GR just ate my ready-to-post review so here we go again.

I’ve been so excited for Reborn ever since I accidentally read Book 5 (Reunion) and stumbled across one of my all-time favorite tropes: . One of the end scenes… it’s sort of heart-wrenching but it makes me so happy at the same time (which sounds like a rather confusing combination, so let’s say there’s All The Feels.)

Other stuff in Reborn:
-a certain morally questionable decision is made that will have interesting consequences in the next book…
-Prism deals with being both a superhero and . I couldn’t help but think of Lady Shadow from Studio C… :P
-plus there’s a new addition to the team! :D

things to be aware of:
-a lot less content on the sensuality side compared to the previous book. A bad guy makes some revolting comments about Prism and Fade stands up for his lady. *applause*
-violence: mostly typical superhero fighting. A brief mention of torture; a couple non-descript deaths
-language: medium, unfortunately (about the same level as previous books)
-mentions of a mom feeding a baby
-a Mormon character is introduced

Oh my gosh Prism annoyed me SO MUCH in this book it was unreal. Just…I honestly can’t even pin point exactly WHAT annoyed me so much, but her actions and choices just really boiled my blood at times even though what she was doing was totally justified. I just…I don’t know, but it really bugged me for the majority of the book and is why I dropped the rating so low.

Confusing thoughts about Prism aside, the plot was good and the whole handling of the resurrection trope was both fascinating and terrifying in how things were handled by DOSA—definitely the most “sci-fi” out of all of this author’s superhero books. I also appreciate how she handles DOSA in that, yes, they’re the “good guys” and try their best to do good, but they’ll also cross lines and be morally gray on a lot of issues and every character in every book views them differently and in a variety of ways that’s very realistic; I’m just really impressed with how she’s handled that aspect of this universe so well and realistically.

Definitely my least favorite in this particular series so far but still really good at the same time—just mixed feelings all the way around, lol.

This series just keeps getting better and better!

After the teaser ending of the last book, the "twist" in this book isn't that unexpected. But it was still a jolt to the heart when it happens. Poor certain character who won't be named because of spoilers!

After this author's previous books convinced me not to believe characters are safe from dying, I was so worried for the characters at several times in this book! I won't tell you if they were safe or not, but let's just say there were definitely points that hit the feels hard.

This whole series has been amazing. It has all the fun and adventure of a Marvel movie, but in a well-written, amazing book form!

I don't remember why I didn't read this one immediately. I had it pre-ordered. I think it was a combo of mood and being in a "resurrection is irritating" mindset at the time, and then as other books came out I glimpsed spoilers and was like, eh, eventually maybe. Nearly three years later, finally got around to it 😅🙈 , because I've been binging the spin off series. Between having read the chronologically later spin-offs and remembering random snippets Burke has posted, I had some deja vu that had me wondering if I'd just forgotten reading this a couple times (I literally looked one up to be sure I hadn't lost my mind. Sure enough, Burke had posted the excerpt in her FB group in 2020. I forget the details of my sister's bridal shower but read a line and go "I've read this before" because I read it once in 2020? Okay, useless brain), but I definitely hadn't, as there were parts that were news to me. Anyway, that made for a slightly odd reading experience as parts I knew and parts I didn't, but I still definitely enjoyed this book and read it pretty quickly. Also, even though most of the time I vibe with Fade and his similarly snarky, practical, non-traditionalist personality, he did one thing that...I have mixed feelings on. I get it and the coldly pragmatic side of me mostly agrees, but also, it was brutal and could potentially have legal and interpersonal ramifications...and I kinda expect to a certain degree it will, from what I know of the next book. Still love him, though, but...that was dark.

Reborn picks up the Supervillain Rehabilitation Project story about a year after the last book finished, with Prism heavily pregnant but as busy as ever. The driving force of this book is that Aiden, Prism's brother, is alive (following the revelation for the reader at the end of the last book). Now on the one hand, it's an long-established trope that superheroes rarely stay dead for long, but on the other, I had thought the treatment of Prism's grief and growing acceptance of Aiden's death in Redeemed was very well done, and this revelation felt like it undermined it a bit.

Still, the book does deal with the consequences of finding that Aiden is alive. Prism will stop at nothing to get him back, and she finds her mental balance thrown, as it's repeatedly pointed out to her that there might not be enough left of him to save.

