Mille is aboard the ferry headed for Sweden, and so is the living dead. She tries desperately to stop the infection from spreading before the ferry reaches its destination.
By Day 5, the infection has reached several countries across Europe, leaving death and chaos in its wake. The fate of the world seems still closer to the brink.
I write stories about the apocalypse so that I don't need to work a real job. I grew up reading Stephen King and still haven't fully recovered. I'm currently ending the world in my new series Under the Breaking Sky.

The Dead Meat series started out as novellas and I am so excited that Nick Clausen has so much to share that now he has a full scale novel.
Nick Clausen takes a view from current events and expands on his Zombie virus, crossing borders and hop skipping across the water. He introduces new characters, some that I quickly grew to care for, and, of course, he is not afraid to kill them off. Goes to show ya, when your time is up, it is up.
Bloody, gory, horrific, people come and people, go, zombies walk and zombies fall, everything I look for in a good zombie story. Non stop blood and guts action, killing those who get bitten or scratched.
City to city, country to country, the virus spreads like wildfire, with no one able to curb the spread, let alone stop it.
You will want to read the series in order and I can hardly wait to see where Nick Clausen takes me next.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Dead Meat: Day 5 by Nick Clausen.
Millie knows it’s only a matter of time before the infection spreads. She’s seen the scratch on her mother’s boyfriend. But there is nowhere to go. Trapped on a ferry bound for Sweden, Millie does all she can to contain the impending zombie outbreak. But people all over the country are trying to escape, and inevitably the infection will spread.
The Dead Meat series has captured a zombie outbreak in startling detail. As readers enter Day 5 it’s clear widespread panic is settling in. No matter what the news may say, people are beginning to realize just how much trouble they are in. And as they try to flee the center of infection, more and more mistakes are made.
Nick Clausen never fails to introduce new scenarios and character types. This time around readers are introduced to a group of friends eager to see a real zombie. But the inebriated trio soon finds that high-fiving a zombie is not the best idea. And as they deal with the consequences of their actions, more innocents are infected in the process.
And every story eventually ties back to the core group of characters fighting to survive. As more and more storylines merge into theirs, a diverse cast of characters is formed. Each with their strengths contributing to their survival. Although some may be better off left to fend for themselves. Not everyone has the group’s survival first and foremost in their mind. Some simply are looking out for themselves.
Dead Meat Day 5 is a story of humanity’s downfall. Readers will be immersed in a dystopian world, crumbling around the characters at an increasing rate. And with each passing day, the page count grows as more details are added in to show how damaged the world is becoming. Readers who enjoy fast-paced zombie reads, pick up this series.
In Day 5 of the Dead Meat series, the zombie crisis continues to spin out of control. A ragtag team of survivors seek to escape the insanity, but can they make it out in one piece, or will they just be more fuel for the end of the human race?
This is the longest book in the series to date, and I had a lot of fun reading this one, though I'll admit it wasn't my favorite.
Throughout the books, we've had some really good protagonists, some of which died along the way. It was really great to see those that have made it thus far band together towards a united goal. Dan and William are still my favorites, and I loved their witty back and forth. I honestly wish they were gay. They would be such a power couple! The main supporting characters were fun too.
I will say there were some very minor characters whose POV's I felt could've been left out altogether, but it did still contribute a little to the overall story.
I think my biggest quibble with this book is that none of the characters really gave much thought to weapons until this point. Believe me, I totally get pacifism, but the first thing I think of on the subject of zombies is how to defend myself. Maybe my mentality is a bit different, but I just didn't find it believable. They should have at least considered some weapons or at least had something blunt or sharp to fight with.
The plot was pretty much nonstop insanity, which I live for in a zombie story. There are a lot of different action scenes, bloody massacres, and plenty of unique surroundings to keep things fresh, and I was living for the chaos!
At this point I'm wondering if anywhere is truly safe for our heroes, and I can't wait to find out how the story unfolds in the next book. I'm definitely going to continue on with this series, and if you are new to it, give it a shot!
