A Farm LitRPG Story

Level up your animals, breed your monster-girls, save the farm!

When Jerry follows the trail of his missing uncle, he discovers a mysterious monster-girl and an equally mysterious region called Delom where everything works like a video game. But there isn't time to gawk, because Jerry's inherited his uncle's farm, once the most famous animal breeder in Delom, and everything is falling apart. The animals are low level, there's not enough food to keep their health up, and a greedy developer wants to put Jerry and the farm out of business.

But if Jerry can discover his uncle's greatest secret, he might just be able to level up enough to save the farm. All he has to do is figure out how to breed monster-girls!

I didn't get past page 64

I can't honestly give this work a fair review, I simply couldn't get past page 64, which isn't fair to the author. It's not that I don't like the genre but more of an inability on my part to suspend my disbelief, and engage my demented imagination. There are overtones of "Alice in Wonderland" for two guys that ate the wrong kind of mushrooms. If you like the litrpg harem type of novels (I do) give it a try, or sample it to make up your own mind.

If I hadn't already decided to read the next book I would give this two stars.

I'm intrigued by the story and, in general, it's not poorly written. However, there are specifics that drove me NUTS.

Pros:
- Farming game mechanics.
- Monster Girls.
- A few unexpected twists.

Cons:
- So much yelling! Seriously, it felt like every third line had an exclamation point.
- Slow start.
- Inconsistent math/story.
- Grammar/Sentence Structure/Tense (past, present, etc)

A particular twitch inducing passage involved characters whispering, with exclamations, and a few paragraphs later the MC shouts but doesn't have an exclamation point. I understand you can have an excited whisper, a harsh whisper, an urgent whisper, and more, but most "yelling whispers" were not those; they were sentences, like many others, that simply ended in exclamations! Then, after reading 2/3 of a book with an excessive amount of exclamations, I see "'Hell yeah,' I shouted to myself." No exclamation. Eye twitch.

Something else that broke my immersion was later, when the story was in full swing, math wasn't adding up. Either the size of large rewards where a few lines later the rewards are suddenly inadequate (or the reward wasn't as big as stated), purchases being debated then a few lines later spending as if the debate wasn't needed, or, the worst offender, timers. Saying something takes 10 days, but you get 4 days off, so now there's 8 remaining. Having 4 days remaining, but not needing to do anything for 6 days. Once I can deal with; more than half is a problem.

Then there were plenty of sentence structure, writing tense, and grammar problems.

Again, if I hadn't decided to continue on already I would have scored lower, but I *am* intrigued by the story, so I can't give it less than three stars if I'm that interested in continuing, right?

Oof, I was expecting this to be a more “adult” experience but I didn’t think the random sex sequences would be just as random as a rabbit running across the road.

The story itself is alright, your typical “save the ____” story but the book's failings are more in line with the random interactions with the titular monster girls. Violet starts as a source of knowledge and just turns into another background girl for the MC to acknowledge, the girls are all one-note and the plot just shines a light on that.

I will say the first half of the book was strong, compared to the rest of it, but it falls short when Jerry and Violet have sex for the first time. Did they have any feelings growing? If so, it didn’t show more than just because she was beautiful. The other girls were even less so other than for the Harem aspect.

It’s a good time waisting book and, oddly, I’d read a sequel, but I’d like to see a stronger bond with our characters than just the small interactions they were given. That and some grammar checks, the sex scenes and some plot heavy moments had poor grammar moments that broke the flow a lot.

Oh and Bryce’s reveal as the saboteur was a surprise but not in the right way. He gave no indication of being the one causing the damages and that he was in debt at all...seems a bit odd of a choice. Honestly, a random person who we never met with no name would have been easier to stomach. Sure, keep Bryce as a pawn of Cade but have him be revealed as his pawn with the use of his hotel perhaps? I don’t know, maybe I’m just picky or not made for the style of book overall.

This is going to take a while and you should probably get some popcorn before going on.

Now I know what some of you might think if you look at my read list "why did you read this, are you depraved?" Though the answer is yes, that's not the real reason. The real reason was because of a Facebook ad for audiable that led off with this book - and I took offense to that.

After skimming and reading the preview that Amazon had out loud to my coworkers, and making many a joke (reading it like the puppet pals, saying "you're a breeder, jerry" like Hagrid, disturbing the peace of the industrial park at 2am by screaming "Violet, we must breed!"). I managed to procure the .epub AND the audiable book (and I'll even review that here because work made me that depraved to even humor the idea of reading or listening to this). I wanted to be as neutral as possible, but im just going to go with blunt honesty.

