Eden Alvara is a licensed Vulture, picking through the aftermath of violence in demon-plagued LA, and fencing her finds to help support her family. But when a crooked cop reports her for a salvage she didn’t take, all hell breaks loose.
Stripped of her license, Eden finds herself with a price on her head. When the mercenaries hunting her raid her home, brutalize her family and abduct one of her sisters, Eden turns to the enigmatic Bishop—a man with a reputation for violence who, for the right price, can find just about anything or anyone.
With time running out to find her sister before she’s sold into slavery, Eden is determined to get her back—even if she has to slaughter her way through a gang affiliated with the traffickers and face down one of the powerful demons in control of the city.
She’ll need every bit of her burgeoning magical powers to bring her sister back alive—and she’ll need to put herself in debt to Bishop. But when it comes to her family, no price is too high for Eden to pay.
Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.
She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.
Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.
This book got a lot of buzz on twitter, people kept saying how great it was. So when it showed up on my library's website, it was a no brainer to request it. As I started out I felt like I was missing something, like there should have been a story before this one. What happened to the world to make it be so bad, what are the demons, what exactly is a vulture? I was slightly interested in Eden, loved the family she built and how they all were so excited to get to a better place. I hated how that dream was crushed. But then I had to put the book down to do some work. When I picked it back up I realized I was annoyed my questions still hadn't been answered, maybe that would have made me more invested in the book or if Eden could get her family back. In the end this one wasn't for me.
California Demon is the first book in Debra Dunbar’s new spinoff series. Though not required, you would absolutely benefit from reading the Imp series to understand the events that have led to the creation of New Hell, a dark and gritty world where demons run free and humans scramble for survival.
In the midst of everything is Eden, a licensed Vulture, scrambling to keep her adopted family alive while dreaming of escape from New Hell. When her sister goes missing, she is forced to rely on the enigmatic Bishop to save her from child traffickers before it’s too late. A daunting task when you’re up against hardened human criminals as well as a demon madam.
Californian Demon is darker than Imp series. It does a good job of setting the stage for the new series while leaving many mysteries tantalizingly open. Who - and what exactly are Eden and Bishop? Their secret gifts give us an idea while also hinting of other players of a more supernatural nature that may have a stake in their survival.
Can’t wait to see how events play out in the next book in the series. Our Imp may be thrilled with the thought of a demon run world, but Aaru (and Durfts) help the poor humans!
On an absolute side not: I was happy to see a certain game show host once again being given the irreverent treatment he’s been subjected to in the original Imp series since long before he became a (twice impeached) president.
She's back with the Imp world, but from a different area than usual. Welcome to New Hell. Leave your humor at the border, cause there's very little to laugh at here.
Meet Eden. Eden is not Sam. She is human, she has a foster family that she tries very hard to take care of, she has a power she's unsure of, and she's definitely Trouble.
Meet Bishop. He's...well, we're not sure what he is. But he is hot. And he's dangerous. He owns a bar where Eden goes to find him. She needs his help. And, for a price, he's willing to help her; him, and his friend, Bob, who seems to be a dog but is actually much more. Just how much more we're not sure.
Meet Desiree. She's a demon. And definitely not a nice one. She trafficks in humans, among other things. And she has her sites now set on Eden.
It all comes back to Eden. Adversity has become a part of her life and trying to keep life safe and happy for her little foster sisters and her foster mom. A lot to take on for a 22-year-old, post demon war girl, but she takes it on with every intention of keeping them all safe until they can get out of New Hell.
This is not the humourous story of The Imp Series that Debra first introduced us to. This is the other side of things. The hellish side. The side where people are afraid all the time, where work is scarce and safety even more so. It's a world where a young woman strives to keep her meager family healthy and hardy only to be thwarted at every turn...but one. She does have a friend in Bishop, but what kind of friend remains to be seen. And I can't wait!
