Book Title: Tales of Greek People I read this together with Die Deutschen und ihre Mythen (The German People and their Myths). Each book introduces the past of a people. However, I am a bit unsatisfied with this book. Admittedly, it is a nice book for beginners into history, because it introduces (1) the democracy of Athens and selection system of Spartans which prioritizes physical strength, (2) several important wars, and (3) how the entire Greek was conquered by Macedonia.
It does not answer several key questions: (1) Despite military failure, why does its culture keep spreading and becomes core to western society (later revived in Enlightenment Movement and its democracy evolved to current political systems)? (2) Why did their political system fail to make their countries last long? (Are there bugs?) (3) What elements of ancient Greek time becomes part of people's language or mindset nowadays?
I look forward to read future books that can answer the three questions above.
