want to be so diverse = not so good.
Is this the last book? Not sure, but it’s probably the last one I read in this series.

Ms. Scrivner Love's first book Lola had been on my TBR pile for a while and I read that quick as a bunny before starting American Heroin. Usually I have little trouble dropping into a series without reading the previous books, but in this case I think it is imperative to read them in order. While these books are marketed as mystery/thrillers, they are very much character driven stories into a world so totally alien to my own that starting from the beginning was an absolute necessity for me.
The story was very fast paced and nearly non-stop action and picked up almost immediately after Lola (1st book) ended. The action was horrific and somewhat graphic. There was vulgar language... but I felt it to be used as an organic element of the story. It was Lola's character that left me open-mouthed awestruck. While she very much yearned for a different life from the one she has, she was a total realist about it. Enough of her own internal dialogue was presented so as to explain her actions and motivations. While her personal loyalties might temporarily get in her way, she ultimately understood that and was eventually able to overcome them to act in accordance with her own moral code, even while hating the necessity of doing so.
I do hope that Ms. Scrivner Love is busy writing the nest installment of this series. There are certainly some unanswered questions in American Heroin and a truly compelling character.

Surprisingly, I am.
Lola is savage. Completely brutal and stone-fisted in her growing drug empire, but generous and protective to those in her South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. She runs the Crenshaw Six gang like. a. Boss
I found out about halfway through the book that this is the second in a series, but- too late. I'm hooked. There was no way I wasn't going to finish American Heroin. I couldn't put it down.
Lola is a BADASS. Lola is everything I didn't know I wanted in a female MC. She's edgy and smart. She balances motherhood and cartel drug wars admirably. And she is no less formidable because of her family values.
She's a laudable example of faultless character depth and development. Very realistic.
I've been utterly overtaken by her character, her personality is dominating. Resistance is futile. The drug that is Lola has hit my bloodstream, and now I'm a junkie looking for my next fix.
Book one is now a necessity for me, and I hope there will be a book three.

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. I wanted to like it but I couldn’t get into the story. It was fast paced and moved quickly but the writings not good. Also I wish I knew more about what occurred in the previous book.

Das Buch ist angenehm zu lesen, da es nicht zu schwierig ist. Ich finde, dass der Spannungsaufbau sehr gut gelungen ist und man richtig mit fiebern konnte. Ich finde den Charakter von Lola sehr interessant. Von aussen so leicht zu unterschätzen, dass man nie auf die Idee käme wer sie wirklich ist. Ich hätte jedoch gerne noch mehr in die Tiefe bei den anderen Charakteren geblickt. Ganz am Anfang des Buches braucht man ein bisschen bis man im Buch drin ist und es einen fesselt weiter zu lesen, doch wenn man diese Hürde einmal übersprungen hat, ist es sehr spannend. Ich finde es toll, dass es eine weibliche Hauptfigur hat, welche so stark und mutig ist, denn ich glaube viele hätten ihre Stärke gern, auch wenn sie in ihrem realen Leben nichts mit den Themen zu tun haben wie Lola. Es ist zudem sehr spannend, wie sie mit ihrer Pflegetochter Lucy umgeht.

“American Heroin” by Melissa Scrivner Love is the second book in the “Lola Vasquez” series. This book does stand on its own, but it would be an advantage to have read the first book, “Lola” to have a better understanding of the background and the characters. Readers are immediately immersed in Lola’s violent and intense world of drugs, violence, and deception. She is the boss, and she is determined to remain the boss no matter who is in her way.
Love paints Lola as a gritty and yet somehow strong and compelling cartel boss. The pace is fast, the action is uncompromising, and the results are brutal. The language matches her position -- graphic, violent, and explicit. It is not a book for the casual reader or for feel-good entertainment.
Love also contrasts Lola’s fearsome presence with the local geography.
I include a caution for graphic language and violence, but it is certainly within the scope of what could be expected from the characters. The story is wild, harsh, and at times very complex, but once readers start, they will be compelled to finish. Malibu, this far north of the Santa Monica Pier and the littering tourists that swarm it, the sand is as clean and white as the caps that top the waves crashing and pulling back, crashing and pulling back. Lola wants to get her feet wet, but she knows the water will be too cold.