It's Fade that's most interesting here though. He's someone who's never had anything to lose in the past, and now he has not only a wife, but a child as well. This leads to some... dubious decisions. We didn't see much in the way of consequences of that this time, but I expect chickens coming home to roost at some point. It also led Fade becoming over-protective to the point of being on the edge of being controlling. It'll be interesting to see if that goes anywhere, or if I'm just being overly sensitive.

As always, there's not enough Keeper (and Yui) - but then I'm biased towards there being more Scots in media - nor enough Tanvi, who's probably my favourite character at this point. We got cameo appearances from some of the teens from the last book, along with their adopted parents, which was nice to see.

As with the rest of the series, the book is extremely readable. I enjoy the superhero world writ large, and this series scratches that itch admirably. Intrigued by the hook in the epilogue and already looking forward to the next one.

Note: I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

For sure my favorite book in this series so far. I adore the friendship arc between Captain America and Bucky in the Marvel universe. This book pulled off a similar friend to presumed dead to unwilling villain to recognition that they aren't dead to plot line without being a direct rip off Marvel. I'm 100% here for it.

As with previous books in the series, contains some low level swearing, alcohol consumption, and romantic moments.

Another really solid book in this series!

There are two time jumps in this one, one right at the beginning, one just a little farther down the road. All is useful to the plot, as we're dealing with a pregnancy here, and I couldn't wait to meet the little one!
I didn't expect some of what happened, a particular event took me by surprise because it hints about bigger things to happen: if an obstacle is removed, another one has to come, right?

The title to this book is spot on and I was on pins and needles the whole time, suffering with the characters. Some of it was heartbreaking, some was empowering: go go superheroes!

We gained another rehabilitated villain (which I love by the way, he's just adorable) and the threat of long term consequences for some of what happened.
So now what? What will happen to Prism? What will happen to Fade? Buy the next (comic)book to find out!

How far would you go to save someone you loved? This question is central to Reborn, and the character’s answers have some interesting results.

I loved everything about Reborn. Burke hits her stride in superhero fiction, and the results are nothing short of brilliant. This book feels like the middle of a series should: some arcs conclude with great satisfaction while others hint toward a much greater plot.

highlights for me include a certain villian getting his due (though really, he deserves so much more) the new SVR team member coming into his own, and some epic sable combat.

This series just keeps getting better. And if you like audiobooks like me, the narrator does a great job!

All the feels!

Wow! Lots of surprises here, a new baby, a new marriage a new teammate and another onion layer is pulled back in the DOSA would. This ends well again but that epilogue makes you want to read the next one, just in case you didn't want to see these characters again anyway. :)

Best so far in the series! Even with some knowledge gained from following the author's snippets (and just reading the blurbs for future books), I was still surprised and tense and constantly eager to find out what would happen next. (I will say . . . the chapter I was warned about hitting hard was not the one that hit me the hardest. Still, very good.) And I continue to love the blend of superhero action and slice-of-life and the fact that Burke's characters get to actually, you know, grow and have lives while still doing all the adventure stuff.

Fantastic!!! H. L. Burke continues to blow me away with her writing skills. I never once feel a lull, because every moment is used for valuable storytelling. It’s so engrossing and I can see this story in my head like it’s a movie.

Also, kudos for taking a well-worn superhero trope that I DON’T like and making it actually mean something and become something I can like! Namely: characters being brought back from the dead. (Not a spoiler—it’s in the book blurb. 😉) Though Aiden died in the first book, we’re never given a moment to forget about him. The series continually refers back to him as our characters deal with loss and grief, and his coming back to life is actually an important plot point woven in from book one. As such, it felt natural. I REALLY liked that.

(ALSO also, superb way of briefly featuring Alma and giving her a moment to shine, even though she’s not a main character in this story anymore. That was just *chefs kiss*)

Okay okay, I’m just… *physically stops myself from rambling on and on about how fabulous this series is*

The third book in Burke’s SVR series might be the best one so far. Digging even deeper into characters we already know, she unfolds a plot that is compelling and has you rooting for the protagonists to succeed all the way through. I can’t wait to read the fourth installment!

