The New York Shade is home to all kinds of supernaturals. It is a safe haven for all of us and it makes no exceptions.

Until I did something to piss it off and now it doesn't like me. Bad smells at every turn, empty bags of food on my face, and you can forget all about shortcuts. I don't even know what I did wrong, but that's about to become the least of my problems.

When a hellbeast mercenary like me asks for my help, I can't refuse. All I have to do is help him kill off a few maneaters--but I get much more than I bargained for.

The next thing I know, the Uprising is after me again, and I'm racing to find a forgotten planet that's not on any maps.

That's not even the end of it. Damian Reed is back, and he demands I tell him what I have that the Uprising wants. After four months of not hearing from him, I want nothing to do with him. But all alone, I have no chance against his crazy ex girlfriend.

Accepting his help means going right back to where we started, but if I don't, I won't be able to help my new friend. This time, though, things between us just might end up worse than before.

Loving this series. These are not really stand-alone so you'll need to read from book one. I didn't read the blurb because I didn't want to spoil it for myself.

So fun and quirky. New folks are in the mix and the Shade is doing it's own thing. This one starts off in a place you don't expect from the ending of the first one. It goes from Urban Fantasy to - 'here's a mix in of Sci-Fi'. Unexpected but more fun and interesting because of it. The love interest is really nowhere to be seen at first and I found myself kind of pining for him. But don't worry, he's back in no time.

Great follow up to book one and definitely kept me wanting more. Thank goodness book three was out already!

Good

Things get a little dicey in this installment, new friends emerge, old enemies are still in play and a powerful werewolf enters the scene. Nice.

Love the new characters

To be clear I went with 4 stars simply because I liked the plot line in this book, and I still really like Sin. That being said Damien still super annoys me, I mean really really annoys me.
To understand my annoyance you have to have read book 1, and how when Sin was kidnapped and her kidnappers threatened to kill her brother, who they also had possession of, she agreed to kill Damien. Honestly, I don’t even feel like it was agreeing, I mean when someone puts a gun to your head, you say yes and figure out how to get out of it later. Long story short, Sin doesn’t go through with it, Damien finds out, is a super whiny baby about it, and throws her out on the street after letting one of his team knock her unconscious. He keeps demanding an apology for something she didn’t so, and here we are four months later, and yep still whining about his whole apology business. And to be clear, as we find out in this book he isn’t exactly fully forthcoming to Sin, which is honestly way more of a betrayal of trust, especially considering Sin keeps coming through for him when she is really under no obligation to do so and while he is being super whiny too. He’s just so self-involved, me me me, he is the center of the universe. He’s jealous with no right to be, he declares Sin as his to others even though he is still punishing Sin. It’s like come on, ugh. It’s super clear he is going to be the Hero in this series, and that they are going to end up together (I’m assuming) which is just disappointing unless he gets a personality transplant.
That being said the rest of the book works for me. I like the new characters. Carter the werewolf who is sarcastic and seems to have just as many secrets and Sin. But unlike Damien he shows up for Sin when he doesn’t have to and expects nothing in return. I really like that he is dependable and funny, and why oh why can’t he be the Hero. I loved Alora, she’s funny and kind of innocent, and on a mission to get back home (which is basically the whole plot). I really liked seeing Sin trying to figure out how to handle her, and then how to get her back where she belongs. Honestly, Sin is just a good person who quickly decides to help someone she doesn’t even know and then is it in no matter what. There are some good fight scenes, and we see more of the Uprising which is good reading, and honestly I feel like the Uprising is slowly getting backed into a corner and when they strikeout next it could be really dramatic. Overall, loved the story. Not Damien.

Fun UF series

A fun UF series. Good characters and world building. One thing I noticed the author does very well is introduce a lot of characters, but makes it easy to distinguish between them. A lot of books/series introduce a bunch of characters/names and halfway through you find yourself thinking - wait, who is this guy again? OR, Is she the one with the bar or the dentist? (As an example). I didn't notice it at the time, but now I'm amazed she managed to write that many people in and make each one distinguishable without a lot of annoying descriptions (you know what I mean - the ones that read like they're a missing persons poster or even worse the ones that look like bad dating profiles written by flowery poets)...

At any rate.. It's really hard to juggle this many characters and do it so well.

Big fan of dual POV (point of view) when there's a romance going on. That's also handled fantastically here.

