മാന്തളിരിലെ 20 കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് വർഷങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവലിനു ശേഷം ബെന്യാമിൻ എഴുതിയ ‘നിശബ്ദ സഞ്ചാരങ്ങള്‍’; ഒച്ചയും ബഹളവും ആരവങ്ങളുമില്ലാതെ പുരുഷനുമുമ്പേ ആഗോളസഞ്ചാരം ആരംഭിച്ചവരാണ്‌ മലയാളിനഴ്‌സുമാർ. ലോകത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഭാഗത്തും അവരുടെ നിശബ്ദ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യമുണ്ട്. അവരാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ വലിയൊരു ജനതയെ പട്ടിണിയിൽ നിന്നും കുടിയേറ്റത്തിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷിച്ചത്. ഇന്നത്തെപ്പോലെ സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ എളുപ്പം ലഭിക്കാത്ത കാലത്ത് യാത്ര ആരംഭിച്ച നഴ്സിന്റെയും അവരുടെ പിന്തലമുറയുടെയും ലോകജീവിതമാണ് നോവലിലൂടെ ബെന്യാമിന്‍ ആവിഷ്‌കരിക്കുന്നത്. മധ്യ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൽ നിന്ന് ഇന്നും തുടരുന്ന നഴ്സുമാരുടെ പലായനങ്ങളുടെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്താത്ത ചരിത്രത്തെ ബെന്യാമിൻ ഈ നോവലിൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

Benyamin (born 1971, Benny Daniel) is an Indian novelist and short story writer in Malayalam language from Nhettur, Kulanada, Pattanamtitta district of the south Indian state of Kerala. He is residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1992, from the age of twenty, and his works appear regularly on Malayalam publications in Kerala.

For a person of Indian origin and especially if you are from the southern side of India, how far you can go back in your ancestry tree depends solely on how solid the memory of your family members would be. If your grandparents and others around that age are well versed in recounting names, years/months and locations then you can travel along the branches of this tree efficiently and that might reveal some fascinating stories. The real question however is how interested would a person be in such a pursuit ? The narrative of Benyamin’s latest novel begins with an unlikely protagonist – Manu Reji embarking on such a journey.

Manu is the son of parents who have returned after a long stint in the Middle East and is in his 20’s having just finished his graduation. Other than spending time with his girlfriend, there is very little that he does on a daily basis. He is undecided as to which path he wants to pursue for his future and is taking it one day at a time when he is diagnosed with pneumonia and lands up in a hospital. A snippet of memory makes him curious and leads him to give some thought about one of his ancestors – Mariamma Yohannan and as to what her life journey might have been. Mariamma was one of the pioneers in the field of nursing and she had served as a military nurse for the British in Singapore and Borneo during WWII at the heights of Japanese occupation. A trivial interest in understanding the past of his ancestor soon develops into an obsession which starts to consume Manu completely. These historical facts lead him to dive deeper into clues and the journey of investigation transforms him into a more empathetic, focused and curious individual. Trying to trace the life of a person from eight decades ago is not an easy task and yet he relies on the internet and the memory of elders (family and strangers alike) to traverse through these challenges. Eventually he has to decide on physically taking up the investigation and that too in the heart of Africa which leads him to some remarkable and tragic discoveries.

There is a larger image that Benyamin places in this novel and that is about the lives of nurses from Kerala who live and work outside India. The protagonist and his family hail from a village in central Kerala where a lot of families have sought their fortunes working as nurses in the Middle East and Europe. In order to secure a livelihood for their families and in search of financial independence, a lot of women pursue this career their entire adult lives. There are sketches of this large majority through the various women in Manu’s life : his mother, sister, his aunts, his friend - Mariya and the invisible presence of his great-great grandmother Mariamma. The sacrifices, devotion and dreams of these women is what the larger canvas of this story is all about. Kerala is widely renowned for the large Non-Resident Indian (NRI) population of men who have forged their paths in the Middle East all through the late 70’s till the early 90’s. But the truth remains that much before this well known migrations, there have been silent pioneers who lit a candle flame of hope in the minds of a lot of dreamers to follow. Nishabdha Sancharangal in Malayalam translates to Silent Travels and it is these silent travels that we the readers get to share.

