When I was a little girl, one of my favorite things in the world was Sailor Moon. I was too young to enjoy the manga at the time (this was in the 90s, when I was a teensy thing!), but I was obsessed with the anime and adored the characters and plot. A bunch of young girls running around, transforming into superheroes and saving the day?! Heck yeah! (Let's not even get into how much of my affinity for it probably relied on my unbeknownst-to-me crush on Sailor Mars...)

I went on to check out the manga in my preteen/early teen years, but this is my first time revisiting the series in so long, and it was such a fun blast from the past. This Eternal Edition is gorgeous and beautifully updated, and the story is still silly and action-packed and enjoyable. It wasn't as amazing as little-kid Destiny found it to be, of course, but I had so much fun rereading this and will definitely be picking up #2 of the Eternal Edition set ASAP!

It's not that I haven't read this before, but there's something about being able to revisit such a wonderful classic. I grew up with the anime and didn't really dive into the manga until my early 20s. Reading this again now that I'm in my 30s brought such strange feelings of piece and comfort. There isn't much that I can say about this story that isn't already known, but reading the eternal edition allowed me to see the art more clearer and every single detail in the foreground and background. I'm looking forward to continuing my re-read this year in these editions.

Sailor Moon (tak samo manga, jak i anime) to dla mnie czysta definicja lat 90. Ten klimat, estetyka, wszystko. Wspaniała podróż w czasie.

Silly and fun.

Usagi, our main protagonist is a 14 years old girl who is a bit of a cry baby. She could easily have come out as annoying, but is actually likeable and relatable.
Luna is the "wise" character of the book, she's also a cute cat and that doesn't hurt.
We are gradually getting introduced to the rest of the "Sailors". Each of them brings something different to the team.

All the issues follow the same formula, so you know how everything is going to play out. So far, I didn't mind that. There are many more volumes to go, so if the arcs get bigger, it might get tiring.

I wasn't really planning to read this. My wife is a big Sailor Moon fan, so when I saw this Eternal edition, I thought it would make a nice gift. I decided to read it and become more familiar with something that she really likes. I do not regret it.

I found it to be a good read and I think that for its target audience it is perfect.

Oh ho ho ... what is this?

I'm guessing it's the English translation of the Complete Editions. I hope so because the Japanese versions are like $20-25 at Kinokuniya and I hadn't started collecting them yet.

So what is Sailor Moon About?

Sailor Moon is about a 14 year girl named Usagi Tuskino who find this cat named Luna on the street. This cat is a magical cat who gives Usagi a magical brooch so she can transform into Sailor Moon, the champion of Love and Justice. Her mission is to find the other Sailor Senshi aka Guardians so they can find an lost Princess of an ancient Kingdom which wield an magical artifact called the Legendary Sliver Crystal which have unlimited power. They have to find her and the crystal before both of them fall into the hands of evil.

The first volume covers the first 7 acts of the Dark Kingdom arc which is 13 acts in total. It covers from when Usagi mets Luna and becomes Sailor Moon, to when she meets Ami, Rei, and Mako which they become Sailors Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter and join the team ,to when she founds out Tuxedo Mask real Identity and his backstory and everything else in between. One of the reasons I love the manga is the fact that it doesn't wait for no one at all. While I love the 90's anime, it sometimes dragged it's feet due to all the fillers . So by time the plot picks up it's feel like it been an eternity. The manga on the other hand, is very fast paced which unfortunately was one of the complaints that Sailor Moon Crystal.

With Naoko's artwork and story, the manga transports you to a world that almost feels fairy tale like. Like it's own magical world as you see the transformation of this ordinary 14 year old girl. Who favorite part of the day in school is lunch time. Who would rather sleep or read manga instead of doing Math or English Homework. Who dreams of becoming a princess and being in love to a Warrior of Love and Justice. Who have to balance between fighting the forces of evil, to becoming the leader of the team with 3 newly made friends, to mysterious dreams of a past life, to bumping into this gorgeous but mysterious high school student who makes her heart pounds every time who looks a lot like her new found crush/ally Tuxedo Mask....  Sailor Moon life lessons include: being brave to fight what you believe in, being true to oneself, the strength of friendship is magical and the powerful of love can make feel strong and powerful and everything else in between.

So the Eternal Editions are the Third US Translated Editions of the Sailor Moon Manga. The first one was Translated by Mixx while the second and Eternal Editions are translated by Kodansha. They are bigger versions of the Kanzenban or perfect editions they come out in Japan during the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon.  While they are so pretty to look at with color pages of Naoko's beautiful art, it's heavy as hell since the paper is on is like photo paper. With each volume being 300 pages, I'm glad that they also released the digital editions of them.