Debra shows us a different side of her Imp Series in this new one. I may not be laughing nonstop, but I'm engaged, I'm enthralled, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one. I'll admit I was expecting something different from the ending, but this was just as good. And the story, having just begun, is so well done that we haven't come close to any kind of ending, so where she left it will do just fine. Bring on book 2!
Excellently done, Debra Dunbar, Excellently Done, Indeed, as always!
I was given this as an Advanced Readers Copy and wrote this review in my own words and of my own volition.
Spinoff of one of my favorite UF series - The Imp. This one a much darker one, while still quite funny at places with great, unpologistic female lead. I love to see this world from the point of view of someone mortal and quite human. Though, I do have a lot of questions for Sam and the Angels now. It seems they were quite blind for the mess they left in New Hell. I liked the possible romance in this book, especially as I have a theory of who this mysterious Bishop person is. I hope I am right, because if I do the book will be absolutely awesome. But if I am not, it still will be quite fun.
California Demon was really interesting. I enjoyed the plot line, and I really liked the characters. The only downside was the heroine at times. That was a bit frustrating. Other than that, I really enjoyed it a lot. I look forward to more in this series.
Well this is not the couldn't give two shitts Sam, that is for certain. We start in New Hell and it is a lot of description though it comes after a shoot out, police altercation, then sales of product, then comes the description, the dystopia, the family, two young foster sisters and a foster mom, how the day, water, money, feels go, to make a long story shorter, slow start with world building and meeting of people but not much in story other than the want to move out of N.H. and her abilities, both hidden and known to family.
It's a new series set in the imp world after the revolution (my word). The Imp series changed a lot of things. I didn't like Half-Breed for the first two books, it was meh, then the 3rd and 4th did a good job and I wanted more. I don't think that will happen here.
First, she is writing it semi serialized, as we get a lot of people we know little about but want more, we know some about her but a lot is not explain and even more that she doesn't know and doesn't question, a little maddening. And finally the world is interesting but very under explained. So I was hoping all the way through to get some answers but only the high on her list saves is answered and not to a epilogue greatness. She didn't do this with Imp or the rest of her books so it is very annoying to me. I feel it went nowhere, and we got teases for the characters and world, which in reality, is very interesting. And that brings done what could have been a pretty good UF book. I hope the next has a better plot and more answers.
Ooooh!!! This hit hard!! This was a bit on the dark side but it feels like a highly magical, almost post-apocalyptic L.A. which is something I've not seen yet. Fan-fucking-tastic with the pace, action and storyline. You feel the FMC's desperation and strength and cunning. This was so great!! Onto book 2!
FYI: This series is the start of a spinoff series that takes place in the Imp series world. The series does stand alone.
I suspect I’m not alone in the long list of imp series fans who were curious to see what the real world political ramifications of the events &/or decisions made by Sam & the council looked like behind the boundary line. Living in the demon controlled portion of the USA seemed like endless potential & I was excited for this book. That’s why I immediately downloaded the eARC & was convinced the story was going to be epic. Unfortunately, this book was something of a letdown (the mystery/crisis in particular). While it was great to get a look into the demon ran part of the USA, this felt very paint-by-the-numbers. It quickly became evident I wasn’t going to love this urban fantasy series. I just couldn’t be bothered to worry about Eden’s career, her owing a favor, getting set up, black mailed, her lack of species knowledge, her relocation dreams getting blown up, her sister’s abduction, her family’s overall safety. 🥱 I had the eARC from dec 23 - Jan 15, needless to say I was not an overly enthusiastic reader. I kept starting & having my attention wonder. TBH Bishop was the only character I was curious about. In the end I ended up skimming a large portion of this book & then skipping ahead to the final few chapters. I’m counting it as a DNF & will not be continuing the series.

When I first embarked on my reading journey with “California Demon,” I wasn’t sure if this read would be my cup of tea. However, very quickly it became apparent that the storyline was really good and I couldn’t put the book down.