For once, I really am glad I began reading the saga of Lola, the leader of a South Central Los Angeles gang known as the Crenshaw Six, in proper order. Melissa Scrivner Love's excellent first book, Lola, introduces this shockingly well written character to the reader. Now, in American Heroin, we get to see where things have led since that debut novel. And strap in, 'cause the action and story will take you for a ride.
Lola has graduated from a small-time drug-pushing gang leader to become the queen of her neighborhood, responsible for the well-being of it's denizens and her adopted per-adolescent daughter, Lucy. Lola rules her turf with an iron fist, but is quick to provide favors to the downtrodden people around her: the brown skinned families for whom the privileges provided by money are unknown. Yet Lola, rich beyond reason from her burgeoning drug sales, sends Lucy to private school, where she still doesn't entirely fit in. And it is there, where Lucy is influenced by the spoiled and privileged white classmates who befriend her, that Lola's own personal dilemma comes into focus: to provide her with a better life than she had growing up, but at what price?
Lola's world will become much more complex than handling the vagaries of rearing a daughter, as she inadvertently sparks a war with a cartel that will threaten Lola's turf dominance and very existence. Lola faces an increasingly complex situation as she discovers her cartel nemesis might be just the tip of the iceberg. He brother, whom she sacrificed to prison in the first book, re-emerges, now a man with a very questionable set of loyalties. As if Lola didn't have enough on her plate, she discovers that her "silent" partner, Andrea, an assistant DA, actually has a mysterious past that Lola must discover before all is said and done.
This is a very well written, densely plotted, fast-paced story that has the ability to please and repulse the reader within a span of just a few pages. The author has delivered a great sense of place, along with characters that are multi-faceted, and clearly rendered. Lola is a killer, coarse, angry, yet vulnerable and a character that you will find yourself rooting for, even if it's against your best judgment. The story concludes on a surprising note, probably leaving room for yet another in the series, which bothered me just a little bit. On the whole, however, this is a really well done book and a solid 4 stars.

Anfangs hatte ich Zweifel, ob ich mit der Geschichte viel anfangen kann, da Drogengeschichten nicht so mein Fall sind. Glücklicherweise ist die Protagonistin zwar die Anführerin eines Kartells, aber die Drogen liegen nicht so sehr im Fokus der Handlung. Daher hat er Vergnügen bereitet weiterzulesen.
Die Protagonistin kommt sehr sympathisch rüber und handelt konsequent zu ihren Moralvorstellungen. Das Einzige was bei mir ein wenig Missfallen ausgelöst hat, war ihre Beziehung zu ihrem „Geliebten“. Ich kann einfach nicht nachvollziehen, warum selbstständige, emanzipierte Frauen in Büchern Männer immer nur für Sex benutzen und keine „festen Bindungen“ wollen. Sollte denn nicht beides gehen?
Die anderen Charaktere in dem Buch werden mir leider nicht ausführlich genug beschrieben, um eine Aussage über sie treffen zu können.
Die Grundidee ist nicht wirklich innovativ, aber meiner Meinung nach gut umgesetzt. Alles in allem ist es ein solides Buch, mit dem man entspannen kann.

I liked this as much as the first in the series. Reads like a television show, strong female voice. The relationship between Lola and Lucy is particularly strong and well-done. Hope there will be more!

Eigentlich sind Thriller ja gar nicht so meine Favoriten, aber der hier ließ sich sehr gut und sehr einfach lesen. Dass es sich bei diesem Buch um den zweiten Teil gehandelt hat, den ich nicht kennen, störte zu keiner Zeit. Das wichtigste, was man aus dem Vorgänger wissen musste, wurde situationsbezogen kurz dargelegt und man hatte die nötigen Informationen zur Hand und konnte daher auch die jeweiligen Charaktere schnell einordnen.
Der Spannungsbogen war angenehm und zog sich nicht unnötig in die Länge. Sehr gefallen hat mir, dass zwei Geschichten erzählt wurden und am Ende dann auch endlich herauskam, wie diese zusammenhängen. Hier mag ich jedoch nicht zu viel dazu schreiben, um Spoiler zu vermeiden.
Zudem fand ich die Charakterkonzepte sehr gut durchdacht. Man lernt nicht unbedingt jede der Personen, die im Leben von Lola so vorkommen, auf's Detail genau kennen, aber das muss man auch nicht. Es wird sich auf den Plot konzentriert und darauf, wie Lola warum welche Entscheidungen trifft. Sie ist konsequent, kaltblütig und gleichzeitig eine liebevolle Mutter. So liebevoll es mit ihrem Job eben möglich ist.