Sailor Moon and Naoko Takeuchi really paved the way for the modern Magical Girl genre since a lot things that Sailor Moon did has really become a staple for that genre and the other Magical Girl shows that come after it. From Petty Cure, Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H, and others.  Sailor Moon has also influenced a lot of people from the west as well. So it's suffice to say that Sailor Moon has made a powerful impact around the world.

I went into this with pretty much zero expectations because, again, I’m curious about the anime so why not try the manga first since my library has neither animes? But even despite that I’m still shocked by how much I enjoyed this…even though I can’t clearly figure out why, haha.

The art style is not my favorite as it’s that clear ‘90s “chibi” style that I was introduced to in Rurouni Kenshin, though I will say Sailor Moon is prettier then Kenshin though maybe that’s because this is a shoujo? Or it just shows the different artists’ styles—who knows, but I like SM’s more then Kenshin’s, and some of the panels are STUNNING, especially in these large Eternal Editions (which I feel like if I ever smacked someone with it I could seriously give them a headache, but that’s beside the point).

The characters are all vastly different and even though we don’t get many chapters of the Sailor Scouts bonding I feel like in some way we really don’t need to? Somehow the way this is written the mangaka has managed to present these girls as fast friends with barely any time between them, same with the romance between Usagi and Tuxedo Mask, though I do know just by general knowledge that there’s a future “link” between them all that makes it so, but for the purposes of this volume it actually works without slowing the plot or pacing down.

Speaking of the plot, each chapter is very episodic with a main “monster” to fight and defeat but also with an overarching plot that hasn’t been resolved yet. The repetitive reintroduction of everyone at the beginning of each chapter could have been super annoying, but it did help me keep everyone straight at first and each time was done slightly differently, so kudos for the mangaka pulling that off! The episodic feel did get a little redundant after awhile, but I could ignore it.

Back to characters, I do want to say Usagi is a very interesting choice for a protagonist and not one you’d see being chosen nowadays, lol! She likes girly things, is a bit of a wimp and a crybaby, is very shallow, is obsessed over a boy (though she has every right to be, he’s great!), and yet I think she’s the perfect protagonist. She’s flawed and yes I rolled my eyes at her a couple of times for her silliness, but she grows and is so charming you can’t help BUT like her, not to mention she’s not an insufferable girl boss which is SOOOO refreshing! Even Rei, Sailor Mars, who IS a tough girl isn’t an insufferable girl boss which, again, I really appreciate because these girls are people first rather then labels of Things They Should Be According to Idiots Who Don’t Know How to Write Decent Stories.

And I’ve seen a LOT of complaints in other reviews about how passive and boring Tuxedo Mask is and I’m just like, um, HELLO, what are you talking about?! Dude has no idea who he is but is willing to leap into danger and help out Sailor Moon at the drop of a hat just because (he saves her life half a dozen times too!), not to mention the guy’s got a wicked sense of comedic timing and humor that cracked me up more then once. And he’s not the strongest presence here because he’s not the main character, Sailor Moon is—the other Sailor Scouts have a lesser role then he does in all honesty, so I’m actually kind of annoyed by all the dislike towards him. I think he’s great and he and Usagi are so stinking cute together it’s not even funny. 🤭🥰

(and as a side note, I did feel incredibly old when in the translation notes they felt the need to explain what a VHS was. *Elrond voice* I was there, three thousand years ago…)

So while I still can’t fully put my finger on why I really, really liked this volume or what’s drawing me to the story and characters so strongly, I’m enjoying myself and am eager to continue. Maybe after I read a few more volumes I’ll finally be able to pin point why I like it so much!

As someone who fell in love with anime and manga as an adult, I was not one of those who grew up with Sailor Moon. Reading it for the first time as an adult definitely gives me a unique perspective, and while of course, some of it is quite dated, it is also obvious to me why it is so beloved. It's charming and fun, and there are enough glimpses of a bigger storyline to keep me invested.

This is obviously not my first time reading the Sailor Moon manga but Ive been collecting the Eternal editions and felt like doing a reread. This manga never fails to put me in a good mood. I love Usagi so much and this story of love and friendship means absolutely everything to me. This edition is CHONKY! I love the larger size as it makes it easier to read. Highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good magical girl story or if you’re a Sailor Moon fan!

So I grew up in the early 90s on anime like Guyver/Ghost in Shell, Akira, and Dragon Ball. I knew Sailor Moon broke into the US market in the mid or late 90's, but I was a boy and back than I wanted MANLY things.

Luckily I've grown past that stage and now rom-coms, and Shojo manga and comics are my shit. So I decided why not give a chance to Sailor Moon. I bought the first four books of Eternal Edition for my wife a couple of years ago and decided to give them a read.

I will say I find it amazing Tekeuchi here created something so simple but ingenious. I want to maybe make a video of it since it's so smart. Taking the Shojo ideas, romance, very sexy men, and a bit of spunky comedy and mix it with battle Shonen and some slight mystery/horror vibes. Simple, easy, and it's SO good.

