The Last Phoenix #2

Wings of Death

Rate this book
Good news? I’m no longer a thief. Bad news? I’m no longer a thief.

Some may consider that only good news since I’ll no longer run the risk of getting my ass thrown in a grim reaper prison for the rest of my extremely long life—longevity comes with the phoenix nametag. Except I happen to enjoy the thrill of the hunt that comes with relieving goods from my unsuspecting targets.

Too bad a sadistic vampire messed it all up for me.

But things never stay boring for long. When I find a necromancer’s undead creation stumbling across a Miami beach—a highly illegal practice these days, I’d like to add—I get pulled into an investigation by the Death Enforcement Agency. Sounds like fun, right?

Wrong.

There’s one huge problem. I’ve been recruited by a man I can’t seem to resist, a sexier-than-sin grim reaper who sets me aflame in all the best and worst places. The attraction is unnaturally strong, but I can’t focus on solving that problem until we find the necromancer responsible for the newly undead.

Because if we don’t nip this dead-man-walking situation soon, we may have a rising zombie apocalypse on our hands.

If you loved Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters, Ilona Andrews’s Kate Daniels, or Seanan McGuire’s InCryptid series, then you will devour The Last Phoenix series.

WINGS OF DEATH is the 2nd book of 7 in The Last Phoenix series, a kickass urban fantasy containing fast-paced action, snarky humor, sexy grim reapers, a variety of shifters, a hearty dose of swearing, and a healthy splash of romance. Oh, and this one has zombies, too.

Okay, she's growing on me. The FMC is not the instant likeable heroine. She is still badass in the kill and take no prisoners explode way, even if she would be an assistant badass compared to others I've read and loved.

The slow burn is still slow but cute. There are so many new things coming to light, I know there is more to this all, more to her brother's murder, more to what the Angels know, more to her lineage...
Oh, and zombies!! I did like her explaining how they work in this world!

The ending was a cliffhanger in a way and suited this book world and character. I still have a few niggles with the writing style. I don't get the 24-hour chapter naming, "Sunday 4pm." It doesn't help me with the timeline or impact the story in a good way at all. Wish that would just stop. And the repetitive reminders of how her shifting works. We get it. It's book 2 now, and you can stop. Aside from these bugs and others I ignored. It's an interesting world and book.

„Wings of Death“ is the second installment in Stephanie Mirro’s supernatural urban fantasy series “The Last Phoenix”, which follows Veronica Neill fate as very special kind of phoenix, an avian shifter (Falcon) working in which she would describe as ‘acquisition and recovery of magical artifacts’, only her enemies would dare to call her a thief, with the pertinent consequences 😉

After her run up with that a vampire in the previous book (Wings of Fire) Veronica life as thief (magical or otherwise), with all its pros and cons, seem to be over. On the one side is a plus, her chances to end up in prison under the observant eye of the Enforcement Agency for like…forever, are dim. On the minus side her chances to die of boredom increase exponentially, because let us be real, Veronica really lives for it all, the search, the thrill, the danger. So finding a necromancer’s undead creation on the beach, and be recruited by the Death Enforcement Agency to solve the case should be good news, except her recruiter makes is almost impossible to focus on the case, drop-dead gorgeous 😉 takes on a new meaning against the odds of fighting a necromancer while trying to keep from burning up for the grim reaper, best before the zombie apocalypse takes over the city.

Stephanie Mirro’s original blend of history, mythical lore, fast-paced action and good developed characters thrown in the middle of unexpected situations flows into the story and makes this new series already a must for fans of good-written intelligently constructed UF with a taste for snarky comments, witty humor, the whole menagerie of paranormal and a very sexy DEA (Death Enforcement Agency) agent thrown on top.

The risen are coming

Things have mellowed out for Veronica and she is on the straight and narrow, sort of. After watching Xavier's sentencing she stumbles into a handsome fae. Thane asks for her help with a case as well. And Jessa lets slip the name of her brothers killer which sets things in motion.

People are keeping secrets in this one. And someone definitely wanrmted V and her brother out of the way years ago. Also interested to find out whats up between her and Thane.

This is the second book in the series, and this one was even better than the first. In this latest, we get a little glimpse of Veronica’s brother’s murder, more about her abilities, and we learn there’s more secrets than even she knows. In addition, the chemistry between Veronica and Thane are off the charts! This was an excellent book filled with great writing, wonderful characters, engaging plot, and fast action. The more I read this author, the more I love her books. Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Checking off the zombies

Ambitious for book 2. Veronica's headstrong nature is getting a little frustrating as is her 'me so horny' mind wandering but the rest of the cast makes it worth putting up with as they're just as stubborn as she is. Still not entirely predictable. On to book 3.