It's not a clean romance, if you're looking for that, look elsewhere. And the scenes are steamy not cringe.

rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents! I absolutely love how DNs books hook you in craving more. I finished this book in one sitting!!
we left off on book 1 with Sin getting her brother back and we start this book with her being lonely as her brother is at the academy. she spends her time with her friends and Kit but still has thoughts of that sexy vampire. while out with friends, she gets a call from Lucas requesting help with maneaters but way worse then what they dealt with. When Sin arrives, she see a very large werewolf...a new member of Lucas' team. Sin goes in with the werewolf and sees the 3 monsters hammering through a wall and eating the remains of their kills. A worthy effort to kill the beasts but what Sin doesnt comprehend what she is seeing....a female being who is all pink who looks terrified and no one else can see her. maybe Sin is having a breakdown. At home, the pink female appears out of nowhere...OMG! The female said she is from a different planet no one has heard of and has been stuck on that capsule for 87 years! Sin agrees to help her out but at what cost. Sin needs a way to help her but the only way she can is visiting a vampire who requires blood as payment but she has no choice. Things are getting downright weird and the next thing she knows Damian is there...where did he come from? she cant stop the way she feels but she also remembers what he did. More drama ensues, deception and lies along with a whole new world of discovery plus big bad werewolves. Can Sin make it out alive?

Sin is gets a call from Lucus, he needs help with a job. Since she owes him for helping her with the amulet, she goes. Sin makes a discovery while at the house. At first she thinks she is losing her mind. When the person shows up suddenly in her home, she is happy to realize she is not. She promises the person she will help them.
Sin will makes some unwise decisions in helping this person. She doesn't want to go Damien for anything. Sin is still trying to come to terms with how things happened with him.

Damien has a surprise visit from his ex, he is realizes she doesn't get to him anymore. Damien is approached about Sin, he realizes he has to go see what is happening. Things don't go as he was hoping. Sin and Damien have some unresolved issues that get in the way. Damien will do what he can to protect her. Things will only get worse for the both of them. Sin will learn some things about herself, Damien know all along.

This book was non stop action, kicks up when Sin helps Lucas. You have the Sin and Damien that have the push/pull relationship. There are some new characters that are included in this book, that you will enjoy. I am hoping pulling for Sin and Damien. I really can't wait to see what happens next Sin, her powers, what else learns and so much more. This book just drew me and I just could not put it down. This book is a rollercoaster ride with the highs and lows of these characters. I highly recommend reading this book/ series

Overall: 3/5

Plot and themes: 3/5

Characters: 4/5

Writing style: 3/5

Attention-grabbing: 4/5

Stolen Magic is the second book in the New York Shade series following Sin and Damian as they try to root out the real basis of this Uprising so set on ruining everything. Sin hasn't heard from Damian in months though, and she's pretty sure that he kind of holds her attempted murder against her and she's learning to be okay with that. But when he drops back in she has to figure out where this is really going.

I accidentally got behind on reviews and finished this series before writing this review so I'm biased. This one is kind of boring because you get the back and forth of Sin and Damian just being annoyed at each other for different things that's really just the baseline epitome of the miscommunication trope. Her brother is completely out of the picture and it's just a weird balance of trying to integrate regular life into their quirky magic circumstances.

Had mixed feelings about the introduction of another possible love interest, Damian and Sin have a kind of instalove story so competition is fun but also I don't think it's really challenging their relationship to authentically develop. I do like the werewolves though and I'm all in all not mad. It was just very much a filler novel, not detrimental to the series but not as exciting as the first.

Navigating the intimidating trials and arduous tribulations, noting the deadly twists and dramatic turns, igniting a fierce surge of determination, with such intensity and precision, kicking this baby into a tailspin with an astonishing realization. I am loving this series!!

This girl just doesn't get a break! It's been four months since the huge fight in the square and Sin hasn't heard a word from Damien. Granted, he was trying to give her time to calm down so they could talk. But, four months is a bit much. True, vampires have screwed since of time. How was he to know it was too long. She joins Lucas and his team to take out some maneaters and the adventure begins. She meets a fae, Alora, stuck in a cylinder for 87 years, fights the prince of the Spring Court, meets an werewolf, Carter, the twin of the Brooklyn Alpha, runs into Damien's crazy ex, there is usually someone out to kill her and her magic is in overdrive. This is a fantastic fast-pace, exciting book. I just wish Damien and Sin would talk and get everything out in the open. I highly suggest reading this enthralling book.

Good

When I first started reading the first book in this series and the author was talking about the shade I was a little confused as to what it was. Apparently the shade is not what you find under a tree but a living entity. Now the shade is made at Sin and making her life hard wile she is in the shade. Sin and her vampire lover did not part on good terms, but on the good side he didn’t turn her in to the Sacri Guild. When Sin helps her friend kill some maneaters that are in someone’s house, she discovers that the maneaters weren’t just after the occupants of the house, but what they had hidden behind their bedroom wall. Now Sin is trying to help her new friend get home to her own world. In doing this, she ends up showing more of her talent than she wanted. Now it is even harder to keep her magic level a secret.

