About the author

Rock Whitehouse

Rock grew up in Westlake, Ohio, a far-western suburb of Cleveland, back when it was mostly farms and grape vineyards. He and other kids his age picked grapes in the summer. There were plenty of open fields and woods to explore and Rock and his friends spent much of their 'idle' time outside getting dirty.

After Westlake High School, he joined the US Air Force where he was assigned to technical intelligence work at NSA/Fort Meade, MD, Shemya AFB (now Eareckson Air Station), and SAC HQ at Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska.

After service he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology, studying first at Lorain County Community College and then Cleveland State University, under the GI Bill. Rock has always praised the education he got, calling it the best cheap education anyone could ask for.

He started in the hospital lab as an ASCP-registered Medical Technologist, but soon transitioned to managing the lab information system, and eventually set off as a contractor to develop an Anatomic Pathology System for 3M. This was one of the first significant lab products founded on Unix, a window-based user interface, and a commercial relational database. Some years later he was a senior software engineer on the ALS->HBO&Co->McKesson->Allscripts Horizon Lab system. (M&A is such fun for the employees, right?)

In a way, he's always been a writer, He wrote sci-fi stories in long hand on notebook paper in middle school. (Thankfully those are all lost to posterity) Even at NSA he was known for the ability to write clear, accurate daily reports and this continued into his IT days, where documentation and explanation was (and still is) so important. He's always wanted to write 'for real' and with his retirement he's run out of excuses.

Of course, he's never been all work and no play so together with his long-suffering (like, 43 years long) wife Carey, he has two wonderful daughters, an equal number of exceptional sons-in-law, and five just-as-wonderful grandchildren. Together they are the glue of his life and a constant source of enjoyment.

Otherwise, Rock is an instrument rated private pilot and has owned two airplanes. The first was a beautiful 1968 Beech Musketeer, the second a 1964 Cessna 210D. He is currently planeless.

Rock is a member of SFWA.

wish I’d not started, then I’d not have had to finish

So unfocused, if any of these characters were in the real military we’d all be doomed.
Huge gaps in the timeline, eg the first attack stranded on the planet low on supplies, rescue ship low also, next page everyone’s home.
Middle of an emergency evacuation, shuttle pilot decides to change uniform.
Middle of battle, discuss feelings to see if ok to carry on.
There was no flow it’s jumping all over the place story wise.

A must read for the "addicted" Space Opera Fanatic!

How to begin?? I began this series at least 3 or 4 times by reading the "teaser" offering. You know, where the author offers a couple of chapters to determine if you like it enough to want to purchase it. While the teaser was a grabber, ! was in the process of reading 3 other novels/series at the time. Towards my completions, "Silver Enigma" popped up in my "Still Interested" page again. SO I got it, and went through all 3 in the series in record time!

As a reader of SciFi & Fantasy since the 3rd grade; (circa 1958); this series has believable tech that I could possibly see during my lifetime. The characters are down to earth and believable. The world building is "par exellence"! The series begins when specific crew members are given "shore leave" down to a planet called Ihoria. Shortly after touching down, the planet comes under attack by an unknown force later to be known as the "Preimennant".. The heroine, a young Ensign called Carol Hansen plays an important part in all three books. There is a love interest picked up later. There is so much packed into this series, I really don't know how to put it all down, About the best I can do is to encourage you to buy the 1st book. You'll be hooked after 4 or 5 chapters. As soon as I finished one bkk, I immediately got the next one. At the end of Silver Victory, a lot of loose ends are tied up. By the authors own words, his editor told him he couldn't just leave it like it was. There ARE more stories here to be told please keep me posted .

great conclusion to an engaging story!

I read all three of these over the course of a week - as my wife would tell you, I just couldn’t put them down. Tight plot, excellent handling of the multiple sub-plots, and characters that come to life in that way that makes them feel like your friends, neighbors, coworkers - not just characters in books. I look forward to lots more from this author and I’ll be continuing with book four to see what comes next!

Excellent Series

The background details are well-researched, the strategies and plotting of an interstellar war are convincing, the characters on all sides are strong and well-conceived, the dialogue is realistic, and the relationships, both human and alien, have roots in the world created by the author. Current cinematic space wars may be the more immediate inspiration, but Heinlein (in his non-preaching persona) is in there too. Highly recommended.

Politically Correct War

Really tried to like this series. War is nasty & ugly. Attempting compassion to enemy combatants usually results in the “good guys” unnecessarily suffering. Such is the situation presented by the series. Leaders try to minimize damage to their soldiers while maximizing damage to the enemy. Failure results in unnecessary casualties/losses - as this series sadly presents . Save your time and skip this series!

What a great series

This is a Space Opera series that is built together well. It moves fast it has lots of action along with a nice romantic touch with several different people. Go grab the first book in the series and one helpful thing that helped me was to print out that sheets that the author provided in the back of the book. Some of those details would help keep the characters organized.

Great enough that I stayed up way too late to finish it.

Author Rock Whitehouse has given us a great story with the ISC Fleet Series, and Silver Victory is the perfect culmination of the story. Great writing in both the action and the characters. I expect, like me, you might press pause on your life as you consume the book. Please keep writing Mr Whitehouse.

outstanding series

As a science fiction fan for many decades, it becomes harder and harder for me to find writing I can become excited about. The ISC Fleet Series is one of those finds that I was lucky to stumble upon. Great story line, great characters, a pleasure to read book after book….but so sorry to have it come to an end. Enjoy!

Brilliantly written series of books

Brilliantly written series of books that you can't put down as their situation and story evolves into the fog of space combat operations and the losses on the way are particularly difficult to take

Great Finish to an excellent series

Military sci-fi with great characters, believable dialogue, space exploration, truly alien enemies, and of course some very exciting battles. If that’s your thing then you will enjoy this series.

Very good trilogy

Military story, quite imaginative world building. Lots, and I mean lots, of characters. Most of the sciencey stuff seems within reason, the necessary FTL travel aside of course.

Excellent +

Someone once said "a good book is one that you can't wait for it to end, and then when it does you're sad that it did"... This is one of those!

Just finished the series, it's a good story and a fun read. Lots of characters to keep track of, but it all comes together. Good character development and dialogue and a few surprises along the way.

A very good read.

Enjoyable, well written series. I liked the premise, the characters and the overall story. A little slow in places, but that's just me nitpicking.
