First I want to say that I thought this book was very good, but I just did not like it. I like 'cosy' mysteries and there is nothing cosy about this read. The author is an expert in developing suspense and the story line is strong but it is pretty grim. The protagonist is a clinical psychologist who becomes involved with assisting the police in the Bristol area of England. The relationship he has with the police officers assigned to the case is somewhat difficult but his expertise does in fact lead them to the killer, but not before more bodies are found and his own family is threatened. A great read if you have the stomach for it....I don't.
I admit, I liked this book even though I didn’t want to like it. I do love psychological mysteries and this was certainly one. In fact, it became a battle between two men, one a psychologist and the other a specialist in torture who knew how to break (I.e., shatter) people’s minds. My objection to the plot was that, as usual, women were his victims. By book’s end, though, it becomes clear that the villain specializes in shattering anyone who stands in the way of getting his daughter back. This was definitely suspenseful and compelling.
As always Michael Rowbotham has written a suspenseful and attention holding story. The temptation is to speed through to reveal the mysteries but slow down and let it unfold. It's worth it.