I found the book to be a fast read, the chapters went by quickly and there were some interesting parts to the story. Lola is an interesting character and I was looking forward to the action-packed parts. Don’t get me wrong though, this book had a lot of issues.
There were occasionally parts of the book that made me wince at the writing. Some parts were either juvenile attempts at being literary, or silly metaphors, usually not making sense. Some things mentioned I found to be plain unbelievable... which ruined the book for me. Let me give some examples...
First, there was a statement about shooting heroin in between your toes when the other veins failed. That’s such an overused drug addiction reference but also a very silly misconception about iv drug use. I would assume the author of American Heroin would know more about heroin use or do some research. ??
Another detail I found unbelievable was when Lola visited her brother, Hector in prison, she had her cell phone with her. While I’ve never visited anyone in prison, I’m pretty sure you would not be allowed to bring your phone with you past security? *sigh*
The author also described Lola’s sexual relationship with a man, where Lola always frantically gets up and cleans after they sleep together, and her thoughts when she reflected on the relationship, her thoughts state, “Is that why she keeps going back to him? To increase her productivity?” Um... I mean WHAT!!?? Is this a joke? Last but not least, do you really expect a heroin addict to pay $25 a month for AOL? I mean c’mon!

This is a sequel to the author’s debut, Lola and picks up pretty much where that novel ended (just a few years have passed). Lola Vasquez has now been outed as leader of the Crenshaw Six street gang, and the gang itself has grown in size substantially (the six referring to the core members) and dominates the Los Angeles drug scene to a greater extent than before. With the gang’s expansion has come money, and lots of it, which Lola launders through a legal pot dispensary amongst other methods and uses to send her adopted daughter to a posh private school.
But with success has come risk, one such being that one might sell heroin to the wrong person and that this might have serious consequences. Lola has issued her gang with the directive not to sell to well-to-do white people. This isn’t because she holds them in any great esteem, but rather that should they overdose the police reaction tends to be severe. She’s well aware that the same cannot be said for when a non-white dies, but she is nothing if not practical. At the outset of American Heroin an SUV of young, wealthy, white college students arrive in Lola’s hood and one of her gang sell them heroin. I won’t divulge spoilers, but needless to say one of their number is the son of somebody very powerful indeed; when he overdoses, Lola’s predictions of dire consequences come to pass.
Lola has a soft spot for abused women and kids. One day a pregnant woman comes to see her to say that her husband is about to be released from prison. He used to beat her, and she fears he will now beat her child. By good fortune, Lola’s brother, Hector, is detained in the same prison as the husband (for a murder Lola in fact was responsible for, events which occurred in the previous title) and she contacts him now to order the hit. But Lola soon discovers that she’s been lied to, that the woman is not married to the man she has asked Lola to kill, is not even pregnant but had strapped padding to her stomach. Lola tries to call off the hit but too late. When she learns that the man her brother killed was in fact a founding member of a very dangerous Mexican cartel, one which now is set on revenge, she knows her troubles have only just begun.
The subplot of Lola’s attempts to bring up her adopted daughter and create a “normal” family life for her continues in this book from the last. Lola always had a keen awareness of racial disparity and this is sharpened in this title as she finds her attracted to the wealthy white father of one of her daughter’s schoolmates. All this adds to the nuance of the tale and fleshes out Lola Vasquez as a character.