This is such a good installment in the series. The stakes are high as the “virus” is spreading while authorities act too late when trying to contain it. This book is longer than the previous but there’s no dull moments and we have a wider array of characters.
My heart was racing and the adrenaline running as I was completely glued to the pages and the fates of these characters. There were many times I wanted to smack some sense into characters and there’s so much denial and false hope.
I was shocked by some events and heartbroken by others. It’s an intense story that feels very real. The ending has me on the edge of my seat highly anticipating the next book.

Review:
It is the perfect time of year for this instalment and the Dead Meat series in general! Day 4 left me in suspense so finally reading Day 5 was both exciting and a relief. I honestly feel like I’ve been on a journey with these books, reading day at a time so I couldn’t wait to get stuck back in and continue it.
I was interested to see where the virus had spread too, so the little map before the story starts was a welcome as usual. The visual representation of how the virus is spreading really helps with imagery.
I usually connect well with Nick’s writing style and once again I was not disappointed. His tone is very down to earth and easy which makes Dead Meat quite a laid-back series regardless of the chaos going on in it. Day 5 being a bigger instalment was also a welcomed surprise, but at the same time it wasn’t too long either, the perfect balance.
When reading chapter 1, I could instantly feel the character’s panic which hooked me right in. I also loved how we were straight back into the action too, literally picking up where we left off. You could really feel the tension rising and this continued throughout.
With the ongoing pandemic and how it has affected people in many different ways made Dead Meat 5 very relatable. Things seem a little more real, especially the lockdowns, and the ignorance of human beings in times like this. I just hope however the zombies do stay in the book!
The story is told from different character perspectives which are easy to follow and clear. It took me a few chapters to remember and reconnect with the characters but a few chapters in and everything was fine. A word of advice to any future readers however is not to get attached to anyone, I keep making the same mistake but hopefully I’ll learn my lesson ready for Day 6! Nick also does a clever job at making little links to the characters so the story falls into place, his thinking is brilliant.
I like how all the characters have different backgrounds but despite this are all facing the same shit, no matter who you are, there is no easy way out. What I also noticed too was as these characters panicked, I could feel my reading getting faster to match their emotional states. You could generally feel their desperation at times.
The chapters are a nice length which makes the pace perfect for this story. Many of the chapters are also action packed and as the story moves on you can begin to feel the seriousness of the situation. I have to say, Nick also did a fantastic job at catching me off guard! Some of the events weren’t expected and actually shocked me a little.
Once again, at the end we are left hanging and wanting more, typical Nick Clausen style! I honestly can’t wait for the next instalment and if you haven’t read these books yet, I suggest you do!
I'm not usually one for zombie apocalypse books, but this series really sucked me in, especially with the unique take on how the zombies originated. Plus, it's kept me on the edge of my seat, tense with anxiety up to this point. However, I've got to admit that it's dragging on a bit for me. I understand the need to build up the tension, and obviously, the plague can't be contained (we've seen that from our own battle with COVID-19), so that's also got to be dealt with. There's also a lot of world-building and character development that needs to take place. But honestly, I was seriously disappointed with people's decisions in this book when the right choices seem blatantly obvious to us as the readers (and the fact that characters I'd really grown to like got killed off). But I plan on sticking it out because I've come this far and I really want to see how Clausen resolves this series and if the world ends or not.