Good

Sinea is asked to help out a couple of mercenary friends when a job goes wrong.
Suddenly she is responsible for an unusual Fae being, and is trying desperately to get her home. The uprising is trying to get in her way, and an alpha wolf has joined in the mischief.
Between the wolf and the vampire who haunts her dreams, Sin has a lot going on.

This is book two in the series, and although it is a complete story, the overarching background story is, as yet, unfinished.
Not to worry, it doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the book, the fabulous storytelling, and the engrossing plotline.
It’s a story well told, and makes for an enjoyable time reading.

Recommended for those who love fantasy, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance.

She helped a fellow hellbeast mercenary with a job, and a new friend has asked that she help her find a way to home. Sin hasn't seen nor heard from Damian for four months, suddenly the Uprising, and Damian's crazy ex are after her again.
Wow, I think this is an exciting, action packed book with an intelligent, well written female lead character who knows what she wants and doesn't let anyone, or anything stop her from doing what she thinks is right. The plot has plenty of of surprising twists, and the character interactions draw you into their world. I absolutely love this series!

The characters develop more in this story and we meet some new ones! I really like Alora and want Carter to be the main man for Sin. I was a bit disappointed that this seemed almost like a novella in that it's part of the world and had the same characters but doesn't progress anything in the way of the defeating the main big bag guys - the Uprising. I will be interested to know if anything happens with Alora again in the future and if we see her again. I'm not sure i like Damian at all which is hard to take since he's the main characters love interest. I get a distinct twilight vibe - vampire guy she just can't resist for some unknown reason and the perfect for her werewolf the she has no interest in. I will read the next one because I'm enjoying the fast pace and the story is good.

What an amazing second book. I finished this in one day. I just could not put it down. Sin is such a great character that has compassion, grit and keeps her word. The introduction of Carter in this story adds a great element to the story, he is a fun guy with power equal to Sin. I have to admit that I have become very invested in this series and I Highly recommend it. I do not do spoilers so read this if you love a great urban fantasy.
I received an ARC from the author and I am leaving this Totally HONEST review because I choose to and I Loved every page! Happy Reading!!!

A great action and adventure story. Several interesting new characters joined the story but lots of former ones continued along. But I find the ending to be rather heartbreaking. It seems that Sinea is destined to bestarcrossed.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Page-turner. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book as a gift from the author. This is my honest review.

The first book was great, the second is even better!!! It’s rather graphic during the fight scenes which was fine by me (just a warning). I love the Sin is such a badass on her own but is willing to help others (even though she views herself somewhat as a loner). Everyone seems drawn to her and I feel the same! I’m interested to see how the story evolves between Damian and Carter and her and her team(s). Great read and I’m so ready for more!

I loved Sin Montero, hellbeast mercenary and professional liar, in Magic Thief, the first book in D.N. Hoxa’s The New York Shade series. Now she’s back and better than ever, in Stolen Magic (Book 2). Vampire Damian Reed is back too, and his crazy-ex-girlfriend is the least of Sin’s worries. This is one wild ride of a superbly written book. So exciting it pulls you in. So well plotted that it’s addictive. Pure fun, too, and easy to highly recommend.

I am absolutely loving this series. I couldn’t wait to read this book especially how Damian & Sin left things. I love when Damian & Sin are together but something tells me Carter might give him a run for his money. Great story and of course of l love the characters. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Good adventure

Sin has a new project. Keeping Alora safe and getting her back home. But guess who wants Amira? The Uprising. And then there are unresolved issues with Damien. Oh and oh introducing Carter! Lol

Lots of action. Lots of magic. What’s with the dagger? Lots of evilness to fight. And not everything is good. Good book.

Stolen Magic (The New York Shade, #2) my fifth read from author D.N. Hoxa. As good as The Marked Trilogy was this looks to be even better, non-stop action, a kick-ass heroine. I was given a Kindle copy of this book and I'm voluntarily reading & reviewing it because every great book needs reviews. I'll be reading more from this author! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

World's apart

A mix of heroic adventure, good and bad supernatural entities and magic. Fans of Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews well Sin's latest escapade. Throw in a new elven friend needing help, an alpha werewolf wanting a whole lot of things and the jilted master vampire's desires all combine to make fighting the Uprising the easier choice.

Enjoyable

I often won't get a series of more than 2-3 books because I find them becoming so repetitive, however, I am finding the familiar characters in very different stories and loving it! Love your strong, funny leading lady, and your mysterious, sexy leading vampire. Looking forward to next book.

The story keeps me wanting more.
Not a fan of love triangles and misunderstandings but Damien didn't collect too many points here while Carter looks like a worthy contender.
Sin is still a good female lead, strong willed but with a heart and magic aplenty.
Loved Alora.

Kinda lost its way

It started off strong but the storyline got a bit twisted and then lost its way. The plot twist was announced in the first book so it wasn’t surprising. Still an awesome light read, but don’t expect to much
