This heartbreaking story—perfect for fans of If I Stay and Five Feet Apart—follows a girl swept up in the magic of her first love, until it all comes to a tragic end that might lead her into the afterlife itself. Soon to be a motion picture on Paramount+ starring Joey King!
After bouncing around in foster homes for most of her childhood, seventeen-year-old Tessa Jacobs doesn’t believe she deserves love—not from her adoptive parents, and certainly not from anyone at school.
But everything changes when she has a chance encounter with Skylar, a senior from a neighboring town who’s a true romantic. Their budding relationship quickly leads to the kind of passion you only see in the movies. As her heart begins to open, Tessa starts to believe she might be deserving of love after all.
When tragedy strikes, Tessa wakes up alone in a hospital room with no memory of how she got there. And then she learns the horrifying news: Skylar is dead. As Tessa searches for answers, Skylar’s spirit reaches out to her from the other side. Desperate to see him one last time, Tessa must race against the clock to uncover the shocking truth of their relationship—a truth that might just lead to the afterlife itself.
Sconforto, dolore e devastazione.
"Beautifully rendered —emotional, heartfelt, thought-provoking, and inspiring."
MOVIE: Soon to be a motion picture starring Joey King. Celebrate Valentine's Day with a paranormal romance, streaming on Paramount+ February 11th, 2022. Here is your chance to read the book before the movie! Watch Trailer.
Marc Klein acclaimed screenwriter, producer, and author's debut novel— THE IN BETWEEN is an emotional and heartfelt story of love and loss and is perfect for fans of movies: If I Stay, Five Feet Apart, and Ghost.
Even though this is a Young Adult novel, all ages are assured to relate. An impressive debut, the character development is superb with characters you care about and linger long after the book ends.
My favorite was Skylar's grandpa Mike (a wise man)—I loved this man! Both Tessa and Skylar come alive on the pages, and you find an instant connection with both. Meticulously researched with dual timelines, a 5 Stars read! I adored the book and looking forward to the movie. Fans of contemporary authors Colleen Hoover and Nicholas Sparks will enjoy.
THE IN BETWEEN —written by Marc Klein (Little Brown), a heartfelt story follows two seventeen-year-old teens. Tessa and her first love, Skylar. Until all comes to a tragic end that might lead her into the afterlife, starring Joey King (The Kissing Booth) and Kyle Allen (The Map of Tiny Perfect Things).
Tessa is a complex, enigmatic character. She grew up in foster homes and never feels like she belongs. She puts up her walls and does not like to get too close based on her past. You connect with her immediately.
She is kind of a loner and loves photography (she is quite good). She loves her vintage camera and does not care about digital and even develops her own and loves black and white. Color is her favorite color (as is mine).
One day, Tessa lands in an old movie theatre to watch a film that is in French (one she does not speak). A good-looking (hot) guy about her age, Skylar, comes in and sits next to her, and translates for her. He is smart, funny, and intelligent.
They have an immediate connection. She learns much from him. He grew up differently than her, a jock, but is quite intriguing and like no one she has ever met before. They fall in love.
What is not to love about first loves? They are emotional and scary, exhilarating and exciting.
There is an accident that leaves Tessa in the hospital. She died and came back to life with heart damage. She is devastated. She learns Skylar did not make it.
She meets a cancer patient in the hospital, and she tells her about "the in-between" and after-death communication (you will find yourself googling with a lot of different types).
Tessa, at first, does not understand, but strange things start occurring. She wants to know more. Is Skylar trying to communicate or reach out to her? Is there a message?
Klein brilliantly uses dual timelines to explore both storylines (before and after) about how our deceased loved ones reach out to us via ADCs (after-death communications). How do the dead mourn the living?
I was immediately hooked and intrigued. The "before chapters" occur before the accident that kills Skylar and showcases Tessa and Skylar's summer romance. There are two storylines, the love story, and the ghost story.
The "after chapters" occur after the car crash when Tessa thinks Skylar may be reaching out to her from the other side. The author blends the two with a cohesive style that keeps your turning the pages.
Even though I am not a massive fan of the paranormal or romance novels; however, I enjoyed the book immensely. Beautifully rendered, the lyrical prose is heartfelt and has much depth and emotion that goes beyond the couple's romance to the insights of love, their parents, grandparents, and how our past can often define us.
The author writes impressively with topics of ADC, photography, medical, and writing from a teen's point of view.
"In the end, I have learned that we cannot shun our deepest selves. Our ghosts make us who we are and who we hope to be. And like the bittersweet memories of first love, we carry these hauntings inside us, tethered irrevocably to our hearts...."
"In life... in death... and everywhere in between."
I highly recommend reading the book before the movie. I look forward to more novels by this talented author and cannot wait for the motion picture.