This is book two of The Last Phoenix series and sees Veronica ‘V’ Neill coming to terms with no longer being a thief. She soon finds this new and totally legal life boring, but it is somewhat better than what had recently happened to her with Xavier Garcia, the master Vampire of Miami. She has an afternoon off and goes to witness his sentencing hearing, but he seems unconcerned about his sentence of death by beheading. It won’t be carried out for a few days, but V feels safe that he is in prison and can no longer come after her. Jessa, a healing angel, had been put on her protection detail, by the angel in charge of the DEA and Reapers, Adam Larue, the Archangel of Miami. Now hopefully, V can get back to a somewhat normal life, even if it is just finding lost items or people, none of which have any illegal connections. Out and about in the magical market, El Sombra Mercado, she overhears a couple of women talking about three unusual dead bodies and another couple of missing people, but then she has to leave to go to an appointment with a future client, who wants her to get her deceased husband’s ring back from the wolf pack alpha, for her son.

She goes out for a run ending up along the beach, where she sees a man who is clearly a Risen, one who has been raised from the dead and so she notifies the authorities and they come to contain it before anyone can get hurt. The odd thing about this one is that it spoke to her, something they have never been able to do ad which the officer pays no attention to! It seems a necromancer is creating illegal Risen and the numbers keep on increasing. Only once more of these Risen start appearing, does V get pulled in by the DEA (Death Enforcement Agency), to help Thane, her sexy Reaper who she is attracted to, but doesn’t see herself in any sort of relationship with him as he is dead already, so it won’t really go anywhere! It seems more than one necromancer must be making these Risen, as the numbers are far too large for just one to create. Somehow, V is being targeted by groups of these creations, as well as the DEA headquarters being attacked by hordes of them. V came to an agreement with Thane, for information on her brother Maddox’s death, which she only recently found out was a murder, not suicide as she had blamed herself about for years, in return for her help with this latest case.

V meets an attractive fae, and is asked out on a date, but it is cut short after mention is made of the Risen attack, and he says he is working with Adam, but someone is telling lies or trying to hide matters from her and she doesn’t like it! She works on her case for the widow on her ring case, but decides to try using her skills to take the item back, having promised the young mother she would get the ring back no matter what, and finding the wolf alpha wasn’t willing to give it back, unless the mother returned to the pack and remarried. This places V in a dangerous position, being caught in the act and now having an alpha on her back and a seemingly impossible situation to solve. She thought she had a new man in the running, but he isn’t exactly getting off to a great start and matters with Thane are heating up, and it looks like he is just as interested in her! Fighting off all these hordes of Risen is getting harder and all the angels and reapers are called back to the headquarters, but not all of them make it back. One of the reapers is missing and Adam finds out he is being held by a large number of necromancers and their army of zombies. It is obviously going to be a trap for anyone that tries to rescue him, but V uses her sidekick Kit to search for a hidden location for this army of zombies and then has to try and get a bit of action, as usual. Lots of action in this one, with some very important information about her past and the full extent of her powers are revealed. I can’t wait to see what happens next, each book is easy to read and the pace moves right along, keeping your interest the whole way through. I love V’s character and Kit and her computer skills, as well as her refusal to use magic, but still having a few devices to deter the bad guys. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

WINGS OF DEATH continues Veronica and Thane's story, just a week after the events of book 1 and this time we have zombies attacking the city of Miami and a necromancer behind it all. Just like the first book, there's non-stop action and plenty of fighting, knife throwing, and ass kicking. While I enjoyed the action there were several decisions that Veronica made, safety and strategy wise, that were just really dumb and seemed a bit out of character for Veronica. I guess you could say Veronica was running on emotions more than intelligence in this one but it was frustrating to read. A lot of Veronica's problems in this book were ones she created with her bad decisions.

As for Veronica and Thane...the sexual tension! These two were circling each other and refusing to admit their growing feelings and it was oh so delicious. But what was the deal with Colin?! This sort of love triangle was completely unnecessary and I hated reading about Veronica going on dates with Colin. It's obvious that Thane is the endgame for Veronica and she already has enough angst over her feelings for Thane since she needs to procreate to continue the phoenix line but Thane is sterile as a reaper. So we really didn't need to throw in another guy as a distraction, especially since Colin didn't really contribute anything to the actual plot, even including after his secret was revealed. It was one of the major reasons I didn't like this one as much as the first book and I hope we're done with the Colin story line.

Content Warning: references to the death of Veronica's brother and parents; brief mention of Thane dying from an overdose before becoming a reaper; gore; Veronica feels pressured to eventually have a baby so she can continue the phoenix line

The next in the series and it is not a standalone. Without reading number 1 you will be lost.

