McGraw-Hill Education traces its history back to 1888 when James H. McGraw, co-founder of the company, purchased the American Journal of Railway Appliances. He continued to add further publications, eventually establishing The McGraw Publishing Company in 1899. His co-founder, John A. Hill, had also produced several technical and trade publications and in 1902 formed his own business, The Hill Publishing Company.

In 1909 both men agreed upon an alliance and combined the book departments of their publishing companies into The McGraw-Hill Book Company. John Hill served as President, with James McGraw as Vice-President. 1917 saw the merger of the remaining parts of each business into The McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc.

As someone with a background in both neural engineering and artificial intelligence, Principles of Neural Science is not just a textbook — it's a monumental bridge between the biological roots of cognition and the algorithms we build to emulate it.

This fifth edition remains the definitive reference for anyone serious about understanding the human brain, from the molecular and cellular levels to systems neuroscience and behavior. It elegantly weaves together the physiological foundations of neurons with complex topics like learning, memory, and perception, all grounded in rigorous science.

What makes this book invaluable for engineers and AI researchers is its clarity in explaining how real neural circuits operate — offering insights that go far beyond artificial neural networks. Concepts like synaptic plasticity, Hebbian learning, and sensory integration aren't just biologically fascinating; they are foundational to designing more intelligent and adaptive systems.

That said, this is not light reading. It’s dense, thorough, and demands time and focus — but the reward is profound. For those who want to build intelligent machines or decode the mind, this book provides both inspiration and grounding. A true classic that stands at the crossroads of neuroscience, cognition, and technology.