INTERVIEW: Stay tuned for my upcoming #AuthorElevatorSeries Interview on Feb 11 with Marc, where we go behind the scenes of the book, movie, and this exciting author, screenwriter, and producer. It is one of my favorite interviews. EPIC!
I purchased the e-book and the audiobook narrated by Christie Moreau for a highly entertaining and award-winning performance.
I feel like I watched one of those late 90's-early 00's rom-com movies. Girl with issues opening up and accepting love meets perfect, wildly attractive, kind, sensitive, athletic, multi-lingual boy who shows her love and life and blah blah blah. They literally spend their first meeting talking about Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, and then they just keep making obscure references to their niche interests like they're quoting poetry. I'm not saying If I Was Your Girl had the perfect romance, but I'd rather see two people bonding over Star Wars than... whatever these two idiots were on.
The crux of this story is supposed to be that, in a very short timeframe, these two fell deeply in love and changed one another and then the boy died and blah blah... ugh, I'll stop saying this, but I could've just watched a rom-com and saved myself the time.
The writing isn't bad in here; I'll give the book that. The setting details aren't bad. But the characters, and the romance... it's just not there. It's so cheesy and formulaic. There were good parts, like Tessa realizing that she hides her photos the way she hides herself, and how she tries to push people away not to get hurt, but... geez, the more I talk about this the more things I'm remembering I disliked. There's this whole dumb scene where Tessa realizes Skylar gave mouth-to-mouth (because he's a lifeguard) to a girl who has attractive lips and she spends the entire chapter insulting this girl's mouth because insecurity. This is out of nowhere because Tessa's history doesn't stem from drama with boyfriends - she's never dated anyone before - but of course this never comes up again.
Tessa bonding with her adoptive parents was nice, but it felt underdeveloped. And her best friend was such a cardboard cutout. I can see this working in a movie format, I suppose, but I was so bored the entire time.
1/5 stars. I just, I didn't have fun. Nothing about this felt unique, not even the details about the afterlife and everything. Maybe this would be okay as a movie, maybe I'll watch it, but I just don't want to think about this book again. The romance was the driving force, and it failed me.
the summary This is so heart wrenching. Seeing Skylar and Tessa being broken up, before I actually got to see character development, though it worked for the best, and I like how the ending went, Tessa managed to let go, and all. feedback this is a new section in my review;) I felt that Tessa was such a depressing character, although I can see how contrasts work, but can you imagine: a depressed character who wants nothing for a guy, who is sweet and caring to her from the moment they first met,and the plot continues. overall 4/5 Characters need work. The In Between is a heartbreaking story of how love has no limits, it can reach across spaces and realities. If you've watched the Netflix adaptation, you're already familiar with the plot; in this case, the book and the movie are equally good. There aren't any significant changes and the scenes are kept the same. Seventeen-year-old Tessa Jacobs had a difficult childhood, currently living with her adopted family, love isn't a word or a feeling Tessa is comfortable with. With a passion for photography, she captures every moment but only in black and white, never colour.
A visit to her nearest theatre changes her life forever; a blonde stranger translates the French film for her but disappears afterwards. Unable to forget this guy, a chance encounter causes their paths to cross again. Tessa and Skylar's worlds revolve around each other, they have the perfect Summer love until a tragic event happens. Even though this is a YA novel, the topic of love is something everyone can relate to. The joys, the pain and the memories it brings. Chapters are divided into 'before' and 'after' and this helps the reader to understand the full scope of Tessa's relationship and emotions afterwards. There are side characters such as Tessa's best friend and a patient she meets in the hospital that helps her through her pain.
"𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙨."
This is a paranormal story, but think more Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in the film Ghost. It's not a scary read but more of a paranormal romance. It's an emotional read but there are joys of first love, creating memories and the vulnerability of opening up your heart to someone. There are even lessons learned. The 'in between' moments touched my heart and might have left me with tears in my eyes. If you've read Coming Up For Air by Nicole B. Tyndall, by Gayle Forman or A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie Cole, you'll enjoy this book.
Thank you to Pan Macmillan SA for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A fellow student recommended this book to me and I don't think I'll be able to look her in the eye anymore.
One of the lines of this book was "Love never dies", and after reading this, I wish it had. When I looked at what year this was published I was genuinely surprised, I had hoped we had left the "not like other girls" trope back in the dust where it belonged.
Tessa, our main character, is not like other girls. She likes vintage things, she takes black and white photos (because apparently the color takes away the poetry), and she constantly judges other women for liking things that are traditionally considered feminine. There is one part where she describes another woman's mouth as "duck lips".
I think the part that bothered me the most, besides the pseudo-intellectualism that both Tessa and Skylar constantly display, is the shaming of Tessa's friend Shannon.
Tessa mentally criticizes Shannon for liking makeup, shopping, and money, while at the same time needing Shannon for the plot to move along. She simultaneously rejects her and uses her which seems like a weak writing tool on the authors part.