The story starts just a week or so after book 1 and Veronica is eagerly waiting for a certain villain to be executed. In this book there are 3 storylines: the search for more information about the murder of Veronica's brother (overlaying ARC), the sudden appearance of 'Risen' (bodies brought back to life by (a) necromancer(s)) and also a case Veronica has taken regarding a ring and a wolf pack.

The first 2 are clear, because they contribute to the overall storyline of Veronica - past, present and future. But the third was a bit thrown in and had no real value in my eyes. It became a bit confusing with all the different characters and names. I still also have many questions about Veronica's parents but I am sure these will be answered at a later date. Still not sure about the angels. They are so powerful, but seem like office clerks. You need them, you have to call them... And when they lock up Veronica - knowing she is a bird shifter - it is too easy for her to escape :-) Plus - and that was a big thing for me - they cannot even find the bad people while Veronica (and Kit) find them in a jiffy. So, who you gonna call? NOT the angels.

Overall it was an enjoyable romp. I look forward to the next for more explanation. Especially about Thane and the real chemistry between him and Veronica.

Veronica is still recovering from the physical injuries sustained during her last adventure where a Vampire Lord was exposed and arrested before being trialed by the DEA court. The sentencing was upcoming.

Working as a server in a coffee bar, she has reformed from being a thief, according to the angels, to a private investigator for the Society of Supernaturals. A certain Necromancer named Thane has a peculiar effect on her and she wonders why. Her main priority is to identify and deal with everyone implicated in the assassination of her little brother Maddox.

In my opinion, this is one of the best written stories that I have had the privilege of reading to date.
The author mixes various ingredients such as Mystery, Love, Hate, Distrust, Friendship, Wealth, Poverty, The Dark Arts, Righteousness and a goal to achieve above all.

In addition, the main character is whitty, eager to help and secretive after being instructed to be secretive about her true self, by the Archangel in charge.

Action, mystery, thrilling adventure and the unknown are areas that the author, using her talent, succeeds in virtually taking her readers along for the ride. The book is a page turner and I look forward to reading the next book in the series while rating this one 5 Stars +++++++++

Loving this series

Never a dull moment... i know I'm only 2 books down with 5 to go but I'm definitely loving this series 💖

All V wants is to watch her vampire enemy lose his head and get back to her life of coffee art but when walking dead start turning up around the city Thane ropes her in to help figure out who's behind it all. As the number of walking dead increases V comes face to face with the multitudes taking over the city but when Xavier escapes it seems all a bit too coincidental. When her path crosses with the vamp and he slips her some info about her brothers killer she comes to a crossroads persue her brothers killer or continue with the necromancy issue around the city. She's always been skilled so she manages to do both but defeating the walking dead will come at a cost one being outing herself and just as things with Thane start looking up She's forced into hiding when a bounty is placed on the last phoenix's head.
Can't wait to see what happens next.

Definitely Recommend Reading 📚

This story picks up soon after where the first one ended. Veronica is trying to figure out what to do with being outed as the Falcon and a thief. She's had to change her ways and is trying to get used to her new normal. However, she doesn't have to worry about what to do for long because there's a certain reaper who asks for her help...
I liked learning more about Veronica's life, plus some insight into Kit's!!
The story builds and keeps building throughout, staying interesting and pretty action packed.

The narrator does a great job!! I enjoyed her narration, she does a great job getting into character and voicing the male voices. I'd definitely listen to more books narrated by her!!

Note: This is a series. I'd recommend reading the first book before this one otherwise, you'd be a bit confused. Granted, you could probably figure everything out, but I think it'd be more enjoyable if you read the first one first.

Getting even better!!! 🤩

Full of action, magic and more mysteries, this is an unputdownable installment that will keeping you glued to your sit, with unexpected and shocking twists and turns, new characters and a chemistry off the charts between V and Thane 😍🔥
While getting some anwsers regarding her brother's death, more and more questions began to pop regarding her parents and her heritage... What is the archangel hiding from her?... Where will lead this chemistry between Thane and her?... What about the Fae?... What is she going to do in this new place? 🤔🤨
We need so many anwsers, can't wait for the next book!!! 😍 ❤️

Holy moly!

Mylanta! This girl gets herself into situations that make you must shake your head.
Victoria finds out the name of her brother’s killer and figures out how to get into the prison to talk to him. He gives her some rather cryptic statements that have her mind spinning.
Now there are Risen, zombies! V finds out who is responsible when she is accosted by Xavier on her way home.
Poor Jessa, she certainly has her work cut out for her!
What is going to,happen with Thane? What’s going to happen (you know SOMETHING is going to happen) in Tucson? Trouble just won’t leave our girl V alone!