Recommended, One of the first novels that I have read where the Covid pandemic and the new world order makes an appearance.

ഇന്നത്തെ പോലെ യാത്ര സൗകര്യങ്ങളും വാർത്താവിനിമയ സംവിധാനങ്ങളും ഇല്ലാത്ത കാലത്ത് കുടിയേറ്റത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കുടുംബത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ കടൽകടന്ന മറിയാമ്മ എന്ന നേഴ്സിന്റെ  സഞ്ചാരപാത തേടി അവരുടെ നാലാംതലമുറ നടത്തുന്ന അന്വേഷണമാണ് നിശബ്ദ സഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ.പുരുഷനും മുൻപേ ആഗോള സഞ്ചാരം ആരംഭിച്ച മലയാളി നഴ്സുമാരുടെ ലോക ജീവിതം ആവിഷ്കരിക്കുന്ന നോവൽ.

വളരെ ആകാംക്ഷയോടും താൽപര്യത്തോടും കൂടെ വായിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയ ഒരു നോവലാണിത്.ഒന്നാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധവും രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധവും നടക്കുന്ന സമയത്താണ് നേഴ്സുമാർ  നാട്ടിൽനിന്നും വിദേശത്തേക്ക് കുടിയേറിയത്. ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അവരുടെ കുടുംബത്തന്റെ സ്ഥിതി മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താൻ ആ വിദേശ സേവനം വഴി അവർക്ക് സാധിച്ചു.1930 ആണ്ട് അവസാനം ആണ് മറിയാമ്മ എന്ന നേഴ്സ് സിംഗപ്പൂരിൽ എത്തിയത്.

സ്വന്തം തലമുറയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മനു എന്ന യുവാവിന്റെ അന്വേഷണമാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. ഗൾഫിൽ തുടങ്ങി ജർമ്മനി, സിംഗപ്പൂരും പിന്നീട് ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ടാൻസാനിയ വരെ അന്വേഷണം കൊണ്ടെത്തിച്ചു. മറിയാമ്മയുടെ ജീവചരിത്രം പൂർണമായി അറിയാൻ മനു ടാൻസാനിയയിലേക്ക് യാത്ര തിരിക്കുന്നു.ഒരുപാട് അന്വേഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഉറക്ക രോഗം എന്ന പകർച്ചവ്യാധി പിടിച്ച് മറിയാമ്മ മരിച്ചു എന്ന് അറിയുന്നു. മറിയാമ്മയുടെ കല്ലറ തേടി മനു തന്റെ അന്വേഷണം വീണ്ടും തുടരുന്നു.

വളരെ മനോഹരമായ ഭാഷയിൽ ആണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ ഈ നോവൽ രചിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചരിത്രം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന ആർക്കും ഈ നോവൽ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടും.മഞ്ഞവെയിൽ മരണങ്ങൾ പോലെ തന്നെ വളരെ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ വായിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയ നോവലാണിത്.📖🌺

"ജീവിതം ഹനിക്കപ്പെടാം എന്നറിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട്  ഇറങ്ങി പുറപ്പെടാൻ തയ്യാറായ എത്രയോ പേരുടെ സന്നദ്ധതയുടെ ബാക്കി പത്രമാണ് ഇന്ന് നാം ചുറ്റും കാണുന്ന ആരോഗ്യലോകം. ആരുടെയും പിൻബലമില്ലാതെ തികച്ചും ഏകാകികളായി അവർ ലോകത്തിന്റെ അതിരുകളോളം  പറന്നു ചെന്നു. ആർട്ടിക്  പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ മഞ്ഞുവീണ വിദൂരഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലും മണൽക്കാടുകൾക്കു നടുവിലെ ഉൾനാടുകളിലും ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ദരിദ്രരായ മനുഷ്യർക്കിടയിലും കടന്നു ചെന്ന് അവർ തങ്ങളുടെ സേവനസാന്നിധ്യമറിയിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ഒട്ടുമേ കാലൊച്ചയില്ലാത്ത നടത്തങ്ങളായിരുന്നു അവയൊക്കെയും. തീർത്തും നിശബ്ദസഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ"

