Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.
An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.
Married to her high school crush who is now a US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.
She is the author of a four part fantasy/romance series entitled "The Dragon and the Scholar," the Award Winning (2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction) Nyssa Glass Steampunk series, and MG/Fantasy "Cora and the Nurse Dragon," among others .
This author did it again! She had me so into this story only to leave me in a puddle of tears, angst, and I CAN'T HANDLE THIS ANYMORE.
Though I was scared for these characters, Flourish delivered in every way I really wanted it too. I left feeling so relieved and happy by the ending that I might have been floating on a little cloud of bliss.
However, it was very intense getting there. I honestly didn't know if Kit and Bryce would get a happy ending. I felt just as anxious as these characters and felt I was a little bit of a hot mess.
If you're looking for a feely, but awesome happy ending series, I strongly recommend The Green Princess Trilogy!
*(Many thanks to the author for providing me an ARC. I was not required to write a review or positive one. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*
How dark can one man’s heart become? What unimaginable cruelty is one man capable of? King Langstyn answers that to our horror. His crimes continue to mount, including his deplorable act to ascend to the throne. In title he is in control of an entire realm, but he feels his control slipping because he’s running the lands with an iron, blood-stained fist. And in truth, there’s nothing “kingly” about him and that realization eats at him and drives him to an ultimate act of depravity. He needs to bring others in the same hideous pit with him, making them as despicable as him. One person in particular has always been his target. Bryce. Why Bryce? Because he’s everything Langstyn isn’t. Bryce is noble, has a servant spirit, is willing to sacrifice anything and everything for those that gain his loyalty and his heart. And even when he’s not trusted at first, he keeps offering the olive branch. He’s passionate in doing what’s right and is a natural protector. He can’t not care even if he wanted to tell himself he didn’t. People gladly pledge him loyalty because of who he shows himself to be in his actions and words every day, not because loyalty is demanded of them. Regyn can attest to that. Bryce is like a brother to him now. Wynna will as well as she still remembers the kindness of Bryce was only matched by the wickedness of Langstyn. And the list goes on of those who see the goodness of character that makes Bryce actually noble. In short, Bryce is a true king, and no crown is needed for that to be apparent. So, this horrible act by Langstyn to Bryce perhaps becomes the most agonizing, hardest battlefield yet for Bryce and Kitrin to come through. It’s a fight for Bryce to literally hold on to himself and for Kitrin to not lose the Bryce she loves with every fiber of her being. It’s the struggle to have the family she and Bryce claimed for the future. And as with the rest of the journey, Kitrin, once again, shows a strength that does not falter. As the flora magi, her battle is on a grand scale now, with the lives of countless families in the realm being in her hands. It’s a sobering realization. Yet the one that will not let go is the one closest to her heart, to save her heart, her Bryce. And all that makes Bryce so incredible is mirrored in Kitrin. So, despite the dark pit the two have been plunged into, we have to believe that Bryce and Kitrin find their way, that the bond of love shared really does conquer all in this final journey with them.
The Green Princess Trilogy by H. L. Burke, concludes with Flourish. Yes this really is the final book. Don't start here. Read Flower and Fallow first.
What began as a star-crossed romance became a resistance and is now a war. I don't want to give you any spoilers. I just want to tell you that you should read this trilogy because it is so much more than a romance. It's a Fantasy adventure that fulfills every promise it makes and delivers on every instance of foreshadowing.
Flourish especially, puts the Characters of Kitrin and Bryce through the worst kind of hell. You will wonder that one author was capable of devising a plot device so heinous. The feels will haunt you long after you close the book.
*I received an electronic copy of this book for the purposes of review. No bribes or threats were used to gain a favorable rating from me, other than writing a book I could not put down.*
This is one of those rare trilogies that gets better with each book. The plot gets twistier. Secondary characters have bigger roles. There is a surprise romance, which I loved! The villian's schemes get darker. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and there are definitely some desperate times in this book! There were a couple of twists I did not see coming, and I always love that. However, the book is tied up nicely with a HEA.
The narrator did a great job. She is easy and exciting to listen to.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and this is my honest review.
Flourish, the final book in The Green Princess Trilogy, is intense! Bryce gets ripped away from Kit at a time when she needs him most. She's pregnant with their first child when she hears the most devastating news that Bryce is dead. But there are some things worse than death as both Kit and Bryce are both about to find out.
Wynna, who we meet in Book 2, plays a key role in Book 3. I knew that I wanted to see more of her and so I was glad when that was the case. Regyn is just as awesome as usual. He gets a lot of good lines in this book and Wynna too. Sprout, the plant dragon, plays a very minor role this time. I would have liked to have seen the plant dragons being utilized in at least one battle. This book has a powerful final chapter with the epilogue being the icing on the cake!
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Flourish is book 3 in The Green Princess Trilogy and I so could not stop reading. I needed to know what happened though at points I was scared it wasn't going to go well I needed to know! It was an intense rollercoaster ride as the plot twists and turns and causes tears of sadness and happiness. I will say I'm extremely happy with Langstyn's ending. As well of the stories.
This was my favorite book of the series! I appreciated how much Bryce and Kitrin have grown throughout these books, and it was so cool to see more of the different types of magic in action. If you enjoyed the earlier books, you'll find this a highly satisfying conclusion to the story!
In this final installment, romance, adventure, and intrigue all shift into high gear. Kit is great with child, Bryce is with her and relishing becoming a father, and Regyn is trying to hold the rebels together. That balance will shift quickly in response to King Langstyn's ruinous rule of the kingdom. Each of our principals will sacrifice something great to bring peace and justice to the kingdom and allow the magic to flow freely once again.
Kit and Bryce prepare for their child's birth and for the inevitable war with Langstyn. Story includes one of the coolest fantasy battles I've read, snark battles between Wynna and Regyn, and various moments we've all been waiting for. A great end to The Green Princess!