Das Cover gefällt mir richtig gut. Wieder ist die Protagonistin vor der untergehenden Sonne zu sehen. Das passt sehr gut zum ersten Band, wo das auch schon der Fall war, diesmal ist das Cover allerdings mehr in Gelb gehalten, was mir gut gefällt. Inhaltlich geht es auch im zweiten Band um Lola und ihre Gang. Sie ist die Anführerin und das weiß inzwischen auch jeder. Sie versucht sich neben ihren Tätigkeiten als Bandenchefin so gut sie kann um ihre Tochter zu kümmern, die sich um ihre ganz eigenen Probleme sorgt. Alles läuft soweit gut, bis Lola einer Frau hilft und dadurch einen Bandenkrieg auslöst. Genau das, was sie nicht wollte.
Der Schreibstil der Autorin ist sehr speziell und schwierig zu beschreiben. Das war mir schon im ersten Band aufgefallen. Einerseits passt dieses abgehackte, kalte und emotionslose gut zu Lola, aus deren Perspektive die Geschichte erzählt wird, auf der anderen Seite ist es manchmal etwas schwer Handlungen nachzuvollziehen, Figuren zu verstehen und wirklich in die Geschichte eintauchen ist manchmal auch nicht so leicht. Einfach, weil die ganze Zeit durch den Schreibstil und die Zwiespältige Art der Protagonistin eine Art Hürde zwischen mir als Leserin und der Protagonistin steht, die ich aber realistisch finde, da wir beide in absolut unterschiedlichen Realitäten leben.
Mir hat die Geschichte wirklich gut gefallen, ich wurde gut unterhalten, es lag das ganze Buch über eine nicht unberechtigte Spannung in der Luft, was Lola als nächstes Unerwartetes tun würde bzw. etwas anderes Unerwartetes würde passieren. Für mich waren wenige Dinge vorhersehbar, einige Handlungsstränge habe ich nicht wirklich verstanden bzw. sie machten einfach nicht so viel Sinn oder hatten keinen näher zu bestimmenden Zweck. Vielleicht konnte ich ihn nur nicht erkennen, aber ich war oft im Laufe der Geschichte vergeblich auf der Suche nach den Verbindungen zwischen den Zeilen. Das hat teilweise meinen Lesefluss etwas gestört.
Es war allerdings schön die vielen bekannten Figuren wiederzutreffen, zu erfahren, wie es ihnen in der Zwischenzeit seit dem ersten Band ergangen ist, wie die neuen Bandenmitglieder sich eingefügt haben und welche neue Dynamik im Viertel herrscht. Auch die Beziehung zwischen Lola und Andrea hat wieder ganz neue Verbindungen und Verknüpfungen gezeigt. Insgesamt eine unerwartete, aber durchaus spannende und interessante Fortsetzung, die mir recht gut gefallen hat. Emotional konnte sie mich jetzt nicht so sehr berühren, weil man immer sehr im Zwiespalt ist, da auch Lola eine sehr zwiespältige Person ist. Mal die eiskalte Gangsterin und dann wieder total verständnisvoll. Vor allem am Ende zeigt sich, was für sie wirklich wichtig ist.