മാന്തളിർ ദേശത്തെ പറക്കുന്നേൽ കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്നും കുടുംബത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ വീടുവിട്ടിറങ്ങി അന്യ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോയ മറിയാമ്മ എന്ന നഴ്സിന്റെയും കടൽകടന്നു പോയ പലരുടെയും ജീവിതമാണ് ഇതിലൂടെ ബെന്യാമിൻ പറയുന്നത്. മറിയാമ്മയുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലെ, അവരുടെ നാലാം തലമുറയിൽപെട്ട മനു എന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന്റെ യാദൃശ്ചികമായി തുടങ്ങുന്ന അന്വേഷണവും, തുടർന്നുള്ള യാത്രയുമാണ് ഇതിവൃത്തം.

ഇന്നും കടൽകടന്നു അന്യദേശങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ജീവിതം തേടി പോകുന്നവർ കുറവല്ല. ഇന്നത്തെപോലെ സജ്ജീകരണങ്ങളോ സുഖകരമായ യാത്രസൗകര്യങ്ങളോ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്ത്. കേട്ടുകേൾവി പോലുമില്ലാത്ത ആഫ്രിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോലും കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നും സ്ത്രീകൾ ജോലിക്ക് പോയിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്ന് ഇതിൽ ബെന്യാമിൻ പറയുന്നു. ഈ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ ത്യാഗവും സമർപ്പണവും സ്വപ്നങ്ങളും അവരുടെ കുടുംബങ്ങളെയും പിൻമുതലമുറയെയും അയൽക്കാരെയും മറ്റും അവർ സഹായിച്ച രീതി വളരെ മനോഹരമായി പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഇതുവഴി അവരുടെ ദേശവും അവരോടൊപ്പം ഉയർച്ചയിലേക്ക് പോയി. ഇന്നീ കേരളത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന വികസനവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും ഈ സാമ്പത്തിക അടിസ്ഥാനവുമൊക്കെ കാലങ്ങളായി ഈ കടൽ കടന്നു പോയവരുടെ അധ്വാനത്തിന്റെയും കൂടി ഭലമാണ്.

കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറച്ച് കാലമായി ലോകം അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കോവിഡ് കാലത്തിന്റെ സാഹചര്യങ്ങളും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളും തടസ്സങ്ങളും നോവലിന്റെ അവസാനഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിന്റെ തീക്ഷണത വെളിവാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടും, ഇനിയൊരു യാത്രയുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷ നിലനിർത്തിക്കൊണ്ടും നോവൽ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

മലയാളി നഴ്സുമാർ അതിജീവനത്തിന് വേണ്ടി കടലുകൾ താണ്ടി അന്യനാട്ടിൽ ചെന്ന് കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ആദിമ ചരിത്രമാണ് ഇവിടെ കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നത്. രോഗക്കിടക്കയിൽ തന്നെ പരിചരിക്കുന്ന മരിയ എന്ന നഴ്സിന്റെ പരിചരണം മനു എന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ നഴ്സുമാരെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ധാരണകളാകെ മാറ്റിമറിക്കുന്നു. ഈ മാറ്റം അയാൾക്കു നാലു തലമുറ മുൻപുള്ള മറിയാമ്മ യോഹന്നാൻ എന്ന വല്യമ്മ വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപേ വിദേശത്ത് നഴ്‌സായി ജോലിക്കു പോയതും തുടർന്നുണ്ടായ കാര്യങ്ങളും അന്വേഷിച്ചറിയാനുള്ള ത്വര ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. മനുവിന്റെ അന്വേഷണത്തിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ ചരിത്രം പറഞ്ഞു പോകുന്നത്. അന്വേഷണത്തിനോടൊപ്പം ഒരു യാത്രാനുഭവമായി കൂടെ ഇതിനെ കണക്കാക്കാം. സിങ്കപ്പൂരിൽ തുടങ്ങി ടാൻസനിയയിലെ മൊറോഗോറോ എന്ന ചെറുപട്ടണത്തിൽ ചെന്നു നിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ യാത്ര ഒരുപാട് അനുഭവങ്ങൾ പങ്കു വയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിഭാവുകങ്ങൾ ഒന്നുമില്ലാത്ത ജീവിതഗന്ധിയായ കഥയാണ് ഇതിൽ പറയുന്നത്.

