A thousand points to Aya Kanno for successfully working in a horror riff on A Midsummer Night's Dream. I also very much appreciate her acknowledgement that Anne Neville has never been able to make her own choices for her life, something Kanno uses as motivation for her choosing sides in this volume.
We all know that this story can't end well. (Although I have an idea or two on that front.) But going along on this downhill ride is increasingly exciting as it goes on.

THIS VOLUME WAS EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE AND MORE!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!! I was seriously screaming by the end, and I cannot wait to see how things go in the next volume. Each volume continues to be stunning, and I can't help but fall in love with the characters and the brutal politics all over again!

I don't know what is more compelling about this series - the captivating, sexually-charged intense political storyline or the gorgeous art that makes it so very real. If you weren't a Richard III sympathizer before reading BNS, you will be, fantasy aside. This is the height of storytelling perfection.

Moving right along with this series, although I might save the final volumes (there are 17) for after the holidays.
Story recap. Buckingham and Richard have collaborated to put Richard on the throne.
Prior to Edward V’s coronation (which we know won’t take place), the prince plans a celebratory hunt. Edward, showing his true and very unpleasant colors, insists that Richard offer up his son (also Edward) as the prize! On top of that, the hunt is actually a ruse to cover up a plot to assassinate Richard, one that has been hatched by Elizabeth Woodville and her collaborators.
And may I say here that the two Brat Princes are just that – super brats? They are so obnoxious that I would never shed a tear for the demise of either. Then again, this is just a story, so it’s not like I’m wishing ill on any real person!
Also in this volume, Richard, Buckingham and Catesby are looking into rumors Edward V might be illegitimate, and Anne Neville, tired of never being able to make her own life choices, comes out of her shell and publicly declares for Richard. The two may have an unconventional marriage, what with Richard’s body issues and the truth of their son Edward’s parentage, but there is a spark of affection between the two.
The assassination plot is discovered and foiled, and Richard takes the final steps toward kingship. He and Buckingham spread rumors that the late King Edward IV’s marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was never valid. The princes are seclared illegitimate, taken into custody and housed in the Tower.
But as with all the volumes in this series, there is so much more, a beautiful blend of history, fantasy, Shakespeare, and the author’s vivid imagination. As always, the artwork is a delight to look at, and the plot twists are enough to keep one up at night, wondering what’s going to happen next!

I was always curious to see how Aya Kanno would interpret the "princes in the tower" aspect of Richard III's story. There was such an interesting set of events leading up to Richard usurping the throne and certainly Kanno did not disappoint here. Yes, this is a fun, overdramatized, urban-fantasy version of Richard's story. But it is a pleasure to see Kanno weaving facts with fiction into something wholly original.Story: Young Prince Edward V is about to be crowned but his mother Elizabeth Woodville is not done scheming. Even though she has secured the throne for her son she still wants revenge on Richard. Using both overly spoiled and rotten sons as scapegoats, she plans for an 'accident' to happen to Richard during a hunt. But Richard is not so easy to kill and has very clever associates in the form of Catesby and Buckingham.
This story takes place during the time when Richard was clearly maneuvering for the throne in real life. Richard had disbanded and then either executed or run off the young Edward's protectors and guardians. Then he held off the coronation, which would have ended his own guardianship of the young Prince (and therefore his influence on politics). When Elizabeth's marriage was eventually annulled due to King Edward having a previous marriage (and with Edward IV's brother George's heirs being disallowed because of the stain George placed on the family name), that left Richard to inherit. This volume is the events leading up to the Princes going to the tower together.
In this story, it was an interesting choice to make both princes spoiled brats - thereby making their imprisonment and murder less horrifying. As well, it gives a reason for Kanno to have Richard's wife have a change of heart about her husband. As always, there is a lot of supernatural elements at work here. Richard is not necessarily sound of mind and being held together by his allies. But the dreams and recriminations always follow him now that he has so much in his past.
In all, a fun retelling of the life of Richard III. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

4,5 stars. Volume 12 is taking place just before Edward V's coronation. To-be-king holds a celebratory hunt before the coronation but it's just a foil to murder Richard. Even though the Edward IV's boys ("the princes in the Tower") are such horrible brats in this series, they are mostly puppeted by their mother, widow queen. At the same time Richard, Buckingham and Catesby are looking into rumours Edward V might be illegimate.
It's continuing with the mix of political schemes, tragedy left and right and oozing sexuality. Really, Richard and Buckingham's relationship is more complicated by every passing chapter. There's some affection but mostly some sort of "hey, there's nobody else we could be with" type of thing. But then Buckingham goes to meet Jane (whose accused of witchcraft) and asks REALLY disturbing stuff. WTF?? Anyway, the whole play as been doomed from the beginning and I hate that Richard thinks it's a way to get some solace.
Speaking of relationships... Anne is back! Even though I'm constantly sad she's so sad and betrayed in this and her and Edward of Lancaster were portrayed better couple than she and Richard, it's nice see her back. After that happens in the end of the hunt I have hopes she will have a short period of power before she dies.
Even though everybody is a scheming shit, Elizabeth Woodville's plotting is framed specifically mad and sure it felt good to see her ploy fall short.
Yeah, even though this is far from truth and amped up even compared to Shakespeare, it's very intriguing and engaging.
(Okay, funny, just as I was clicking "post", Spotify shuffled Joni Mitchell's The Last Time I Saw Richard from my miscellaneous playlist.)