Everyone in the supernatural community now knows that Veronica (V) is master thief Falcon, so she can't exactly sneak in and out of places to steal things anymore. Now she's settling in as something of an unofficial private investigator and trying to make an honest living with a little inevitable breaking and entering.

Zombies start showing up shambling through parks and alleys of Miami, and the DEA (Death Enforcement Agency, the supernatural version of the FBI, and totally not the Drug Enforcement Agency -- don't be as confused as I was) calls her in to help them find the necromancer responsible.

A fast-paced and entertaining read.

Veronica now works openly within the Community helping people find things. So what if it’s a little bit boring - there’s much less chance of being thrown in jail now. Then zombies start showing up and she somehow ends up working with her personal kryptonite again, Thane. Everything swirls together, including her brother’s murder and the psychopathic vampire who thinks he owns her. Veronica and Thane need to find the necromancers before the dead outnumber the living in Miami. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.

I have listened to book 1 a while ago, then listened to others, then came back to this series. It was just as interesting as I expected - which is to say, very captivating! I love the story plot, the fact that the action is fast-paced and the main character. She is the perfect mixture of immature, wise and family trauma background. Your typical 27 yo (well, as typical as you can get in a world with supernaturals). I listened to audio book in one whole day and now I can't wait to get to the next one.

Veronica is back and joins up with the DEA to tract down what is going on with the Risen. And get to learn more about her past and about the death of her brother. The story was entertaining ad fun to read. It was also hard to put down as it just drew me in. I laughed and groaned and laughed some more as I read it. The other characters were interesting as new and old showed up this time around. Just a good story.

This book picks up well with where the first left off. Veronica's path has changed, but she's not sure she likes it, after all boring isn't her lifestyle. However the discovery of undead can change all that, as well as getting dragged into the investigation. The story is all over with some twists and turns and I can't wait to read what happens next.

Life or death, necromancy and rebirth

This is book two in The Last Phoenix series. I enjoyed it more than the first. The story has really come to life now. There's a lot more to our heroine than had previously met the eye.
The story is awash with the Supernatural in many forms and the political manoeuvring of other realms.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I'm off to get book three.

Things get darker in this one with the dead coming back to life and being puppeted around town. To counter the darker nature of the villains, the author has also peppered in more of the protagonist's humor/quirks including her efforts to date in the supernatural community. I'm still enjoying the characters, the swiftly moving action, and the hooking mysteries to solve and will probably move onto book 3. The narrator again does a great job with accents and personalities.

zombies, vampires, angels and werewolves oh my

This second in The Last Phoenix series is super fast paced. The angels and Reapers are responsible for
Policing the supernatural Community but the Fae have unleashed a necromancer who keeps sending zombies 🧟‍♀️ into city of Miami. V May have a guy to date since she needs a distraction from the Reaper but dare she trust any man with her secret?

Veronica’s secret of being the master thief the falcon is out now meaning V has to find something else to do. She ends up being a private investigator of sorts and has some interesting cases and things to do. I am really enjoying V and her world. She’s going things she has to figure out and who to trust. I’m excited for more of the books and more of these characters. The world is a very well built one and has a lot of interesting characters.

Too slow burn for me…has semi-interesting storyline, however I can predict that FMC is the rightful queen yadda yadda, storyline is predictable has awesome sidekick…check….super slow burn love interest….check….only one left of her kind and desired…check….Might try at later time if I need a palate cleanser…but love that FMC is in late 20’s not some just out of high school and think I am awesome…at least she has lived some life before getting on her awesome pedestal…

The second book still wraps you into Stephanie Morris world with her main character Veronica “v” trying to live a life without dangers, a slow slow VERY slow burn still with the most gorgeous Thane the reaper, and try to save the world…again! When Xavier escapes prison, the mages raise the risen and V’s loved ones lives are at stake, there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do or expose to the public to save them. The book ends on a somewhat cliff hanger that makes you dive right into the third book!

What's next?

It isn't enough to have a master vampire after her. Nor adequate to just send a simple zombie mob her way. She also needs threats from werewolves and some double-crossing faes. But that's not all. The Phoenix needs to escape angels and burn through mages, necromancers, and her own internal fire too.

Because it's a Saturday.

I hope you're an adrenaline junkie, because the free fall is steep and stupendous! Enjoy.

The plot thickens in this second installment of the series!!! Not one to make spoilers, so I'll just say that this book is fast paced, with amazing plot twists, lots of unexpected turns, slow burn romance, a parade of supernatural creatures, plenty of snark and a foul-mouthed FMC. If you've read the first book, then it's a must read!!!