"നമ്മുടെ മുറികൾ നാം തന്നെ അകത്തുനിന്ന് പൂട്ടുകയാണെങ്കിൽ അത് സുരക്ഷയും പുറത്തു നിന്ന് ���റ്റൊരാൾ പൂട്ടുമ്പോൾ അത് ജയിലുമായി മാറുന്നു'' എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഇവിടെ പറയുമ്പോൾ ഇക്കാലത്തെ നമ്മുടെ കോവിഡ് ജീവിതം അടിവരയിടുകയാണ്. മികച്�� ഒരു വായനാനുഭവം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം.

തൻ്റെ മൂന്ന് തലമുറക്ക് മുമ്പ് വിദേശത്ത് ജോലിക്കായി പോയ മറിയാമ്മ യോഹന്നാൻ എന്ന നേഴ്സിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ച് മനു നടത്തുന്ന യാത്രയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. മദ്രാസിൽ നിന്ന് സിങ്കപ്പൂർ വഴി മറ്റ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ഭാഷ പോലും അറിയാതെ സ്വന്തം വീട്ടുകാരുടെ കഷ്ടപ്പാടും ദുരിതവും മാറ്റാനായി, തിരിച്ചു വരുമോ എന്ന് പോലും അറിയാതെ പ്രവാസ ജീവിതം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് പോയ പലരെയും പോലെ മറിയാമ്മ നേഴ്സും പോയി. വീട്ടുകാരുടെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട് മാറ്റി തൻ്റെ സഹോദരങ്ങളെ പഠിപ്പിക്കാനും ജോലി നേടിക്കൊടുക്കാനുമെല്ലാം അവർക്കായി. മറിയാമ്മ അമ്മച്ചിക്ക് എന്ത് പറ്റിയെന്നറിയാൻ മനു തീരുമാനിച്ചു. മറിയാമ്മ അമ്മച്ചി അയച്ച കത്തുകളും പലരും പറഞ്ഞ് അറിഞ്ഞ കഥകളുടെയും ബലത്തിൽ മനു നടത്തിയ യാത്രയിൽ വായനക്കാരെയും കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകാൻ ബെന്യാമിനായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആദ്യം മുതൽ ആകാംഷയോടെ, നിർത്താതെ വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാവുന്ന പുസ്തകമാണിത്.

ഒരു നല്ല വായന അനുഭവമാണ് ഇ പുസ്തകം. നേഴ്സ് സഹോദരിമാരുടെ ത്യാഗനിർഭരമായ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു തുറന്നുകാട്ടൽ. മഞ്ഞുമൂടിയ ആർട്ടിക് പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും, മണൽ നിറഞ്ഞ മരുഭൂമികളിലും,ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഉൾനാടുകളിലും അവർ നടത്തിയ നിശ്ശബ്ദസഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ. പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ അവസാനമാവുമ്പോൾ നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരാളെ കണ്ടെത്തിയ സംതൃപ്തി തോന്നും.

“Nishabdha Sancharangal” which can be translated to English to be read as “Silent Travels” is a beautiful novel by the famous Benyamin.

The book showcases two points- how well or do you even know your ancestors & the life of a Nurse.