So if you are following H.L. Burkes Supervillian Rehabilitation Project series, then cover alone is enough of a tease to tell you why you want this book. If you are not following this series, STOP READING RIGHT NOW.

GO BACK AND READ REFORMED! LAST CHANCE TO TURN BACK. MAJOR SPOILERS FOR BOOKS ONE AND TWO AWAIT. DO NOT READ BOOK THREE FIRST!

Okay I can kill the caps now I think a scared off all the looky loos.

So short version, all of your emotional trauma is about to be rewarded. Prism is having a baby!
And this book does not make it easy for her. She is still reeling from loosing her brother in book one, and now she has to deal with trying to save the world and not put her baby in danger. Kind of hard while the baby is inside of you. No matter how safe the assignment, it seems like everyone is trying to hurt her. And things come to light that seriously challenge her idealistic outlook on the world.

But it's not just Prisim, Fade is going through some major changes too. He's going to be a dad. but what kind of dad can he be when he never had one of his own? Fade is the perfect portrayal of masculinity. He steps up so much to take things off Prisms plate.

I really loved getting to see more of Yui as a human in this book. Let's just say babies have a way of bringing people out of their shells.

I can not tell you my favorite part of this book as that is a super huge spoiler, but I think it will be your favorite part too.

*I was given an early release copy of this book, because the author is nice like that and not because I begged and pleaded to read this early. My review is my own opinion and my excitement is genuine, I leave this review as an honest recommendation to anyone looking to see if they should read this book. *

A compelling continuation

Prism and Fade are back, and it's more complicated than ever. A baby is on the way, but a villain is targeting them with a power that is both terrifying and familiar.
This book is intense! Had me continuing to flip the pages until the epic finale and wanting more. I love Prism and Fade's dynamic as a couple trying to learn how to navigate being newlywed superheroes and parents.

This story has an amazing plot, wonderfully written characters, and moral quandaries relevant to everyone, super-abled or not. I love seeing Prism and Fade progress in their relationship, and the addition of a baby to their family is well done. The way faith is woven into this fantasy world works excellently. Highly recommend!

Okay, this is another one that just makes me go AAAAAAAH!!!
(The following review-slash-fangirl-flail contains spoilers.)
Seriously, I love this series so much and this one might be my favorite one yet. I mean, it has everything I like in a superhero story—a potential conspiracy plot, a tortured good guy being controlled by the bad guys, an evil mad scientist villain…I could go on. Honestly, it reminded me a bit of The Winter Soldier, which I thought was super cool.
Generally I just…I really loved the plot of Aiden coming back but being controlled by the villain and I just wanted to give him a hug. I love Aiden okay. And sometimes it’s just *so good* when your favorite character is getting hurt and you just want to wrap them up in a blanket. (Or maybe I’m just a weird reader.) I love the way this book continued to address the ongoing issues of our motley team’s struggles after the events of book 1, Fade and Prism’s relationship (Prism continuing to be…well…Prism…even while pregnant was the best), and the fact that DOSA isn’t some ideal government organization—it has corruption and moral issues like any other. I loved seeing Alma return again…and…oh, Wildfyre! He was the best. A unique take on a supervillain’s backstory that has a lot of nuance and believability.
There were so many little interactions that just made me grin. The characters are as vivid as ever and H.L. Burke has created a fun, engaging superhero universe with so much possibility. Also, there are feelings. Lots and lots of feelings. Much feels. Would recommend.
I flew through this book in a few days (and would’ve read it faster if it wasn’t for that pesky thing called a job). I think it’s my favorite in the series yet.

Reborn is Book 3 in the Supervillain Rehabilitation Project series by H.L. Burke. If you like superheroes that feel like real people with real struggles, then you'll enjoy this series. The books need to be read in order. My review contains a spoiler if you haven't read the previous books.

Book 3 begins with Aiden's emotional and physical agony at being "dead." It was really hard knowing the trauma Aiden was going through and wondering how long he would have to suffer. I probably wouldn't have read the book because of it, but I received a free audio code from the author and listened to it a bit every day while I washed dishes or folded clothes.

Rena Gail does a great job narrating the story. Each character is distinct. Only Keeper's accent was poorly done. He sounded like a leprechaun lacking oxygen. At least he doesn't speak often.