Eden Alvara is a licensed salvager. When gangs and other nasties go to war she shows up and takes the spoils of the battle and sells them for profit. Eden, her foster mother and two sisters have almost saved enough money to leave New Hell and start anew. Unfortunately, when she stumbles on a huge take a dirty cop takes the spoils and reports that Eden took the entire load. Now the tax bureau revokes her license and comes to collect her and the money they think she has.
In the process they accidentally shoot one of her sisters and take the other one to sell into human trafficking. Nothing and no one will stop Eden from getting her sister back. That leads her to go to the one man who has a reputation for retrieving things and people, Bishop. So, why does he look like some sexy surfer dude? After agreeing to pay him in installments, Bishop assists Eden track down her sister. Yet, this retrieval won’t be easy especially when there are demons out there just waiting to kill.
I really enjoyed this read. The plot was exciting and the action scenes were the best. While I liked Eden I enjoyed the character of Bishop better. Hopefully Eden will grow on me more in future installments.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
First time read the author's work?: No (I'm a fan of the 'Imp' books & the others set in that 'verse. This book is also in that 'verse.)
So, I’m a huge fan of Debra Dunbar’s books. I loved the Imp series, but after about book 6, it started to get a little...goofy. I discontinued it when the relationship with Gregory didn’t seem to be going anywhere.
When I saw that she was releasing a new series, I couldn’t wait to read California Demon! I really enjoyed this book. It was dark and gritty and didn’t rely on humor a lot like the Imp series did. I think Eden is a wonderful protagonist and I enjoyed being in her head. I do wish we learned more about the enigmatic Bishop! His character was so interesting but there weren’t enough scenes with him! I do hope Debra includes more dialogue between those two in the next book. I’m also so curious about Eden’s magic which was kinda glossed over as well.
WOW! What a wild rollercoaster ride that was! It’s thrilling, intense, suspenseful and with one badass heroine. I could not put it down. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time reading it.
Eden is amazing. She’s sassy, smart, strong and a fierce warrior. I can’t wait to read more about her and the trouble she seems to get herself into. And Bishop - DAMN - he’s a sexy alpha that is hiding some secrets. I need more of him.
This is a grittier and darker world with humans, demons and magic users all trying to survive together or just trying to escape to a better place.
I can’t wait to read more about New Hell and the amazing characters that live and survive here.
Such a great addition to the Imp world! I have to admit when I read the synopsis I was not as interested in this book as I was hoping. It was 2020 and it seemed to be to real. Boy was I wrong! I couldn't put it down. Debra did such an amazing job making the heroine relatable and at the same time kick major butt!
This book has grit, humor, danger and just enough romance. Anyone who is a fan of the Imp series this book is for you. If you haven't read the Imp series I would highly recommend you do. But, you don't have to, to still enjoy this book.
The world has exploded with other world beings. The dragons have laid waste to many parts of the west coast. Our heroine is a scavenger thief for her family. She has two foster sister's and her foster mother Bea. She waits for a crime to go down then scavenges off the death and destruction. This latest heist did not bode well as the cops roll up on her when she is gathering her wares. Which was a whole lot of ammo and guns. Which the cops tell her to leave it and go. But later she finds out the cops framed her by taking the ammo and guns for themselves and blaming it on her. This is a super great story like none I have read before. I am on to the next book in the series. Enjoy.
At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this installment of the series, but less than a chapter in and I was loving it. Eden is a wonderful character and so easy to root for. Even before the demons took over California she had led a hard lifr. But she didn't let it stop her. When her problem raised she meets Bishop. He is another great character. I love his attitude and the way he is so laid back, although I am pretty sure he isn't as laid back as he seems. I can't wait to find out more about him and see what their next adventure will be.