The book starts with Manu Reji – the protagonist being hospitalized as he has had a severe bout of Pneumonia. Manu is an engineering graduate and the younger son to his parents who were in Bahrain for a huge part of their life. He has no purpose in life as of now and prefers to continue living the lazy life without pursuing a job and having fun with his girlfriend Janaki.
During his stay at the hospital's ICU and rooms, he becomes very grateful and is in complete awe to the work carried out by the nurses there. That is when he remembers about having taken out a post card from a cupboard in his old ancestral home. The post card was from Mariamma Yohannan – Manu’s Great Grandfather’s sister- who was a nurse in Singapore and Borneo during World War II. After his hospital period, Manu is on a fanatical journey to find out more about his ancestor Mariamma Yohannan, her life, how she became a nurse, how she reached Singapore and how she died. This is not an easy task as we all know there were no computers or internet and the memory of elders in the family or neighbors and letters or personal diaries are the only sources.
Being able to trace the life of one’s ancestor and that too to at least 8 decades back can surely be called a crazy obsession, however Manu does try his best. From his small village “Manthalir” to numerous places in Africa Manu’s journey is tedious and moving.
In his quest to find out more about Mariamma Ammachi, Manu also finds out more about other women in his life- his grant aunt, his aunt (father’s sister), his mother and his own sister- who all became nurses for specific reasons. And all these women loved their profession and considered it a service.
We are all familiar with malayalee nurses in Gulf countries, UK and USA from 1970 onwards but this book tells us that there have been many women who have migrated to even countries in Africa to secure a livelihood for their families way back in 1940’s itself. The sacrifice, dedication and dreams of these women and the way they helped their families, neighbors and juniors is very beautifully told.
The author towards the last few chapters also brings in the current Covid pandemic situation and end the book on a tearful note.

ഓരൊ തലമുറകൾ പിറകോട്ടു നോക്കുമ്പോഴും അവരെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള നമ്മുടെ അറിവുകൾ ചുരുങ്ങുന്നത് എന്തു കൊണ്ടാണ്? അറിയാൻ നമ്മൾ ശ്രമിക്കാത്തതു കൊണ്ടാണോ?... അതോ നമുക്കു മുന്നേ നടന്നവർ പറഞ്ഞുതരാൻ മറന്നതോ, അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിൽ വരും തലമുറയോട് നമ്മളും ഇതേ മറവി ആവർത്തിക്കുമോ?..

🛫"ദേശാടനങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും വെറുതെയല്ല. വഴിയിൽ നാം കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്ന ഓരോ മനുഷ്യനും ഭാവിജീവിതത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു മൂന്നാംകണ്ണ് തുറന്നു തരുന്നുണ്ട്". ബെന്യാമിൻ്റെ ഇതു വരെയുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും വായിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ നോവലായ നിശബ്ദസഞ്ചാരങ്ങളും അത്യധികം സന്തോഷത്തോടെയും ആവേശത്തോടെയുമാണ് വായിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയത്. ഈ നോവലിലുള്ള അന്വേഷണങ്ങൾ മഞ്ഞവെയിൽ മരണങ്ങളെയും കലാപങ്ങളും യുദ്ധങ്ങളും നിസ്സഹായാവസ്ഥയും അൽ അറേബ്യൻ നോവൽ ഫാക്ടറിയെയും മുല്ലപ്പൂനിറമുള്ള പകലുകളെയും മാന്തളിർ എന്ന ദേശത്തെ തന്നെ ഇതിലും കൊണ്ടുവന്നിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് മാന്തളിരിലെ 20 കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് വർഷങ്ങളെയും എന്നെ ഓർമിപ്പിച്ചു.

🛫നാമോരോരുത്തരും നിലവിൽ അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കോവിഡ് 19 വൈറസിനെക്കുറിച്ചും നോവലിൻ്റെ അവസാനതാളുകളിൽ കഥാകൃത്ത് എഴുതിച്ചേർത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. മറിയാമ്മ യോഹന്നാൻ്റെ ശവകുടീരം കണ്ടെത്തി മനു ലക്ഷ്യം സാധ്യമാക്കുമ്പോഴും മറ്റൊരു മരണം മനുവിനെയെന്ന പോലെ ഓരോ വായനക്കാരെയും നിരാശയിലാഴ്ത്തുകയാണ്. ബോഗൻവില്ലകൾ അനശ്വരപ്രണയത്തിൻ്റെ പ്രതീകമായി തുടരും. അതുപോലെ മനുവിൻ്റെ യാത്രകളും ഇവിടെ അവസാനിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഓരോ വായനക്കാരും തീർച്ചയായും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു നോവൽ തന്നെയാണ് നിശബ്ദസഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ.

If grandparents and older relatives possess a strong recollection of names, dates, and locations, it becomes easier to explore the branches of the family tree and uncover captivating stories. However, the real question lies in the level of interest an individual has in pursuing such a venture.