I don't recommend this book unless you enjoy reading about painfully unlikable main characters.
This book is what happens when a middle-aged man watches a teen romance drama in 1992 and, thirty years later, decides that's all the research he needed to do to write his own. This book is, to a tee, every horrible cliche about hipsters who think they're better than everyone else because they shoot B&W photos on film and think "shopping" is "boring," but somehow everyone around them loves them and is desperate to be their friend. But no, they're too cool to love anyone but each other, and when tragedy strikes, it is the worst thing that has ever happened to anyone else. Not only was this stupid set of cliches relevant about fifteen years ago, but MAKING FUN OF IT was relevant about 10 years ago. This book is too dated to even be worth mocking. Think TWILIGHT--whiny Mary Sue protagonist who treats everyone like garbage, has no personality besides victimhood, and yet still exists at the center of everyone's worlds, along with her Hipster Ken Doll boyfriend and overdramatic angst--but without the sparkly vampires and problematic shirtless werewolves that at least made TWILIGHT semi-entertaining.
Clearly, I hated this book. But not because it's horribly offensive or because the (pedestrian, overwrought, middle-school-esque) prose is really so hard to read. I hate it because it's the kind of book that has no business being published, not when there's a massive wave of new YA books that, while not all fantastic, are at least trying to do something new and modern that actually speaks to what their audience is dealing with and feeling, not to mention addressing the blandness and unforgivable lack of diversity that the YA world was guilty of for so many years. The author is a failed screenwriter whose biggest claim to fame is a very meh rom-com from the 1990s, and I can only assume that his connection to Hollywood is the reason this book is on shelves. He doesn't appear to have ever met a 21st-century teenager, or really even a female human, yet he writes this book and markets it as a modern love story. There's also a movie coming out, btw. I can only hope that both iterations flop spectacularly, and I can't imagine they won't, because dear God, this is an unbearable book that would have been ridiculed in 2007, let alone today.
I watched the movie and of course looked to see if it was a book. 😊 The book isn't bad, the movie isn't bad, just not as amazing as the movie preview led me to believe so I had hoped the book would be better. They are equally "not bad." I do recommend this to people who like YA/NA romance mixed with mystical ghostly realms.
Get ready for a quick and emotional ride. The In Between is told in alternating times – before the accident, and after the accident and Skylar’s death.
Tessa has been shuffled around foster homes her entire life, never feeling like she was enough after her mother abandoned her, feeling as if she doesn’t deserve anyones love. I don’t see many young adult novels dealing with foster homes and foster parents/relationships, so that was a nice change of pace.
Tessa never leaves the house without her 35mm film camera around her neck, and that’s how she first sees Skylar. She captures him on film after a snowstorm on the beach, and she wonders who this mystery boy is. They both end up in the local indie movie theater to get out of the snowy cold and instantly connect.
This is a story of insta-love, and the timeline moves fast, with chapters alternating between the “before” and “after” in a series of countdowns. It’s a summer love of two young people. Reading it, you already know the outcome, and that makes it all the more bittersweet knowing how it will end.
There is a paranormal element to this in that Tessa knows Skylar is trying to reach her from the afterlife and tell her something. I loved this supernatural element to a contemporary story – I was curious to see the ways Skylar would (or could) communicate with the living world.
Tessa’s passion for photography plays an important role in this story and as a photographer myself, I really appreciated and connected with that aspect – Tessa even develops her own film in her darkroom attic. She only shoots in black and white film and will do anything for her art to get the perfect shot, but going along with her feeling of undeserving of love, she only shows her photos when required in school.
The chapters of this book are short, making it an easy and fast paced read at just over 300 pages. Reading this story, I could easily envision it as a movie and I think a lot of people will enjoy this story – even if it breaks your heart in the process. It shows love is worth it above all else, even if you end up hurt in the end – as they say, ‘Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.’
This book follows Tessa, a 17 year old who loses the love of her life in an accident. She doesn't have any memory of what happened prior to the accident and is convinced she didn't get to tell Skylar that she loves him. It time jumps in each chapter to times before the accident and time after.
There were so many moments that really had me feeling everything Tessa felt, I imagined what it would be like to lose my partner and THAT SHIT HURT SO MUCH that I stopped reading the book for a while. But I picked it up today determined to push through and close this story and I'm so glad I did! ❤️
"Romeo y Julieta, Anna Karenina, Cumbres Borrascosas, El paciente inglés. 🥀🌫
The In Between is a delicious little novel about grief, love, and learning to let go. I don't support the premise of communicating with the dead, but it was still an interesting concept (one that I choose to enjoy in a more allegorical sense).