Prepare for the next installment of Nick Clausen’s zombie apocalypse series with his newest addition of Dead Meat: Day 5. The zombie virus is spreading across Europe. The authorities are taking action much too late to try and contain the “virus.” Citizens are on the run to try and reach a safe haven. Some are completely innocent, while others are operating under the delusion that their loved ones who have become infected can be saved. The virus is spreading like wildfire and old and new characters are each on their own journey in the hopes of finding a safe haven and staying alive. Are you ready to learn what happens next? I am an avid fan of horror stories, so I have been eagerly anticipating the next installment to this series. This book is a bit longer than the preceding books, but it has a lot of good elements and moments to it. The author starts the book off with some new characters in order to bring some…fresh blood into the series. So to speak. LOL! A family with two young children finds the virus knocking at their windows as the beings that were once human seek to gain entry to feed their insatiable hunger. Here and there throughout the book the author reconnects readers with familiar characters from previous books as they race against time and other people to get to safety. The anticipation builds as those in power in the story begin to declare a state of emergency and close borders in attempts to contain the virus. You still have some who are claiming the infected are simply “sick” and can be cured. Planting seeds of false hope and misinformation. There are some characters that I am more invested in than others so I’m always eager to get back to those and learn what happens next. As this is a horror story this book is full of tragedy, which is to be expected. I had hoped that certain characters would be able to make it, but their lives are tragically cut short. My jaw probably dropped a couple times, but I love that I reacted the same way that the characters did in certain situations. It was almost like I was there with them, though I know I’d have gone “off-script” in some places and decked a dude. LOL! You really get a wide spectrum with this book. You get some humor, lots of thrills, tons of danger, of course, tragedy, and towards the end…a tiny grain of hope. While I enjoyed this book I felt that some of the characters made some really bad decisions. The author has more than one become a “space cadet” of where they completely zone out of the moment putting themselves in serious danger and causing some situations to become even more dire. It annoyed me a bit because I feel that in some instances it was a stretch that someone is going to zone out to the extent that they do. They literally escape with their life by the skin of their teeth at times. Now, I’m probably a bit jaded for this, but from most of the zombie/apocalypse stories that I’ve read/watched it’s usually “every man for himself.” While that does make an appearance in this story, it’s not as frequent as I had thought it would start to be. Usually, it’s only families who are trying to save themselves and there are few and far between good Samaritans. In this installment, there are…quite a few with the exception of a couple characters. When one betrays a group to save his own hide, I find it a stretch that the group would then turn around and say “well, let’s let him come along anyway even though he almost got us all killed.” It’s a stretch and hard to believe. This book continues with the author’s cliffhanger endings and the way that the book ends is quite thrilling to say the least. Lots of the characters we’re following are in immediate danger and I’m eager to learn how they handle it and what happens next. I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The pace was a bit slower and it wasn’t as thrilling as the first few books in the series. I’m hoping that with the virus spreading farther and wider that the book’s pace will pick up and the thrill of the horror will come back as well. If you have read the series thus far and enjoyed it then I encourage you to pick this book up and find out what is happening to the characters that you have become familiar with.
In Day 5 of the Dead Meat series, the zombie outbreak is continuing to spread. While the media continues to tell the public to stay calm, borders are closing and the public is quickly realizing that they need to get out or create a safe place as soon as possible.
Full disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating in any way.
THESE JUST KEEP GETTING MORE AND MORE INTENSE!
In my review of Day 4, I noted how out of control things are getting, and I loved that it ramped up even more in this book!
Also like my last review, I have to note that reading this during COVID-19 is incredibly eerie as there are many things that are similar to the pandemic we’re currently going through. Check out my favorite passages below to see examples of some that really gave me chills.
In Day 5, even though we are quickly approaching total chaos, I love that Nick Clausen is still able to perfectly weave each varying perspective into one another. I am particularly fond of when two or more storylines merge together into one when they cross paths.
From the plot standpoint, I don’t want to give anything away so I will simply say two things.
I LOVED the scenes set on the two boats. My goodness these were spooky and unsettling! This one seemed to be the darkest and most stressful read of the bunch so far! I loved it! I could not stop reading this one. Pairing the varying perspectives with the sudden jumps to another character, I just had to keep reading to see how each situation turned out!
There were MANY times I picked this up in-between other life-related tasks (like work, sleep, dishes, etc.) and kept telling myself, “Just one more chapter.” That method is just torture here! I couldn’t wait to dive back in each time I had to put it down.
My Favorite Passages My first favorite passage is from the copyright page: No zombies were harmed in the making of this book.
“I didn’t even catch your name,” he goes on, securing his seat belt. “Mines Michael.” “Josefine. Nice to meet you.” Without thinking she offers him her hand. He looks at it, then looks up at her. “We better not. The virus, you know.” “Oh. Sorry.” She pulls back her hand, feeling stupid. “Don’t be sorry. Just get used to it. We’ll all be practicing social distancing for the foreseeable future.”