In Benyamin's novel, a broader theme emerges, shedding light on the lives of nurses from Kerala who reside and work outside of India. The protagonist and his family originate from a village in central Kerala, where many families have sought opportunities as nurses in the Middle East and Europe. These women dedicate their entire adult lives to secure a livelihood for their families and attain financial independence. The author presents glimpses of this vast majority through various female characters in Manu's life: his mother, sister, aunts, his friend Mariya, and the subtle presence of his great-great grandmother, Mariamma. The sacrifices, devotion, and aspirations of these women form the larger tapestry of the story.

Kerala is renowned for its significant population of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), predominantly men who have forged paths in the Middle East from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. ബന്യാമന്റ രചനാ രീതിയും കൌശലങ്ങളും എല്ലാം ഈ നോവലിലും ആവർത്തിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ആദ്യവസാനം ആകാംക്ഷ നിലനിർത്താനും പുസ്തകം വെക്കാതെ വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാനും വായനക്കാരെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. അതിലുപരി യുള്ള പാത്രസൃഷ്ടിയോ വായനക്കാരെ മഥിക്കുന്ന വിധമുള്ള ആഖ്യാന കുശലതയോ പതിവു പോലെ ബന്യാമന്റെ ഈ നോവലിലും ഇല്ല.

അവിചാരിതമായി കിട്ടിയ ഒരു കത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയ വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ് മരിച്ചുപോയ തൻ്റെ വല്യമ്മച്ചിയുടെ ജീവിതം അന്വേഷിച്ച് ഇറങ്ങിയ മനുവിലൂടെയാണ് 'നിശബ്ദ സഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ' കഥ പറയുന്നത്. 2 തലമുറ മുൻപുള്ള, രണ്ടാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധകാലത്ത് തൻ്റെ കുടുംബത്തെ പട്ടിണിയിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷിക്കാൻ മറിയാമ്മ യോഹന്നാൻ നടത്തുന്ന പാലാ കഥയാണിത്. അവർ അനുഭവിച്ച ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും ഓർക്കാതെ അവരെ പോലും ഓർക്കാതെ അവർ സമ്പാദിച്ച സ്വത്തുക്കൾ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന പിൻതലമുറക്കരുടെയും കൂടി കഥയാണിത്. മറിയാമ്മ Singapore ൽ നഴ്സ് ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന് മാത്രം അറിയാവുന്ന മനുവിൻ്റെ പപ്പക്ക് പോലും പിന്നീട് അവർ ബോർണിയോയും അവിടുന്ന് ടാൻസാനിയായും പോയി രോഗികളെ ശുശ്രൂഷിച്ച കഥ അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. നമ്മൾ ഇന്നനുഭവിക്കുന്ന പല സുഖങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് മുൻപുള്ള പൂർവികരുടെ ത്യാഗത്തിൻ്റെ ഫലമാണെന്ന് ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ബെന്യാമിൻ. മനുവിൻ്റെ അന്വേഷണങ്ങളും ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ യാത്രാ വിവരണവും ഒരിക്കലും ബോറടിപ്പിക്കാതെ വായനക്കാരിലെത്തിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

A great attempt portraying the struggles of the early migrations and how women were silently part of that journey.

The novel starts with Manu being hospitalized and how that affects his outlook on the nursing community. Despite his mom and sister being nurses, it is the care and the interactions with the nurse, Maria that changes him. Further he sets on a journey in search of his great aunt Mariyamma, whose letters he found accidentally in his ancestral home. A pioneer in setting off an unknown journey during the world wars to upbring her family, Mariyamma is a true inspiration. You are set to travel along with Manu as he hits unwinds this puzzzle and face the many hurdles through.

Only sad part is that I chose to read this at a time where I couldnt invest in a continuous read; had multiple breaks. Keeping that apart, thoroughly enjoyed. A great read!

I didn't read the Malayalam version, but since the English translation isn't yet here on Goodreads, I thought I would sound erudite and pick this.

Benyamin's Goat Days was such an arresting novel. Jasmine Days was also quite good. In Silent Journeys, which is the English translation, I was astounded to learn of the women who shaped Kerala's history in their own ways. These journeys weren't just physical, they were life-changing for a society.

