A brand new Mountain Man adventure from D.M. Haggard!
This is an exciting work of fiction and fact. It is based on many real events from the lives of historic pioneers, explorers, and mountain men. Buck Jackson invites a historical figure to join him at his trapping cabin located in the Rocky Mountains. Both are recruited by one of the more famous explorers of the West, John C. Frémont. All of these men experience life thrills that few can possibly imagine.

D. M. Haggard, aka D. M. Horridge, was born in Texas, raised on cactus, dust, and a strong family. When I was very young, I would visit my uncle's farm in San Antonio and work side by side with my seven cousins baling hay, swimming in a round cow trough, and hunting rattlesnakes. I've hunted and fished all over the United States, and have worked like a trojan on my own ranch in Texas. I've written short stories and professional articles for a variety of marketing and professional magazines, but only recently started writing western adventure stories. I like learning about the real characters of western history and use them in a fictional way. I feel like I am preserving their memory and the heritage they left for us over time. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife of 55 years, two terrific children, and a million friends. I try to leave a message in every book that says to the reader, "we are all part of this world of ours and we need to work together to keep it from falling apart." My family is the most important part of my life. I have also been blessed with four fabulous grandchildren and two spouses of our children who have brought a wonderful depth to our family and extended family. One of my favorite subjects is the Texas Rangers, a group of tough, honorable, and law-abiding men and women. Only recently I have begun a series of children's books named "The Amazing Adventures of Two Boys." They represent many of the stories my father told to my brother and me as children. Always exciting, but not frightening, they give me great pleasure to write and publish on Amazon under my father's name, Don Horridge, and my name D. M. Horridge. All of the proceeds from these children's books are donated to children's ministries throughout the world. Thanks for listening.
I liked the personal touch. Mountain men are often depicted as loners. Buck and Kit were able share their love for the outdoor adventure as well as friendship and enjoyed the time together.
So many historical dates in this book it's ridiculous. 1st pouring powder down N the barrel of a sharps rifle no mentioning a bullet where do you carry the ramrod on a 39 to 40 + inch barrel 2nd BUck reading a book about bar masterson then telling Kit about it Bat was 13years old when kit Carson died.wonder what the story was about kit in grade school? 3rd Kit singing to a grizzly bear to the tune of She'll be coming around the mountain that was written in 1899. Kit Carson died in 1868. 4th drop traps? Does the author mean deadfalls ? Also beavers are trapped so as they drown with the weight of the trap any caught on dry ground would spin twist and fight till they wring their foot off young ones are not released this author should spend some time doing some research or better yet spend some time learning thru doing as I have. I can't finish this it is a waste of time and my eyesight L
A story of fiction and facts about the Mountain Men and their adventures in the old West. Buck Jackson has numerous historical people to visit him in his trapping cabin in the Rocky Mountains. Included is John C. Fremont, Kit Carson with other explorers to survey the Western mountains to build a railroad. John C. Fremont was hired by the Government and found other mountain men to join in. These men visited a bar and met Bat Masterson the bartender.
It is in the high country in the cold winter months with ice and snow. They fought bears, wolves and were visited by indians. They trapped beaver, mink for furs and killed elk, deer and other animals for their meat. The storyline was full of adventures and excitement. This is book #1 in the series. I recommend this book for all ages.
Good read, loved the story, loved the characters. The bad news is the book abruptly ends! Very unexpected. Leaves you wanting more. The good news is I think the next book in the series is available and takes off from this one. Time to go get it.
I have read a large number of mountain man books, but I have never read a more interesting and enjoyable book than this. D.M. Haggard has brought the pages of this book to life in a way that I have very seldom seen before. His ability to present fact and fiction of history along side one another is a pleasure to read.
Superb story of the lives and times of the fabled Mountain Men.
One of the best books I have read on the trials tribulations of the lives and experiences of the Mountain Men. It was well written and factual. Great Book!
This was an excellent novel depicting Buck Jackson's expedition west exploring a way west in the1800s. If you like mountain man adventures I would highly recommend this book!
This was the first book I read from this author. Ok know am eagerly awaiting the next one in his series. I have read many mountain men books by many authors and this one was entertaining as any. It rates right there with my favorite Grizzly Killer series.
Two main characters lead the way. Others bumble, stumble in the wake of the heroes. Structure seems to follow a haphazard path. Writing always good and clear.