Its hard to pick where to begin so I guess the best place to start is the basis of any story worth anything: plot. This story barely has that. Sure, it has a beginning, a pseudo middle, and a rushed end, but thats about all it has. There are plot holes throughout it that continually break immersion: mainly continuity problems where math and logic are concerned. The one that really got me was the breed chamber timers that are changed to fit the story mid hatch (egg takes 10 days to hatch, Jerry gets upgrade that reduces the time by two days, timer is declared to be six days because the plotline needs it to be exactly that not even one page later and no time elapsed between the events). Its a sloppy edit mistake (I make the assumption it made it to an edit phase).

Second issue with the plot: no problem, no climax (and no, the sex scenes do not count as a climax, 'Mr. Archer'). I can give a little found on the "no problem" argument because many would say that the farm being in danger of bankruptcy is a problem, which isn't wrong per se, but it is in this case. The farm is bleeding out, yes. However, its not bleeding out to a point where a banker or other person is coming to try and get/take the property. This is only implied with two paragraphs about Cade, who never shows up. The sabotage that happens is nothing - it accomplished nothing other than be a minor inconvenience. The Llamas were poisoned, no deaths and the equipment was fine (poison the well, that will do more damage....). The breeding chamber lid is slightly opened, the eggs are fine and they get to hatch soon and are completely healthy (break the equipment, you'll do better). Slash tires in the light of day and get caught, abuse the quest mechanics and get more money than God and never have to worry again. The saboteur was worthless...I'd have made his head roll for being so incompetent were I the big bad of the story.
Climax is non-existant. The story just builds and builds and then it's over and "resolved". You don't see what it is that caused everything to end happily-ever-after - it just is. That might have something to do with the fact that Simon Archer released a book every week and has since February 2020 and the effect on quality is apparent in the lack of climatic events that aren't sexual. "But they caught the saboteur". Saboteur didn't do a thing and the farm still had to rely on the fair to save it. You don't see the fair, so you don't get to enjoy the farm getting saved. Its just another deus ex machina out of so many in the book - and that detracts from the whole thing and leaves little room for development - like with the characters.

All the characters are bland and flat. They are all described with one word, two at best. Violet is shy, Glendella is sarcastic, Ralph is a mute, Jerry is a soyboi, etc., etc. The interactions are so inorganic that I wished I was watching a hallmark movie, and I hate hallmark with a passion that makes Gallagher's love of smashing watermelons look fizzled out. The characters have no growth or development and Jerry is insufferable with this as he doesn't seem to have any flaws to work on. Jerry says something and everyone swoons, Jerry has no possible way of knowing something but he knows it and is the chosen hero (this story has a strong touch of chosen one syndrome in it). Most of the dialog and character actions come off as something from children shows like Magic School Bus. This would make sense if the characters were kids, but they aren't - they're college aged or better (except the monster girls, they all fall under the category of "probably underage" - which make those sex scenes highly questionable).

The world of delom is underdeveloped and bland as well. Anything and everything is available whenever and the world is merely the means of being able to hold everything together with the equivalent of baling twine. The idea is that its an RPG world. The way it comes off is that the world is a loose RPG with more handholding than the last three generations of pokemon games. Need money? Literally read a book and you can purchase a car. Have a five person orgy? Here's a large quantity of money to post bail, you perverted pedo (they never established the monster girls age and I'm running with it). This alone was used as the answer to problems several times, and it got old quick. The world is only special because you can't have fantasy in modern day France I suppose.

Could the story be better? Definitely. Could it be worse? Sure. The story is still readable, despite the issues mentioned above. The ideas that Archer bring are unique, its just the execution that makes them fall so short. Don't mention the shady bad guy if he isn't even close to getting the farm. Don't use sabotage if it isn't actually going to make a problem that Jerry can't just side step without any effort. Don't make your main character end the story the same way he started it. Don't put all your detail into a sex scene that makes TeamSkeet look like the Hollywood of sex.

I could go on, but I really should touch on the audiobook. Somehow this got one.... Melissa Moran was the narrator and she tries to salvage what she can. She does a good job with what she has to work with, but the voices fall short with Jerry and Harrison in one place, and it makes it hard to tell who is talking. Regardless, Melissa has some talent changing her voice with several of the girls and it makes it somewhat easier to deal with the story. Its just, she got the "I dont like sand" line and its not her fault...she did what she could.

That said, I need to sleep and try to forget this story.

Farm or just slow start

I normally read books in 3-4 days, but after 3 days of Trying to get into the story I've stopped it to go on to something more. I like when a story captures my interest right away, not so here. I keep waiting for the Pop, just never happened for me.

I like different series by Simon Archer and will go to another one now.

Introduction:
Greetings, fellow beings of HowlStrom. I am Kiba Snowpaw, an alpha male Ice Wolf from our frozen world. As the winter season engulfs our land once every hundred years, I find solace in the tales from other realms. Today, I shall share my thoughts on an audiobook that caught my attention, "Monster Girl Farm" by Simon Archer.