What I Liked: • Tessa's struggle to believe that she is lovable. I think this is a very human thing to struggle with...and the author portrayed that struggle in a really beautiful way. • Mel and Vickie. Obviously they aren't perfect people, but they really love Tessa and it was nice to see how they're relationship with her progressed over the course of the story. • Tessa's bestie, Shannon. Everyone needs a Shannon. Shannon was the best. #westanshannon • The photography. I LOVED this part of the story so so much. Tessa as a photographer felt so right and her pictures were just *chef's kiss* • Skylar? Idk, I have mixed feelings about him. On one hand, I really like him. But on the other hand, I can't actually tell you why I like him, so...do with that what you will.
What I Disliked: • The communicating with the dead (but I knew that was gonna be a thing going into the book). • How casually the teenage characters hooked up. Like, there were literally no consequences or repercussions for that, which I generally dislike because it could be seen as encouraging that kind of behavior, which I'm against outside of marriage. • The insta-love vibes. Skylar and Tessa's relationship escalated so fast that it was hard for me to believe that they could really fall in love that fast. I eventually gave in and accepted it and that increased my enjoyment, but it was still really fast.
Overall, it was a fun summer read that delved into some really difficult topics in a way that was (mostly) enjoyable.
Language: The f-word, bull****, bi***, ass****, s***, damn, and hell are sprinkled throughout. God's name is taken in vain multiple times.
Violence/Frightening: A car accident is described briefly.
Sex: It is mentioned that two characters "make love" multiple times throughout the book (not graphic); a male side character kisses another man (not detailed); some passionate kisses (not graphic); the main character notices another woman's boobs and describes them as "voluptuous."
Substance Abuse: At a party, the characters drink soju. One of the characters is shown drunk (not detailed).
Other: This book contains many scenes involving interaction with, or an attempt to interact with, someone in the afterlife. The content of these scenes include an attempted séance, interactions with an unofficial medium, the use of a planchette, scrying, after-death communications (ADCs), a brief mention of minghuns, and short discussions of reincarnation.
it is SO bad, i wanna give you a zero. but that’s not possible; so i give you: a one. i would not recommend this book to anyone who i truly respect. this book is offensive to literature as a whole. it is set up in a way that makes the storyline very difficult to follow, with it jumping timelines essentially every few pages. this book also makes no attempt at using foreshadowing or irony, making the purpose and result of the book entirely unknown, which is perhaps intended to make the events more shocking. Unfortunately, this was only confusing to me, as i thought i was reading a boring romance story but was in fact reading a ghost story. However, my biggest issue with this book is it’s characters. Especially the main character, Tessa. all of the characters are unbelievable generic to the point i would find it fair to consider plagiarism. tessa is given a few of the most common stereotypes of women in romance novels right from the beginning: she is described, in simple terms, as “different” and “quirky”; she is described as having interests completely opposite of her peers—until, unsurprisingly, she meets her “true love”—and lastly, of course, she has a background filled with traumatic experiences that are only important to the storyline in order to justify her gross and selfish behavior. the other characters were riddled with terribly predictable traits as well: Skylar is the typical “jock” character who falls in love with a dissimilarly unpopular girl, Tessa’s parents are characterized as desperate for their poor, unfixable daughter to love them, and Tessa’s best friend, expectedly, is described as “girlish” and “normal”, and most importantly a stark contrast to Tessa. Because, as the author of the book proves, characters like Tessa are designed to stand out from the others as “special” and “rare”, when in actuality these characters—especially when assigned to a female lead—are by far the most common across fiction as a genre. Overall, i would describe this book as an unfortunate combination of English words and phrases.

The book was very emotional and heart breaking. The story is about grief and how to deal with it. I really liked how the story was going on and how the characters worked out together. But at the end the story fell kind of flat for me.

"The In Between," was a cute book. I didn't love it overall but it was a fast one and one that I could appreciate. At times, Tessa annoyed me but I felt for her - she was grieving and learning to accept how good it is to be loved and wanted. I loved Skylar. He was such an easy character to love. Overall, this story is about loss and grief and love and healing.
If you liked "Five Feet Apart" or "The Fault In Our Stars", then you might like this book too.
My favourite quotes: "Not all love stories are depressing." "The good ones are..."
"Ladies and gentlemen, I give you toxic masculinity..."
"I told Skylar the only girls worth falling for are the spicy ones..."
"Maybe you're not ready to share yourself..."
"The last thing he saw - his final glimpse - was the face of the girl he loved, the girl he now knew loved him back..."
I love the concept of this. The writing it great and engaging, the pacing was good, and at no point did it get boring. But the MC is annoying, and has very little growth (though in the epilogue she’s basically a different person) and the ending isn’t quite what you need. It doesn’t leave a sense of satisfaction or fulfilment. There’s actually very little page time of the MCs being a couple. For some earth shattering, pulling back from death and following you afterlife, it’s missing those moments of connection and their relationship developing.