The brother and sister relationship between Aiden and Prism really shines in Reborn. Fade, Prism's husband, also plays a big role. Although usually a great support to his wife, he is conflicted and doesn't always know how to help her. And when her life is threatened, he is conflicted about doing the "right" thing. It's not only Prism's life he's worried about, but also their unborn baby's. Sometimes being a villain gets the job done. And Prism takes a lot of risks, so I really felt for Fade.

This superhero series has a good blend of tension, heart, and humor. The characters jump off the page and you feel like you're hanging out with them. The pacing is good with a plot that will keep you turning the pages. Each book has a story with a conclusion, but there are loose ends waiting to be explored.

If you've kept up with the series and finished the first two books, then the cover probably had you as intrigued and ready for book three as I was! Reborn was a page-turner and kept me eager to find out what was happening and how things would turn out in the end.

The series continues to give some behind the scenes aspects of hero life and the interpersonal drama that goes along with it. With some pretty big life events for Prism and Fade in this volume, we get to see how their relationship holds up under the strain and new responsibilities. Some of their conversations became a little dramatic to me, but overall, I enjoyed watching them learn and grow as a couple.

I love Keeper and Yui! Even though we didn't see as much action from them in this volume, I loved the role they played, and it made my heart smile. I hope they make an appearance on the cover of book four! The new villain addition to the team was very cool, and his powers helped the team learn some new techniques. I didn't feel as attached to him as I did to Alma (from book two), so I was thrilled to see Alma play a role in this book.

Once again, the teaser in the epilogue was excellent and should get you excited for book four. I know I can't wait!

This whole series is a page-turner, not just from chapter to chapter, but from book to book. As this episode begins, our heroes Prism and Fade are married and expecting their first child, which adds a new level of suspense and higher stakes. Prism has reason to believe a loved one she believed dead is actually alive but being controlled by a villain committing terrorist attacks on DOSA. She wants to protect her own health and growing family, but if she can rescue this one person …

I very much enjoyed the mix of superpowered action and suspense with the human drama of pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and adjustment to life with baby. Prism and Fade have very different personalities that click with believable chemistry and humor. Their found family of a team adds a workplace comedy vibe, including a stylish villain who volunteers for rehabilitation.

If you like superhumans who are humans first, supers second, I recommend this series.

My favorite of the series so far! And I can't really say why without spoilers... Besides the spoiler stuff, I just love seeing the team grow both in size and closeness. And Fade faces an interesting moral dilemma in the middle of the book that I think is rather gutsy for the author to address, which also earns major points in the "Will Michelle love this?" question. "Super" excited to continue the series!

I love superhero movies, but I've found that most superhero books don't give me the same thrill.
Until now! Burke can write character byplay as well as any screenwriter. She understands all about snark and subtext, too.
As much as I love these characters, the story fell a bit short for me. A couple times, it felt like the character motivation was off or the details didn't line up. Not enough to irritate me but enough to push me out of my suspended disbelief.
Still, if you enjoyed the first two books, you won't want to miss this one. And if you're like me, you'll be itching to get your hands on the next book in the series, too.

Ah, where do I start? This third book of the “Supervillian Rehabilitation Project” was probably the best yet! It was so hard to put down! 😂 The fact that the conflict included my favorite character from one of the previous books played a huge part. But no spoilers here. 😏 Go read it for yourself! H.L. Burke does an amazing job as always displaying the different roles in the story. Really no complaints here! 😁 The whole plot ran smoothly for me, and there’s a few open points I’m keeping an eye out for in the last book coming soon. Which I didn’t know at first, but now, I’m super excited! 😍

This one was spectacular!

There was just so much going on with this one! The team continuing to process their grief when an impossible curve ball is thrown their way, Prism and Fade growing their family, and seeing what lengths Fade will go to to protect his family. There were so many emotional gut punches, and the whole thing had me on the edge of my seat.

There are some twists in this one that I don’t want to spoil, but suffice it to say, there are quite a few heart-wrenching moments. Prism and Fade’s relationship continues to be adorable. Wildfyre is a fun yet nuanced addition to the team. And I love that we’re starting to see more depth from the rest of the superhero community too! I’m starting to see why the author turned this series into a whole universe. 😁