Read it just for that knowledge. The translation is quite iffy, and there were glaring errors here and there. The funniest was calling the Chinese 'gambei' as Swahili! Come on Penguin, hire a proofreader or a fact-checker!

മനു തൻ്റെ മറിയാമ്മ അമ്മച്ചിയുടെ ജീവിതം തേടി നടക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ നോവലിലെ കേന്ദ്ര പ്രമേയം. വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന അവരുടെ ഓർമകളും കഥകളും കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാനും അവരുടെ ശവകുടീരം കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാനും നമ്മളും മനുവിൻ്റെ ഒപ്പം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇടക്ക് ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ബോറടിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും നല്ലൊരു വായനാനുഭവമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്. അവസാനം ശവകുടീരം കണ്ടെത്തുമ്പോൾ നമ്മളും മനുവിൻ്റെ ഒപ്പം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. കുടുംബം രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ വേണ്ടി പുറം രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് പോകേണ്ടി വന്ന നഴ്സുമാരുടെയും അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൻ്റെയും കഥയും തലമുറകൾ കഴിയുമ്പോൾ ആ ഒഴിക്കിന് ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മാറ്റവും കഥാകൃത്ത് നല്ല പോലെ എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഈ കൊറോണ നാളുകളിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ കുടുംബത്തെയും ജീവിതത്തെയും മറന്നു അധുരസേവനം നൽകുവാൻ വേണ്ടി ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പറ്റം നഴ്സുമാരുടെ കഥകൾ നമ്മൾ നിത്യം വാർത്തകളിൽ വായിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഈ പുസ്തകം അവരുടെ കഥ അണ്. സ്വന്തം വീടും നാടും വിട്ട് കേട്ടുകേൾവി പോലും ഇല്ലാത്ത രാജ്യത്തേക്ക് കുടിയേറി കുടുംബത്തിൻ്റെ പട്ടിണിയും കടവും എല്ലാം തീർത്ത ഈ മാലാഖമാരെ നമ്മുടെ ചുറ്റും കാണാം.

ഒരു നാടിന്‍റെ പുരോഗതി എത്രയോ പേര്‍ നടത്തിയ നിസ്വാര്‍ത്ഥമായ പ്രവാസത്തിലൂടെയാണ്.ഈ നോവലില്‍ , ഈ അടുത്ത കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍, ലാത്വിയക്ക് പോകുന്ന ആഫ്രിക്കക്കാരനെ കാണാം. അവനെ പോലുള്ളവരിലൂടെ ആവാം ആഫ്രിക്കയുടെ പുരോഗതി.

Another interesting tale by Benyamin based in Manthalir. This investigative novel deals with life of one female nurse who migrated from rural Kerala to foreign lands in the pre independence period in search of work and to escape poverty.
I think It's really an unexplored theme in malayalam. Kudos to the author.

വീണ്ടും ഒരു ബെന്യാമിൻ മാജിക്‌. മനുവിന്റെ മറിയാമ്മ അമ്മച്ചിയെ തേടിയുള്ള അന്വേഷണം ഞാൻ എന്ന വായനക്കാരൻ നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണം പോലെ തോന്നി. അത്രേമേൽ ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായ നോവൽ. നോവൽ വായിക്കും മുൻപ് വ്യക്തിപരമായി നഴ്സിങ് എന്ന ജോലി എനിക്ക് അത്രയ്ക്ക്ഇഷ്ടമില്ലായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ ഇപ്പോൾ അവരോടൊക്കെ ഉള്ളുതുറന്ന ബഹുമാനം മാത്രം, സ്നേഹം മാത്രം. കൂടുതൽ പറയാൻ വാക്കുകൾ ഇല്ല. അത്രമേൽ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട രചന.

ബെന്യാമിന്റെ മികച്ച ഒരു നോവൽ, ആദ്യം വായിച്ചത് "മഞ്ഞ വെയിൽ മരണങ്ങൾ " ആയതിനാൽ, ചില സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു പുതുമ നഷ്ടപെട്ട പോലെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നത് മാറ്റി നിറുത്തിയാൽ വളരെ നല്ല അവതരണം. ✌️