My favorite volume yet. All the pieces are coming together. The way Richard is able to turn every tide to his side is simply captivating. I can't believe he's going to get away with it. It definitely helps that the princes are insufferable and I don't want to see them win. There's something so grotesque and off-putting about how Elizabeth and her sons are drawn in this volume. On top of that, I'm impressed by how Aya Kanno is able to turn the hunt into A Midsummer Night's Dream-inspired sequence. Not only is it a fun way of paying homage to Shakespeare, it also fits with the vibe of the story, especially with those surreal dream sequences. While I still don't like Buckingham, he's what Richard needs at the moment.

I really hate Richards nephew Edward. The younger brother just wanted his mothers love, so I see him more as a puppet than a person, who acts on his own, I even feel kinda sorry.
I flew through this volume, because the climax is very much ahead and I habe to salute to the author. She dug up a little detail from long, long ago and used it brilliantly in Richards best way in the very best moment.
My favourite character is still Buckingham, that won´t change.
But the prize in this volume goes to Anne! She she a character fast as hell in grasping a situation and it was very brave of her, to fight against the manipulation and being tricked into killing Richard.
I was reading the volumes back to back until now. I have read all the volumes I have at home by now. The next volume won´t be out before august, so I can drown in the worst cliffhanger feels EVER until then.
I could read Shakespeares play until then ...

Ooof I loved this volume, because of the developing feelings between both Richard and Buckingham. And it feels natural too that they've come to care for each other despite their unholy bond and scheming and plotting. They've been so obsessed and focused on their goal which involves the other that it aligns with the journey they're on. And I think that's why I like them together more than the other pairings. I think Henry VI was always the idealistic first flush of love, literally framed with a halo of light. But Henry VI was an ineffective and weak ruler, and Richard has his darkness and ambitions and desires that do not align with Henry. They cannot walk side by side together. This is what Catesby understands, which is why he stood by and let Buckingham claim Richard. Chapters 53-54 which were the chapters involving the faux hunt--- fabulous. The art was absolutely stunning, Aya Kanno outdid herself. The imagery was horrific and magical both at the same time. And the end of the volume, where we take the final steps to Richard's crowning... with Buckingham holding him and licking the blood off his hands... *chef's kiss*

Otro tomo de esta maravilla de obra, y en el que se puede presenciar el fin de una era, donde los bandos a luchar esta vez portarán la misma rosa.
Y es que este tomo no es muy bélico, sino que se centra más en la estrategia palaciega y en la supervivencia en una corte monárquica, donde cualquier paso en falso conllevaría a la caída. Aunque aún está presente el juego por la corona inglesa, con todo lo que eso porta.
Richard, que ya estaba sufriendo una evolución, en este tomo dejará poco a poco sus miedos infantiles atrás. Todo para alcanzar aquello que, siempre y en secreto, anheló tener.
Aunque él no será el único puesto a prueba, ya que hay otro personaje cercano al protagonista que aún no ha decidido un bando en el que jugar, siendo ella portadora de todo el destino de Inglaterra sin siquiera saberlo.

Es uno de los tomos que más me han gustado últimamente. Poco a poco nos acercamos a la historia original, y menos mal, porque los sobrinos de Richard son un puñetero incordio. Según la historia, desaparecen y nunca se supo quién lo había hecho. Esperemos que sea así.
Destaco la actuación de Anne, que, para mí, era la mujer que sin duda habría hecho feliz a Richard si él le hubiera dado la oportunidad. Fiel pese a la indiferencia de este. Buckingham, por otro lado, es el carisma personificado, y está claro que su pacto está derivando poco a poco en amor.
Pero temo que Buckingham traicione a Richard por sus preguntas sobre la posibilidad de que este tenga un hijo suyo. Aunque ha empezado a amarle, temo que su amor no sea suficiente para superar sus ambiciones.
Un tomo espectacular. Deseando que llegue el siguiente.

I absolutely adore this series so much! The drama is everything and I want to hug Richard so many times whenever he's in trouble; he just needs a hug! And also someone to really love him, not gonna lie. Catesby was amazing and I can't wait to read more of this series-bring on more drama and messiness! I'm here for it!

Aquest volum és una autèntica passada!!! L'anterior ho deixava ben amunt amb la decapitació d'en Hastings, però el ritme no ha decaigut gens i ha estat una lectura trepidant. M'encanta com en aquest retelling l'Anne Neville és un personatge femení ple de força que no es deixa doblegar després de tanta manipulació. I després tota la representació del deliri i el retrobament... pèls de punta!!!! Ö