Inhalt:
Das Buch beginnt mit einer Szene, dass sich reiche Kids aus behüteten Elternhäusern, das erste Mal Drogen kaufen wollen. Da dies anscheinend noch keiner so richtig gemacht hat bzw. weiß wie es abläuft, sind sie sehr nervös. Als sie die Drogen dann letztendlich haben, taucht die Polizei auf und genau in dem Moment taucht Lola auf. Lola ist der Kopf eines Drogenkartells, die keineswegs alleine agiert, sondern eine Partnerin hat: Andrea. Andrea ist Staatsanwältin und selbst in Drogengeschäften verwickelt und hat anscheinend mittlerweile eigene Pläne. Lola selbst versucht immer das Beste für ihre Familie und vor allem für ihre Adoptivtochter Lucy. Doch sie kümmert sich auch um ihre Nachbarn und versucht, dass es allen gut geht, sofern es in ihrer Macht steht. Doch als eine Schwangere an ihrer Tür klopft und sie bittet ihren Mann zu ermorden, weil er sie schlägt, gerät das Leben von Lola ein bisschen aus den Fugen.
Meinung:
Der Beginn des Buches war richtig gut und hat Lust auf mehr gemacht. Doch dann sackte die Spannung etwas ab. Man lernt Lola ein bisschen näher kennen und wie sie arbeitet. Doch so ganz habe ich es nicht verstanden, dass Lola als knallharte Drogenbaronin unüberlegte Entscheidungen trifft. Dass sie der schwangeren Frau sofort glaubt und den Befehl zur Ermordung ihres Inhaftieren Ehemanns gibt, ohne die Frau zu überprüfen. Wer ist die Frau und stimmt auch was sie sagt? Klar ist es für die weitere Handlung wichtig, dass sie diese Entscheidung trifft, aber es kommt auch noch öfters vor, dass Lola Entscheidungen trifft, die nicht nachvollziehbar sind.
Der Schreibstil vom Buch war sehr gut, hat mir gut gefallen, man konnte die Kapitel auch schnell lesen, nur leider ist bei mir nicht wirklich viel Spannung aufgekommen. Deswegen hatte ich auch ziemlich viel Pause zwischen den Kapiteln bzw. bis ich das Buch fertig gelesen hatte. Mich hat es nicht so angespornt unbedingt zu wissen, wie es weitergeht. Wenn es nicht gerade illegale Geschäfte wären mit denen sich Lola und Andrea ihr Geld verdienen, würde ich sie bewundern. Zwei Frauen, die sich vor allem mit viel Grips und Mut in dieser Drogen-Männer-Welt durchsetzen: tolles Topic. Allerdings übernehmen sie dabei oft typisch männliche Verhaltensweisen, doch ohne sie können sie sich nicht durchsetzen.
Echt krass, wie Lola ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken Menschen opfert und Urteile spricht. Ebenso aber auch, dass sie allen im Viertel hilft. Sie ist die Königin dort. Ob sie wohl doch in das neue Haus umzieht? Würde sich dann nicht alles für sie ändern? Das werde ich wohl im nächsten Band lesen. Ich bin überzeugt, dass es noch einen geben wird.
So überraschend Lolas Aktionen oft für mich sind, für Andrea ist sie anscheinend recht vorhersehbar. Irgendwie wird dadurch Andrea zur Heldin dieses Buches.
Rassismus ist auch wieder ein großes Thema hier. Latinos als billige Arbeitskräfte oder als Quotenmutter in der Privatschule oder exotische Geliebte- Aber auch die Latinos haben viele Vorbehalte den Weißen gegenüber und bleiben gerne unter sich. Eigentlich genauso wie hier, nur dass die Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund woanders herkommen. Es ist ein hartes Buch über eine harte Welt.
Allerdings muss ich zugeben, dass mir der erste Band besser gefallen hat. Vielleicht wegen dem Twist, den es dort gab.
Einige kleine davon gab es auch hier, das ist einfach der spannende Stil der Autorin. Sie verrät oft wenig, einige Handlungen kommen mir unsinnig vor, aber nach ein paar Seiten denke: wie schlau!
Was mir gut gefallen hat waren die Sorgen als Mutter, mit denen sich Lola seit zwei Jahren herumschlägt. Lucy hat da noch ganz besondere Bedürfnisse, Lola kann sich gut hineinversetzen. Was die Mädchen da untereinander abziehen ist grauenvoll, passt aber sehr gut in die beschriebene (reale) sehr harte Welt.
Sehr unwahrscheinlich fand ich die Geschichte um Andreas Vater, also (Achtung Spoiler) als er wiederauftauchte. Als ob der Killer übersehen hätte, dass er noch lebt. Das glaube ich nicht.
Die gezielt eingesetzten Perspektivwechsel erhöhen die Spannung.

Ein Thriller voller Gegensätze:
- Lola, die knallharte, eiskalte Chefin einer Drogengang - gleichzeitig aber liebevolle Mutter und voller Hilfsbereitschaft für alle Armen und Schwachen.
- Lolas Wohnort Huntington Park, wo auf den Straßen Drogen verkauft werden und Schusswechsel stattfinden - und Culver City, wo sich die Schule von Lucy, Lolas Tochter, befindet und fast ausschließlich reiche Weiße wohnen.
- Andrea, Staatsanwältin, die sich einen Namen im Kampf gegen Missbrauch und häusliche Gewalt geschaffen hat - und gemeinsam mit Lola für den Drogenhandel verantwortlich ist.
Durch ihre Hilfsbereitschaft, die auch nicht vor Mord zurückschreckt, löst Lola unwissentlich einen Kartellkrieg aus, in den sie sogar ihren Bruder hineinzieht. Selbst ihre Partnerin scheint falsch zu spielen, sodass Lola sich gleichzeitig um mehrere Fronten kümmern muss. Und dann ist da noch die ständige Sorge um ihre Tochter.
Was diesen Thriller besonders macht, ist die Schilderung aus der Sicht einer Latina, die sich des ständigen Rassismus in der Gesellschaft bewusst ist und diesen entsprechend schildert. Ob es sich um Vorurteile gegenüber Latinos oder Frauen handelt - die Autorin Melissa Scrivner Love bringt es immer wieder durch ihre Hauptfigur zur Sprache und es ist erschreckend, wie Vieles von uns Nicht-Betroffenen schlicht nicht bemerkt wird. Auch macht Love überdeutlich, wie immens die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich ist und dass der 'American Dream' für die große Mehrheit immer ein Traum bleiben wird.
So gnadenlos hart wie die Handlung wirkt auch die Sprache und ich brauchte einige Zeit, bis ich mich daran gewöhnt hatte. Durchweg im Präsens, die Sätze häufig kurz und knapp, wenig Adjektive. Zwar passt es wirklich gut zu der Geschichte, aber so richtig begeistern konnte mich der Stil dennoch nicht.
Trotzdem: Ein wirklich spannender Thriller mit einer Hardboiled Protagonistin, die vor nichts zurückschreckt und sich auch mit einer Menge an Problemen unserer Zeit herumzuschlagen hat.