It’s completely empty, both of cars and pedestrians. The whole town seems eerily quiet. Maybe it’s because of the curfew, but he gets the sense that everything is holding its breath, waiting for something bad to happen.
The skull of the dead guy, however, is suddenly open like a soft-boiled egg, the top quarters missing completely.
My Final Thoughts You all know how much I love a great zombie story. If you enjoy zombies as well but haven’t yet checked this series out, make sure you change that asap!
Again, I know I keep saying this… but Day 5 is my new favorite of the series! I loved how intense this one was from start to finish and how it caught me off guard quite a few times.
I think this is my favorite book in the series. It's in a whole another league compared to the previous ones. :)
I absolutely love the style of the story, it jumps from different characters, creating intensity and thrills, especially when characters from different storyline come together.
I have to admit, I wasn't the biggest zombies lover, they just didn't do anything for me, but this series has me converted.
It equally parts thrilling, intense, scary, and disturbingly realistic. You can almost taste the tension. It's one of those books you have to read from first to last pages in one go because you can't put it down.
There are no buffers, the story picks up right after Day 4 left.
The family escapes in the middle of the night, trying to get to the boat and sneak out of the country. They barely make it, not until one of the zombies tries to attack the little boy.
Dennis awakes from the nightmare in the bunker. It's just him and his mom for now, but there are two guys insistent on coming in (the mom is almost scarier than the zombies, I can't wait to see what she will do to them :)).
Mille, her mom, and stepfather are on the ferry, but the stepfather has been infected. When her mom doesn't listen to reason, she takes on herself to alert the captain, but before he starts to believe her it might be too late.
Josephine goes into the nursing home to say goodbye to her father, who's been infected and decides to drive in the helicopter with him and one other patient. Two zombies in close quarters, what could go wrong? :)
The situation seems hopeless, the authorities don't' seem to have a handle on things and despite lockdown, zombies are fast spreading to neighboring countries.
There were some hints of the possible ending, and I'm so pumped to see what happens next! :)
Highly recommend it, It is the perfect series to binge read, especially around Halloween.
First off I want to say that I really enjoy reading this zombie series. I am not one to read a lot of zombie books but this series is captivating. So Day 5 embarks and we learn that the virus is spreading really fast. We also learn what is going on with previous characters like Dan and William. Their journey has been hectic to say the least. We also meet new ones like Dennis and his mom. I feel bad for these two in some ways and wonder about them in others. I feel like there is more to their story and like to see more of them in the future. Now Mille, well we learn something about her and the virus. Can this be contained or will it spread farther than the origin of the outbreak. What is the government really going to do to contain the outbreak if people do not heed the warnings. Has this virus mutated yet? So much happens in such a short time with us left to wonder how will this end. I cannot wait for day 6 to see what will happen.
Dios, estoy pasando rabia.

It's Day 5 in the Dead Meat series and everything gets out of control even more. The "virus" spreads fast and even border closings can't stop it. More and more people get infected and no one can stop it anymore. Our group tries to find a way to get to a safe place and picks up more people on their way. Will they find a way or will they die trying?
OMG! This series gets better with every new day! The days become longer but that doesn't mean it gets boring. I love how Nick Clausen easily introduces more and more people to our group and how he has the perfect back story for everyone! It's super interesting and suspenseful. I got hooked from the beginning and I'm excited to learn how everything develops further!
The highly anticipated Day 5 is out and Nick Clausen does not disappoint. The virus is rapidly spreading and the number of survivors is dwindling. As in the previous books we follow the zombie apocalypse as it spreads across countries. Some of my favorite characters stories are evolving as they try to survive and find a safe place to go. Without giving away any spoilers, as in any story, everyone can't live forever so there were some tears shed for sure. I read a lot of zombie books and this series is by far my favorite. Nick's writing style and attention to detail make it hard to put the books down and they leave you eagerly waiting for the next one.
