Work and Rest God's Way Family Guide: A Biblical Guide to Finding Joy and Purpose in All You Do

Rate this book
The Family Guide is the perfect complement to Work and Rest God’s Way!The discipline to work can be challenging for all of us, but motivating children to work is especially difficult. As a father of nine, Pastor Scott knows what is needed. Let him help you teach your children what the Bible says about work. The Family Guide is the culmination of what has been successful for him and his wife, Katie. They have learned from families they respect, books they’ve read, videos they’ve watched, conferences they’ve attended, and—most importantly—trial and error. Inside you will find:

Four bonus chapters not found in Work and Rest God’s Way, with accompanying workbook materialQuestions to help each family member find the blessings God has for them in their laborApplication assignments for each chapter to help you utilize the materialChristian family books are hard to find. If you’re looking for Christian workbooks for adults or a Christian workbook for kids, look no further! Inside you will find a family workbook parents and kids can enjoy working through together. This is also a wonderful resource for group Bible studies. Whether you’re a man or woman, young or old, parent or child, married or single, this guide will enable you to enjoy both work and rest as God intended.

It’s not a Bible “Do your best,” but this truth is communicated in Scripture. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might,” and Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” The Family Guide will help you do your best and learn what is the work of a Christian. Discover joy and purpose in all you do!

“God commands us to work. And God also commands us to rest. Scott LaPierre shows how the Bible discloses the sinfulness of laziness and ‘idleness,’ and he unpacks the contrary Biblical virtue of ‘diligence.’ But he also shows how our relationship to work can become sinful. Workaholism turns work into an addiction that can lead to burnout and idolatry. The Biblical principle of the Sabbath counters those tendencies with physical rest, the cessation of busyness necessary for spiritual devotion, and the life of faith, in which we realize that our salvation comes not by our work, but by resting in Christ. Work and Rest God’s Way is a welcome contribution as Christians rediscover the doctrine of vocation in all of its practicality and spiritual richness.”Dr. Gene Edward Veith—Provost at Patrick Henry College, director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, and author of God at Work“In Work and Rest God’s Way Scott LaPierre wonderfully reconciles the very real tension between work and rest by resisting the celebrated extremes of workaholism and play by relying on the principles and patterns laid out in God’s Word. In an age when so many are sacrificing so much to gain so very little—manifested through materialism on the one hand and hedonism on the other—this book will help you, especially if you’re a young man, navigate this life-altering strait.”Kirk Smith—Church planter, pastor, and Executive Director for the Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE)“Scott LaPierre has produced a much-needed resource to help our ch

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Everyone’s walk with God is different. Keep an open mind and read thoughts and views from all over the denominational spectrum.

This is the companion workbook to “Work and Rest God’s Way”. It is split into two sections. The first part is a family activity. The whole family in encouraged to read and complete it together.

The second part pertains to the book “Work and Rest God’s Way” and asks study questions referring to the text. Try to have both the book and workbook while working on this section.

The second part once again brought up the on going question I have about myself, am I a Mary or a Martha, or have I started to achieve a start towards a balance between the two.

This will be a reference that I will revisit through my continuing walk with God.

This guide reinforces the clarity that "Work and Rest" lays out. I would highly encourage you to read "Work and Rest God's Way" first, but if not you will still find this guide extremely helpful and possibly convicting. It is meant to encourage you in your walk with God and does a tremendous job bringing to light the the truth as taught by Scripture about work and rest (and God's will in both). It is not only helpful but, thought-provoking and biblical.

Similarly to "Work and Rest," the family guide won't give you black and white solutions to fix your work and rest imbalance but will help you grow closer to God as you grow in your understanding of his will for you throughout the busy times and the quiet times. I highly recommend this guide (as well as the book it comes alongside) and encourage you to work through it and let God work in you.

This book is a great Bible Study/Devotion for families. No one is left out.
It shines on things that can motivate people. For example a father may realize the importance of his role in the family as the spiritual head.
It has some great resources that shows us the examples of how we can protect our families and ourselves from worldly things. Even if your family is no longer in your home I believe this can still help you.
I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

I grew up, not having a father. I never even saw a picture of him. I raised by my mother, who died early of HIV, and my godmother and her mother(who I called grandma). I didn't grow up Christian. In fact, I didn't become a Christian until I met my wife. Her father, who had been a Pastor was the one who led me to Christ. I bring that all up to say, I never really knew what a, family was. And I definitely didn't know how a Christian husband should approach different aspects of Spiritually leading a family. This book helped shine light on that. Any studious Biblical Christian that sees the chapter titles alone, will be motivated to digest this entire book. The content is rewarding.

If there's one thing that we as devoted Christians would desire to do, it would be to live all facets of our lives in the manner the Lord wants us to live it. And once Christian couples have their marriages functioning according to the Lord's instructions, they've got the rest of their lives to look forward to.

With all the facets involved in living a Christian life in the Lord's intended manner for us, we face the dilemma of balancing everything we do so we can toil at our labors and still be able to live life joyfully.

In regards to us finding joy in the work we do, we need to look to what we read in ECCLESIASTES 3:13 [NKJV]:

"and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God."

This verse reinforced what we read in ECCLESIASTES 2:24 [NKJV]:

"Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God."

As a Christian woman and nonfiction Christian book reviewer, I've found that devotional books do a decent job for the purpose they've gotten written for, transforming their readers' lives regarding a specific limited topic such as pregnancies. However, devotionals can't suffice the needs of individuals when the topic is more complicated.

Pastor and author Scott LaPierre had done a spectacular job when he wrote, "Work and Rest God's Way: A Biblical Recipe for Finding Joy and Purpose in All You Do." The book got written so his readers could avoid having turmoil in their lives as they attempt to balance all aspects of it, especially the work and rest for it; they need to determine what needs to get done.

Books that center its contents on Christian family life are quite limited, which is why I found this book to be quite enlightening and a must-read for all Christian families.

While the actual book does a marvelous job for the purpose it got written for; it didn't allow for the growth of the Christian family unit. It is, for this reason, that author and Pastor Scott LaPierre created this family guidebook.

The guidebook the author has written here contains material new not previously included in the original book. Going chapter by chapter, this guidebook presents pertinent and probing questions so the Lord's blessing can become apparent for each member of the family. By insisting that parents include their children in all of their discussions regarding both books, Pastor LaPierre wants them to fulfill the directive found when we read DEUTERONOMY 6:7 [NKJV]:

"You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."

Any book that will enrich the Christian family's life so they'll live it in the manner the Lord wants them to needs to be revered and treasured, which is why I’m not hesitating in giving this guidebook working in conjunction with the actual book 5 STARS.

This is a nice family Bible study guide. It is well thought out and easy to use. The author gives a clear plan to help families go through the workbook and guide together with the most benefit without becoming overwhelmed. He understands family and the Bible. This shows through in what he includes in this book. There are places to write answers together as a family and individually leading to discussion. Various topics including things happening in the world and what God's Words says about it are included. Bible scriptures from the Old and New Testament are referenced and provided as well.

A good resource

This book is a good resource. It gives a candid look at our current society/world. It then gives you Scriptural examples of how to wisely protect our hearts and families from ill effects. It provides ideas for each person to fulfil their God-given role more effectually. I recommend this to anyone serious about living God's way.