Durch ihre Hilfsbereitschaft, die auch nicht vor Mord zurückschreckt, löst Lola unwissentlich einen Kartellkrieg aus, in den sie sogar ihren Bruder hineinzieht. Selbst ihre Partnerin scheint falsch zu spielen, sodass Lola sich gleichzeitig um mehrere Fronten kümmern muss. Und dann ist da noch die ständige Sorge um ihre Tochter.
Was diesen Thriller besonders macht, ist die Schilderung aus der Sicht einer Latina, die sich des ständigen Rassismus in der Gesellschaft bewusst ist und diesen entsprechend schildert. Ob es sich um Vorurteile gegenüber Latinos oder Frauen handelt - die Autorin Melissa Scrivner Love bringt es immer wieder durch ihre Hauptfigur zur Sprache und es ist erschreckend, wie Vieles von uns Nicht-Betroffenen schlicht nicht bemerkt wird. Auch macht Love überdeutlich, wie immens die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich ist und dass der 'American Dream' für die große Mehrheit immer ein Traum bleiben wird.
So gnadenlos hart wie die Handlung wirkt auch die Sprache und ich brauchte einige Zeit, bis ich mich daran gewöhnt hatte. Durchweg im Präsens, die Sätze häufig kurz und knapp, wenig Adjektive. Zwar passt es wirklich gut zu der Geschichte, aber so richtig begeistern konnte mich der Stil dennoch nicht.
Trotzdem: Ein wirklich spannender Thriller mit einer Hardboiled Protagonistin, die vor nichts zurückschreckt und sich auch mit einer Menge an Problemen unserer Zeit herumzuschlagen hat.

tarke Frauenfiguren mit Grips sind in Narco-Thrillern eher die Ausnahme. Meist nur schmückendes Beiwerk oder in der Opferrolle, ohne das nötige Selbstvertrauen, das Schicksal selbst in die Hand zu nehmen. Erfrischend anders ist Lola Vasquez aus South Central L.A., ein Bad Ass wie sie im Buche steht und die „Capitana“, die Anführerin der Crenshaw Six Drogengang. Lola ist tough und fordert Loyalität von ihrem Umfeld, skrupellos, auch gegen sich selbst, wenn es darum geht, ihre Fußsoldaten zu beschützen. Aber unter ihrer rauen Schale steckt ein weicher Kern. Sie ist verletzlich, was ihren Kindheitserlebnissen geschuldet ist, Gewalt gegen Kinder und Frauen kann und will sie nicht tolerieren, ein absolutes No-Go.

This book is a sequel to Melissa Scriver Love’s Edgar Award nominated “Lola”. Unfortunately, I have not read “Lola” so I was likely missing some key elements of the backstory. However, “American Heroin” seems to work well as a standalone book.
The book focuses almost exclusively on Lola Vasquez, a tough, strong, uncompromising gang boss of a drug cartel based in Los Angeles. I admire strong female protagonists who not only survive but thrive in a “man’s world”. And the gritty and seamy side of the violent business of drugs and gang wars that typify this violent trade are explicated described in this book. The violence, explicit language and graphic depiction of Lola’s sexual encounters, which are based solely on need rather than love, may be offensive to some readers. However, the author is simply being realistic in her depictions of the violent and gritty world in which Lola lives and survives in her position as a drug boss.
There are some somewhat tedious and cliché-riddled side-stories that I found somewhat tedious and superfluous to the central story. There is some redundancy and some factual inaccuracies that are distracting. I would have liked to see more character development of characters other than Lola. However, overall, I enjoyed this book, especially as the pace picked up in the latter third or so of the book.