If you liked Day 4, you’ll enjoy Day 5—more of the same, which is definitely fun. However, I do feel like the series is starting to lose some of its strength. While still being an enjoyable read
Following on for Day 4, we catch up with Mille, Dan, Holger’s bunker and the rest of the crew. There’s some new situations. Some ignorant reactions from characters who think it’s all just a virus infection, and some exciting new developments. I struggled to get into this book. The first half failed to grab my interest the same way the other books in the series have. There were some scenes I liked, but on the whole I got irritated with how people were reacting to the zombies. However, I enjoyed the second half much more than the first. The action in Holger’s bunker was riveting, and the different storylines from the first half came together in an exciting way. Not my favourite book in the series, but still lots to like, and I look forward to Day 6. I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
With time in between books, I was afraid I would forget how the book 4 ended but after reading a few pages, everything came back and it closed beautifully! Hurry up #6!
I was excited to dive back into the zombie apocalypse with Dead Meat: Day 5. Things are progressing further as the virus is spreading across Europe and our favorite characters are trying to outrun it. This book was full of places you don't want to be during a zombie outbreak....I mean who even thinks the enclosed space of a Ferry is a good idea! There are a few spots where I was yelling at the stupidity of some people. There are also a few sad moments that just hurt my heart. I can't wait to see what happens next in Day 6!
Getting kind of old on the theme. Just about the time you start to like someone they get killed and nobody is killing the zombies. I know Denmark is not a gun crazy as the US but seriously has no body there seen a zombie movie.
This is the next book in the Dead Meat series from Danish author Nick Clausen. It is a gritty, hyper-realistic story that gives a day-by-day account of the zombie apocalypse.
In this volume, the zombie contagion spreads even farther from its origin in Denmark. By the end of it, the undead have spread to north into Sweden, south into Germany, and west into the U.K. Like the previous volumes, it is loaded with deaths of various characters and unexpected attacks by the undead and betrayals by the still-living. This was by far the longest book of the series so far.
I gave Dead Meat – Day 5 five stars on Goodreads. This series continues to hold my interest, and while it does have more typos and misspellings than normal, knowing that English isn’t the author’s main language makes them tolerable.
This is Day 5 of the zombie curse. It has spread across many countries in Europe. They have been introduced into England. I am still enjoying the series, but I'm not as comfortable with the introduction of Nasira and the religious aspects of the curse. I'm not shocked by it as the original outbreak was the result of a voodoo service gone wrong. The fact that Brigit and Denise are still alive, which I find annoying and infuriating, leads me to believe that they will have some part in ending this curse. If it is to be ended at all.
I like that islands are going to part of the storyline for at least some of our characters. There are Three main groups in the series Dan and the "helicopter people," Brigit and Dennis at Holgar's house, and Ivor and friends on the island.
There was no review page at the end so ill try to remember. I do like the series. (Spoiler alert) There's a part where a character sacrifices herself trying to save others. I was heated when she died. its things like that, that keeps me reading. I like the characters and hearing their stories. Its sad that everybody can't make it but some you don't want to. I'm excited for the next part because I feel like some may be immune. Its more about the survivors than the zombies here.

This is an enjoyable and easy to read zombie series that has interesting characters, a defined ending, and helps the reader understand the role of hope and faith in overcoming disaster. There’s good development throughout the book series and the characters are multi dimensional. The story seems to lag occasionally and, binge reading it as I did, find some of the scenes to be repetitive. However overall I really enjoyed the series and I’m happy I picked up the multiple compilation.
Day five is the longest of the Dead Meat series and it feels like the most polished entry too. Things are getting real now, with a wide cast of characters in various places, a press conference from the American President, and the "virus" spreading to more and more populous places. The toothpaste is out of the tube now and there's no hope of containing it. It's the apocalypse in full force, and I'm all about it. 4 more to go.
This series is also so scarily plausible in terms of the way people react (or perhaps don't react). The tragic story continues to unfold and interestingly the spiritual/metaphysical dimension of the spreading zompoc also gently appears on the plot horizon. It will be interesting to see how that develops in Day 6.
