Robert L. Phillips, Jr., joined the English department at Mississippi State University in 1971 and became book review editor of the Mississippi Quarterly in 1973. As codirector for the Mississippi Library Commission’s project “Mississippi Writers in Context,” a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (1975–1977), Phillips designed and coedited a six-segment television series on Mississippi’s authors, A Climate for Genius (1975); edited written transcripts of the series; compiled and edited a collection of antebellum Mississippi short stories; and wrote introductory booklets on the works of Shelby Foote and Eudora Welty’s The Golden Apples.
Its an analysis of Shelby Foote's writing. It includes some biographical details that make me somewhat curious as to where the author is sourcing that, and it also gives an alright overview of the major recurring themes and summaries of each work of writing he published. Is the actual takeaway of the overarching single theme of his work by Phillips correct? I find it possible but unlikely, in fact probably more done accidentally than not given everything Foote's ever said about his own work, but there's really no way to know so it seems more like Robert L. Phillips opinion on this. Its ultimate conclusion is also that what Foote lacked in his abilities as a fiction writer were why he was even better as a history writer, and maybe if historiography were still a popular, useful and not essentially defunct-for-a-reason (multiple, actually) genre, this would be true, but I think the opposite might be.