This volume mostly goes over how Usagi Tsukino, a 14 year old middle schooler becomes the guardian known as Sailor Moon. Through this volume you meet a few other major characters like Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus, Tuxedo Mask, and so on. This first volume is very much a introduction to the world of Sailor moon while getting some fun fights inbetween.

I enjoyed a lot of the dialogue and overall pacing of the story. Usagi is spunky and fun, with some really cute moments. Her and Chiba (Tuxedo Mask) are a cute couple that you know are destined to be together. The side cast hasn't been flushed out yet but I liked Mercury and of course Luna, the car, even if I felt there's something not right about her.

I would say some of the references and jokes are outdated at this point. Also, while it's enjoyable art it is very simple. And didn't need the couple of panty shots...but I guess if I was 13-18 year old boy (or girl, I see you) I'd like those. But overall least it was rare.

But overall, very enjoyable and laid back fun Saturday morning feel. I'll check out more volumes for sure!

Re-read March 2023:
Increasing my rating to a solid 4 stars! This manga just makes me incredibly happy and I adore the artwork--it's so indulgent! The writing is also genuinely funny, sweet, and sincere, and can we talk about how queer Usagi is?? 🐇🌙💝

TW: abduction and captivity, brainwashing, amnesia, age gap romance, an almost-kiss between a 17-year-old boy and a blacked out drunk 14-year-old (yikes) played as romantic (double yikes)

--

I had so much fun reading this! It feels like a tween girl's deepest fantasy, and I love it for that. 💖 I didn't watch the Sailor Moon anime as a kid, so I don't have that nostalgia attached to the series. (I did try the anime recently as an adult--while I adore the aesthetic, the music, and the characters, I just could not handle the voice acting. It was too much!) But the story still has some intangible nostalgic elements for me because it relates so strongly to how I played pretend with my friends as kids, where every girl has her own special super power and a cool name and outfit. Yes, it's a little silly and campy, and the storyline is repetitive, (and the romance between 14-year-old Usagi and 17-year-old Mamoru is a bit sketchy, especially all the time that Usagi spends unconscious in Mamaru's arms and apartment...) but the characters are endearing, the vibes are top-notch, and the art is beautiful (and beautifully '90s). 3.5 stars

P.S. these Eternal Editions are absolutely gorgeous! They're larger in size than typical manga, include a good number of full-color illustrations, are great quality paper, and have an updated translation (with translator's notes included in the back that I found very interesting).

I read this because I am planning to do a workshop with students about using comics to learn language, so I have been trying to read as many bilingual comics as I can. Sailor Moon is kind of a classic, but I had never read any of the manga before, and I was a little curious about the series.

Now I've read the first volume and it's... okay.

At first I found it pretty amusing. The humor was wacky and silly and sometimes hit home. Usagi is lovably dumb. The art was hyper cute. And there are some interesting aspects of mystery to pull the reader in, such as Tuxedo Mask and the identity of the Sailor V character.

However, the more I read, the worse the comic became. The sense of space is really poor--I often didn't know where the characters were, and they would just randomly run into each other when convenient and I wouldn't even know where they had met or how. The powers, too, are really confusing. Basically the heroes will suddenly attain whatever power they need when they need it.

This volume also introduces the three other main sailor warriors, and it's really lazily done. Every girl that Usagi notices turns out to be a sailor warrior. The girls also, when they transform, just know how to use their powers (except for Usagi for some reason), and that, too, is confusing and boring.

Sailor Moon may be a classic, but it's not one that holds up well, at least judging from the first volume.

Sailor Moon was huge when I was growing up. I enjoyed the Americanized cartoon as a kid, though I did find Serena a bit annoying and overdramatic at times. I really liked her in this, however. This was my first manga, and I had a lot of fun figuring out how to read it. I found the stories engaging even though I remembered some of what happened from the show. I was a bit surprised that Usagi was only 14. There are definitely some problematic things regarding age difference and consent (stop kissing the unconscious middle schooler, bro). I thought the art in this was a lot of fun, and I really appreciated all the translation notes at the end of this. My library carries all of these, so I will definitely keep reading.

Finally made my way to reading Sailor Moon!! This will be a review for the whole series, so beware of spoilers!

Finished: 7/10 volumes

I can see how this is a classic manga but sometimes the art is just... bad. How does anatomy work?! Lol

I think as I get deeper and deeper into the story, things are just getting crazy for the sake of crazy. At first, there was a solid plot and stuff but now it's just: ENEMY?! Fight, win, repeat.

5 stars for awesome! I've always loved Sailor Moon! I'm currently working on buying all the Eternal Editions and the Sailor V editing as well as all the movies and season. The animated versions are proving a bit tricky. Now to reread # 2 and # 3 so I can do my first read of #s 4, 5, and 6 while I wait to by the others!