If you've never read a book by Debra Dunbar, you have to get on that! California demon follows Eden, a new heroin in the imp world. Sassy, snarky and hard as nails. After her sister is kidnapped, she stops at nothing to get her back. With the help of the mysterious Bishop, Bob and HP , navigating through new hell(formally LA). Overcoming gangs, demons, tax collector and human traffickers. Leaving behind carnage. I absolutely loved this book, and can't wait for the next installment.
California Demon, the first book of the Imp World: California Demon series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). First off, I loved the concept of Vultures in this dystopian-themed urban fantasy. Eden was a strong, intelligent character whose main vulnerability is her love for her family--and we all know family makes the best leverage. Eden's methods are bloodthirsy and one-dimensional, but effective. Bishop is an intriguing character who adds a lot to the story line. I look forward to where the second book in this series takes us.
I did enjoy this book but not as much as the main Imp series. Eden is a kick ass main character, but the world she lives in is a lot darker than Sam's and I miss the insane humour. I also wasn't as caught by the plot as I have been by some of the other books by Debra Dunbar, I'll keep reading the series- I enjoyed it and I'm sure the series will pull me in further as it goes along, just it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.
I'd really go 3.5 stars. We know this author, and we know that she writes well, so it is a good book. It just took me a really, really, really long time to get into the story. I feared for a time that the MC would be the sort of heroine that is really too stupid to live, but she gets better, grows, with time. I'm moving onto book 2 to see whether she continues to grow and see if I start to feel more attached to her.
I was hesitant to start this new spin off series in the Imp World. Most of the side books are PNR and most days I could do without the romance. But this was a great book. Eden is great character, and I am anxious to find out more about Bishop and Bob. I love the Imp books and this one is almost as good. Eden is not the same snarky "person" Sam is, but who is!? I can't wait to read the next book.
Eden has Sam's sas and cockyness, her attitude, and love of danger taking risks and fighting and knack for finding trouble, and I think she has part angel or demon in her and in lust with A Hottie ' Bishop ' who I believe is and angel . Cant wait for the next book Debra foes it again love to laugh out loud while reading her books
Intriguing characters, great pace, excellent story
I've read all the Imp books and enjoyed them a lot, but this is a cut above. Set in the same world, and told with the same juxtaposition of humor amid some grim events, with characters you can care about, this is so far just all around better.
Well written very little plot holes. Snarky witty badass heroine finds mysterious alpha male. Only thing that made me drop a star is the main characters complete ignorance to the fact that people just happen to know certain information without any explanation why they know that and yet she does ask. Drove me nuts!
This was so much better than the Imp books. However you do need to read the Imp books to understand the world as there is zero explanation.
I’m disappointed that Sam and Gregory has allowed New Hell to be, much less be this awful for humans. But I enjoyed seeing the world through a “human” perspective.
This is most definitely not your normal guy helps Dame for free bit. I mean the guy helps but he’s being paid. It is kinda nice to see a character actually take care of herself and even when she needs help she finds away to get it without the romance part. Not saying there isn’t chemistry!
So, I’ve been reading a lot of Urban fantasy books lately. A lot. Most of them were mediocre at best. This one (and T.A White’s) are GOOD. Really good. The world building, the characters, my emotional connection to them. The writing is engaging, the plot is intriguing and I’m having a really good time. Definitely a winner for me.
So this book is about child trafficking…so Eden just lets the rapist photographer go on about his merry day..no turning him into to Juke..nothing..zip..that right there took this book from a strong 4 star to a 1 star. Everyone else died that anything to do with the trafficking. Also where the hell does Eden think her magic comes from….
Great first book of the new series. Lots of world and character building. Knowing how characters have evolved in her other series, I am surprised by some of the vagueness regarding Eden and Bishop. Book two was pre-ordered at the same time as book one. I can’t wait.
Jolly good romp through a futuristic apocalypse type demon run cityscape. It’s fast paced and has a lot of action and the main protagonist is a gun-toting trouble-magnet heroine.
The writing as always from Debra Dunbar is top notch.