Zwischen all ihren legalen und weniger legalen Aktivitäten im multikulturellen Los Angeles droht sie immer wieder, sich selbst zu verlieren.
Auch wenn Drogen, Waffen, Gewalt und Blut Lolas Welt bestimmen, finden sich im Thriller auch immer wieder nachdenkliche, kritische Zeilen. Melissa Scrivner Love verbindet Lolas fiktives, aber wohl auf vielen realen Biografien fußendes Leben mit Gesellschaftskritik am Amerika der “Weißen Männer”. Rassismus, Armut und Verbrechen lauern hinter vielen Mauern und unscheinbaren Gesichtern.
Für einen echten Klassenkampf sind die Unterschiede zu groß, dennoch drückt man Lola und ihrer Gang immer wieder die Daumen gegen das System, das sie einerseits unterdrückt, in dem sie sich aber so gut wie möglich zurechtfinden und einfügen (um nicht aufzufallen und weiter ihre Geschäfte machen zu können).
Lolas Welt ist weit von unserer entfernt, ist illegal, gefährlich und weitestgehend unmoralisch. Aber als Charakter ist sie faszinierend und durch ihre Brille betrachtet, ist das was sie tut logisch und fast verständlich. Eine Anti-Heldin die für die Dauer des Buches als Heldin durchgeht. Eine toughe Frau die im Rahmen ihrer Möglichkeiten das Richtige tut.

The streets of South Central LA, are loaded with gun strapped gangsters and no corner is safe, especially when there is a rival gang hunting you out.
Lola took us on a journey of a different kind, one full of crime, homeboys, drugs and murder. I understand the first book was “Lola”, which I had not previously read. This book was strong as a stand alone book, even without the background. I did not even know “Lola” was a book, until I finished this book. This was a fast and fairly good read!

Lola is the head of south central LA drug empire. She now has significant money at her disposal which has allowed her to improve the lives of her family and those who live in her neighborhood. On one hand she is compassionate, but she also demands loyalty from her cartel and her neighbors. Everything is at risk when a new cartel want to overthrow her.
It feels strange to say I really liked Lola since she and her soldiers deal drugs. I think the reason I can say that is not much of the story is about actual drug deals. It is more about Lola learning to navigate this new world she lives in that money provides. She is caring towards her neighbors and works to share her wealth. And while she does not expect monetary repayment for her good deeds, she does expect to be able to one day come back and ask for a favor. She is very street smart and people wise. Does all of this make her career ok? I know I should say no, but somehow I can't.
I did not read the first book in the series, Lola. While this worked fine as a stand alone, I don't think it would be a bad idea for me to go back and read book #1 to give more perspective on Lola, who is a very complex character.

Lola, eine Drogenlady in den USA, hat ein einigermaßen gutes Leben. Sie ist ihr eigener Boss, hat ein paar Soldaten, die sie beschützen, eine Pflegetochter, die sie liebt und man könnte meinen, sie hat immer alles im Griff. Als sie jedoch eines Tages von einer schwangeren Frau gebeten wird, dafür zu sorgen, dass ihr gewalttätiger Ehemann nicht mehr aus dem Gefängnis entlassen werden kann, begeht Lola einen Fehler, der sie in einen Drogenkrieg führt. Schafft es Lola, ihre Lieben zu schützen? Und was hat es eigentlich mit Andrea auf sich, der Staatsanwältin, die im Drogengeschäft mitmitscht?
Teil eins über Lola kenne ich nicht, und trotzdem habe ich sehr schnell in die Geschichte reingefunden. Der Prolog beginnt besonders spannend und macht Lust darauf, richtig in die Geschichte einzutauchen. Die Protagonisten sind gut beschrieben und haben alle ihre eigene Persönlichkeit. Obwohl Lola richtig gefährlich ist, schließt man sie doch ins Herz, denn sie zeigt Seiten von sich, die daran erinnern, dass sie letzten Endes doch ein Mensch ist, all der Gewalt zu trotz. Die Spannung ist stets da und es gibt auch einige überraschende Wendungen. Ich habe das Buch in nur wenigen Tagen verschlungen und hoffe, dass es eine weitere Fortsetzung geben wird.