Basic Plot Summary:
Jerry, a young man, embarks on a quest to find his missing uncle. His journey leads him to Delom, a mysterious region where life operates like a video game. Inheriting his uncle's once-renowned farm, Jerry faces challenges as the farm's animals are weak, food is scarce, and a greedy developer threatens its existence. The farm's salvation lies in a secret: breeding monster-girls. But can Jerry unravel this mystery in time?

Analysis/Evaluation:
The concept of a world functioning like a video game is intriguing. Delom's mechanics and the idea of "leveling up" animals add a unique twist to the traditional farm story. However, the narrative sometimes struggles with pacing and consistency, especially concerning the game mechanics.

Characters:
Jerry, our protagonist, is determined and curious. His interactions with Violet, the first monster-girl he encounters, are both enlightening and confusing. While the story introduces several characters, their development feels somewhat rushed, leaving readers craving deeper connections.

Structure:
The story follows a linear progression, with Jerry's challenges escalating as he delves deeper into the mysteries of Delom and monster-girl breeding. The LitRPG elements are woven into the narrative, though at times they feel forced.

Impact:
The tale raises moral questions, especially concerning the treatment of sentient beings. The monster-girls, while intriguing, tread a fine line between being unique creatures and mere objects of desire.

Hook and Thesis:
The initial hook - a world where everything functions like a video game - is compelling. However, the story's focus on monster-girl breeding might not resonate with all readers.

Praise and Critique:
I commend Archer for crafting a unique world with intriguing mechanics. The narration by Melissa Moran adds depth to the story. However, the narrative could benefit from tighter pacing and more fleshed-out character development.

Comparison:
While the LitRPG genre has seen a surge in popularity, "Monster Girl Farm" stands out with its unique blend of farming and game mechanics. However, it might draw comparisons to other harem-themed stories, which could be a double-edged sword.

Conclusion:
"Monster Girl Farm" offers an interesting take on the LitRPG genre. While it has its strengths, there are areas where it could improve. As an Ice Wolf who has witnessed many tales from HowlStrom's long winters, I believe this story has potential. Whether it resonates with you or not, it's a tale worth exploring.

May the icy winds of HowlStrom guide you on your journeys.

Reads like the author's self insertion fantasy, two pretty decent NSFW scenes but I think it would have benefitted from a more thorough explanation of the in world rules and less focus on the wacky Alice in Wonderland-esque travel to the fantasy world. I often found myself not understanding how the mechanics of the world work as well as the economy of the fantasy world. I think the main character only mentions his amount of money on hand twice yet the primary conflict is a financial crisis and we never get a solid answer to how much is needed to fix it. Would I recommend it? To people who have a thing for monster girls, I suppose. But new ones don't start showing up until the last third of the book so that's a bummer.

Well written I guess I should have realized it was haremlit

I had feeing going into it that it was going to be haremlit just had that tone. It wasn’t to hard core limited to two scenes. My only real complaint is that the MC and his friend start acting like children and then end up acting like children in a video game but with a harem. Was still overall a fun read.

Quite impressed!

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this. I can definitely say that I'm pleasantly surprised. The pacing is a bit slower than what I am used to but it wasn't dull or boring. Overall it was a great read and something could definitely sit down and relax while reading. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Slow but worth it

The writer kind of meanders through unnecessary details and dashes through things that might be interesting to learn more about and there's times of too much world building or things are unnecessarily unique and therefore in need of boring detail explaining but overall the story was very good and I like the world of Delom.

Wow. Just wow.

So this is a very short book that doesn't even start till you are fourth percent into it. The main character is bland. The system is nonsensical and is a very poorly thought out plot device. The harem aspect is just ridiculous. This is a late night idea someone had after a few too many. It was thrown together the next day without a care as to quality or story.

Fun, very, if you're ok with the whole Alice in Wonderland "knockoff", like LitRPG and Monster Girl, you're up for a good, time, this book actually left me a good impression about LitRPGs, it took some other book to change that but I enjoyed this one. Not the best of all, but a good package overall!

I started the book thinking it was an interesting concept, and i finished it wanting more. I found it to be a quick and easy read. The story itself felt done before but i enjoyed how the author made it his own.

Good read

An interesting take on game lit. Life adventures and mysteries, not so much fighting and adventuring. Almost mad scientist like when Jerry was working on the breeding process. I did enjoy the story. Have to see what happens next.

First and foremost, I want to state that I am not an author. I have no idea what it takes to write a book. I am a consumer with an OPINION, and only an opinion, based on my life experiences.

Overall I liked this book the best in the series especially the world building. The adult content felt off.. Like it was an afterthought and thrown in just to have it.

The MC was likable and their was a overall plot that spans the individual story and one that spanned the series.

It is Litrpg adult harem fantasy I would prob be willing to re read it if the other books were about the same mc and his farm.
I give it a 3/5