Auch der zweite Teil “Capitana” hat es wieder geschafft mich mit Protagonistin Lola zu begeistern. Ich mochte ihre Weiterentwicklung so die, der verschiedenen Charaktere und dessen Verbindungen. Aber vor allem mochte ich eben “Lola Vasquez” als Gangboss. Ich finde es klasse in so einer Rolle eine weibliche Protagonistin verfolgen zu können, die dazu weder perfekt noch unfehlbar ist. Sie ist authentisch und nicht zu übertrieben. Die Geschichte dabei ist brutal, sensibel, und bearbeitet nicht nur die “Straßengesetze” sondern setzt sich auch mit Diskriminierung und Rassismus auseinander. Der springende Schreibstil der Autorin, hat mich manchmal ein wenig zurückrudern lassen, um zu verstehen wo, wie und was jetzt eigentlich noch mal Phase ist. Trotzdem wird in “Capitana” meiner Meinung viel mehr auf die Charaktere und dessen Verbindung, oder Vergangenheit eingegangen, und verleiht damit der Geschichte viel Tiefe.

Sadly the book was a bit of a let-down. It wasn't bad by any means, and Scrivner-Love's writing style is as amazing as ever but it just couldn't compare to the first book. The first book was thrilling, high-stakes and we saw just how far Lola is willing to go to achieve her goals. This book didn't have that. I couldn't remember the main plot point bevause the book lost track if it so often. The only side character that gets explored is Lucy. The gang is completely in the Background, they're not doing anything at all. Manuel is often at Lola's sie but I still don't know anything about him except that he's bad at english.
It started to pick up around 70% into the book and makes it feel like the first book again with a plot twist I didn't expect.
But the last chapter takes away from that. It is sort of an epilogue, a cheesy happy ending, still leaving some questions open and making our two drug sellers, Lola and Andrea, out to be the good guys. They're selling heroin on the streets and killer peoole in cold blood. Lola even thought about killing the father of her daughter's friend just because said daughter is a little brat.
It started to pick up around 70% into the book and makes it feel like the first book again with a plot twist I didn't expect.
But the last chapter takes away from that. It is sort of an epilogue, a cheesy happy ending, still leaving some questions open and making our two drug sellers, Lola and Andrea, out to be the good guys. Very pleased to first learn that there was a continuation to Lola. A fantastic book. American Heroin follows and it is just as riveting and fantastic as the first.
Lola is a fierce and cold hearted leader. She takes no mercy. She can't in the ruthless drug fueled gang world that she is a part of...and then being a woman...double so that she has to be defiant and precise and brutal. Drug cartels show no mercy. Such a world that is so far from my own and yet here I am, the reader, rooting for Lola. How can one not?! You have to read the first book...and then this one to understand all of Lola and her world...although I can def see this book as a standalone and you'd still capture the same vibe. It's fast paced. It's erratic and intense and it's hard to put down.

Capitana ist ein Thriller über Eine Gang-Leaderin namens Lola Vasquez. Viele werden ja sicherlich die Serie Breaking Bad kennen und ich war großer Fan von der Story. Dieses Buch gefiel mir genauso gut weil die Geschichte super ausgearbeitet ist. Sie hat mich gefangen genommen und ich mochte Lola wirklich sehr, obwohl sie ja die blutrünstige Chefin ist. Der Zweispalt den ich da hatte gefiel mir sehr gut.
Der Schreibstil war gut und leicht zu lesen. Ich kam schnell in die Geschichte rein und wurde auch während der gesamten Geschichte gut unterhalten und gefesselt. Das ist mir bei Thrillern immer sehr wichtig.
Die Aufmachung wurde sehr gut gewählt. Die gleiche Farbwelt mit der auffälligen weißen Schrift ist gut getroffen.
Ich empfehle das Buch absolut weiter für Fans von Thrillern und Mafiageschichten und vergebe die volle Punktzahl für dieses gelungene Buch.
